Adkins set to continue as Saints boss

Nicola Cortese Nicola Cortese

Nigel Adkins will continue as Saints boss after surviving crunch talks with Nicola Cortese.

The under pressure manager was summoned to a showdown meeting with executive chairman Cortese last night following the club’s poor start to the season that has left Saints bottom of the Premier League.

Adkins was understood to have feared he was going to be sacked, but after hours of talks Cortese told him to continue as manager.

It is believed that Saints have not put a timescale on their backing of Adkins, but he will be in charge when Swansea visit St Mary’s on Saturday.

A dejected Adkins had taken training at noon yesterday, as the players warmed-down and reflected on their latest loss at West Brom.

There was a sombre mood at the training ground with an expectation that Adkins, who has led Saints to back-to-back promotions, was about to be axed.

As whispers of his possible demise spread bookmakers had not only slashed his odds of getting the sack but, oddly, installed him as second favourite to take over at Blackpool.

Later in the day Cortese and Adkins were locked in talks for several hours, discussing the start to the season and the way ahead.

Thankfully for Adkins the decision from the meeting went in his favour and he was given an assurance that he would be allowed to continue as manager - for now.

Though the backing was not a guarantee to be in charge for the rest of the season come what may, it does at least give Adkins a little longer to try and turn things around.

November was always going to be a crucial month for Saints.

It may have started with a defeat at West Brom but with a home game against Swansea and then a trip to QPR coming up, as well as St Mary’s matches against Newcastle and Norwich, there are chances for points to be gained.

Adkins has retained the support of much of the fan base, with supporters at West Brom chanting his name for a significant portion of the game, despite the result.

Even with yesterday’s backing from Cortese though Adkins will be well aware that the pressure has only been eased temporarily and he must now deliver some much needed wins.

Just wondering; given the tight-lippedness of Saints to the media in general, let alone the Daily Echo, how does the DE know anything about what went on?

Seems a pretty thin story full stop. NA could be a day from the jump or NC could have given him ten years of backing; I'd be amazed if the DE knew either way.

Let's get it right, the Echo truly know fcuk all. Like the rest of us they can only rely on other news media and hearsay.
I'd love to know how they knew how Nigel was feeling!

NC doesn't have to put a timescale on his backing, why would he?

Carry on with the plan, strengthen in January with additional quality and we'll be good.

One in the eye then for the Sleuths and Oracles on this site with their insider info....kn0bs.

my mate was at WBA last night , he summed it up perfectly : " we were great then we were rubbish, it was organised then is was disorganised, Nigel was great, some of the time, its juist Saints, roll on the weekend...." he also said that he stumbled into a pub after the game with some mates and they were suddenly surrounded by 50 black dudes and they were the only whites there and later left the pub after having a great time and having talked mostly about cricket...

Is that the dreaded chairman's vote of confidence that all managers fear? I certainly hope not. Without doubt, Nigel has a lot to learn about being a Premiership manager, but that was also true of a certain Alex Ferguson when he first took on Man Ure. I recall the great Lawrie having a tough baptism with the Saints in the old First Division.
We do need to sort out defensive strategies, maybe by adding a specialist coach to the backroom staff, and addressing the shortfall by certain players whose names are often quoted here.
It is going to be a long hard season and one place above the relegation zone will suit us fine at the end of the season. a few wins and we can climb the table. The trouble with being bottom is that we always have to play teams above us, so let's get behind the team and its manager and push onwards and upwards

But you’ve got to
You’ve got to move,
And I’ll be there
Be right there to help you

I know just how it feels
to spread your wings
only to never fly;
there’s no desire
to give it another try

But you’ve got to
You’ve got to fly,
And I’ll be there
Be right there to fly with you

I know just how it feels
to put one foot in front of the other
only to stumble before you fall;
there’s no strength left
to give it your all

But you’ve got to
You’ve got to walk,
And I’ll be there
Be right there to break your fall

I know just how it feels
to face the world alone
only to realize you were wrong;
there’s a friend there
to help you along

we will always be there to help you

It would be hard to sack a manager that is briefed to play to a certain style and pretty obviously doesn't have a casting vote in recruiting..
It would also be very hard to find a top old school manager that would work under the new style of European Direction. Les Reed is the board member responsible for football.
Les Read quotes "I am responsible for what we call the Football Development and Support Centre. It is a concept rather than a facility. FDSC incorporates Coaching, Sports Medicine and Science, scouting and recruitment, kit and equipment and the Academy." "Managers are becoming Head Coaches and managers will have less authority over wider matters at clubs.""A manager should be appointed because he buys into the strategy.

I really feel for the coaches managers and players at the moment. also the fans.. we all have no idea how much power Nigel has nor how much responsibility is Les Reed's. As the chairman has said many times The buck stops with him nothing happens at SFC without his say.

The lads showed great grit and panache in the first few games but now seem to have their heads down.

As for Appy going to Blackpool kids.... I don't care. and do you want to know why? (No! I hear you scream.... tough I'm going to tell you anyway)
Simple. Plain. Truth. Appleton isn't a Premier League manager and he's not managing a Premier League team. What happens in the lower leagues really doesn't bother me that much. What I don't quite understand is how Fox launching everything 40 yards fits in with the certain style of play they talk about.

He seems to be so central to the game plan delivery wise that Nigel feels the need to leave him in.

Got to be Shaw now at left back in a 4-4-2 with someone reliable and hard working in front of him (Adam is battling enough this season to do that job nicely).

Then Cork, when fit, could actually save our season.

For me we also need to choose a No.1 and stick with him. Personally, I think Davis would be the most assured choice, especially as the players have so much experience of him at the back.

I do find it quite odd that both Lambert and him seem to have been seen as less central to our first team in the Prem - for me they were two of the players I was less worried about making the step up.

Good news on Nigel, now let's see the players show their backing for him by playing out of their skin on Saturday - they'll need to. Swansea have quick wingers and guile, so we'll need to be at our very best.

just kidding says...

Glad something has happened. You have got to hand it to Nigel, he can certainly make positive light out of a gloomy situation. For a moment there I was thinking he actually might be happy to be out of it. Anyway moving on. We have to show some b@lls when the opposition get anywhere near our penalty area. Someone has to get on the guy with the ball, especially if he's about to take a shot. Physically we are light at the back where we seem to be getting shoved around a lot. We lose the ball at crucial moments in midfield, putting extra pressure on our defence, which did'nt happen last season so much because the opposing teams were slower and we kept the ball longer. Maybe premier teams are much fitter than they used to be, they are all over us like a cheap suit as soon as we get the ball. I hope Nigel takes care of it, even with the players we have. Also hats off to Adam Lallana, that guy never stops running for his team, just think what he could do if he did'nt have to run so much!

I truly believe that if Saints are to turn this under Nigel SMS must becoming a cauldron of support .. the support away is brilliant.. absolutely brilliant!!!

Good Luck Nigel and Team.

Nicola we love you lots but a few words would go a long way at the mo.

Swansea have quick wingers and guile, so we'll need to be at our very best.
everyone has said enough about their thought on selection, beyond the fun banter we have when we look forward to games. At this stage we must just leave it alone and let the manager manage.
No doubt Nigel has express a wish to add and it's surely up to the football director and chairman to add to the squad in the window and may well have a clean out of the squad. We all know a fair few have been measured and found wanting. It just isn't worth guessing about as none of us know the set up and nothing has been said by SFC.

i hope everyones taken the chance to read the match report from the poopey game on the fews site tonight!
to summarise;

Woeful Pompey crash to fourth loss on trot (headline)

the Blues failed to muster a single decent goalscoring chance all game as they tumbled to a shocking defeat in their worst display of the campaign by a distance. (oh dear oh dear!)

Understandably, boos rang out at the final whistle as home fans vented their frustrations. (come on we all know they would never boo their team! oh and they were leaving early aswell!)

now i know why we have had a skate free night! what i dont understand is, we have been told over and over again that booing your team is wrong and you never ever leave early! so it cant have been them. how many times have the fish tried to hit us with that? perhaps it was the away fans booing cause they only won by 1 goal! well fishys we know you will be reading tonights posts though you wont have the courage to post yourselves, so can i just say to the bestest best best bestest best fans in the world (tm), not as good as you thought you were are you!

oh and only 11,328 bothered to `fudge` pack the park! thats still way down on our L1 average btw and when we played brentford at home we had 19,641! whos the bigger club then!

Our squad is average and with the exemption of a few players will get relegated. If we are within reach of safety come January we will undoubtably stregthen our defence nd be fine but..... well not likely! We look great going forward but, for the first time I agree with Gary Neville, our full backs are leaving us exposed defensively. Clyne is brilliant going forward, Fox is dreadful, but both get caught out of position time and time again. This may be acceptable if you have Vidic and Vermalen in the middle but unfortunately we dont. Fox and Clyne both dart forward and unfortunately with the formation we have that would either require us leaving wings exposed or having to drop more creative players back. Personally I would drop Fox and give Shaw a chance, put Rodriguez on the bench and play Ward Prowse / Cork in the middle, just to have a bit more grit. Lambert is the classic centre forward and noboday has resembled Shearer as much as he has, with Lallana and Ramierez behind him, it could work.

Trouble is two years of win win win and some of us thought we could do the same in the Premiership. Would not like you to stand at my shoulder in a battle my son. We can all see what is wrong but at the moment there is no magic wand to fix it. The present squad of players with 100% support from us fans, might be able to keep us afloat until we can bring in the players for survival . I know it's hard at the moment and not very enjoyable but we must all stick together and keep the faith. It's a tricky situation because a new manager would not really be able to do much with the squad we have even Pep would not be able to keep this team in the prem so the sacking is not the solution. The players we have signed have been mediocre Its lovely to have Gaston but we were crying out for defence and what did we get a Japanese defender from the dutch league when really we should have pumped for someone with experience of playing in a top division I'm not saying Maya is a bad player because that he isn't but still someone with expierence would have been good. I recall Jack Cork playing at right back at times so when he is back I would put him at rb and put Clyne at LB and play Fox as an attacker because going forward he is one good player and if we are lucky and we are still in it come January then you bring in the personnel (Michael Dawson) (Maynor Figuroa) etc and start the season from there as for the Gully saga he's going to play so it would be for the best if you get behind the lad. Believe boys believe!

I can't believe all the sack Nigel Adkins claptrap. These so called Saints fans remind me of the so called Arsenal fans who decided that they had seen enough at 4 nil down against Reading and decided to go home early. Well I hope they beat the traffic. Nigel Adkins took a so so Division one team through two straight promotions to a level when they are now playing against some of the best club teams in the world. At least 4 of the side every week are still the same players. They are the same players because Nigel Adkins has the vision to know that those he has kept have the potential - having been too good for League 1 and the Championship - to play successfully at the top level. If he is given the chance to prove it, we will return to a sustainable Premier League existence free from bankruptcy. It is possible we will fail, but if we do we will come back up because this time we have sustainable financial foundations and a manager and squad too good for the Championship. It would be horrible to be relegated, but far worse to kow tow to the knee jerk, "home at half time if we're losing", lily livered, fair weather so called fans who lack the stomach to see us finishing the job of creating a solid club. Hopefully Nicola Cortese is not stupid enough to read our comments, but if he does I hope that he remembers the long term vision of Marcus Liebherr rather than succumbing to the short termism of those fans with less fibre and backbone. The club was a mess for years last time we caved into the short term hiring and firing mentality and we only just survived. Nigel Adkins for as long as it takes...

Trying in all honesty to see where it has all gone wrong - and the only thing I can think of is this...
For the last 2-years we have built a squad of players, probably by word of mouth and "mates" jungle telegraph. We have unity, everyone gets on and plays for each other and Nigel - result promotion to Prem.
Players like Billy Sharp, Dean Hammond, and others get shipped out after thinking they had earned a crack at the Prem - and in come "Internationals" to add quality.
These guys take time to bond and settle in, then when things are going wrong - go off to play an international leaving the "old" guard with all the sorting out to do!
Not sure how it works but I honestly believe there is disharmony in the camp - and an element of resentment among the "old boys".
It's only a theory...but it could be the reason why. All the players brought in previously really felt they were joining a big club and being given a chance...the last lot of incumbants are already "big" in their own right - so may not thing it's such a big deal.
The new boys seem to work their socks off, I think Gaston looks worth every penny, JayRod has obvious "potential", Clyne, Yoshida, and Davis all add something - but are they "mates"?
Nigel it really is truly over to you - to sort things out. I wonder if the finger pointing has started and the unity/one for all/we stand together has left our squad?
Still it could be worse...it's going to get colder...I sense Minus 10 coming to a City near you lot soon!

On first reading I thought this was poor typing/spelling but if you read it again in an Eastern European accent it makes perfect sense. Hodgson did set them up well; Clarke has continued this. They played 2 holding midfielders which made them very compact when we had the ball and when we committed men fwd they were dangerous on the break (eager in scoring).

Lets face it everybody. We may well get relegated. But we have a manager who has proven that he can get us back again. It just might be the case that those in charge realise we are ahead of schedule on the 5 year plan. We still have a fantastc championship squad and we havn't sold anybody of note. Billy Sharp, Jayrod, Rickie and Tadanari Lee would terrorise that division. A little tinkering at the back and some new signings at the back and we would be ok next time around. That's obviously a worse case scenario. We've been a bit unlucky with deflections etc and can still turn it around . I say stick with Nige. Pehaps even NC understands that the lack of signings at the back are his fault. And a quick word for that idiot who signs off with PUP. Yeah you are right. We all wish that Pompey would pay up.

The accuracy of these reports is always vague. Meetings about performance would not have lasted hours. NC would have sat NA down, they would have discussed various issues according to a pre set agenda. I expect it would have included poor results, reasons, requirements for strengthening, who should stay, who should go and planning for January. If we are going to buy players we will be looking now, everyone knows that. But who? I suspect it will be from international sources and may not be players we know already. We shall see.. its all guesswork.

NC would have set out his expectations for NA who will now KNOW...not wonder.. but KNOW .. what he has to do to stay. That will not be reported anywhere.

I am glad that it appears that Adkins has an extended time to get things going. We shall see but I think that it is speculation to set a time limit on it though and any estimate by any paper is guesswork.

I believe Nigel's methods are sound and are good enough for the premiership. What I also believe is Adkins may have done everything he possibly can with this group of players. I still believe they are not doing their job regardless of NA tactics. Is this down to ability or are there other factors. I don't know.

What I am sure of though is that a couple of signings that looked good at Championship level are not Premiership level. I have doubts about Davis and Rodriguez who I thought would shine but seem a bit lost with the speed for the top level game. I hope we see Lee at some stage and Mayuka because they haven't truly had a chance to show their mettle yet.

It seems that Adkins has been given some time. Good.

We the fans must now get behind him, do our bit, keep the faith and remember .. we are Saints fans - that will never change.

Probably the correct decision to keep with NA at least until the January transfer window opens. What's really needed is a class centre and a tough tackling Denis Hollywood (for those who remember) style left back. Plus a gritty midfielder in the Jimmy Case mode who can win tackles, command respect from the rest of the squad and provide some onfield leadership. With these in place Saints should be a match for anyone.

More to the point that the realistic supporters see it different to your meltdown panic option. You are entitled to hold that opinion of course but forgive the majority if at the moment they don't see it your way, if results continue to go bad, I guess there will be no option, but until January, the best Manager in the World couldn't turn things around with what we have on offer. Lucky then that 'New Co Poopey', which is the eventual conclusion of this slow demise, won't have a history, so you can be safe in the knowledge we won't have to harp on about it, unless mid-table somewhere in the Southern League is anything to harp on about.

By the way, with your inevitable 10 point deduction you are now joint bottom of League 1. Congratulations.

At least 4 of the side every week are still the same players. They are the same players because Nigel Adkins has the vision to know that those he has kept have the potential - having been too good for League 1 and the Championship - to play successfully at the top level. Totally agree!
So, those of us who realise that Adkins did well by getting out of the 3rd division and second division because of massive financial backing but falls woefully short in his team selection, tactics and substitutions in the Premier League where he has no experience are lacking fibre, backbone etc etc but as long as we get relegated and bounce back then all is good? As soon as we got promoted I knew things would be too much for him. I really like the bloke but he has failed in 9/10 games to master any sort of victory and we only beat Villa because they were awful at the time and lost their most influential player. Wigan at home was the clincher for me. West Ham away was ridiculous.
The pro-Adkins brigade keep making out that those of us who are fed up with watching an inept defense and forward line short of confidence are no true Saints fans and should be taken out and shot. When you've shelled out thousands of pounds a season to watch the team you don't want to slowly watch a sinking ship. If we don't win at least 3 of our next 4 games against very beatable opposition something has to be done. Pretend you're a businessman, what would you do when it's obvious the man in charge of your multi-million pound company isn't quite up to it? Absolutely no room for sentiment here. If he gets us out the mire by xmas then great but we could well be 10 points adrift after the next few games and then what? I'd love him to prove me wrong as I don't normally like changes to disrupt things but look at our players' body language and the fact we've already conceded 28 goals with 3 quarters of the season left! Jesus Christ, stop viewing him with such rose tinted specs because he got us into the Premier League! Markus Lieberr's money got us here. Any manager would have done that with the resources, facilities and squad we had. He's clearly not cut out for this division as the table shows very clearly. "Oh, but he's a nice bloke and always positive." So is the old drunk guy who sleeps in the subway near my apartment.

I, like a lot of people, have been coming to these forums since the days of the Dark Lord.

To someone looking from outside, or a Poopey supporter, the debate on here could be misinterpreted as civil war, unrest or divisions in the support base.

But that's rubbish. I think the last few weeks on here have been quite remarkable really - with the vast majority of people sticking by and actively supporting NA and continuity at the club in difficult times.

The vast majority of those people realise that we've got serious problems this season, some like to point out those problems and suggest fixes, others like to focus on the positives.

But the main thing is that I'm confident that the vast majority will get behind the team on Saturday. That's something I wouldn't have been sure of in the past if we were in a similar position.

Equally, I think the support has been excellent so far, probably helped by the fact that fair weather fans haven't filled those few empty seats.

There is still a unity built up through many seasons of battling through bad times and we need to hold on to that. Sticking behind NA is part of that and I hope we stick by him not just for the full season, but for next campaign and beyond.

I suspect that unlike you. although the drunk guy knows his glass is half empty, he's one of the less miserable pessimists and doesn't take it literally. Really miserable pessimists like you of course think the bottom half of the glass is literally empty ie a vacuum. This means not only only that you have a glass with nothing in half of it, but the vacuum will cause the glass to explode violently -making a bad situation much worse.

So end of November could be the end of Adkins as Saints manager.
I can't for the life of me see it going to the transfer window?
We need a goalie that can organise a defence, come out of his goal, not punch the ball to the other side but actually catch it!
then a defence that's capable of holding it's own in the premiership.
maybe selling a £7million pound player to buy a £7million top rate defender or goalie might help?
Not many managers survive long after crunch talks do they?
Adkins for Blackpool? Appleton for Saints? or who could get us off the bottom who's available right now?

A good part of the issues now lie with the players and they must give 110% to WIN on Saturday.

It must mean everything to put on a SOUTHAMPTON SHIRT and there is no greater honour than to walk over the Itchen Flag with Colours and Flag and ready to support the Team.

A well placed insider tells me that although it was a long meeting yesterday the issue over Nigel's tenure was actually settled in the first five minutes.

The main discussion centred upon the current situation - and in particular the precise balance of strengths and weaknesses.

Nicola told Nigel that he often hears the weatherman on TV say that it will be "partly cloudy" or "partly sunny" - but when exactly does it change from being one thing to the other thing?

Nigel said he didn't know as quantifying some issues exactly was a bit of mystery to him. "It's like a bale of hay Boss" he said. "If you take one piece of straw off it, it's still a bale. Same with two and three and so on. But no-one has ever said at what point it stops becoming a bale just and becomes a bit of hay."

I'm told that the matter, quite understandably in my view, was not resolved and therefore a further meeting will take place on Friday.

What a completely stupid thing to say!! Getting promoted back to the premier league is by no means a simple task and we could find ourselves stuck in the championship for a long time. To be honest i think we would loose key players like Lallana, Lambert and Ramirez if we got relegated and would struggle to attract players of similar quality to replace them.

It is vital that we do not get relegated this season and must do all we can to ensure survival in the Premier league!! Any one who thinks otherwise are completely deluded and have conceded defeat already!

I am a long suffering Saints fan and am proud to be just that, but now I think we deserve to have something to cheer about and have the funds/infrastructure in place to finally compete at the top level!

In my opinion it is the players that need to step up, grow a pair and prove to us saints fans that they deserve to wear the shirt! They are the ones that let NA and all the amazing saints away support down on Monday night and now need to stand up and be counted and show that they want to play premier league football for Southampton F.C.

Gary Neville summed it up beautifully that night and said that "The individual errors that these saints players are committing are simply poor at any level of football"

What is NA supposed to do when these players are jumping out the way of the ball instead of putting their bodies on the line for the team.

NA needs to show the players the Monday Night Football footage of Gary Neville's assessment of the team and then see how they feel/react to it.

We need to stick with NA and start supporting the team together. That is our job as fans, but the players need to step up and be counted and start playing with pride. That is their job as players!

Now go get a home win on saturday against Swansea.

Good post.

Cannot blame Adkins for players not committing. Taking one in the face or covering 80 yards to defend a ball is part of their job. They need to look at themselves.

Keep Adkins. I see no replacement that would work miracles.

Our players need to man up. Stop feeling sorry for themselves and grind a result out.

Every ball, every tackle, every run counts. Concentrate for 95 mins and we'll be ok

Which of the following actions by the crowd are more likely to result in an imporvement in mood and possibly performance?

a. Clapping, cheering and singing
b. Silence
c. Booing

Your response above seems to suggest that clapping is a bad idea (unless I've misread what I take to be a deep vein of sarcasm).

I really can't see why a supporter would not want the crowd behind the team, regardless of how he feels.

Southampton FC...The Five - Year Plan for Dummies:

Year One Season 2009-10
Marcus Liebherr (bless him RIP) buys on Cortese's advice. Plan is to consolidate in League 1, maybe even reach play-offs. Started on -10pts. and finish 7th.

Year Two Season 2010-11
Plan is promotion to Championship. Start badly, Pardew sacked, Adkins in.
Finish 2nd to Brighton (who have since failed to keep up) so into Championship.

Year Three Season 2011-12
Plan is to consolidate, maybe make play-offs. Plan goes wrong because brilliant start puts us first for most of the season. Saints finish 2nd and promoted to Premiership a year (season) early.

Year Four Season 2012-13
This is this season. The plan had been to be promoted this season, but in actuality we are a year early, and trying to consolidate this year in the Premiership.

Year Five Season 2013-14
The plan had been to consolidate our projected Premiership status. We may still be doing that next season, or even pushing on. Or maybe we will be back in the Championship, wanting to spring back at the first attempt.

So we are a year, or one season, ahead of schedule. No more, no less.

I
I agree with most of what you say about the support and it is very reassuring considering the turmoil we have seen in the past.
Where I disagree is that, personally I am a Saints supporter first and an Adkins supporter second. I think all or most of us WANT him to do well and would like to see him here for the duration. He has so many good points about him, but reality for me is the club and its future success. I'm glad that he has been given more time to get things right (we'd all chip in and help him if we could!) but inevitably if he is not up to the job, then he must go.

It confirms, what I have said all along, that Cortese is a creep of the highest order and has no idea of man or customer management.
A crunch meeting going on for hours?, resulting in poor old Nigel being given the yellow card! -- what a pathetic way to manage!
How can dangling the yellow card over Nigel's head, for the month of November, inspire and encourage either Nigel, the team, or the supporters all knowing that one or two slips and Nigel gets the red!!
A good, caring Chairman would have inspired Nigel, the team and the supporters by :- extending his Contract by at least 2 years : bringing in an experienced and respected PL coach to help Nigel undertake a root and branch review of the present coaching staff, the team, the training and tactics and turn the results around.
For God's sake all the top managers have top coaches supporting them , does anyone really think that the likes of Wenger, Ferguson, etc.do it all themselves.?
What would that have cost? -- if it didn't work out, weasel Cortese could still sack Nigel, it would just cost the weasel a bigger payoff, which I'm sure none of the supporters would begrudge Nigel.
The atmosphere at SFC must be like one of the old Hammer Horror Films with Prince of Darkness, Cortese running things with his henchman Reed in the shadows, dressed in a black cloak ready to swing a huge battle axe If Nigel does get the chop he may consider himself well out of it and good luck to him!!

So say something positive then...
How early would you like the subs brought on? Or should we start with a different team, this might save bringing the subs on? You exude pessimism, surely not a good quality in a football fan? Go and sit in the corner, think for a while, (end of November or longer?) then come back with something positive...like, maybe...this is a tough division isn't it, i've been so used to success that i'm now very upset and i want a new toy...Listen to yourself
You want to see optimism? I'll show you all my losing betting receipts from Ladbrokes after betting on Saints this season. If I was pessimistic I'd be wealthy.
Go look at the league table and have a little word with yourself. Then go look up pessimism in the dictionary. I'm not pessimistic, I'm fed up. Adkins' tactics, subs and decision making have been mostly wrong. Optimism says he'll learn. Pessimism says he'll carry on playing Fonte and Rodriguez and leaving Lambert out for the odd away game. I can't believe we're having this conversation when Saints are rooted to the bottom of the league and I've watched every single game this season scratching my head wondering when things will change..You're just trying to win favour with the masses by ignoring the simple fact that we are BOTTOM OF THE LEAGUE. I'll still cheer and shout his name at games and support the team but I can come on here and say how I really feel away from the players and manager. You scared they read these posts? I've heard less delusional tosh from the blew (very) few.
Oh, and I'll say this right now. We won't get relegated. Last time I said that I got loads of grief on here and we did. I strongly believe we will stay up.
Optimistic but probably wrong, but no harm done either way. Big grin now, it will make you feel better, could be worse, you could have been a Skate supporter, there is always someone worse off than yourself.

Great post isthatwotuwant. It would be suicidal to sack Nigel. He's a phenomonen, like Clough and Ferguson, who both had their blips, but who were given time. 4 promotions in 6 seasons doesn't lie. Yes one relegation, but took them straight back up, and stayed there. As would happen if we got relegated from the Prem. Sacking Nigel would be like getting rid of a member of the family. That should only happen in "The Godfather", so just as well there's no Italian hitmen around.

If the players dominate like they did against the spuds second half - then it makes it easy for the crowd to up their game.

Let's get in the Pubs - King Alfred - Prince of Wales - Joshua Tree - Station - Chapel-Bridge and many more and let's start enjoying ourselves and up our game.

No-one at all has said there were threats in the meeting. You're putting two and two together and getting five.

For all you know, they could have spent twenty seconds with "Nigel, you have my full backing, stop worrying" and the rest of the time picking signing targets for the January window.

I'm not saying it was like that, but it's just as much a guess as yours, the DE's or the Daily Flail's guesses as to what went on.

SaintDon13 --- when a key player is yellow carded most good managers will recognise, that as he is now in the eye of the referee, as a result the edge will be taken off his performance and he will substitute the player before the end of play for fear of him getting a red.
That is my experience over many years of watching and playing football, obviously it differs from yours but we are all entited to our opinions.
If anyone really thinks that by Cortese giving Nigel the yellow card, that, in itself, will improve Nigel's performance, they must be living in cuckoo land along with their pal Cortese.
There is no one at SMS with PL experience the only thing that will assist Nigel is to bring in help in the form of an experienced respected PL coach immediately.
The happy clappers who can't come up with any sensible suggestions apart from saying we're Nigel 'til we die and it doesn't matter if we go down as we will bounce back up and our season starts next week, are pathetic and talking crap and have been proved wrong time and time again.
Like it or lump it, at least I am suggesting something positive, if my proposal or something like it isn't taken up, then Nigel will be sacked by the end of November.
No change in players, no change in coaching staff, no change in tactics, equals no change in results .
Cortese's only remedy is to threaten Nigel with the sack -- and all will miraculously come right -- well I've got news for Cortese --the last miracle occured over 2000 years ago and there hasn't been one since!!
We get what you are saying....we are just sick of hearing it over over over and over again.
Say something new or make an appointment with the club. You are getting very boring.

schneiderlin,

subs: k.d, fox, hooiveld, jwp, chappers, mayuka, j-rod

also, 5/6 (7/8 inc. full backs) to attack

I must apologise to the happy clappers, I didn't realise that :-
a) continually praying that our season will start next week
b) we're Nigel 'til we die ---
c) it doesn't matter if he takes us down we will soon bounce back
d) sticking your head in the sand and waiting for a kick up the *ss is OK
e) not coming up with any sensible suggestions to improve things
f) believing that Cortese walks on water and is infallible
Were all the beliefs of rational, sensible people, to improve Saints' lot and I must apologise again most whole heartedly for doubting you.
My beliefs are :-
a) Nigel is a good manager for whom success has come too quickly
b)The PL is probably the best league in the world and Nigel, his coaching staff and players, have not adjusted to it
c) It is time to review the coaching staff's capabilties
d) There is no one with PL experience at SMS to help do this and assist Nigel
e) The easiest and most cost effective way of addressing this is by apppointing someone with experience in the PL to support Nigel
f) Threatening Nigel with the sack, as Cortese has done, is counter productive, from now on in, Nigel will be shi**ing himself every time the ball comes in to Saints half - how is that supposed to help?
g) IMO Cortese survived on the back of Markus, he is not a good manager, evidenced by him falling out with everyone from the Echo, the good old programme sellers, to MLT --- he should ask himself am I wrong or is everyone else? -- but his ego won't allow hime to!
I say again, if nothing changes at SMS, neither will the results and Nigel will be gone in the month, threatening Nigel with the red card isn't the answer.
Those are my beliefs and nothing will change them.

thebooooooorer, how the hell do you even think you know what went on in the meeting? how do you KNOW that NC gave NA a `yellow card`? simple answer, you dont and are doing your usual guess work and posting it as fact! if you want to guess fine, guess i have no problems with that, however your constant digs at NC and how he runs the club are getting beyond pathetic. others have said, and so will i, why did NC sack you?
oh and by the way, not every player gets taken off by the manager if they are booked! you say "That is my experience over many years of watching and playing football," well in all those years, have you ever seen a player sent off for 2 yellows? i have! have you ever seen a team get more than 3 yellows? i have! and the manager cant take all of the players off!
you are a sad fool who seems to have a bee in his bonnet over NC! why? what has he ever done to you? remember just cause you think you know whats happend dosent mean you DO KNOW.

Teborah, some of what you say makes sense, however your attacks on Cortese come across as fanatical and like you have an axe to grind because in whatever way, however it happened you failed as a manager. Fair play for wearing your heart on your sleeve and posting about how they got a consultant in to help you manage better etc. etc. I don't know if it worked but these are all like experiences. I guess I would appreciate it if you come up with some hard facts before rubbishing the chairman who apparently pursuaded Marcus to buy the club and stop transplanting your own life's experience into a situation you (like most of us) know nothing about.

Your allegations about the echo, programme sellers can and have been countered and I wish you would stop posting as though these were hard facts. just my opinion.

b) we're Nigel 'til we die ---
c) it doesn't matter if he takes us down we will soon bounce back
d) sticking your head in the sand and waiting for a kick up the *ss is OK
e) not coming up with any sensible suggestions to improve things
f) believing that Cortese walks on water and is infallible

Personally speaking, I think if we lose against Swansea - but especially if we lose heavilly - then Nigel will be sacked by the end of Monday. I hope he does turn things around though, because for all that he has already achieved he deserves to succeed. However, I just don't see him doing it. We simply do not have a strong enough first team anyway, especially the defence, to survive in the Premiership this season. Like it or not, it's a very ruthless game these days and Cortese is not known to be a particularly patient man. I feel absolutely certain that he has at least a few names seriously in-mind already.

P.s. We are 'The Saints' - NOT 'The Reds'. Bring back the red and white stripes.

I always thought from your posts you might be a Barnet lover. Edgar or no Edgar, I love the saints. woke up yesterday with a bad case of Edomwingiitis, but I appear to be ok now despite being stuck at Manchester surrounded by happy Mancunians. One red supporting taxi driver went on about how bad Man U's defence is. I advised should watch our highlights,
