PLANNING applications will go in for Broomhills shortly.

The information days in November were hosted by those in charge of the project, a brave move in view of the controversy. Thanks for that.

However well the site might be designed there is a major problem with access.

Talk has gone on about traffic lights, roundabouts and turning left only – the latter only possible if there is a central road barrier and even then traffic will divert through Skilling, but there is no doubt that a roundabout is needed at Miles Cross – regardless.

On average throughout the year there were 450 vehicles per day using South Street – almost 170,000 per year.

The A35 could have a projected 450 vehicles a day going in, 450 vehicles a day coming out, via traffic lights.

This, it is maintained, is going to make no appreciable difference to the traffic flow along the A35.

These are average figures. What about peak times?

More importantly has all the local growth information available from the Local Plan been added into the equation, like Vearse Farm which has an application for 650 homes or more in the pipeline?

Where will they get rid of rubbish? Broomhills!

While there is no argument that a new waste site is required, this version has been shoe-horned into an unsuitable location.

There is not space for extra traffic lanes or an underpass and left turns, traffic lights will do nothing to keep the traffic flowing.

If there is an incident at Miles Cross or Chideock, what then?

What about Bank Holidays when the road is already backed up?

With the expected growth for Bridport over the next few years it must be anticipated that the number of vehicles using the site will increase rapidly, causing major A35 congestion.
