Adkins back under pressure after Leeds humbling
Saints were unable to find sanctuary from their Premier League woes in the Capital One Cup with manager Nigel Adkins coming under more pressure after a disappointing 3-0 loss at Leeds.
Adkins made 11 changes but still fielded a senior team.
However, Saints were outclassed by Championship side Leeds with the manner of the defeat as much as the result shining the spotlight firmly on Adkins and his future once again.
Saints have found life tough since leaving the likes of Leeds behind in the Championship in the summer, accruing just four points from a possible 27, and even the bounty of a quarter-final berth could not chivvy them up tonight as goals from Michael Tonge and El-Hadji Diouf, as well as Luciano Becchio's penalty, saw the home side through.
The tinkering was reflected in Southampton's performance, with the Saints outplayed by their hosts.
It took until the 70th minute for them to register a shot at goal and it will be Leeds, third-round conquerors of Everton, who enter the hat tomorrow night for a first quarter-final appearance since 1996 - a year they made the final.
Such an outcome had seemed likely from the moment the teams were named.
With such an array of changes made, Southampton were unlikely to start the better of the two and so it proved, with Leeds and in particular rookie full-back Sam Byram making the early running.
It took until the 15th minute for the home side to fashion a chance of note, though, and when they did, it resulted in what will surely be considered as one of the worst misses in recent memory.
Aidy White stood up a perfect back-post cross to Diouf and, when he sidefooted across the goalmouth with keeper Kelvin Davis stranded, all Luke Varney had to do was score from a yard, but the former Portsmouth man inexplicably hit wide with Diouf unable to ram home the loose ball.
It was a miss which would often strangle the confidence of a player but seven minutes later Varney was running at the Southampton defence, cutting in and fizzing a drive across goal that crept narrowly wide.
He went even closer as the half-hour mark approached too, beating Davis to Danny Butterfield's poor backpass and, after bravely getting to the ball first, saw his edge-of-the-box effort hit the underside of the bar and fall just away from the onrushing Diouf.
Whether it was owing to unfamiliarity or not, Southampton were well off the pace and their goal continued to lead a charmed life when Rodolph Austin put a free header wide but, in the 35th minute, Leeds got what they deserved when Tonge opened the scoring.
Again Varney was involved, this time with a strong run down the left. His cross was hacked away by Jos Hooiveld but Tonge was lurking and from 16 yards slammed a drive through a crowded box for his third goal of the season.
He would have had a second before the break had Davis not tipped his vicious free-kick over but, despite being fortunate to be just a goal behind at the changeover, Saints came out in a similarly lethargic manner.
As has been the case in the league their defending left a lot to be desired, and had Diouf and then Tonge found their range better after Varney was twice brought down on the edge of the box, they could have been cut adrift.
That applied again in the 64th minute when Varney and Tonge played a one-two, with the former denied by Davis who spread himself well, before in the 70th minute, debutant Emmanuel Mayuka registered Southampton's first effort with a wayward shot.
It got little better than that for Adkins' men, though, and with three minutes left, Diouf wrapped things up.
The goal owed everything to Austin, whose 50-yard run may have included some good fortune, but when his low shot was parried by Davis, Diouf had the easiest of finishes from two yards.
After that there was still time for Leeds to get another in injury time, with Becchio, on as a sub, scoring with his first touch from the spot after Dan Seaborne pulled Tonge down in the box.

I think last year's team and formation would have done better than we are now. The sign of a true great manager is to be able to assess when you've made a mistake and address it but unfortunately as much as Adkins had led us to two promotions, even some of his tactics were questioned last year do does it lead to the conclusion that any decent manager would have got us promoted the last two seasons with the purchases that were made.
Formation is wrong.
Guly out of his depth and brought on at the worst times.
Massive hole in the middle of the park.
Possession football but only as the back.
Midfield sat deep
Loads of strikers but only one really upfront with others out of position.
This season may well see a new low points record in the premier with the most goals conceded.
It is time for a change I'm afraid or at best Adkins needs a tactician or a mentor behind him.

Yes saints stay quiet about transfers but that's because the manager has never had a say in it.
What else can it be other than 'they' are Cortese identifying and bringing the players in, either upcoming names to make cash later if English or foreign players from far reaches to secure sponsorship from abroad.

Yes, from what I have read, this was a bog awful performance and my sympathies go to the fans, even Glenn, Yorkie and co whose journeys weren't too strenuous.
I took the little Strassies to Palace last year and that was bad enough.
However, here's some perspective.
1. Sunderland got dumped out tonight ..... at home ..... to a local rival.
2. Wigan lost at home to Bradford.
3. Villa needed a last-minute winner to overcome Swindon.
4. Arsenal went 4-0 down in the first half .........
5. ........ Reading lost that four-goal lead and conceded SEVEN ..... AT HOME!!!!!
6. NA chose to rest players who had been in the mix at the w/e, but give others their chance. If he had played the same 11 who finished the Spurs match, the same moaners would be saying he should have rested those players.
Despite it all, this evening has been a useful run out for a number of players, mostly Mayuka and Tad Lee, who, if they play next w/e, will flourish on the back of getting in some useful match time.
Personally, I'd have liked a win tonight and a crack at Wembley. I'd have liked a few of those picked to have had a storming game, but I'm happy to keep things in perspective. The next three matches are far more important.

He can't pick the same starting 11 for every match; modern footballers' bodies wouldn't be able to cope and by mid-February, he'd be fielding Kelv and ten under-19s.
I hope not too many fans spent their hard earned cash on travelling to this game. NA just showed the greatest contempt to the travelling fans with this team selection and performance. Time to go NA please.
What's disappointing is that many of those picked this evening (as last year at Palace) didn't step up to the mark. I think there might be several players who have just had their last chance, but give Nigel credit for giving them that chance. How many on here have been crying out for Steeeeeeve to be given a run or for Seeborne to replace Fox or Fonte? Mind you, many of those also called for Kelv to get dropped and have since called for Kelv to start.

NC is running the club as a business. He has opinion on how we should play. It's not his money that saved the club so te Salisbury comment is unrelastic as we had a champioship team in div 1 and spent the 11th most in the league that summer, but it is his call to make money. keeper released but jot replaced until too late. NA said we beeded defenders but we only tried to sign foreigners or young talent abd why is it Guly always plays a part??? What I do know for fact is that the likes of Eddie Howe turned NC down because he is too interfering.

I know the PL needs to take priority but why enter the league cup if we are not interested in having a good go at it?
What is the point of going all the way up to Leeds to get another beating. Losing yet again will just knock moral further.
I haven't seen the game but it looks like a really poor performance. I feel for those who have paid good money, gone all the way to Leeds to witness this load of rubbish.

Interesting to see Reading struggle though - they came up with the best defence. Their manager was being really hard on himself and the team after losing to the Gooners - but the Gooners can do that to anyone.

Lets face our team is really struggling at the moment.

I,m not for one moment claiming to know how to run or manage a club more than the manager or chairman....but I did say that a couple of quality signings was all we needed pre season, and review the tate of affairs in January; then we would have a better idea of what was needed and where to strengthen.
Unfortunatley as we can see from the premiership table the two clubs that bought the most players are propping up the rest. We are not playing the attractive style we played last season because the team has been largely broken up. I dont think changing the manager at this point is the right route to go here, as it will merely unsettle the side even more. The grass is always greener on the other side when things are going wrong, always easy to look for a scape goat.
What this club needs right now is a confidence boost, that can come when nobody expects it and can change a hole season..... with no more injuries and a return of our top signing this could come this month, and if it does, the climb up the league could be swift. COYS, be positive and well be fine!

As others have said on here and other posts, we're ahead of schedule re our 5 year plan. Perhaps last season was TOO good and we should have NOT got automatic promotion having spent the ENTIRE season in the top two. Perhaps some of you fans would be happier if last season was a mediocre middle-of-the-table season, and this season we were still in the Championship? Would that make you happy????
And as for sacking Adkins!! Who would you get in who would be BETTER???? And please God do not say Redknapp or Hoddle!!!!! Surely the managers who are out of work, are out of work because they're sh!t.
Except maybe Pep Guardiola, and of course, he's sure to come to SMS isn't he!!!!!!
Now get off Adkins' back and support your team! And while you're all at it, STOP BOOING AND CRITICISING GULY AND FOX!!!!!!

I hate losing - even moreso as a result of playing badly - but I fully understand why a manager picks fringe players for such matches and thus increases the risk of losing. It's a blancing act.

If the manager cannot inspire his team, his days must be numbered. Sadly, NA, who has done a great job for us in the last 2 years, must go. I'm not an 'arry fan but he may have the charisma and nous to turn things round. I'm not sure he and NC would see eye to eye, however. Is this competition important to Saints right now? Ask Everton, who lost to Leeds in the last round. In truth, its a distraction which will no doubt create a field day for the media and fans' comments. I'll wait until after the West Brom game and hope to see a vastly improved league performance.

I love the "we support Nigel Adkins" brigade. The very same people who stopped the club getting Glenda back in 2004, which led to Wigley and relegation through two divisions. They think this is big brother, they're supporting their favourite housemate! I love southampton but this yokel mentality can be a little tiring. I want the club to do well, I don't care if the manager is nice chap or a total git. Adkins, unfortunately, isn't a premier league manager, the question now is do we hang around until it's too late or do we make him walk the plank now?
Besides when did Lowe ever pay heed to the reaction of the fans? It was other members of the board of directors who blocked the move because they were unhappy with the way Hoddle walked out on the club.
If the board had agreed to appoint Hoddle - a move I was against - the fans would have held their tongues and let him get on with it - myself included.
If he'd been successful, they'd have got behind him and let bygones be bygones. That's football. If he'd done badly, he'd have received no patience from the fans, no benefit of the doubt. That too is football.
The experience of Redknapp after his return to Fratton Park is a case in point. It took a long time for the sceptical Pompey fans to accept him and sing his name. His betrayal was swiftly forgotten as the apparent Skate golden age arrived.
If you recall the Lowe era, he didn't really make a habit of abiding by the wishes of the fans. He very much did things his own way, such as the removal of Pearson and the appointment of Poortvliet. He NEVER appointed the fan's choice as manager.
Granted the appointment of Hoddle might have meant a different course of events up to relegation in May 2005. But given his track record with us and other clubs, any success would have led to a better offer from elsewhere which he would have almost certainly taken. His successor in all likelihood would have been one of his remaining assistants ... Steve Wigley perhaps ...
Appointing Hoddle would merely have been, at best, postponing the inevitable. Due to the failure to attract investment and the PLC structure, SFC would have been relegated at some point. If not 2005, then 2006 or 2007 or 2012.
Moreover there is also no guarantee Hoddle would have avoided the drop - a manager of far-better pedigree with smaller clubs, more experienced in fire-fighting and wheeling and dealing could not prevent relegation.
It made perfect sense for the board of directors not to re-appoint Hoddle. Most employers would not re-hire an employee who left in the circumstances he did. Why should SFC be any different? Why shouldn't the directors show some principles?
It was not the failure to appoint Hoddle in February 2004, but the instability from successive weak appointments that followed Strachan's departure as well as a bloated squad of 36 professional players that caused relegation. Add some significant injuries to key players into the mix and bingo. A club cannot hope to prosper with FIVE managers over a 12 month period as we did during 2004. Incidentally, we went through a similar turnover of managers from early 2008 until early 2009 ... and look what happened ...
These factors were the cause of relegation, not the failure to appoint Hoddle.
To my mind, the reactionary mentality of wanting to get rid of your manager every 9 games is actually a yokel mentality. Those fans calling for Adkins' head are more akin to the idiots outside the Big Brother studio on a Friday night booing and jeering the latest media-manufactured villain.
reddandy10 tell me one thing: what is your plan if Adkins' successor only manages 4 points or less out of 9 games? Get rid of him too?!?
It is this tabloid-reading, reactionary attitude that is more indicative of the Big Brother / X-Factor mentality. The impatience, a demand for success now at all costs. The lack of honour and principles, the soul selling, the defacto prostitution. I find this mentality VERY tiring and I'm proud of the Saints fans who are showing loyalty and patience.
There are four main reasons I support Adkins:
1. Loyalty - after all his prior success and service to the club Adkins deserves more than 9 games, three of those being against Man City and Arsenal away and Man United home.
2. Stablilty - I don't want to see a return to the Lowe era of a revolving managerial door. That guarantees relegation.
3. Lack of an adequate replacement - as far as I can see most managers with Premier League experience currently out of work are out of work for a reason. Maybe you'd like to see us appoint Steve Kean, Paul Hart, Billy Davies or Avram Grant ...?
4. The cold, hard statistics indicate the reasons for our failure to pick up more points - see the following anaysis:

The removal of Adkins will not instantly change a situation that is most likely only solved by the acquisition of personnel with the right mental toughness as well as experience of Premier League football.
Unless Adkins' successor has Jedi mind tricks at his disposal, I fail to see how he can reduce, at least in the short-term, the concentration lapses that are all too evident and costing us points.

As bad as his man management skills were, his tactical nous most probably would have seen us avert the whole we found ourselves in at Christmas. That being said he would probably of buggered off a year later, but I believe we would have dodged the iceberg. Fans had it in for Lowe simply because his background wasn't palatable to them. There was a great deal of inverted snobbery amongst fans, something you wouldn't have seen with fans of London clubs. Love Southampton, the fans are very loyal but sometimes we come off small time.

It would be group decision, you do not spend 29 Million without a clear vision that all parties have subscribed too. You cannot blame NC, NA etc.... It was a Club decsion, or their defensive targets were just too difficult to bring over the line. We have no idea how difficult it is to bring these deals in, we just speculate.... look at Liverpool, they have been doing it for ever and had a terrible time of it in the transfer window.

It's all down to the manager and chairman, same as the successes.
We got lucky last season and rode the crest of the wave from league 1.
Some on this forum saw the danger signs as early as the Bristol city home game. We should have invested in the January transfer window a little more, sharp and Lee (2 strickers) were not enough, one of which is currently on loan. Spend peanuts and get monkeys, fail to plan, plan to fail. As a club we are under achieving.
Only 1 man can come in and thats wgs. He can attract players, will get this current crop fit, be popular with most fans and is shorter than schwi so no threat!

We have a fan base of almost twice our neighbours if we were both very succesful...they would just fill 30.000 we would fill 45.000 - 50.000...
.....however to reach these levels we need success, success requires the better players to WANT to come here, it is the classic catch 22...
...the only way to achieve this is with a Leeds or Pompey approach and look what happened to them financially....
..We have to build a community Saints base far and wide and make supporting the South.. (Southampton) a priority, There are still teams here and abroad were it is unthinkable to support anyone but your hometown team regardless of whether they win....
...Atletico Bilbao last year were a breath of fresh air and the support outstanding..
...SFC should network 100 times harder with the entire school and youth kid base and create a sense of belonging...
...we have to build on local loyalty and then the crowds and money filter through, then some success then bigger crowds and so on....only way, everything else is short term.

It was a training game, and a chnace to look at how hungry the squad are. It looked to me like the went with 4-4-2 with Lee & Mayuka leading the line.
I thought it would be great to see these two run at a Leeds defence - but they constantly had their backs to goal, and not a single pass into space for them to run on to. No idea where the goals were going to come from! Guly was not at the races, Chaplow was a shadow of his usual self. Ward-Prowse tried hard but to no avail, and de Ridder reminds me of Fernandes the more I see of him!
The defence was avarage - but Butterfield and Seabourne passed to players under immense pressure before they got the ball. Our movement was languid, and Kelvin's distribution back to normal service resumed.
I would just like to mention the referee - he deserves a mention. Clueless! At one stage every tackle made by a Saints player was a foul - and every dive by a Leeds player was a free-kick.
Difficult to take any positives from the game - but Isgrove looked better more up for it than any of the others!
I didn't boo at the end (or clap for that matter) as was a bit shell shocked.
For all those on the otherside of Hampshire - it was like playing you, my throat was sore from shouting "You Skate B*st*rd" every few minutes with all those great Championship players on show!!!!
Fear for Adkins?
I think tonight's result says a lot. Too many changes, team spirit not there, and a few players shown to be sub-Championship standard. I would have thought squad players would have seen it as an opportunity to stake a claim to a start at WBA. At this rate be lucky to get a game as an over age player in U-21 fixture.
I had great hopes of Lee - but in another side when we play to his strengths he might shine. Last night he did little to inspire me that he will make a difference now he is fit!
Still through thick and thin as they say - won't stop me watching or listening...but after the last 2-seasons of moving forward - it feels like we are stepping back to the old days. We may be in The Premier League, paying Premier League money, and walking the walk...but we aint talking the talk.
I know it was a big step up for many, and the gloss has started to dull after some encouraging play in the early games.
It's a big IF - but if Gaston Ramirez can inspire us by going forward and seeing those defence splitting balls for the likes of Lee, Mayuka, JayRod (or Lambert and Lallana), we will only get better.

I expected a fight and die attitude from the players but after last night, it appears the life of the fringe must be pretty good, I bet the 1st team players left behind are quite happy they will be back on Monday night, which make me question the rationale of leaving them at home in the 1st place.
If you use these cup games as competitions for fringe players to gain a 1st team shirt then all well and good, but where is the competitions coming from,,,,,,after last night it seems our youth academy players are the only forcing any type of decision about selection 1st places, which is no good for our 1st team.
I think like most fans could pick our starting line up for Monday against WBA, with the exception of (unkown to us injuries) andif we fans can do it, so can Steve Clarke (and its only Wednesday)

The same mistakes being made in team selection every week.
Last night was pointless. We don't need another game to know that Guly is useless at this level.
Who is our first choice goalkeeper????
Who is our back four?
With 11 different players out, nothing can be learnt. Fringe players need to learn from first team - not other fringe players. Its just change for change's sake and shows no tactical nouse. We may not like Glenda, but he is good at tactics. Atkins has been great for the club - but this game was thrown away and nothing learnt from it. A disgrace actually.

It's very easy to be negative about the side - but we want to keep the ball and not give it away cheaply. Unfortunately in an attempt to keep the ball we just go sideways and backwards. No one looks up for a run, and no one seems to making those runs! I think Lee made several last night, but by the time the player looked up he was offside.
Neither Lee or Mayuka are target men - but that's the only pass our midfielders seem to know...except Gaston!

Those people who can't quite get their heads around not playing the same side as Sunday need to put their brains into gear for a second! The fact we don't play til Monday is irrelevant, it's the 48hrs recovery time that's the issue. You don't play your strongest side twice in 2 days if you don't have to and we didn't have to.
I'm more dissapointed with the likes of Chappers,Steve,Jos,M
ayuka and JWP who really should be dominating Championship players if they have asperations to compete at the top level.
Yes, ultimately the buck stop with NA but I don't see how he could of done anything differently last night. All this has confirmed is we can't afford to tinker with the starting 11 too much because the back up players everybody thinks should be playing are quite obviously not up to it!

I wasn't going to bother posting this evening but I've had a think about it in a balanced sort of way.

HR. Oh yes of course. Just need the right offer, and I'm waiting
NC. Well, we would obviously consider a man of your experience, but I don't know how much more money I can spend.
HR. Well you can always sell to rebuild.
NC. Who would you sell?
HR Adam stands out, I wouldn't want to sell him. But your lads aint playing as a team and need restructuring.
HR. If you are worried about cash Nicola. You could always take a bet on me going back to the club. That would help alleviate needing to get rid of Adam and you could make yourself a few bob as well.
NC. Nice one Harry. Our fans wouldn't need to know about it. They like the appearance of a clean club.
HR. Emh. Who else are you talking to?
NC. A wee Scotsman, and a Jewish guy
HR. Nice, Both nice guys, but can they still cut the mustard? Also Mr Curbishley would be interesting - but he always fades after January doesn't he?
NC. Thats my problem. How would the fans respond to your potential return?
HR. You need to orchestrate a campaign of need for change, and highlight the transfer window, and the men available in the media. Its easily done.
NC. Cheers Harry.
HR. The wage will would go up a bit, it would have to, but you would generate more revenue with a winning team.
NC. And our academy?
HR. Just the Pompey lad really.

If we don't get many points from those then i think it is fair to call for his head.
I think Shaw should start now he's fit, he can't really be much worse than Fox can he?
Also can somebody explain to me if Cortese is making Adkins play Guly or if Adkins just has a massive blindspot there because from your attackers you don't want great pass completion rate particularly you want assists and goals!
If we have a bad November i'd like to see Strachen or a big name manager not someone like Mcleish or Coyle because that would be pointless

HR. You need to orchestrate a campaign of need for change, and highlight the transfer window, and the men available in the media. Its easily done.
NC. Cheers Harry.
HR. The wage will would go up a bit, it would have to, but you would generate more revenue with a winning team.
NC. And our academy?

We would need an experienced Manager ready to hit the ground running, they are rare to say the least. I say, be patient, panic reaction would be the worst option at the moment.
The baggies will de-bag us and Adkins will be gone on Tuesday.
Moral and confidence gone, enjoyment not there and un-fit. Strachan would be the best option but not sure if he's the yes man that schwi will be looking for.
I did post around 10 months ago that I can't see him as manager in 2013 and that is still the case, I fear he has lost the dressing room.
Spuds could have been 5 clear in the 1st half Sunday, they rested players in 2nd half, we had nothing to lose and come back into it. No shots on goal last night and no shots in 1st half Saturday.
If Adkins remains in 2013 I will cease to post, make a lot of the sheep happy!
Wgs for me, will be popular with most fans.
Why wait until 2013 go away now and do us all a favour.
Wake up and smell the coffee, if Adkins remains in 2013 I'll be off of here with an apology.

terrific job but is clearly out of his depth
in the Prem.Team selection,style of
play, substitutions have all been found wanting.
It is obvious we have not got the players
capable of playing the attacking style that NA wants to play.We need a manager who can see our limitations and adopt a style that will give more support to the defenders. But it seems
NA is just not capable of seeing this.
Also I would make Steve Davis captain.
Adam is not yet ready to take on this
responsibility and Steve has the experience and is more of a leader than Adam.
If a change is not made soon relegation
is a certainty, and our best players
will leave. The Club need someone
with the qualities of Strachan or Hoddle
if it is to survive which sad to say is not
looking likely.
Why we did not concentrate on the
defense in the summer we shall never
know and why did we not buy one or two players with experience?

NA is a very talented manager who needs time to learn. If he leaves, he will be very successful somewhere else and we will regret his departure.
As for the team, there is no question that some of the players are not good enough to be a success in the PL. That is why our sole aim this season is to survive and then strengthen ready for next season.
The future lies in the young players, and look how well the U-21s and U-18s are doing! That is so exciting - in two years, we may have a tremendous first team squad composed of mostly home-grown players, as per the long-term plan of the club. Until then, we just need to survive in the PL, and for that we need stability and calm heads.
Everyone needs to focus on the big picture, both club and fans alike, and we must remain calm!

McCarthy - been relegated, experienced, will sort the defence out, but is dead boring to listen to and to watch his team. Nice and clean though. Oh lovely and clean.
Avram - been relegated, and is quite a nice ole boy, and would like to be near Derby road. Plays OK footy. Nice bloke - but has achieved a little. Nice and clean apart from the dodgy massage visits. Oh ehm?
Nige - never been relegated, but looks a dead cert this year. Anyone for 4-3-3

It is obvious we have not got the players
capable of playing the attacking style that NA wants to play.We need a manager who can see our limitations and adopt a style that will give more support to the defenders. But it seems
NA is just not capable of seeing this.
Also I would make Steve Davis captain.

The trouble with Nigel is he is too nice a guy and always takes the responsibility for his decisions. The Echo then uses it to repeat the same old story they have written so many times in the past 2-3 weeks....very poor journalism or sensationalism in my humble opinion.
I for one think NA did the right thing last night and his reasons for resting his top 11 were totally valid. Yes the team he picked all had the opportunity to prove themselves. Unfortunately it did not work which proved the current first eleven are the best choices on current form.
In Nigel"s favour he changed the team around against Wednesday in the previous round and at that time we won and it showed the depth the squad has.
Confidence is what the Manager and team needs not repetitive sensationalism from the Echo. writing the same story so many times.
Please Mr Editor reinstall the confidence in Mr Adkins ability to manage the Club and take us forward from here.
The Club had back to back promotions and are 2 years ahead in their game plan. Articles such as the Echo are writing are self destructive to the Club and are an insult to Nigel.
Please step up Mr Editor and come out in support of Nigel before it is too late. Articles like this will destroy the confidence Nigel and the players need for moving forward from here

We are currently averaging 0.44 points/game after 9 games. Let's assume that over the next 11 games until the window opens that we can raise this to an average of 1 point per game, putting us on 15 pts after 20 games. We will then need to step up to 1.5 points per game over the remaining 18 games to hit what should be a safe 42 pts. The questions are:-
Can we tighten up the current defence or outscore the opposition over the next 11? Unlikely on both therefore may be lucky to score 11 pts.
Is our confidence and morale so low at present that this will compromise our ability to score 11 points?
Can we use the training sessions to shore up the defence and/or become more tactically astute under the current regime over the next 11 games??
Can the current hierarchy spend wisely and quickly during the transfer window?? If we don't act straight away at the beginning of January then we potentially lose another 3 games of making much need defensive improvements, inlcuding against Villa and Manure.
Not sorting the defence out in August and creating a really solid spine through the centre of the pitch was equivalent to footballing suicide and has pretty much undone the good that was achieved in the two years previous. I'm not saying that N.A should go, BUT he needs to learn and to learn quick and he needs to be able to act straight away in January.

Fearful for Adkins now but Cortese has to take some blame as it is him that controlled the purchases in the summer.

It's clear these people are plastic fans coming back to "support" the club now we're back in the Premiership.
Get a grip and support the man who is the main reason we're back in this league. If you can't, kindly bugger off.

The core of the Red Army remains intact ie the core that carried us through the lean years and made up the bulk of the 78% which supported Nigel in the recent poll.
The plastics will carry on with their:

And put Adkins on the dole.

Yes it's a mickey mouse cup, but we are in desperate need of results and a bit of momentum. I know the Premier League is more important but getting beat 3-0 to a side we beat twice last season is going to make things worse.
And yes we have played twice in 48 hours but we played twice a week in the championship without resting 11 players. Our squad isn't good enough to make that many changes.
Are we going to take the FA cup seriously when that comes round???

Confidence must be shot, the team doesn't seem fit so we've rested them?! Changing the team completely was wrong. If the truth be known Adkins doesn't know his best team and he is paid to do so. Our failure to speculate last January has come home to roost, who is really to blame? No one knows.
I feel that many of our first team have still only played a handful of games together so we have missed a golden opportunity to give them more playing time.
Southampton first team are playing away all of us want to see the first team players and we want to see our club win and we play a reserve team. Appalling!!

Sometimes very entertaining for their fans over the years but who really remembers how they played, everyone knows what they achieved though... fcuk all !Not a trophy in sight!
Don't have alot to comment on tonight's performance but let's get a little perspective here, we're not barca or manure so we had trouble getting the players we wanted over the summer, the squad is evolving, are we playing formations and tactics to suit our players.. Probably not right now, what NC and NA are trying to do is set a style of play formation and tactics and mould the squad to play that way right down to the nippers in the academy , this won't produce results in the short term like playing to our current strengths might, it may even take another season or two before we start to see a really positive impact on the 1st team, but in the long run we will reap the benifits, we will be able to dominate possession, pass our way around teams.... Our future star's in the academy will all be comfortable on the ball playing technical football and are being moulded to suit the game the saints want to play have some faith and get on the bus for the long haul
We are NOT Arsenal and the most important thing is to stay in this league with WHOEVER can get us there. Someone posted earlier that 'Arry (and I'm not advocating his appointment here) leaves every club with huge debts, think you'll find he delivered quite a positive bank balance for Spurs with some of his signings, especially now Bale has been valued at £60m.
We may not have won much over the years, we may have struggled in the top flight for many a season, we may have been on the wrong end of a hiding now and then and had controversy and crisis, but we have NEVER conceded 3 goals per game and been every other teams' goal fest. Its beoming embarrasing and must be stopped!

one thing i did forget to bring up about redkrapp is that he was filmed by the bbc panorama programme in which it looked like he was trying to `tap up` a player, and the report into bungs brought up concerns about a racehorse that was thought to be given to him by an agent! though to be fair he did tell the inquiry that it was possible that he did own the horse but insisted that he had not made any money out of it because the horse was a failure and never won a race.
with so many accusations around him and so many deals where he has taken a percentage of payments for buying and selling players, do you really think that NC would even consider talking to him? by suggesting him and hoddle you are showing your complete lack of knowledge of football and of saints!

Nice to be of service. Lots of our fans are feeling quite positive at the moment though.
On firsts. Pompey are good at firsts actually.
First club from Hampshire to win anything, the cup, the league etc

First club to think they are better than everyone else and face the harsh reality that they've got no ground, no money and no future?
Certainly the only club allowed to get away with being in administration for so long without being closed down (I wonder how HMRC feel about that one)
I suppose you are right.
your jealousy is showing dear, please compose yourself.
It must be hard sitting in the kipper shed and knowing that theres only one Premier League team in Hampshire just up the road with a Premier League stadium, training facilities and backing. Now I'll give you the fact that we need some better defenders but, quite frankly, I would far rather be in this position than yours.
Even when Saints experienced the financial troubles and dropped a couple of leagues I wasn't panicking because I knew we had the infrastructure in place to come back up. We were a good sale to anyone who wanted to buy.
who wanted to buy Pompey? A bloke who wanted to protect his 17million investment, several dodgy characters who couldnt pass the test and an arab who had already proven that he didn't know the first thing about running a football club. And so you ended up with the fans having to put together a bid in order to try and save something.
Oh sorry... forgot - Tesco's want to turn it into a car park for their store as well don't they.
From where I'm sitting, you can have all the firsts you want. They don't count for much if the PST can't save your club do they.

I can see by your long pointed post, that you are getting quite passionate here. Good stuff.
As I say, we are getting quite positive, and a complete take over by the fans would also be a first for a major club as Swansea are part fan owned only.
You obviously don't keep up with the facts, which is why some chaps try to read the "other" side. People were put off investing in the club due to the crooks stranglehold.
Tesco aint gonna happen - nice try, but that is just old banter.
Good day to you.

Unfortuniately faith does win football matches, not even if you spend £20m in the last transfer window
Thankfully its not up to me or you, its up to NC and how long will he wait? or is his 5 year master plan to get us back in the same place were we started?
