Midfield duo key to Saints' Premier League survival
10:03am Tuesday 20th November 2012 in Saints News
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Morgan Schneiderlin
Nigel Adkins believes Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin have the potential to be a central midfield powerhouse pairing for Saints.
Cork’s return to the team after injury has resulted in four points from the last two games as Saints start to show the kind of form that could drag them to Premier League safety.
It should hardly be surprising when you consider that Cork has lost just 11 of the 52 games he has started since making a permanent move to the club from Chelsea just over a year ago. More than that, Adkins (pictured left) has been desperate to pair Cork and Schneiderlin together in a new look Continued: Page 37 midfield that sees the 23-year-olds sitting in front of the back four.
With Cork’s energy and dynamism and Schneiderlin’s fantastic passing ability they look every inch a Premier League partnership.
“He (Cork) was yet again outstanding – him and Morgan Schneiderlin together,” raved Adkins.
“I played Jack Cork in every game after I signed him last season.
“He was called up for the Great Britain team for the Olympics which is a great honour obviously but we didn’t have him for pre-season.
“He came back and in his first game he got injured, he came back after that and got injured straightaway in his comeback game.
“We’ve not had an opportunity to have Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin together until now.
“They are two young 23-year-olds who I believe have got so much potential and we can get a good partnership going with them.“We also have young James Ward-Prowse who is going to be phenomenal for us and Steven Davis we have brought in and is still very young in footballling terms but has a wealth of experience he can help the players with.”
Schneiderlin and Cork also have enviable statistics in games they have started together over the past season and a bit.
In that time they have been on the losing side on just six out of 21 occasions.

Incredible setup at SMS and great training facilities.
I go to watch my team always with great pride of knowing they are at the pinnicle of south coast football.

All I have to say is that I think Jack Cork is a large part of the reason why the performance in the last two games has been so much better; good defensive cover from the midfield was always lacking.
He's very low key; easy to miss his contribution, so well done to the management team for seeing it and sticking with him.

The partnership between Cork and Morgan is the most important thing for the team this year. They're the engine room that will buffer the defence and give the forwards freedom to play.
It's funny because Anglo-French partnerships don't always work but when they do the results can be spectacular. Think of Concorde, the Channel Tunnel, Stereolab and, er, my dad who swears blind he had a go on Bridget Bardot back in the 60s before she went mental.

- Mary Tudor and Louis XII (he died because they tried too hard - and failed - to produce an heir).
- Strassie and the French administration, French opening hours, all French drivers, most French waiters (but the waitresses are forgiven) and nearly every French shop assistant (male & female).

As for Anglo-French relations, let's not forget how during the war we united to help crush those bad prats (and the Nazis WERE prats) to the East. Southampton are learning the lessons of history well.

I have to be honest and say on a few occasions last season that I didn't think JC bought much to team at times. But his absence and subsequent return to the first team has certainly shown me that he brings a lot to the team with his style of play. He has taken pressure of the defenders and also MS who has 1 goal and an assist in 2 games. Keep up the goodwork and I do believe they may become 2 of the best midfielders in th BPL.
So, I've totally changed my opinion of him; I see him as a pretty key player now and I think he's terrific in partnership with Spiderman.

I rate Steven Davis ahead of Schneiderlin at the moment, that said Morgan is playing well and it could unbalance the side to pull him out on a high.
The thing with players like Corky and Spider is that you don't really notice how good they are until they're not in the team. When Spider got injured this season we turned to absolute crud. I think our revival has been sparked firstly by getting him back and then by getting Cork back.
Now it's game on. I actually feel sorry for the rest of the league.

However, the problem with the Saints is that we are very vulnerable defensively and once the ball is in our box it generally goes in the net.
Attack is the best form of defense. We need one man in D/CM to protect the defense and also allow the other two midfielders (Gaston and Cork) to move forward, either getting it to a lone striker (Rickie) or getting it on the wings to Lallana or Puncheon.
For this job to protect the defense and allow the other two to get forward by getting it out to them (without "Route 1"), I think Davis is more effective at that job than Schneiderlin.

I reckon that with Ramirez sitting just behind him and with Lals and Punch cutting in from the wings there should be plenty of service, but is anyone else clinical enough to take the chances that don't fall to Rickie? (I don't know btw...)
Let's hope for another 3 points against the Toon and then we can see if we are now beginning to get a foothold in the league and hopefully climb the table.

Talking of recent times, how many of your players could seriously challenge to get in a South Coast - Last decade team?
James
De Zeeuw Campbell
Johnson Hreidarsson
Diarra Muntari
Stone Taylor
Yakubu Defoe
Subs - Hislop, Distin, Berger, Boateng, Sheringham

Really! Still I guess that's what raw emotions do. I do remember one of your teams finished in 12th a few years back. I would think that team would turn your current lot over.
Big big week for your club over the next week - could define your season. My guess is that 2 straight wins could give you a chance of finishing in the top15

- JK Rowling's grandparents.
- Mary Tudor and Louis XII (he died because they tried too hard - and failed - to produce an heir).
- Strassie and the French administration, French opening hours, all French drivers, most French waiters (but the waitresses are forgiven) and nearly every French shop assistant (male & female).
How's little Retford? Did he score with any of the wonderful NHS nurses?
As for Anglo-French relations, let's not forget how during the war we united to help crush those bad prats (and the Nazis WERE prats) to the East. Southampton are learning the lessons of history well.
Also, let's not forget that they helped decorate London with a lot of commemorative monuments to the Napoleonic wars.

These jobs together make him a very good player.

I rate Steven Davis ahead of Schneiderlin at the moment, that said Morgan is playing well and it could unbalance the side to pull him out on a high.
Time will tell, hope i'm wrong.
I'm not being silly I'm just not sure. Is it tackling and defensive cover? Is it passing? Is it playmaker? I understand the role of the others but not fully worked his out yet.
, or an impact off the bench like Saturday. Morgan is on his 4th yellow so no doubt SD will get his chance to show he should start alongside JC. It's great to have this kind of competition for a starting place!

I mean, Israel might be bombing the living daylights out of Gaza but you'd see the public's sympathies turn against the Palestinians pretty quickly if they retaliated by blasting out episodes of 'Keeping Up Appearances' at targets in Tel Aviv. I think the use of 'Birds Of A Feather' in a combat scenario officially constitutes a war crime. And rightly so.

Fair point. I would take Bridge over Hreiderssan.
I would probably put Pahars slightly ahead of Boateng - but only slightly - as he did go to Milan straight after. Defoe's goal to game ratio at Pompey was 1 in 2 - so no comparison - and he he was an England regular during his time at Pompey.
I think Niemi was a good goalie, but even Hislop lasted 10 years at the top and was great at Newcastle. But Niemi was v good at Saints, so maybe he could make the bench.
Bale, Walcott and Oxy were all up and coming at your club before they left, but maybe Bale could edge Berger out - but only maybe - as Berger was class - but fading.
Sheringham had only just stopped playing for England when he came to Pompey - so Lambert is not getting a look in.
So, here we are. I am sure you will disagree though

I have received details of an advert soon to be placed in free ads.
Sits Vac.
Small south coast L1 club invites application for a new manager. The position offers potential to experience a different league every year. Following recent relegations from Premiership and Championship we fully expect to be playing L2 next season and Conference the year after. The applicant should be fully able to operate in the shadow of it's wealthy and successful neighbour with it's Premiership status and numerous international players. Ability to work with a fully disfunctional side consisting of youth, failed professionals, journe
ymen and just plain donkeys is essential. An attractive package is available. The selected individual will be given the benefit of a one week rolling contract. This will be paid weekly in advance to ensure payment is made and will be at or near the government minimum wage. Illegal immigrants are welcome to apply at a lower rate but with the benefit of cash in hand payments if the gate money is high enough. Travellers are also very welcome to apply. Additional benefits would include free parking of your caravans on land adjacent to the ground on land we are hoping to acquire soon. Free grazing is available on our cabbage patch of a pitch for your horses. For those of you with donkeys we should be able to fit them seamlessly into our current squad alongside the existing ones. Ablilty to deal with a fully delusional fanbase would also be useful. Quiet periods would be provided by the club. These would normally be during the last 10 minutes of games when the blue few have tired of booing their team and gone home. This situation should improve over the coming seasons as we are planning to make our strip a darker blue.. This will automatically transform the blue few into the bluer fewer. No applications will be entertained from present or former employees mof the Inland Revenue.

The truth is that what pushed Hitler to kill himself was actually knowing that, after dealing with the 8 million crazy Russians at the front gate of his bunker, he still would have to face "La Resistance"... and that was clearly too much for him!
It ruined my understanding of the role the First World War played in the liberation of la femme moderne françaises. Guess I'll just have to check it out on Wiki.fr

Don’t think that you can start with 442 in the Premier League, certainly not with our back five. Playing with one up front, 4411 or 451 – however you like to read it – we look a much better balanced side and provide more cover down the flanks and in front of the back four. In Lambert’s absence, J Rod and perhaps Guly can play the up front role where the key requisites are ability to get on the end of crosses, hold the ball up and lay it off. Certainly not Mayuka (too small and not strong enough to hold it up with his back to goal) and probably not Lee (similar shortcomings but not so pronounced).
maybe this is a hint .that were going to stick with 4 4 2 instead of playing 3 in the middle .i think morgan benefits from jack being back as he was deeper with davis, jacks a better defender morgan his the better passer playmakler so it gives the side a better balance.also the emergence of shaw on the left as vastly improved the side.leaving maya in the center and not having to come over in cover .strecthing the defense.bringing fox on later is a good idea.as luke could burn out he is only 17 .but you would never think it .we have given jwp 5 years this week.now sign this little lad up,what a fantastic acadamy we have .built htough the solid infrastructure we have had for years now.alex ferguson highlighted this after the facup match ,while we were league one 3 years ago now .the future is red in white .the souths longest serving premier league club and always will be
Ramirez is obviously the best in the hole but Lallana can play there too, as can probably the much improved Puncheon. But these two give us great attacking options on the flanks, going wide or cutting in. Morgan and Cork holding and box to box (alternating at times but prefer Morgan deeper) every time for me. Davis and JWP are strong replacements, however.

They all made the same point first.
Cork is the reason for the change in fortunes.
their second point was different.
Puncheon was greedy but good.
Lallana made more effort to help Shaw than he did Fox.
Yoshida so nearly scored an overhead kick and was dependable in defence.
All these points were eye witness and not due to the prompting of MOTD.
All of them were also impressed with the fact that when QPR pulled one back Saints just steamrollered on exactly as they had before the goal.
Their opinion was that Fox coming on was because we expected a push from QPR and experience would be needed, it did not happen and Fox was able to attack more than defend.
There have been comments that QPR were rubbish and we can only beat teams that are sh!t...good, just need to find one more team like that and we finish 17th at the end of the season.
I think though that a win was what was needed and will give some confidence to improve further.
Support the Saints, I do.

Ok, what odds on the time of the exodus? Well if you can have an 'exodus' with so few there. I'll have £1000 on 63rd minute, I think they might hang about longer tonight due to new manager.

How can they boo the manager who they all wanted and hasn't been there 5 minutes? Appy left the day after being booed.
Anyone heard the gate yet? Has it dropped or are they holding firm at the magnificent 11000?
To be fair in league 1 you do expect the fair weathers to drop away. Embarrassing as it is we must admit our gates dropped to 22000 in that league.

No disrespect to NC and WW but it must be a tad embarrassing.”
I also can't imagine having a run down sh1te hole for a ground and pathetic attendances or having to beg steal and borrow other cubs players each month.
That must also be a tad embarrassing””
I also can't imagine losing at home to Brentford in front of only 11,000 and starting to leave with 20 minutes left to play and then 7,000 people booing your own team which technically speaking isn't really yours.
That must be a tad embarrassing even for fish fiddling mongs”
I also can't imagine having a manager who couldn't get away fast enough after getting booed by his own supporters the night before and also having a ground that when spelt backwards says nottarf krap which is kind of apt I suppose.
Even so that must be a tad embarrassing even for inbred wannabe John Westwwod w@nkers who need a good Jimmy Saville seeing to.
I also can't imagine trying to buy your own club with less than 2,000 of the bestest ever greatest most bestest and greatest fans ever TM when most have only pledged the initial £100 but have no intentions of actually paying £1000 as the social won't give it to them.
That must be a tad embarrassing even for the prepubescent fish f@cking tw@ts that post utter sh1te on another teams site because they are such sad little westwood wannabe w@nkers
I also can't imagine losing to the bottom side in league one which would now mean you would soon be bottom when ten points are deducted for cheating and generally being one of the most dishonest and despised football clubs in football.
That must be a tad embarrassing even for a load of plastic cockney inbred chavs, of whom some still post on another clubs site pretending to be fans of that club thinking they are clever but really are showing what a sad bunch of mongs they really are.”
I also can't imagine being a sad fish fiddling pr1ck wanting to spend so much time spewing out the same old boring and childish load sh1te about a bigger and richer club with a bright future rather than wallowing in the demise and slow death of your own p1ss poor little club on your own site.
That must be a tad embarrassing.
I also can't imagine losing at home yet again and six games in a row in league one when your superior neighbours have just given QPR a footballing lesson and now picked up 4 points from 6 which is a bit better than 0 points from 18.
That must be a tad embarrassing which would explain why the spineless fish worrying skunts aren't playing tonight and are all indoors with their westwood wannabe jim- jams on but not blowing their plastic trumpets.......sssh, sssh”
I also can't imagine losing 7 (seven) games on the bounce and only having about 9,000 of the bestest ever best most bestest and greatest best fans ever TM at a home game booing at the start and at half time and at the end of the game.
That must be a tad embarrassing......SK

As a verb (to shh), I reckon it would be shhre and be conjugated like this: Je shhais Tu shhais Il shhait Nous shhaisons Vous shhaites Ils shhont. So, 'les mushes shhont et les skunts disparaissent'. Or, in the past, 'les mushes ont shhrait et les skunts ont disparu.'Baddesley Bill wrote: El sssssshhhhhh... (that's sssshhh in spanish btw)Great bilingual ssshhhhshing BB. I must say that there is one thing, and one thing only, that I envy about the Portsmouth fans.
Now that we're in the Prem, games seem to be so ghenting far apart; Portsmouth seem to be playing (and losing, of course) every other day.

I have posted on the skunt site but only in support of the PST and encouraging them to put their hands in their pockets and get rid of the crooks.
However, what they have posted on here is total garbage, has no point or purpose and is purely designed to try and distroy our site. Therefore there are no limits.
I'm the same in business. My word is my bond and I don't start a fight. However, if someone else tries to pull a fast one then I deem that they, not I, decided that there are no rules and that has to apply to my approach as well. I have no limits.

De Zeeuw Campbell
Johnson Bridge
Diarra Muntari

Yakubu Defoe

Don't actually mind a bit of footy banter.
I must be honest, I can't remember how good Svenson was at your club. Enlighten me
De zueew was voted Barnsleys greatest ever player, and was so inspirational at our club.
Campbell was still a full England international when he arrived and was the team leader - so Svensson would need to be rather good to displace him.
Mullins, I think you must be having a laugh. Diarra was sold for 22 million to Madrid. He ran our midfield, he was something else.
Jose Moreno wanted Muntari as soon as he got to Inter Milan. He was a left sided midfielder. Very difficult for Bale to get past him and Taylor at the level he was playing at for Saints. Admitted - he is an immense talent - but not the whole package at your club.
Yakubu is probably the strongest player I have ever seen in the Premiership. He was also incredibly quick when he first came to Fratton. He trailed only Thierry Henry in the Prem goal scoring charts for 4 years before he went to Everton , and was their record signing. I think Beattie has a fair bit to do yet.
Johnson was a right back - If I assume you are referring to Glen.

It's funny because Anglo-French partnerships don't always work but when they do the results can be spectacular. Think of Concorde, the Channel Tunnel, Stereolab and, er, my dad who swears blind he had a go on Bridget Bardot back in the 60s before she went mental.
