Defensive improvements need to continue - Adkins
11:20am Wednesday 28th November 2012 in Saints News
NIGEL ADKINS
Southampton manager Nigel Adkins knows his team can score goals and is more concerned with whether the south coast side can build on their first clean sheet of the season when they face Norwich tonight.
Saints have found goals easy to come by since ending a seven-year top-flight exile, with their struggles instead coming at the other end.
They endured a record-breaking bad start defensively and conceded 28 goals in their opening 10 matches.
However, their backline has vastly improved in recent weeks and they collected their first league shutout when they beat Newcastle on Sunday.
"We've had 13 different goalscorers this season so we've got goals throughout the team, but the important thing for us is can we build on the clean sheet from the last game against Newcastle," Adkins said.
"We had a steady and stable back four and goalkeeper which is something we haven't had since the start of the campaign due to injuries, and the players are all working very hard as a team together.
"The players are working very hard on the training ground and what we've got is a group of players who are getting the just rewards for putting the work in home and away.
"We've accustomed ourselves very quickly the demands of the Premier League.
"We talk about lessons learned throughout the campaign and the players are working very, very hard to improve.
"There's a forward momentum about ourselves, and a growing belief about everybody.
"Sunday's performance was really good. We've got Gaston Ramirez, Adam Lallana, and Jason Puncheon with Rickie Lambert, and there was a good solid base behind them as a platform for some great attacking football that got the supporters off their feet at the weekend."
Top scorer Lambert has overcome a knock and should feature tonight against former Rochdale team-mate Grant Holt.
Lambert came off in the 2-0 defeat of Newcastle due to the leg complaint, but trained yesterday and should be involved against the Canaries.
However, the game could come too soon for Danny Fox after missing Sunday with a knee complaint, while Frazer Richardson and Richard Chaplow are also expect to remain sidelined.

Rickie was born in Liverpool and supported them. He will want to play on Saturday for sure. We spent £7m on Jay Rod, it's time to step up. Rickie was £1m.

I cant make it but will try and find a way to watch it. We need the fans to be very very vocal for the whole of the game. It was great sat in the Chapel on SUNDAY with my gordie mate and hear the noise coming from three sides of the stadium. The coffin dwellers were i was did a least clap but how ever hard i tried they would'nt sing. When i'm sat in my S T seat in the Itchen you dont get the same sound effect.
Three points tonight lets get out of the bottom three and start moving up this league. We should fear no one, we are good enough to get to halfway at least.

We need everything we've got tonight from the off in my opinion and, besides, Rickie will be particularly fired up in trying to outscore Holt tonight.
Nigel knows what he's doing and whatever he decides I'm sure will be for the right reasons - he sees them in training so will know if Rickie is struggling, but personally I think he'll be raring to go tonight, as all of them will.

I think that the frenetic pace on the pitch is encouraged by the frenetic loud encouragement from all four sides, well three and a half sides anyway.
Saints proved that they are premier standard. They understand you don't take a breather during play and they are fit enough to manage the responsibility.
Respect for other teams is fine yet with a team such as this they need to display their own abundant skills. There is no need to be intimidated by any one in this division.
Come on you Saints, excited for tonight's game.

If the judge sets the value too high Birch will be forced to liquidise the club with near on immediate effect. What is know as the 'Short Sharp Shock' sentencing.
If he does set it at £2.75m then we get to watch the Few fail to stump up their £1000, infighting over the property developer buying the dump, desperate attempts to get other HNW individuals in and all against the backdrop of falling gates and dropping down the league. Not sure about Hughton under-achieving at Birmingham, I think he did remarkably well considering his whole defence and a lot more besides was sold from under him - good, solid, forward thinking manager everywhere he's been. Let's hope he slips up this season.
Very hard to predict the result tonight. If we play to our best and they don't we could beat them comfortably, but I fear this is going to be a tough game due to the expectation.
All things being well a win, but I wouldn't be totally amazed by either of the other results - on their day Norwich are very resilient and can nick the odd goal.
I expect them to try a smash and grab, defend deep, counter attacking game tonight, which could hurt us unless we take our opportunities.

Not entirely sure you'll get a return on that. Guessing it may have been a typo though.
Tbf I think he meant Brum were predicting to be top two before we stuffed them 4-0.

That keeper they loaned last week who played a blinder nicking them a point at Coventry, the one they all said was destined to be a Pompey Great, well Oldham have recalled him following a straight red for their No1 last night.
Unfortunately three weeks will take it beyond 14.12.12 so they will never know!
