Who faces the exit door at Saints?

THERE are several obvious candidates for the exit door if Saints are aiming to trim their squad during the current transfer window.

While most of the talk revolves around which players the club could sign, this month is also a chance to either sell or loan out those who are currently out of favour at St Mary’s.

As revealed in the Daily Echo last month, several players are out of contract in the summer.

Jason Puncheon, now free to talk to foreign clubs if any were interested, is the only one currently in the first team picture who is seeking a new deal.

Others include Danny Butterfield, Frazer Richardson, right, Richard Chaplow, Ryan Dickson, Danny Seaborne and Tommy Forecast.

In addition, strikers Lee Barnard and Jonathan Forte are well down the pecking order.

Full backs Butterfield and Dickson have yet to appear in the Premier League this season, so appear well out of the frame.

In addition to the above get rid of Hammond , De Ridder and possibly Fox. If Puncheon won't commit then him too. If Fox goes we will need cover and if Punch goes we will need a replacement. Possibly keep Punch till the end of his contract as he is doing well and we must have written him off, transfer fee wise, after his tantrums last year.We have a lot a dead weight at the moment and it may be difficult to offload them as most Championship sides won't be able to afford the wages they are on

Must keep Punch, he is in good form, clear out the no hoper's and straighten the squad with a goalkeeper, as priority an experience centre back as back up and a pacey mid fielder included. The bench looked thin on the ground on Saturday. Where's Lee, need to see him on the bench and get Billy Sharp back.

Going to be difficult to shift some of our squad as promotion to the premier league triggered a decent pay rise for most of them.
They'll probably be content to sit tight or go out on loan until their contracts expire.
Not the ideal situation but most people would do the same.

Definitely keep Sharp. Just imagine if we did go down and we had Lambert J Rod, Sharp and Tadanari Lee up front. We'd scare any Championship side sh-tless. We're not going down though. There are at least 6 sides worse than us in the Prem.

Give puncheon a new deal if he's up for it, but I still think he is determined to move back to London. So if he doesn't want a deal, sell him to qpr!

I think we would regret letting Chaplow go. A shiny headed baldie genius completes a team, like marsden of yesteryear.

Chaplow was on fire (remember the goal against manure in he cup) before a bad injury cos him dearly. He can get back.

Would be a big blow were we to lose Puncheon but if his heart is not in it then send him on his way and get in a decent replacement. The reference to Chaplow as a genius stretches credibility for me; he has undeniable qualities but not enough for the PL, similarly Billy Sharp. (and you have to go all the way back to David Armstrong for true bald headed genius). I thought Tad Lee looked the business on the evidence of 'that goal' against Derby but there were rumours when he first came to the club that he is brittle, injury prone, and struggles with fitness.

Yeah Chappers has been unlucky. He was a decent Prem player when he was at West Brom and he was terrific for us b4 the injury. However he aint gonna get in ahead of Spider and Cork who are both outstanding this season. Like wise Davis is well ahead of him and JWP will be a regular soon as well. Will be a great Championship addition for somebody though. He's a 100% trier and I for one will be sorry to see him go

Can't believe people suggesting that we let Puncheon go if he wants to leave - he's been one of the stars of our season and personally I'd do my best to negotiate while making it clear early on that, under no circumstances, will we let him go this window.

Let's face it, any bid will take advantage of his expiring contract and pale into insignificance compared to the money we'd lose if we go down.

We can't afford to be cutting our noses off to spite our faces - I think he's learned not to sulk now and will do his best for us even if he sees his long-term future elsewhere.

If Punch has been playing for an exit in this window then, he will want to go first and foremost. If NA doesn't let him, then we will see a drop off in performance at least in Jan and part of February and possibly longer. NA needs to man manage him, and find out where he is coming from. It could be that QPR, Spam or Fulham may offer good enough money for NA to get someone of equal staus or better back in.

I do think the media often makes a bit much of the whole contract situation when a player doesn't sign-on immediately.

Sure, something like the Walcott or Lampard thing seems to rumble on for ages with people saying clubs or players are being disloyal, but if I was Walcott, even if I loved the club and wanted to stay, I'd be stupid not to wait and see what other options are on the table before committing.

I'm sure Punch will do the same and then it's up to the club and/or player to decide if any deal suits.

IMO it suits the player and the club to do nothing until after the window is closed - that way we get to see if a deal suits when we know our fate and he gets some extra bargaining power.

If we stay up, we may decide we can get a better replacement in the summer should he decide to go or that we can afford to keep him if he wants to stay.

Sure we take a hit on the fee, but committing to a long-term lucrative contract now could cost us more in the long term anyway if we go down.

Would love to see Tadanari Lee at least come abck to the bench, he is much better than some of the strikers/winegrs Adkins has been fielding.

I'm not sure that a cheap attempt at encouraging fans to turn on existing players is the way forward.

NA can decide who he feels should stay and of those, who wants to stay.

I think Jason will sign as he's now settled and the fans love him - he's been one of our best players this season.

For me I would recall Billy Sharp, he's an out and out goal poacher and will score goals in this league - perhaps we can send Gully out as his replacement. Billy has already scored 8 goals, just imagine if he'd scored half that for us, where would/could be up that table.
