Adkins hails revitalised Puncheon
Saints manager Nigel Adkins praised match winner Jason Puncheon for his maturity after his strike earned the club a valuable victory against Reading.
The midfielder’s fourth goal of the season separated the sides at St Mary’s and capped another impressive performance from the 26-year-old.
Puncheon appeared to be on his way out of Saints a year ago, but resolved differences he had with the club and has now become an integral part of the first-team.
“He’s good, he’s matured, he’s had a good pre-season with us, he’s come back, it’s a fresh start if you like and he’s grasped it with both hands,” said Adkins.
“It just shows how if you work very hard, adapt to the culture you’re surrounded with, and grow and mature – and he’s done that.”
Saints fully deserved their win, and Adkins admitted the margin of victory should have been greater.
“I thought we dominated the game, I thought we were worthy winners,” he said. “The amount of chances we created, we should have put a few more in the back of the net.
“We played a good tempo of football, a variety of attacks and it was a good 1-0 victory for us.”

My disappointment at the time were the others who doubted and the Echo for starting the back stabbing of the manager of their local team.
Sometimes wonder if the Echo realise that there constant barrage of anti Saints propaganda is losing them readership daily.
The main bulk of posters on here are fully behind the team and the others tend to be WUMs who don't even support a football team, but just want to get bites. There have been accusations that the windups are actually Echo employees just trying to start a debate to show to advertisers that there is interest in this site.
Support the Saints.

Also, he did a dribble past three defenders in the first half that was absolutely sublime. He laid it off perfectly to (I think) Lambert.
He certainly doesn't look young - he won't be intimidated and has a nice touch on him.

The whole team now seems to be more sure of themselves and appear to be settled.
This begs the question, do we really need to sign anyone in January?
Would it help or would it disrupt?
We all have said that another centre back would be good, but who of genuine quality is available?
When Adam went off, who took the arm band?

A quality gritty display from us today. Easier to pick out the staing roles from both Punch and Luke than it is to find any criticism of any of our team.

Nige's comments are exactly what was in my mind when I left the ground. Punch has really been our best value player this season, ever since that fabulous goal in the friendly. Sir Rickie seems confused, unsure whether he is supposed to be playing as a goalscorer or in support of the "other" strikers. J-Rod seems a complete waste of money, Burnley must be laughing at how they took us for £7M and I just hope we can offload him in January. Ramirez still does not convince me and I worry about how his high wages may have unsettled other players. And the goalkeeper problems... Punch is the one player who has been absolutely reliable all season, thank goodness Nicola saw sense and ended the feud that kept him out of the side for so long.

I agree Puncheon played well today, along with the rest of the team, but if you want a true MAN of the match, then that title belongs to Guly DePrado. Any one that has to put up with that kind of reception every time he comes on has more courage than those low life so called fans who booed him. No one deserves that, no matter what you think of them. Even Nigel rolled his eyes when he heard that. One thing though, seems like the man shrugged it off, cause he played really well in my opinion.

Good....but bad!
Our reputation is as a free scoring team and we only scored one against a team lower in the table than us.
We also have a reputation as the worst defence, clean sheet today.
Known for fielding the youngest team, average age pushed up by old man Davis.
One of the most polished performances was from the youngest player on the pitch, Shaw.
Followed closely by the other young full back , Clyne.
So far none of the sites have adequately explained the ruling out of the first goal by Punch.
Most of the supporters around me were happy with all the players who turned in another good performance.
Shame about the tw4t who maligns every player and claims to be a Saints supporter.

He battled strongly as well, especially 2nd half keeping Reading pushed back.
Fonte was royally p1ssed off with the crowd reaction to Guly being booed, shrugging and holding his arms out before encouraging the crowd to applaud his entrance, and what a good cameo he gave. Brilliant first touch and passing.
Final thoughts are with the Saints fan, under the Kingsland stand who was receiving chest compressions in an attempt to save his life, as the crowd left.
Don't know if it's been mentioned anywhere else, but I hope he survived!!!!

I thought Spider wasn't as effective as usual, that fifth card hanging over him seems to be affecting his aggression. Shouldn't grumble, it was a good team performance and a much needed win. I am still not sue Rodriguez and Lambert should play together. I don't think Rodriguez was that bead, but I would like to see what Mayuka can do. Our two full backs are class, and the centre backs looked solid today
Puncheon and Clyne linking up down the right is particularly potent threat. Puncheon aside we still look a little shy to shoot however. Lambert's effort in the first half was class.
A titanic battle between Shaw and Roberts. Both played well and kept each other busy. It was good to see Le Fondre have an off day. I still cringe a bit when I think of how he and Reading took us to the cleaners last season.
Unfortunately when he comes on it has a detrimental effect on the crowd. Some boo. Some others tell those that boo to shut up. The singing stops and the murmuring is deafening as everybody discusses.the Guly factor. None of it is his fault really. All he can do is his best when he comes on. He made a positive impact today. Some of the more cynical sorts kept saying, "Who is he?" and "Is that the same Guly". As Dave Merrington said, he gets knocked all the time. When a player deserves it is it so difficult to simply say "He played well".
I hope Lallana is OK. Not a bad time to have a couple of weeks off. Onwards and upwards!!!

Cork was my MOTM and you can see why the defence has improved just by watching how he drops into the full back positions when we lose possession and the full backs have gone forward.
Always good to disagree on MOTM.
Also good to discuss football on a football thread.
Long may it continue.

I blame Guly.
Most of the booing seemed to be coming from the Kingsland. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Whatever anyone thinks, booing a player coming onto the pitch can NEVER help your team to win. Idiots, every one.

To those who are saying Guly was good, yes he was good today but i'm afraid he's had his chances and hasnt delivered, i know he has a great pass ratio but as a striker we really need assists and goals. Im not a guly hater but i don't understand what he's good at?
He's not a great finisher, doesn't have a good long shot, isn't quick and isn't particularly strong or skillful. He's not the future of the club
Also does Atkins have no faith in Mayuka or can he simply not fit him into the team, shame he never brings him on id like to see more of him
Shaw was brilliant and i think Fonte is really starting to look like premier league quality

I call them Portsmouth fans (as above) as I simply don't buy into any football hatred. I know a Man U fan whose life was ruined by hooligans (incidentally wearing Saints colours) and I never, ever join in when the songs are aimed at Portsmouth.
However, I dislike their constant and tediously unfunny posts on here, though I like some of the Portsmouth posters who actually think and try to banter rather than drip feed hate.
Unfortunately, you side with the unfunny idiots (kent, scooter, et al) often enough that I suspect you are one of them. Joining the gang of unpleasant posters from Porstmouth is possibly not the way to be taken seriously (or even seen to be a Saints fan).
I'm sure your response will be abusive but before you do, you might want to consider whether there might be anything true in what I'm saying.

Guly looked fit and up for it today. I do think he is much better playing up front than in midfield. Holds the ball pretty well, very good pass completion and has a touch of class on the ball. Disgraceful booing when he came on. Best fans in the country? I think not.
Rodriguez did better today – worked really hard - but his touch isn’t great and he is too selfish when near to goal.
Shaw is just awesome – period - not just for his age. Early days yet but after Cole and Baines, who is a better English left back at the moment?
Fonte is getting much better as he gets to the pace of the PL and Yashida reads the play so well. But his distribution is poor. Puncheon and Clyne are shaping up as a pretty formidable partnership.
Interesting piece by Jim White in the Telegraph today on how the increase in goals lost by the top teams this season may be linked to full backs struggling to cope with the 4231 formation imported from Spain. With the 3 roaming all over the place, full backs don’t have an obvious person to mark and are sucked up field and in field, leaving space behind them – think Danny Fox and these open swathes that cost us dearly early on in the season. Cork is so good at covering that we get away with it more now and Shaw is simply better than Fox.

The only response to the boos is for the rest of the fans to cheer louder.
I think it's because he's a bit like the French Rugby team.
You never what is going to turn up - a sublime, effortless player like today or just baggage that the rest of the team has to play around
That's kind of frustrating to watch when your team is fighting to get out of the relegation zone. So I'm not surprised some fans have the knives out for him.
I really really hope that he can keep up more performances like today. I said it in another thread and I'll say it here - I'm no Guly fan but today he was superb and another 5 minutes in the game and he would have scored.
As for the rest..... the whole team can be motm for me. Shaw is shaping up wonderfully - a very mature performance today, especially when he wouldn't allow himself to be muscled off the ball.
Davis put in a solid performance but wasn't really given any problem shots to deal with. The movement off the ball by the whole time was brilliant.
I thought the referee was shocking in general -for both teams.

He has instilled a commarardary between Puncheon and Clyne. When one makes a mistake, the other covers. When one takes a risk and does a run, the other covers.
They are friends knowing they are more when they work together.
When Punchon scored the first thing he did was point to his mucker Clyne.
Nigle understands how to get the best out of a previously stroppy Puncheon.
Make him part of a mini team. He may not want to do the best for himself but will never let hs friend Clyne down. Its working time and time again.
Onwards and upwards with this group of players and Nigel getting the best out of them

Guly's reception the one downside, but his excellent performance despite that must have embarrassed any of the boo boys capable of rational thought. Well done Guly - that takes guts.
And to top it all there's only one WUM on here and he seems particularly stupid as a lone looney. Tomorrow morning he should go down to morgue and say "I think I'm ready."

When THEY can get 24k plus regular in League 1, 28k plus in the championship, and like now, 32k easily every week in the Premier, maybe they can take the Michael.
As it is, we've got plenty of fans thanks( unlike the blue few) so we can get a whole thread with loads of people, without needing to cheat..

Great performance.
The only T in the name belongs to Bring back Branfoot, and he/she is not worthy and isn't the Saints manager.
Moreover, if you had been a constant supporter since Guly was signed to Saints, you would know he as delivered on all the counts you suggested he hadn't.
He certainly hasn't looked impressive in previous games this season but has never deserved to be booed as soon as he arrived on the pitch.
Today, whilst on the pitch he did his bit and got very close to scoring.
Most of the posters who come on this forum and have spouted negative postings have either supported the blue few or are new posters this season. Some of these negative posters need to get a grip.
As I've said in the past, we're all just arm chair posters and therefore when it comes to team selection, it's common sense to trust the manager's choice of players since he is the one who sees what the players do, day in and day out,
Saints are moving in the right direction, slowly but surely. Keep supporting them and we can all do our bit. Slagging the team, the manager or individual players serves no positive purpose whatsoever.

Guly may have played well today in the SHORT time he was on but, had he started, i expect it would have been an entirely different story. He's a striker who hasn't scored in a year! and yet amazingly until recently has featured in most games. Imo he isn't prem quality but I'm happy for him to prove me wrong. Booing isn't acceptable though- full stop!!
Fonte seems to get stronger and stronger every game and stepping up which is great to see.
Luke Shaw..... what can you say.... that boy has 100% Premiership quality stamped all over him already!

Making personal references as to whether they may be one of the blue few,new fan, new poster is entirely pointless.
The reason that you have had to read through a load of dross above is that some seem unable to remain impersonal and by inserting these innuendos into your posts is exactly how it all begins.
I don't agree that Guly has delivered on all counts because as a striker, he hasn't scored for a year. (I don't condone booing!)

Great result. Not the best game we have played but nobody played badly. Booing of Guly was a disgrace.Well done to Jose Fonte for trying to get the crowd on his side. Both Nigel and NC have taken a lot of flack on and off ever since they arrived and they have always been proven to be right in the end. If NA sees something we don't in Guly I'm happy to let him prove it to us. Good on them too for kissing and making up with Punch. Morning all, lots of good posts on this thread, BbB did his worst to ruin it for some reason, but I showed great restraint and didn't respond! In the cold light of day and having seen several replays, I came to the conclusion that the Referee was generally OK, but that the Puncheon "goal" being disallowed was a clanger. He may have awarded a penalty for Corks challenge in the first half so I guess that levelled things out.
The booing of one of our own players is becoming embarrassing and disgraceful regardless of how good, bad or indifferent guly is he is pulling on the saints shirt he deserves and needs encouragement.
Bet the same muppets who booed him yesterday were cheering a year ago when he scored both goals to beat middlesborough , go and support the skates cos they need some more supporters we certainly don't want you if you can't support the boys wearing red and White ( pinstripes)

Again, it is hard to pick out individuals when we are obviously a closely-knit team, but Fonte, Clyne, Puncheon & Cork were excellent.
The goal was excellently created & executed, starting with Rickie's slightly delayed ball to Clyne, through the Reading player's legs - exquisite!
Guly's cameo was a fine display, & hopefully his performance & his team mates' reaction will silence the "boo boys".
A great atmosphere again, aside from the Guly haters. Thought the Reading fans were very quiet all afternoon.
It's great to be back in the Prem & seeing our team respond so well to early setbacks & media pressure.
Finally, my thoughts are with whoever collapsed outside the Kingsland after the game - hope you will be okay.

Great performance.
Slagging the team, the manager or individual players serves no positive purpose whatsoever.

im not someone who just accepts everything in blind faith to the club, i think we're doing really well but Guly isn't good enough thats all im saying!

I was one of the posters who said that if he didn't want try with Saints then let him go.
I never disputed his talent, Pardew announced him as likely to be a future hero.
In my opinion, he merely wanted to play in the Prem and didn't really care who for.
I think he may well still be of that mindset, but he plays for us and as long as he is included in the first team he will stay and fight for his place.
He likes the fans singing his praises and he knows that we have welcomed him back.
I just hope no one says into his ear that he could do even better because he may well believe that person and seek greener pastures and I don't think there is any better for him than SFC.
The team nets together really well and he is given licence to play his way here. He has made a realy good partnership with Clyne and that is something that every team needs on both wings.
My personal opinion is that as a team we need to be able to switch him to the left wing as a winger just once in a while and see if we can catch out a defence with a run and cross from the byeline for Jayrod or Ricky to head in from a run to the middle.
Spurs did it in a Europa league game for 30 minutes and they were devastating, then they went back to opposite flanks and wide players cutting in on favoured feet and the supply to the middle stopped and they conceded.
Jose has said that we have the skills to mix it up with short and long. The ability to switch to a winger with Adam and Punch doing crosses for a period would confuse most teams.
Just my opinion of course, a football subject instead of maligning other posters and biting comments.

When most people would bring off players who are not playing at there best & take them off & bring on some fresh legs..
Don't take what im saying the wrong way . I think Adkins is a good manager & should be be here till the end of season for sure . And i would never boo a saints player . even if it makes my hands go in to my face.

These decisions are made in a split second. If the ref sees a melee in the box, unless it is crystal clear, he will restart the game with the ball given to the defending side. Yes?
The Cork foul was very obviously and clearly a foul, no-one to impede the ref's decision, but you got lucky.
These things can even out over a season ie Shotton being sent off yesterday - what carp refereeing for that game. However with Man U conceding only 3 penalties in a decade recently, I do wonder what is going on with the top teams. see Italy
Until we get action replays - which amazingly Platini doesn't want - there will be inconsistency. Why doesn't Platini want action replays - anything to do with gambling I wonder?

Nigel is slowly bringing things together but like others, I think JR and Gaston are a waste of £19m.
If Saints can get at least 5 or 6 points from the next 4 games and then buy and sell wisely in the January sales, Saints should be able to secure their place in the PL.

I have only been here for up to 2 months. I also had never been on before.
I now understand the whole thing a lot more.
One thing that is blindingly obvious
, is that people from this site (ES) going on the News Site (NS) is generally acceptable.
If I said on the NS that I was going, or had just been onto the ES, lots of posters (not all) would slag me off. This is the reason why you don't find Pompey fans using the same name here.
Also, a lot of you guys are stating that this site is now a joke. Great, you now understand what the NS site has been like for 2 1/2 years or so.
This period has coincided with the lowest ebb in our club's history. I guess you can imagine then why some Pompey fans are now on here.
To the genuine fans here, sorry but as I have said before, you need to moderate your own and not condone the awayday WUM's on our site.
Witness Seed the other day, attacking a normal poster for mentioning that some fans were like "Stepford wives". He also called one of your own posters acunt when I first came on here. I was actually surprised at that, but it went by without comment. On the NS, a similar poster would be withdrawn by the Mod.
Say what you like about the NS - but we don't have people who dominate the site. We do have more posters who are up fo a bundle - I admit,
So, your own WUM's have brought back loads of Pompey posters here. Then you orchestrate a Shushh campaign, I wonder who started that? Again all the normal posters just go along with it. You just would not get this pack mentality on the NS.
When I first came on - I posted some drivel poems. This was in response to Seed who had being doing the same for months. I did it for 3 days. There was a point and I made it at the time.
I also got attacked by village Bob who was just anal to be honest with you. I have taken the pee out of Bob ever since, with the wider agenda being that this is generally the mode of attack by Red WUM's on the NS. He has since cleared up his act and his grammar - respect.
Circa 66. The same. A massive onslaught. Bygones be bygones if you fancy it? Yes Bobby played in the top league, I also told you I met him, and he was a nice guy
Indeed I do like banter. but when the Red WUM's try to disrupt us from buying the club, that is warfare, and my feeling is that the Blues who are on here feel the same. Please don't deny this is happening - just be honest! It's not just one poster, and it has been for a duration.
I can be reasonable, but you need to stop the condoning behaviour on this site. When people say they haven't been on our site for months, and we know they have under different logons, we have to tell you.
What I also find difficult to understand, is that the multi logons are just so obvious, we have told you generally who they are (with a few mistakes), but again - nothing is stated by the normal posters.
What I do like about this site, is that you can discuss quite bizarre things on here. The NS doesn't do bizarre to the same scale.
There are also a lot of cool posters on here. Why wouldn't there be?
I don't mind a truce of sensibleness, but could your WUM's stick to it. As I say, we have loads more than you do here.

Not on here much for obvious reasons as you have to scroll through so much to find the real thread. Enjoyed the match yesterday, though wish we would put the chances away. Looked back to ourselves (possibly because of opposition, but mainly because confidence is back. Luke Shaw looks brilliant and so young (Buttner anyone). Pucheon is like a new player, but everyone played well. Good to see SKD back...wouldn't want his career here to finish on a low point. Nigel is slowly bringing things together but like others, I think JR and Gaston are a waste of £19m.
If Saints can get at least 5 or 6 points from the next 4 games and then buy and sell wisely in the January sales, Saints should be able to secure their place in the PL.

I mentioned Stephen Milligan yesterday, and certain rumours. No-one bit. Maybe your town is slightly embarrased by the whole thing, but it looks like he was made to look a bit fruity, and may have been bumped. This guy was Known to speak his mind, and had loads of girlfriends. Any inside information from your end of the M27?
However, as I said yesterday (might have been the day before), I was given definitive information via a friend from a very senior policeman which was that senior MP's were present at his house at the time of his death. The recent rumours, and stories are somewhat confirming this.

It was reported shortly before his death that he had started work on a controversial book about the Royal Family. The text of the book has never been released, and there were various discrepancies and strange events connected to his death that were reported at the time but have never been fully explained - such as journalists being followed to his house by unmarked cars. He was infamous for writing letters to newspapers which poured scorn on the Official Secrets Act; his books, such as The Intelligence Game, cast doubt on the official version of events. Just before his death, he unearthed Britain's code-cracking secrets, in particular the story that the British had cracked Japanese naval codes in advance of the attack on Pearl Harbour.

Re his sexuality, I only know that he was linked for a time with Caroline Spelman and I was told it may have ended because. well, he may have been more attracted to guys. The only certainty seems to be that there were certain uncertainties .....
When I heard about his death - and the 'official' accounts that it was an accidetally self-influicted death caused by a solo sexual act involving autoasphyxiation - I was both saddened and suspicious.
MG, I had never heard of this website, nor of the Fashanu link and I don't have any 'inside info' but I have remained suspicious to this day. So, if the truth ever came out, and if that truth showed Stephen in a better light than history currently remembers him, then it would IMO be a good day for justice.

Like I say, I was told years ago about a certain MP being there at his death, and being told to clear off by the Police.
It was only until recently with all the Saville stuff coming out, people are now starting to ask more questions about Politicians, and with a tiny bit of googling, the story is there.
The website shown is just one, just google his name, the footballer, and you will find the others names easily. Like I say it all slotted into place with what I had been told. My source wasn't a taxi driver BTW, it was a relative of the Policeman.
I used to shag the PA of the Party Leader (did her in his office once) and she told me a number of stories the police had brought to her bosses attention. All were of a sexual nature but not of criminal activity. That is why Portillo didn't become leader.
The trouble is the public want squeaky clean politicians who are normal family people. However, normal family people wouldn't stand to be an MP. Therefore they have to lie.

SM may have been asked to intervene, but there was also a bigger picture going on with his book, and other stuff. The required intervention may have been the establishment asking him to back off, and toe the line, He obviously didn't, which is why I was after some background info on him.
Politicians are controlled via their deviancy. It's how it has always been.
