Nigel Adkins said Saints stuck to the game plan at Liverpool – but just couldn’t get a goal to get something out of it.

Daniel Agger’s header two minutes before half time proved to be the difference between the sides but Saints never really created a chance.

“Obviously we’re disappointed in respect that we haven’t got anything from the game,” said Adkins.

“We’ve come away from home on a good run of form of late and I think it’s fair to say that Liverpool’s movement was very good and we couldn’t get a grip of the football.

“We conceded a goal just on half time and if we could have got to half time at 0-0 that would have been really pleasing.

“It was a free header in the penalty area that gave them a 1-0 lead.

“We’ve come away from home and adapted because we’re an attack minded side, we didn’t have anywhere near as much possession of the ball as we normally do and that’s probably credit to Liverpool in that respect.

“We had to adapt our shape to make sure we stayed in the game and play on the counter until the last 10-15 minutes and give ourselves an opportunity to press it and see if we can get something from it.”
