1. A new goalkeeper. Kelvin is getting to inconsistent and old, Paulo is also inconsistent and inexperienced, and Boruc is not good enough for Southampton. Kelvin or Paulo are not good enough on the bench so we need a new first team goalkeeper and a new keeper for the bench
2. A new central defender. Fonte is good enough, but Yoshida and Hooiveld make too many mistakes. Either are good enough for the bench but not to start.
3. A new left-back. Luke is great but too young and he may burn out as he is so inexperienced. Fox is not good enough to start but perhaps for the bench. Richardson is a good reserve but not for the bench or the first team.
4. A new winger. We have two good wingers, Lallana and Puncheon but we need Ramirez as central attacking midfield and if he gets injured then Lallana can move in the centre position, but Guly is not really good enough for starting there, neither is De Ridder, and Mayuka is too inexperienced.
5. A new striker. Rickie is very good at scoring and heading, but he has no pace. Rodriguez has good pace but isn't as good at scoring or heading. Mayuka is too inexperienced at the moment, Ramirez needs to play in central attacking midfield for us to do well. Guly is said to be a striker but I don't think is good enough as a striker and barely good enough as a winger. We need a striker who has good scoring ability, heading, spot kicks and pace.
This should be our starting 11 from the beginning of February:

I've no doubt he's on the radar of a number of clubs. Personally I think he's better off staying at Saints where he has a greater chance of playing first team football!
Love the way our players are so cheap to buy!! The only one there with any possible truth to it would be Luke Shaw to Arsenal, not that I want him to go especially for such a low fee.
In the summer there were reports in the Mail and Telegraph concerning Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea coming in for Calum Chambers who although a first team squad member hasn't featured at all post pre season and now trains exclusively with the under 21s!!!!
These papers are always keen to print what agents tell them. Total waste of time!!!!!

I think they should both go to Championship sides to get experience as having experience at this level with their lack of experience could be a deterrent and could affect their playing and their attitudes. Jake Sinclair and Callum Chambers should join them on loan.

The future looks bright, Sinclair, Hoskins, JWP, Shaw, Rodrigues, Ramirez, Schneiderlin to name a few.
.
It is the present that worries me, we need to get Friedel in - think how many points we would have now. Trouble is with Cudicinin going to LA, we may have missed the boat.

Goalkeeper? I'd still go with Gazza and let him gain some experience.
The defence is far more solid as Yoshida and Fonte seem to have developed an understanding. Jos is good cover but is prone to mistakes due to lack of pace.
I think we have the makings of a decent side - but we do lack something.
However when we play the best team which includes Lallana, and everyone is on the top of their game - there isn't that much wrong with the side.
Having Cork back has made a significant difference to the overall team - it's a matter of getting better than we already have...by that I mean who in our team would be a first choice in any top 6-side?
There's something to make you think about targets!

Since the squad has worked out its defensive problems and the results have firmed up there is less need for any massive outlay. In any event I don't think the owners will release a lot more money. They are not flamboyant Russian billionaires who want to be part of the "smart set".. they are a massive family concern who have put control in the hands of Cortese. Since Marcus died I dont think any of them have been seen. If they have then it has been very discreet. I admire that as it shows they believe the club is a good investment. Prudence will be far more evident than extravagance
We certainly wont be shelling out for new goalkeepers. Nige will make use of what he's got already.
I do not expect anything other than a few old names to moving on while they can still command a fee and some general tidying up.
Maybe we will step in for additional Centre Back squad support but I don't expect any earth shaking news.
We haven't seen anything of Tad Lee this season. Thats a pity as he's a permanent fixture in the Saints shop window in West Quay. We haven't seen much of Mayuka either so there's potential still to be explored in the squad.
I very much doubt that much will be spent.
If however Nigel and Nicola want to surprise me then great.
In the meantime these threads will chug along fuelled by imagination, speculation, rumour and occasional outright lies.

Whoever we get in , we need to act fast!!! There is too much at stake to stay in the Premier league this year and a lot of teams will be taking a risks (financially) to remain in the big league. Defending as a whole has been woeful this year so most will be looking for defenders so it’s important that we don’t miss out. Obviously it can also be dangerous to buy the first thing you see but Nicola and Nig certainly need to get their heads down….
Whoever we get in, be it 2, 3 or more, they need to have Premier League experience, none of these 'never heard ofs' from the lower leagues or abroad. The season has been tough enough so far and it won't get any easier, so previous experience is a must and they can hopefully hit the ground running. My only concern, as well as availability, is attracting the players we need, considering the position we are in.

Some news coming from the Italian Newspapers today regarding Cagliari and Saints. The Italian Club is having Financial problems at the moment and are looking to sell 3 of there main Players. 2 of which have already had offers from Saints. The most obvious one is Astori, who apparently will have his deal go through in the next week. Yet the other 2 players who have had offers there names have not been released? So wonder who out of that squad it could be. But alot of italian clubs looking to sell in the Jan window to ease there finance woes. Saints have been linked with most of the italian clubs, but reports suggest it is mainly due to Saints financial power and the willigness to spend money in this transfer window. So we might see some bargains, if NC is in talks over there.
Lets hope that we can proffer from the financial troubles there and grab some real quality while the goings good.

Norwegian club Molde have confirmed that they are in talks with an unnamed club over the sale of defensive star Vegard Forren.
The highly-rated 24-year-old defender has been watched closely by a number of Premier League clubs in recent months.
Everton were regarded as favourites after David Moyes personally took in a Molde game, while Manchester United, Newcastle, Fulham and Sunderland are also said to have an interest.
Now Molde's boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Forren will not be linking up with the Norway national squad this month as he is in talks to leave the club.
"Vegard is not travelling to the National Team camp because we are in the final stages of negotiations with another club," Solskjaer told Romsdals Budstikke.
"It's possible that Vegard will go for a medical check-up and negotiate his personal contract."

When you really have a good look at this list it just lacks credibility !! Take a good look at it and just think to your self REALLY ?? It's like the one last summer when Del Pierro suddenly appeared on the list before disappearing to some sheep shearing station in the southern hemisphere.
I cannot take any list seriously that doesn't have Alicescat on it . .black, athletic, ball playing natural hunter .. for heavens sake he has as much right to be on this list as some of the names I'm seeing.

Saints need a handful of new players to make sure of our survival. We need:
Formation: 4 - 2 - 3 - 1
GK: Asmir Begovic
CB: Jose Fonte
CB: Ryan Shawcross
LB: Jan Vertonhogen
RB: Nat Clyne
CM: Jack Cork
CM: Morgan Schneiderlin
LAM: Adam Lallana
RAM: Jason Puncheon
CAM: Gaston Ramirez
ST: Bryan Ruiz
Subs:
GK: Simon Mignolet
DF: Jos Hooiveld
DF: Sam Ricketts
MF: Steven Davis
MF: Steve Sidwell
ST: Tadanari Lee
ST: Rickie Lambert
Joining Saints:
Asmir Begovic
Ryan Shawcross
Jan Vertonhogen
Bryan Ruiz
Simon Mignolet
Sam Ricketts
Steve Sidwell
Leaving Saints:
Richard Chaplow
Billy Sharp
Emmanuel Mayuka (Loan)
Aaron Martin
Artur Boruc
however to annoy Pogle (skate, 141?) our existing players could step up the play and not change their style because of pressure or adversity..

Rumours from norway: Saints in for Vegard Forren, Norway International, playing for Molde in Norway. Been scouted by Everton, linked to fulham/newcastle. And now he's going over to Liverpool, who have a bid accepted by Molde, around the 4 mill pound mark. As far as Foreign Players since 92' to today there has been a total of 1,400 playing in the UK, Mostly in the Prem. e.g. Chelsea 104. Man.City 96. Arsenal 94. Liverpool 91. West Ham 89. Bolton/Fulham 88. and Saints 47.
My point is I cannot see it ever being a problem with the 1st 7 clubs.
Espanyol and other Spanish Clubs have some fine Players and if MP returns for some of them thats fine by me.tabbed by the media as interested in the huge list of platers published is flattering to say the least!
My first game at the old Dell was in 1947 aged 7Not as long as good old Percy Purkiss at 107 years old and being a Saints fans for 100 years, good on you Percy.

COYRLol... Bugger! Best brush up on my Spanish!!!

Abbi your post must be one of the most pointless posts yet - No basis to it at all. MP has said he's not had time to consider his targets yet and Villa oh come on there are rumours and then stupidity Villa from Barcelona yeah right
It's all good fun, enjoy it.
Thanks for the post abbiscuits, saves me trawling around for rumours anyway.

Not exactly a goalgetter, to get on instead of the top English goalscorer in the PL...Ricky Lambert. We're probably just be getting a few new names in.
Saints need a handful of new players to make sure of our survival. We need:
Formation: 4 - 2 - 3 - 1
GK: Asmir Begovic
CB: Jose Fonte
CB: Ryan Shawcross
LB: Jan Vertonhogen
RB: Nat Clyne
CM: Jack Cork
CM: Morgan Schneiderlin
LAM: Adam Lallana
RAM: Jason Puncheon
CAM: Gaston Ramirez
ST: Bryan Ruiz
Subs:
GK: Simon Mignolet
DF: Jos Hooiveld
DF: Sam Ricketts
MF: Steven Davis
MF: Steve Sidwell
ST: Tadanari Lee
ST: Rickie Lambert
Joining Saints:
Asmir Begovic
Ryan Shawcross
Jan Vertonhogen
Bryan Ruiz
Simon Mignolet
Sam Ricketts
Steve Sidwell
Leaving Saints:
Richard Chaplow
Billy Sharp
Emmanuel Mayuka (Loan)
Aaron Martin
Artur Boruc
