Defensive improvements need to continue - Adkins

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins knows his team can score goals and is more concerned with whether the south coast side can build on their first clean sheet of the season when they face Norwich tonight.

Saints have found goals easy to come by since ending a seven-year top-flight exile, with their struggles instead coming at the other end.

They endured a record-breaking bad start defensively and conceded 28 goals in their opening 10 matches.

However, their backline has vastly improved in recent weeks and they collected their first league shutout when they beat Newcastle on Sunday.

"We've had 13 different goalscorers this season so we've got goals throughout the team, but the important thing for us is can we build on the clean sheet from the last game against Newcastle," Adkins said.

"We had a steady and stable back four and goalkeeper which is something we haven't had since the start of the campaign due to injuries, and the players are all working very hard as a team together.

"The players are working very hard on the training ground and what we've got is a group of players who are getting the just rewards for putting the work in home and away.

"We've accustomed ourselves very quickly the demands of the Premier League.

"We talk about lessons learned throughout the campaign and the players are working very, very hard to improve.

"There's a forward momentum about ourselves, and a growing belief about everybody.

"Sunday's performance was really good. We've got Gaston Ramirez, Adam Lallana, and Jason Puncheon with Rickie Lambert, and there was a good solid base behind them as a platform for some great attacking football that got the supporters off their feet at the weekend."

Top scorer Lambert has overcome a knock and should feature tonight against former Rochdale team-mate Grant Holt.

Lambert came off in the 2-0 defeat of Newcastle due to the leg complaint, but trained yesterday and should be involved against the Canaries.

However, the game could come too soon for Danny Fox after missing Sunday with a knee complaint, while Frazer Richardson and Richard Chaplow are also expect to remain sidelined.

I think tonights game will be tough but winnable,Norwich are a good battling team so it wont be easy,Luke Shaw might just need protecting a little bit as Norwich may have targeted him as a bit weaker due to his age& experience BUT i expect the young man to play as well as he has been.3 ponts would be lovely & opens up the gap for Twitchers QPR.

Cork and Spider are the key players to a sound defensive set up, if they play well as has been proven in the last couple of games, the defenders have more confidence to play well and so on.
3-1 Gaston 1st goal, and I would'nt be surprised if Jay Rod starts in place of Lambo tonight given the tough away game on Saturday.

Yep. Rickie can't play 3 games in 6 days. He can't play 2 in 7 for the full 90 minutes. The chap who coached him and Holt at Rochdale said in yesterdays article that fitness was a problem when he was 23! Hugely talented football, not a natural athlete though.

Rickie was born in Liverpool and supported them. He will want to play on Saturday for sure. We spent £7m on Jay Rod, it's time to step up. Rickie was £1m.

Lets hope the boys carry on from the final whistle on sunday. That was one game i did'nt want to end. The whole team looked strong and composed from Gazza to Rickie.
Norwich are no mugs and i think would be happy to take a point. They have some really good players that will need close attention if we are going to bag the three points.
I cant make it but will try and find a way to watch it. We need the fans to be very very vocal for the whole of the game. It was great sat in the Chapel on SUNDAY with my gordie mate and hear the noise coming from three sides of the stadium. The coffin dwellers were i was did a least clap but how ever hard i tried they would'nt sing. When i'm sat in my S T seat in the Itchen you dont get the same sound effect.
Three points tonight lets get out of the bottom three and start moving up this league. We should fear no one, we are good enough to get to halfway at least.

Lambo to start tonight, J Rod on Saturday as per the Man City away game where we need more energy. Rickie will then be itching to get on and make an impact if we need him.

We need everything we've got tonight from the off in my opinion and, besides, Rickie will be particularly fired up in trying to outscore Holt tonight.

Nigel knows what he's doing and whatever he decides I'm sure will be for the right reasons - he sees them in training so will know if Rickie is struggling, but personally I think he'll be raring to go tonight, as all of them will.

For those that sing in the chapel, on Sunday it was better, it can be better still, one match at a time. The crowd being up for it all game and vocally so loud has a huge effect on the visitors, both the fans and the team.
I think that the frenetic pace on the pitch is encouraged by the frenetic loud encouragement from all four sides, well three and a half sides anyway.
Saints proved that they are premier standard. They understand you don't take a breather during play and they are fit enough to manage the responsibility.
Respect for other teams is fine yet with a team such as this they need to display their own abundant skills. There is no need to be intimidated by any one in this division.
Come on you Saints, excited for tonight's game.

I think Lambert will start tonight, you don't start picking teams for games that havent come yet - as NA always says the focus is on this game and not on Saturday.

Start him today, if he makes it through then great, if he is injured then you wouldn't him sat on the bench anyway.

JayRod needs to be patient and takes his chance when it comes, in the meantime we dont change a winning team!

Have a meeting at 4pm which I need to finish so I can get the train down from London.....fingers crossed they dont chat on too long!

14.12.12 is a no lose situation.

If the judge sets the value too high Birch will be forced to liquidise the club with near on immediate effect. What is know as the 'Short Sharp Shock' sentencing.

If he does set it at £2.75m then we get to watch the Few fail to stump up their £1000, infighting over the property developer buying the dump, desperate attempts to get other HNW individuals in and all against the backdrop of falling gates and dropping down the league. Oh yes, and -10. What is know as the 'Death by a Thousand Cuts' sentencing.

It's hard to pick a favourite isn't it?

Have you put money on Norwich being in the top two at the end of the season? Not entirely sure you'll get a return on that. Guessing it may have been a typo though.

Not sure about Hughton under-achieving at Birmingham, I think he did remarkably well considering his whole defence and a lot more besides was sold from under him - good, solid, forward thinking manager everywhere he's been. Let's hope he slips up this season.

Very hard to predict the result tonight. If we play to our best and they don't we could beat them comfortably, but I fear this is going to be a tough game due to the expectation.

All things being well a win, but I wouldn't be totally amazed by either of the other results - on their day Norwich are very resilient and can nick the odd goal.

I expect them to try a smash and grab, defend deep, counter attacking game tonight, which could hurt us unless we take our opportunities.

Mind you, can understand it though, if I had to spend my days aroud that dump, I'd go pale, and probaby become delirious enough to want to kill a wizard or something.
Bob.
We have to survive every other week among the Coffin dwellers, as you rightly called them.
We desperately attempt to breath life into them.
There are about 10 of us undertakers trying but unfortunatey failing to resusitate the majority of the zombies.
It is a thankless task but we still try to make enough noise to at least give the rest of mankind the impression there are still survivors in there.
We will be there again tonight, our voices are at least almost back to normal , that will allow us to drown out the snoring cos it will be way past most of there beddy time.
What really worries me is that most of them are younger than me.

Has anyone got a cattle prod?

Big win tonight.

I expect them to try a smash and grab, defend deep, counter attacking game tonight, which could hurt us unless we take our opportunities.
saintkenny typo? You jest
lol.

Tbf I think he meant Brum were predicting to be top two before we stuffed them 4-0.

Oh dear. Spot of bad news for the skunts.

That keeper they loaned last week who played a blinder nicking them a point at Coventry, the one they all said was destined to be a Pompey Great, well Oldham have recalled him following a straight red for their No1 last night.

Unfortunately three weeks will take it beyond 14.12.12 so they will never know!

We conceded a lot of goals early season and although Kelvin wasn't really to blame for any of them he lost his place. Now i don't really have a problem with this as long as the replacement doesn't do any worse! Although Gazza has superior distribution and catching he has conceded some shocking goals and been very lucky on a few occasions. We now have a settled back 4 so I say it's time to bring Kelv back. Gazza is only young and he's time will come.
