Saints move out of the relegation zone, and up to 17th position, as a result of today's win. The victory also represents the club's first clean sheet of the Premier League season, while it is the first time they have recorded back-to-back victories in the competition this term. Thanks for joining us today. We will have reaction on the website soon. Our next blog will be on Wednesday night, when Norwich are the visitors to St Mary's.

4:52pm

FULL-TIME: Saints 2 Newcastle 0

4:51pm

SAINTS SUBSTITUTION: Luke Shaw off, Jos Hooiveld on (90+2 mins). A standing ovation from the Saints fans for the teenage full-back.

4:48pm

DISALLOWED GOAL: Jay Rodriguez is played through and lashes the ball into the back of the net in the 89th minute. The goal is ruled out for offside. Replays suggested Rodriguez was actually level with the last defender.

4:45pm

BOOKING: Cheick Tiote yellow carded (86 minutes).

4:40pm

CHANCE: Jason Puncheon's 81st minute corner finds Jose Fonte at the back post. The defender, who had peeled off his marker, headed the ball back across goal and off the bar. Moments earlier, Tim Krul had saved well at the near post from Steven Davis after Adam Lallana's clever pass had opened up space for him.

4:37pm

SAINTS SUBSTITUTION: Gaston Ramirez off, Steven Davis on (78 minutes).

4:35pm

SAINTS SUBSTITUTION: Rickie Lambert off, Jay Rodriguez on (76 minutes).

4:32pm

CHANCE: Danny Simpson's cross from the right picks out Davide Santon at the back post. His thumping header is going in, but Paulo Gazzaniga produces a glorious save, diving down low to his right to tip the ball clear in the 73rd minute.

4:30pm

CHANCE: Adam Lallana's clever reverse pass picks out Jason Puncheon, who hits a low left foot shot that cannons off the near post in the 70th minute.

4:28pm

BOOKING: Gaston Ramirez is yellow carded for kicking the ball away in the 69th minute.

4:26pm

CHANCE: Cheick Tiote wins a challenge with Adam Lallana and drives towards the box in the 67th minute. The Newcastle player displays some nice skill to work some room, before curling a right-foot shot a couple of yards over the bar.

4:24pm

PENALTY APPEAL: Gaston Ramirez drives into the box in the 65th minute and cuts past Cheick Tiote, who leaves a leg out. Ramirez goes over it, but referee Martin Atkinson says no penalty.

4:19pm

GOAL: Saints 2 Newcastle 0 (Gaston Ramirez 60): Jason Puncheon plays the ball into Adam Lallana in the area. Puncheon overlaps and is picked out by Lallana's back heel. Puncheon then hits a low delivery across the face of goal, which a diving Tim Krul spills straight into the path of Ramirez, who makes no mistake from close range.

4:15pm

CHANCE: Saints nearly double the lead with an impressive move in the 55th minute involving Gaston Ramirez and Jason Puncheon. It ends with Puncheon slipping in Adam Lallana on the overlap, but Tim Krul does well to save his curling left foot shot at close range.

4:14pm

CHANCE: Vurnon Anita is played through in the 54th minute by Papiss Cisse, but his shot is saved by Paulo Gazzaniga, with Jose Fonte having put him under pressure.

4:11pm

CHANCE: Newcastle register their first effort on target, as Vurnon Anita's corner picks out Demba Ba, whose header from about 16 yards flies towards the top corner and is saved fairly comfortably by Paulo Gazzaniga in the 53rd minute.

3:49pm

HALF-TIME: Saints 1 Newcastle 0

3:45pm

BOOKING: Mike Williamson goes into the book for an ice-hockey style body check on Gaston Ramirez in the 43rd minute.

3:39pm

GOAL: Saints 1 Newcatsle 0 (Adam Lallana 34): Rickie Lambert's long ball down the right is chased by Jason Puncheon. Tim Krul comes out of his area to clear, but hits the ball straight to Nathaniel Clyne. The right-back takes a touch and tries a volley from the right wing, with Krul out of position. He doesn't get enough on it, but the ball is headed clear straight to Gaston Ramirez, who takes a touch and squares to Lallana to tap in.

3:37pm

CHANCE: Saints get another free-kick 25 yards out. This time Rickie Lambert takes it, bending it round the wall and off the angle between post and crossbar in the 33rd minute.

3:36pm

CHANCE: Best chance of the game so far. Gaston Ramirez plays a nicely-weighted ball down the left channel in the 32nd minute that releases Rickie Lambert. He drives forward, then cuts the ball back to Jason Puncheon in space. However, his low left foot shot is turned away by Tim Krul.

3:28pm

CHANCE: Adam Lallana is fouled by Shane Ferguson 25 yards out. The free-kick favours a left-footer, so Gaston Ramirez takes it, curling the ball over the wall, only for Tim Krul to dive to his left and palm away to safety in the 25th minute.

3:25pm

BOOKING: Jose Fonte cautioned for sliding in on Papiss Cisse with a high foot in the 22nd minute.

3:14pm

CHANCE: Brilliant run down the right by Puncheon in the 12th minute. His low ball across the six-yard box is cleared by Danny Simpson, but straight back to the winger, who hits a low shot that is held by Krul.

3:09pm

CHANCE: Nathaniel Clyne takes Gaston Ramirez's lay-off 30 yards out and hits a right-foot shot towards goal in the seventh minute. The ball hits Adam Lallana's feet, diverting it towards the other corner, but the ball drifts a yard or two wide.

3:08pm

CHANCE: Demba Ba with the first real effort of the game, heading Shane Ferguson's chipped cross wide of goal in the sixth minute. Before kick-off, Alan Pardew was given a warm reception by the Saints fans.

2:57pm

The teams are out onto the pitch at St Mary's. Kick-off just a few minutes away. Stay with us for updates throughout the match.

2:44pm

The rain is lashing down at St Mary's, which could have an impact on the game. Grey skies all around the place at the moment, so it looks like the players are in for a soaking.

2:23pm

A win for Saints today will lift them out of the bottom three, and will leave them just three points behind their opponents, Newcastle. A draw or a defeat and Nigel Adkins' men will remain in 19th position ahead of their midweek fixture against Norwich, at St Mary's.

2:12pm

One player who could have been lining up for the opposing side is Saints right-back Nathaniel Clyne, who nearly went to Newcastle in the summer, only to opt for St Mary's instead. The England Under-21 international has this week been explaining the reasons behind that decision...

I was close (to going there). They are a good a side but I chose Southampton because it was closer to where I live. It's where I preferred to come. I didn't get a chance to speak to Alan Pardew. Southampton just appealed to me more. They've got good facilities here, the way they play football has been good and I was promised first-choice football. I thought I was going to get more game time, which I have been getting, so I am pleased. I have no regrets about coming here. I have been playing a lot of games for the club and that's what I like. I didn't really want to be on the bench. I just wanted to be playing, getting game time and improving as a player.

Saints defender Nathaniel Clyne

2:09pm

Saints, as expected, are unchanged from the team that beat QPR 3-1 at Loftus Road last Saturday. Newcastle with five changes from the side that draw 1-1 with Maritimo in the Europa League on Thursday.

2:07pm

THE LINE-UPS

NEWCASTLE: Krul, Simpson, Williamson, S Taylor, Santon, Gutierrez, Tiote, Anita, Ferguson, Cisse, Ba.

Subs: Harper, Tavernier, Perch, Bigirimana, Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Ranger.

1:51pm

While his relationship with Nicola Cortese might have been "difficult", Alan Pardew has had plenty of positive things to say about his time at St Mary’s too...

I enjoyed my time there and I am looking forward to going back. There will be some memories because we won a trophy when I was there and we were -10 points and we built a side. It will be interesting to meet a few of the people there who I had great relationships with. There are some great players there who have done phenomenally well. Rickie Lambert, who I took to the club, I am so proud of him. I always said he could be a Premier League player and he is proving it. (Adam) Lallana and (Jose) Fonte, people like that, and Kelvin (Davis), it will be nice to see those guys who are still in and around the team. They have made the transition well. They have acquitted themselves very well and are unlucky not to have won against the Manchester clubs on both occasions. I signed (Lambert) at 28 from Bristol Rovers. Plenty had talked about him, but no-one went for him. I paid £1m for him and I said I thought he could take us to the Premier League, and he has proved me right, so I am pleased about that.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew

FORM GUIDE

Saints (last six, league only): D L L L D W

Newcastle (last six, league only): L D W D L L

Saints top scorer (league only): Rickie Lambert 5

Newcastle top scorer (league only): Demba Ba 8

1:27pm

They certainly did have a starting XI by the time Pardew was given the boot, though. His successor, Nigel Adkins, took up the squad and got the best out of it, guiding them to promotion from League One in his first season. But the Saints manager was adamant this week that he has nothing to be grateful to Pardew for, despite the players that were left by him...

I don't think I owe him any debt at all. When I came to this football club we were 21st in League One and now we are in the Premier League. Some of the players may be the same but this is my team. We've just had back-to-back promotions and we're doing ever so well in our forward progression. Whatever situation arose, he moved on and I am the manager of Southampton Football Club. We have come a hell of a long way in a short space of time.

Saints manager Nigel Adkins

1:21pm

Alan Pardew was quizzed this week about his time at Saints, with the Newcastle boss revealing that he enjoyed a sense of relief when he was sacked, citing a strained relationship with chairman Nicola Cortese. Here’s what Pardew had to say...

If I'm honest, I was quite happy about it. I thought I'd done a good job but it was proving to be very very difficult to work with the owner. I wouldn't have jumped before I was pushed, but it was a difficult period working with Mr Cortese. We just didn't see eye to eye. There was no nastiness in there, he just didn't want me as his manager and I think that was obviously coming through to me. I had a great relationship with the fans though and our performances were strong bearing in mind we had minus ten points and didn't really have a starting XI when I arrived.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew

1:14pm

NEWCASTLE SQUAD NEWS: Nigel Adkins might not have any concerns when it comes to his squad, but Alan Pardew certainly does. Midfielder Cheick Tiote returns after missing out on Thursday’s Europa League draw with Maritimo through suspension, but there are a host of absentees for the visitors. Skipper Fabricio Coloccini is serving the last match of a three-game domestic ban and will join influential winger Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring) and midfielder Yohan Cabaye (groin) on the sidelines. Striker Shola Ameobi (groin) and midfielder Gabriel Obertan (toe) remain doubts. Winger Jonas Gutierrez (knee) and utility man James Perch (thigh) are available, while striker Papiss Cisse has a chance of playing despite picking up a kick on the thigh against Maritimo. Fellow frontman Nile Ranger, who used to be on the books at Saints, has been added to the squad.

1:08pm

SAINTS SQUAD NEWS: As well as three points at Loftus Road, Saints also emerged from last weekend’s ‘El Sackico’ contest without any fresh injury or suspension worries. That means only the injured duo of Frazer Richardson and Richard Chaplow remain unavailable, with Nigel Adkins likely to go with the same XI that beat QPR last weekend.

1:03pm

1:01pm

Hello, and welcome to the Daily Echo’s blog covering this afternoon’s Premier League contest between Saints and Newcastle, at St Mary’s. It’s the return of Alan Pardew, who is back at the stadium for the first time since being sacked as Southampton boss in August 2010. Pardew leads his injury and suspension-hit Magpies team into town, hoping to find a result that could ignite their season. After finishing fifth last term, it has been a disappointing start to the season for Newcastle, who are currently in 14th position and without a win in their last five games across all competitions. For second-bottom Saints, a win today would lift them above Reading and Aston Villa, taking them out of the relegation zone. It is Nigel Adkins’ men who possess the momentum going into this one, having won their crucial basement battle with QPR last week, a result that triggered the sacking of Mark Hughes at Loftus Road and ensured Adkins strengthened his position at St Mary’s. Stay with us throughout the afternoon for the build-up, team news and match updates.

Well, here we go. The eight-day wait is over.

It's a good time to play them but, as Puppy said on the other thread, we can't expect them to roll over.

Have fun at the Joshua Tree. Wish I could be there with the little Strassies, it's about time Seedhouse bought us all a pint!

3-1 Saints but only if we play to our strengths.

The vote is interesting. When I registered (WIN), I was probably first and it showed 100% for a win. In no time, there has been a swing towards LOSE. At the time of posting, if my maths are right, possibly 9 votes (64%) for WIN, 3 (21%) DRAW, 2 (14%) LOSE. So, the question is, of the first 14 votes, who clicked LOSE? I doubt if it's Saints fans believing they're being realistic or hedging their bets. So, if my hunch is true, how long have the two well-known skunts been salivating behind their PCs waiting for the thread to open so as to register LOSE?

I guess they just can't stay away.

London a couple of times. I'm going to liverpool next week with 6 Liverpool fans and I wasn't able to get a ticket for the Southampton section as they were snapped up by season ticket holders. Any ideas on how I might get a ticket. I'd really appreciate any help. My email address if anyone has any ideas is jasoncurtin@eircom.n

Yeah... I know he needs experience but at what cost? We seem to be a goal down every time he plays.
But I am behind him (for now) and wish him and the team a clean sheet.

The future is Gazzanigga - he has to get experience. He can't get that on the bench behind Davis or Boruc. Look what happened to Bart - we don't want the same thing to happen with Gazza!

Yeah... He went on holiday for 10 mins of the 2nd half :-D
I soooo hope he has a quiet game but with Ba and Cisse it could be tough.

Gazza part of the Future of the club, so we have to give him time. Think he has done well so far considering his age and the amount of pressure he is under. Has to be one of the youngest goalies in the prem who get's regular starts. Only concern i have is our defenders passing back to him, puts him in a awkward position sometimes.

tbh a sensible, objective look at the fixture list when it came out would have benefitted alot of people.

It was widely regarded and commented upon that Saints had a really tough fixture list for the start of the season. It's been a rough ride, but we are now playing the teams that we have a real chance of beating.
Personally, given how we have played I think we've done bloody well.
Ok so the final results haven't been great up until recently, however when you look at how we've played in those defeats you realise that this is a great squad with great potential.
I don't think we will finish high up the table this season, however I do believe that we will stay up.

Annihilation! And we beat the woodwork and officials.

Still, the WUMs know better don't they?

Nigel's out of his depth, the defence is no better than an average Championship defence, the midfield is too slow and our strikers waste too many chances.

OR .........

Now they've started to settle in, Gazza looks promising (and made a world-class save), the centre backs were fantastic (Fonte has proved me wrong), the fullbacks look like they've played at this level all their lives. (Did you see how Clyne headed away all the balls coming across the box? So much better than when Bale blew him away.), Cork has made a huge difference, Spiderman grows by the game, Punch is a revelation, Rickie makes something happen every game, even when he's not at his best (brilliant ball through to Punch which led to the first), Lallana is back to his best and Ramirez is starting to settle.

Credit for much of this goes to the management team. I wonder if we would have played and won this well (and last week) if the boo boys had had their way and replaced Nigel.

I just wish refs could be 'retrained' after an abysmal performance like that.

Oh, and I wish I was in the Joshua Tree right now.

I should not reply and encourage a clearly sick man, however Trebor mint is locked in some warped nightmare he cannot escape from...i try and picture the sad man...

...i see a sad and lonely individual on medication desperately trying to make sense of the world, one were the greatest fans and club in the world disappear up his own bottom whilst nasty villain Cortese ruins everything else with his terrible bill paying antics....

...of course portsmuffs cold blooded 120 million debt does not enter his mind...sad, sad man, my sympathy Tebourba, I hope you get well one day.

And me.
..... and me! Took ages to get home, no one mentioned the road works in Bevois Valley! I could murder a pint, never mind got some Speckled Hen in the fridge.

Just fantastic Glad that NA has started listening to us fans 442 (4411) is what we all said Norwich will be a big a test on Wednesday

Was Rickie sub just tactical - if so then same team please.

So that is 1st team U21 U18 all winners
The future is bright. It is red and white.
Rickie picked up a knock just after half time, NA said he didn't know how bad yet but was having ice treatment, but didn't sound too positive about him playing Wednesday. Fingers crossed, the only other one that I saw take a knock was Spider who was caught by tackle from behind and may have had a dead leg, but played on regardless.
