Adkins pride at Chamberlain development

Daily Echo: Alex Chamberlain Alex Chamberlain

Saints manager Nigel Adkins is proud of the way Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is developing but warned the winger that he and his Arsenal team-mates face a tough test at St Mary's tomorrow.

The 19-year-old is a graduate of the south coast club's fabled academy system, following in the footsteps of players like Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott.

Oxlade-Chamberlain made his name under the tutorship of Adkins, helping Saints secure automatic promotion from npower League One in 2011.

Much has changed since the winger's £15million move to north London, with the teenager now an England international and Southampton once again back in the top flight.

Oxlade-Chamberlain makes his first return to St Mary's tomorrow and Adkins is proud of the winger.

"I think he will get a fantastic reception," the Saints boss said. "He is one of the players that came through out system.

"We are excited watching him played. We'd love him to still be at Southampton, but he is an Arsenal player now and an England international.

"I went to watch him against Reading the other night and he was exhilarating, with his acceleration to go away, a desire to get on the football. He is a joy to watch.

"I think everybody at Southampton is proud of what he is doing now.

"Everybody at the football club has had a role and a responsibility to play in Alex's development, but it is down to him as well. He is an exciting young talent."

Walcott is another former Saints academy graduate due to return to his former home tomorrow.

Both featured for the Gunners in September when they ran riot against the newly-promoted side, beating them 6-1.

Saints may be in the bottom three heading into tomorrow's game, but they are a different proposition now due to a new-found sturdiness and confidence, "We have improved and grown in maturity all the way through," Adkins said.

"Obviously we had a baptism of fire coming into the Barclays Premier League when you look at the fixtures we had at the start of the campaign.

"We have only lost two of the last nine games, which is important and both of them were narrow 1-0 defeats.

"I think we have got a group of players that have become more accustomed to the level that we are at.

"At Arsenal we did all right for the first half an hour and then Jos Hooiveld got injured and I had to bring Maya Yoshida on for this debut.

"He had only had one day's training with us and for 15 minutes Arsenal gave us a good doing, but we have improved.

"We have grown in maturity and we are looking forward to the next run of fixtures we've got."

AOC is fulfilling his potential and whilst I really enjoy seeing him play better each week, he will have an off day tomorrow.. We are a different team to when we played them earlier in the season, and as long as we keep tight, keep the ball and stay in their faces we should get a result.

The goalkeeping situation is a real worry.

You have to be at the games to get the full appreciation.

The Fulham goal and Kelvin made fans despair at the howler.

The second goal from Stoke and the parrying of the ball in extra time into the danger area by Kelvin was not good enough. All that time before the game catching the ball - simple little shots - what does that achieve ??

Kelvin is not good enough for the Premiership.

The issue with the last 20 mins is a relevant one. The Players have good fitness and conditioning (and if not why not ? )

Subs against Manure were our undoing.

Over to Nigel - he gets paid an awful lot of money to make decisions.

WE OWE ARSENAL. COYR.

By the way, are the DE making a late entry in the 2012 awards for the most articles posted online on one day about a football club?

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a great player, I remember being there at his first game for the club and the game of his first goal for the club, 2-1 at home to Oldham in League One. We have gone 1-0 up before being pegged back to 1-1, before he scored a fantastic goal to win it for the Saints. It is good to see him doing well, sadly it is not for Saints but it is good to see him going from League One to the European Championships in the space of a year and a bit. Hopefully we can contain him on Tuesday!

I have re-read what I posted, what did I say that upset you and isn't realistic? It is only my opinion, it doesn't count for much, I am no big deal, have never claimed to be anything other than a 100% Saints supporter, what is there about that you can't understand. If you disagree with what I said fair enough but I don't expect abuse from a fellow Saint, even kent only humours me, and I taunt the hell out of him, but only in jest. They are just words they can't harm normal people. Saints should make it hard for Arsenal tomorrow, I agree with you, wouldn't be any point going to watch them if they were to capitulate without a fight, and no Nigel Adkins side are likely to do that. That is my current opinion, which can change at a drop of a hat. Happy New Year, I'll try not to upset you in 2013 but I can't guarantee it.

I don't like a Team to be gripped with fear before we start a game of football.

I don't like to read that when we went to Liverpool and the team could'nt play due to being in awe of the place.
