Lambert: Saints can end Stoke home run

Rickie Lambert takes on Fulham Rickie Lambert takes on Fulham

Rickie Lambert is confident that Saints can end Stoke’s remarkable unbeaten home run when they visit the Britannia Stadium tomorrow.

Tony Pulis’ side have not lost a Premier League match on their own turf since February, and have conceded just four goals in their nine games there this season.

That defensive record is the best in English professional football, and one of the most impressive in Europe.

No side across the top divisions in countries such as Spain, Italy, Germany, France and Holland can even match it.

In Britain, Scottish duo Rangers and Queen of the South are the only teams who boast a better record.

With that in mind, Lambert insists Saints are under no illusions about how difficult it will be to win at Stoke, but he believes the confidence gained from the 1-1 Boxing Day draw at Fulham can spur them on to a result.

It's a tough ask, but if we can get something from this game...we can go into the Arsenal game with confidence and gain some revenge for the pasting we got at the Emirates.
We are a better team now... we can do it COYR

The difference between a win, draw or loss can be one moment of skill or luck. If we carry on keeping our goals against down, we give ourselves a chance in any game. The loss v Sunderland was the blow that puts pressure on us to in, but a draw would be a decent result against Stoke.

Can't see it not on saints present form I think we will be luck to get a drew. I would love to see us get the next 6 points on the board but I thin I am deaming , the best would be 2 drews.
But I would be hapy with this today the we should have won were Sunderland and Fulham but we ust did not turnup di we and as for the our 12millon pound star he is not shining for me at present very patchy till COYR's do it for us

As much as I rate Gazza, I hope NA sticks with Kelvin for this game. I think he is better equipped to deal with a very physical Stoke side.

Rickie is right, we could beat Stoke, whether we will or not, is another matter, depends as always, on so many things, having scored at Fulham I reckon his confidence will be higher, but the rest of the team have to provide a service for him to capitalise, feed the Lamb and he will score. COYRs.

Can should read WILL, however we are to fragile I fear...

Funny what football can do to a community, our litlle Painted Wagon crew went to Stoke in 1984 the old Victoria ground....they had no support, no volume, we were in there end!

Yet they fill the ground every week and it is one hell of a noisy place...

At the risk of incurring the wrath of my fellow Saints think on this...

...back in the late 70's and 80's until seating destroyed our capacity at the Dell our mean average gates were far bigger than the Stokes, Norwiches, Leicester's, and so on..indeed other that their big games Newcastle, Chelsea, Villa, Everton were not much bigger than us, in short only our limited capacity kept our overall average down....

Today I see clubs like Norwich and Stoke filling their ground to capacity every week with double their 70's and 80's numbers.....Lowe built the new ground too small BUT I still feel that in spite of everything and with the massive growth in attendances throughout ALL leagues we are of the pace.....opinions please.

We should have built a 40k stadium to start with -- the expansion option is part of the design, but it's still costly to carry it out.

We wouldn't get 40 every week, perhaps, but with more aggressive pricing we would get close. And we would pack it out for bigger games.

For this weekend I predict a hard fought, bloodied draw. It will be too much for gazza, so I agree with sticking with kelv for this one. He know how to handle getting roughed up.

I think 32,600 is probably about right for the next two seasons in the PL. Once we have re-established ourselves as a top 8 side the amount of fans wanting to watch the Saints will swell and out weigh the capacity. We should then increase the capacity by 8,000 to 40,600 and then a further 8,000 within a couple of seasons to 48,600 when we are breaking into the top six and winning a trophy or two and playing European football.
I think 48,000 each week will be enough for the following 5 years or so.
When we are playing Champions League football regularly I feel it will be time to move to a band new 60,000 stadium that will be the football mecca of the South Coast and we will continue to attract fans from catchment areas across the South and further afield.
St Marys could be sold to Eastleigh and Totton to ground share who by then will be in the same league as the skunts and get home gates of 20,000 plus in League 2 when Saints are playing away.
I got a crystal ball for Christmas and that's what I'm seeing.....:o)

I think the years of only having 15k capacity cost us a generation of supporters. Dad didn't take son.

I bought a business in Newcastle a few weeks back. Do you know the population is less than Southampton? Ok add in Gateshead and its bigger. You never meet anyone from Newcastle who supports another team, some might not go to the games but they all support the Toons. I bought a business in Portsmouth last year, only 3 of their staff supported the skates.

You never meet anyone from Newcastle who supports another team, some might not go to the games but they all support the Toons. I bought a business in Portsmouth last year, only 3 of their staff supported the skates.
That many...wow that's a surprise. Have they pledged?
No they haven't pledged and think the PST is a joke and in it for themselves. Saved me the job of persuading them!

You off to Stoke? Persuaded Bill yesterday and ordered tickets, didn't realise they're invincible at home :(
Can't make it. Need to catch up on some works paperwork :o(

Actually. I would say your lot have got a chance of maybe a point. The reason being that Stoke have 2 of their defenders missing - Shawcross and Cameron.

I am actually amazed that the journalist hasn't mentioned this especially as Shawcross has been one of the defenders of the season. It seems your journo's are on the same level as the News ones - not up to the mark.

Look, Rebuild it now up to 40k at that location, move Toys R Us to the St Marys location - the kids will love a riverside area, maybe build a new restaurant there - the company would make an absolute killing.

Just need to rename the new stadium. I suggest..... Trophy R Us.

Thr Toys R Us site is a non starter, in my opinion, the traffic in the area is already seriously bad and will be even worse shortly if current plans come to fruition, and Parking would an expensive nightmare, the only thing going for it is the location of the Railway Station and few want to use it, too lazy to get out of their cars. Stoneham as a site was feasible, but the original Stadium was too small. You could never get the assorted Councils to agree to it anyway.

I don't want to see us keep passing the ball around at the back, we put ourselves under enough pressure against teams that don't press.
The way the Stoke players work and press the oppositions defense we could be in all sorts of bother.
I think it should be horses for courses, get the ball forward quicker, shoot sooner if the opportunity is there and work as hard as them.
I'm not saying this is the way to play every game, but against Stoke we should play them at their own game.

I think the theory goes, that if we have the ball and are passing it around ourselves, the opposition haven't got it to do any damage. This theory is flawed if we keep giving the ball away in critical areas, it may be OK when you have a few goals in the bag, but doing it when only 1 up is normally a sucide pact. We are not good enough at times to keep possession, so other tactics should be used.

Will NA stcik with the ame side as against Fulham or will he make changes?

I'd like to see Spider rested and JWP brought in. Would like to see how he pairs with Cork.

I think Fox will start if fit and Shaw rested (he's only 17) as he should start against Arsenal.

Its going to be a hard game and anoter one where, I understand, the weather conditins are goig to be bad.

The new ground should have gone where Toys-r-us is.
Look, Rebuild it now up to 40k at that location, move Toys R Us to the St Marys location - the kids will love a riverside area, maybe build a new restaurant there - the company would make an absolute killing.

Just need to rename the new stadium. I suggest..... Trophy R Us.

It's certainly got a certain something I feel.
Some one suggested the Ford factory site a few weeks back. Pie in the sky...but it would be perfect.

I didn't say you were a skunt and have posted my optimistic but positive opinion about where I would like Saints to be in a few years time.
It was meant as a tongue in cheek comment and could yet be possible as none of us can really see into the future.
I haven't really got a crystal ball and
I don't recall aiming my post directly to you so I don't really appreciate your insults or see why what I Say actually concerns you.
The fact that you are obviously not a Saints makes me wonder why you feel the need to reply to my post in the way you have as it has fcuk all to do with you what I think and what Saints are doing or where they will hopefully be in a few years time.
On that note I would suggest you keep your comments to yourself as you are obviously limited in intelligence and basically full of sh1t.
So jog on and comment on your own clubs site whoever that may be and try to be a bit more polite.

Good expansive business thinking Sheila. There is one big issue that you haven't considered though.

Obviously what with all the tourism, there could be a few visitors, but we have "quality" yobs in Pompey that may decide to make a visual and structural impact on your premises thereby eating into your potential profits, I would suggest Fareham instead as your first point of encroachment.

The only problem is the targeted audeience. See, the only people to truly see the funny side would be stripeys. It's just like Seeds - err J7's stadium comments earlier. In two seasons you will be an established top 8 premier league side?
in two years time you will be lucky to be in the premier league..

on what evidence?
So in 4 years time you will be in the top 6, have won an couple of trophies and attracting 48k, and then up to 60k.....

strange people here today....you need to be realistic.....

Seed, in 1975 I was placed with foster parents in pmuff for a short placement, winner coming from Southampton and yet everyone supported Chelsea or Mufco...pmuff used to get 9 to 11k gates...

Still thats their more recent history and we do not discuss that.

Some one suggested the Ford factory site a few weeks back. Pie in the sky...but it would be perfect.
Great location actually. I think as a mark of respect to Ford you should name it after one of their models, maybe you could get Ford sponsorship as well.

I suggest the Ford Escape Stadium - named after all those years in the top flight escaping relegation.
As opposed to say the pfc in 'transit' again model!

It has indeed Gloria and it should coincide with the redeveloping and renaming of Fratton Park to Saints Megastore (Portsmouth branch) I suggest you book yourself a parking spot in advance. Its bound to be packed (O, there's a novelty!) HAHA STID

I have considered the big issue you mention. You're just not thinking ahead Gloria. When we reach the development stage, most of the blue few will have turned into deck chairs and only 1 quality yob will remain (Maybe Westwood can go in a museum somewhere!)
Profits will be tight as we know that people in that area like to say they will buy something and then don't but as success grows so will profits and hopefully bring some much needed tourism and business to a run down area. Fareham being bigger would be the next target!
We like to look after our neighbours!! HAHA

NA has to decide pretty **** fast on who will be his number one keeper.
KD is not working out at this level, and Gazza is still inexperienced and both have and will cost us more points.

The current back 4 have worked super hard in recent weeks and to have all that progress ruined by a too many GK blunders is a surefire way to stay in the bottom 4.

I think it has to be Gazza tomorrow, time IS up for KD.

Sorry to say....but I agree. I'm hoping that Gazza can step up to the level required. Otherwise, we'll be out buying yet another keeper in January. I don't think that was in the original plan.

I say Gazza too, not because he is a better GK, but that extra height and reach will be useful.

Why not Give boruc another go ? Whereas Stoke don't concede many goals they aren't exactly the most prolific of scorers so a draw would be a good result , it will be physical tin hats job but we are not playing Barcelona
