Adkins: Midfield duo hold the key to Premier survival bid
8:00am Tuesday 20th November 2012 in Saints News
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Jack Cork
Nigel Adkins believes Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin have the potential to be a central midfield powerhouse pairing for Saints.
Cork’s return to the team after injury has resulted in four points from the last two games as Saints start to show the kind of form that could drag them to Premier League safety.
It should hardly be surprising when you consider that Cork has lost just 11 of the 52 games he has started since making a permanent move to the club from Chelsea just over a year ago.
More than that Adkins has been desperate to pair Cork and Schneiderlin together in a new look midfield that sees the 23-year-olds sitting in front of the back four.
With Cork’s energy and dynamism and Schneiderlin’s fantastic passing ability they look every inch a Premier League partnership.
“He (Cork) was yet again outstanding – him and Morgan Schneiderlin together,” raved Adkins.
“I played Jack Cork in every game after I signed him last season.
“He was called up for the Great Britain team for the Olympics which is a great honour obviously but we didn’t have him for pre-season.
“He came back and in his first game he got injured, he came back after that and got injured straightaway in his comeback game.
“We’ve not had an opportunity to have Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin together until now.
“They are two young 23-year-olds who I believe have got so much potential and we can get a good partnership going with them.“We also have young James Ward-Prowse who is going to be phenomenal for us and Steven Davis we have brought in and is still very young in footballling terms but has a wealth of experience he can help the players with.”
Schneiderlin and Cork also have enviable statistics in games they have started together over the past season and a bit.
In that time they have been on the losing side on just six out of 21 occasions.

Cork is the only one providing cover to the back four which has made all the difference. In his absence I would have used Chappers to keep the balance.

IMO Jack Cork is Adkins best signing so far. He's full of energy and always gives 110%, reminds a bit like a young Bryan Robson. The only thing Jack Cork needs to add to his locker is GOALS.

Much as I love Lallana, he's much happier runnning forwards than backwards. Cork and Spiderman together are worth their weight in gold.
I have to be honest, I didn't see Cork's contribution in its full glory until we were missing him; he's not showy, just very, very effective.
I don't care if he goes another season without scoring - it's a team game and he's a central member of the team.

4-2-3-1. Nigel must read this forum !! ;-) Davis, Shaw, Yosh, Fonte , Clyne at the back , corky and spider and the 2 holders in midfield , 3 attacking midfielders across a narrower midfield but with players who do run diagonally ( punch and Lalla ) , ramirez pulling the strings behind Sir Rickie and there is by far our best team, with Rooffelt, gayrod, Davis, fox and a few other super subs thats by far our best team.... maybe stick with Gazza instead of Davis. This was obvious weeks ago but with players out not possible to play....

He goes about his job in a very unpretentious way.
In fact he is at times hard to notice.
This is because he is constantly moving.
Gets involved, then away again.
An interseption here, a little one two there or quality through ball.
I think he is becoming a future England International.
We so need him to keep fit.
Spider too has improved now Cork has arrived back and taken the pressure off of him.
We beat a poor team Saturday but lets not underestimate this most needed and hard won, result.
The lift that these last 2 games have had for both the fans and the team is immeasurable.
We have witnessed during the previous 2 seasons, how our team have been able to dominate others.
Almost to the point of throwing in the towell.
I think the pieces are beginning to fall into place for us once again.
We are even begining to win over some of the "expert" pundits,(for what it's worth).
Bring on Newcastle.
COME ON YOU SAINTS

He is a fantastic player and should play but at the moment our midfield needs to control the oppositions to get the ball away from our half, Gaston is great at attacking from this and Davis and Cork better than controlling than Spider.

I share Velleity's view that Cork's contribution was only appreciated when he wasn't there, nothing fancy, but extremely effective and supportive to the back four. An absolute gold nugget.
If they can keep this team shape and cut down on silly errors, we are going to be very difficult to beat from now on. The key will be the results we obtain from matches against the teams in the same half of the table.
I think we will beat Newcastle with a strong performance. I think I may even invest some hard earned on a win bet. I'm also looking forward to being out of that bottom three very soon.

As for Spiderman and Cork, it was fantastic on Saturday and can only get better. With JWP, Davis and others - Chappers for example - we have a solid combo and the subs to offer Spiderman and Cork a rest when required.

Please everyone, ignore Kent and Dominatrix.
As for Spiderman and Cork, it was fantastic on Saturday and can only get better. With JWP, Davis and others - Chappers for example - we have a solid combo and the subs to offer Spiderman and Cork a rest when required.

He was close to signing for Norwich on dead line day but it fell through. Having a defensive midfielder like that gives a team so much balance.
We had all this talk at the beginning of the season about needed a new centre-back, but I think the last two games have shown that what we were missing was a holding midfielder to cover for Cork. I think we could do with signing one in January, possibly a 30-odd free agent who is looking to go into coaching as well, so won't mind not being in the match day squad too often.
I still think we need a CB, plus a defensive utility player would be perfect as well.

They only come on here because they have so little to do in their sad lives it gives them a purpose.
The intention being that they will dominate and totally disrupt the web site.
The purpose of this web site is to discuss and debate issues our great football club.
I find it frustrating to have to fly through the posts trying to find someone that is trying to debate the header story.
Or for that matter any other sensible side story.
I have to ask the question--- WHY--- are our supporters engaging with the consistent moronic rubbish posted on here by possibly 1 or 2 idivuals with multiple log ins and an obvious agenda.
My second question is,

Do you want this web site to have any credability or following?
If so, find a way to eject those individuals who continue to spoil what has been a great outlet for the Saints fans?

Then they are back peddling like mad. That has been evident in so many goals conceded.
If Corky and Spider can sit tight, allow Punch and Lalla to penetrate and feed off Rickie's nod downs and Gastons creativity, then our game of ball retention and passing will get the results.

As I said on the other thread it's why JWP can't get a start despite his brilliance. Gaston is class and cost £12m so starts. Puncheon is putting in man of the match performances so you can't drop him. Adam is captain and play maker in chief so always starts. Add in Corky and Morgan and there's no room.
Cork is the only one providing cover to the back four which has made all the difference. In his absence I would have used Chappers to keep the balance.

There were concerns about Morgans card situation and that he is close to suspension but we have depth in the midfield now so as long as we can keep them fit, less of a worry

i like to think that we have had our rough patch this season, all clubs get them, and can now push on to a respectable mid table position. well i hope so anyway. lets not forget that reading went from near bottom at christmas last year to win the league, i am not saying we would do that but mid table would be great.

i think its very obvious that losing corky put a big whole in the midfield, what we need is cover for him if he were to be injured again or suspended. however i thnk that combination of cork and morgan in the centre of the park is the best pairing we have, yes we have other midfielders who can cover but NA has tried them and its not looked as good. what we cant do though is underestimate morgans part in the partnership. NA said last year that he was one of the best midfielders in the champ and could go on to be big in the prem.
