Adkins rules out swoop for keeper
8:10am Friday 4th January 2013 in Saints News
Kelvin Davis
Saints will not sign a new keeper this month, despite the continued uncertainty in the position, according to manager Nigel Adkins.
A fifth goalkeeping change of the Premier League campaign was made this week when Kelvin Davis was dropped in favour of Artur Boruc for the 1-1 draw with Arsenal.
The Polish stopper endured a shaky start to the match, fumbling the ball a couple of times, and slipping over as he made a clearance, but he survived without disaster.
Boruc, Davis and 20-year-old Paulo Gazzaniga have all been handed the number one jersey twice this term in the league, but all three have committed notable errors.
Saints have again been linked with a move for Birmingham’s Jack Butland, who they attempted to sign in the summer, only to have a £6m bid rejected.
Adkins, however, insists there is no need to purchase a keeper this month, declaring Gazzaniga as the man who will fill the position for years to come – even if he is struggling to get on the bench at the moment.
“We have a young goalkeeper in Paulo Gazzaniga, who is going to be the future of this football club,” Adkins said.
“We have two experienced goalkeepers in Kelvin Davis and Artur Boruc.
“They are the three goalkeepers we’ve got now and I do not anticipate another goalkeeper coming in during this window.”
Adkins is still looking to strengthen his squad this month, though, with Cagliari defender Davide Astori among those said to be on the radar.
Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun is the latest to be linked with a switch, although the Israeli international is earning big wages and had an unsuccessful injury-hit loan spell at West Ham in the first half of this season.
“I think you’ve always got to improve,” said Adkins. “You can't stand still. Whatever we’ve done in the past is in the past. We’ve got to keep looking at the future.
“We’ve got to keep moving forward, moving on and everyone has got to keep striving to do that.
“We’ve had our recruitment meeting well before the January window has opened.
“We have a good recruitment department, we have targeted several players, we have had conversations about availability and non-availability.
“I would like to think that during the course of the window a couple of people will be coming in.”

I guess NA doesn't want to upset the harmony by bringing in too many players for the sake of it, especially a GK.
I just hope Boruc can show the form he had at Celtic and not the first 15 mins of the Arsenal game for the rest of the season.
In Nigel we trust.

Boruc was awful for 20 minutes against Arsenal and if he'd conceded 1 or 2 it could have been terminal for his Saints career, it wasn't, unlike Kelvin who, whenever he makes a mistake seems to concede a goal, we have enough talent but need a dominant centre half to relieve the pressure off the keeper to start with.

Not sure that Gazza is the "future of this club" .. one of Nige's less convincing management text book sound bites .. but I remember Kelvin taking major stick after his arrival and now he's a club legend. So I think Gazza deserves his chances and has potential. .we shall see.
I do however think maybe Nigel will be seeking another central defensive signing, but Yosh and Fonte are shaping up as a solid pairing. We just lack depth in the squad for injury cover in those positions. I always said that Fonte needed a mentor to get him ready for the premiership. Not sure what happened there but he has sharpened up his act big time and since Cork came back he has been very solid and his confidence has grown.
Apart from a CB signing I can't see much happening in January. As I said yesterday I think we will see more going through the Out door as the loose ends are tidied up and we recoup some cash for those who could get first team matches in lower leagues.
I would be sad if Tad Lee leaves because I think he has real potential. If he doesnt get a first team chance I can see him leaving.
Mayuka will get some match practice during the African cup competition so we may see him getting a chance when he returns.

Google Artur Borucs friday rage list, hilarious, I think he's a real character a bit like Grobelar.

We'd have a great keeper if Gazza is given Kelvin's experienced brain and Boruc's excellent ball-distributing right arm.
Rickie would benefit greatly from Tadanari's swifter legs and Yoshida from Hooi's longer legs.
Given the worrying recurring knee problem with Adam, we should consider getting him the best knee from one of the younger academy lads.
Any new signings in the meantime should be made with some foresight as to their spare part potential. If we sign two players at £2m each and combine their best parts, we could create a £50m player.
We could also look outside football to create a 'bank' of world class components - eg Olympic runners etc.
However, no club money should be spent on purely cosmetic treatments such as unnecessary peck muscles or larger willies.

How does Nigel tell Nicola that all his other mismatch keeping signings have not quite worked out ....
It makes it look like he did not really know what he was doing at the beginning of the Season.
Lots of Lower League Managers (especially when money is tight) do not see and cannot see the value of a TOP KEEPER.
Hopefully we will get a good Centre Back (that is significantly better that what we have) and squeeze the budget for the Keeper.
NIGEL HAS STILL PLENTY TO LEARN IN THIS LEAGUE and it is an unforgiving place.
I like the Manager- I wish he was more open to reality when it is staring him in the face.
I support the Manager - and in his darkest days at QPR AWAY - I stood shouting his name as he went through the door arriving at the Club with QPR fans all around..... BUT he should never have let it get that far. All those goals conceded .... he must have realised the side needed to be more Defensive.
WELL DONE ON THE MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT.

The trouble with keepers is that if they make a mistake it can lead to a goal, but if a midfielder makes a mistake and passes to the opo there is a chance of getting it back before any damage is done so they don't get singled out so much, however we need to give either of the new keepers a decent run so they gel with the team

Yup, the elephant in the room is the lack of dominance and calming influence dictating the game from the middle of the park.

Being a keeper himself I hope Nigel hasn't got a blind spot for that one, although surely he'd know better than anyone that you have to pick someone and stick with them.
If Gazza is the future why isn't he playing? All three are showing they are error prone and, if he isn't going to bring anyone in, surely a youthful keeper who makes errors is better than two aging players who make errors.
I think we are fine in central midfield - Cork is outstanding - and the other defensive midfielders can do a job.
Quality centre back, yep, and cover at left and right back.
Don't like the sound of Benayoun - used to rate him, but not now. He's obviously looking for a short-term Adam stand-in.
Arshavin could be an inspired loan signing for someone though (probably QPR or Reading) - just needs to be loved and has obvious quality. That said, like a Berbatov or Le Tiss, the other players would need to accept he won't track back and find him at every opportunity, but that's the same with Benayoun.

most fans would be astonished for Saints to go into the market for another keeper. Our recent record is better and we just seemed to be loosing the edge in midfield. I would be looking for defensive cover/competition and another attacking midfield player with skill,,,, a sort of Guly only one that scores... ;0)
Totally different game on Tuesday as well had Boruc dropped the ball to one of their players in the first 10 minutes - was like watching Bart vs Palace all over again, but he got away with it.
I honestly don't believe we can afford to be dropping silly points from individual errors any more and the main players who have regularly contributed them are: Davis, Gazza, Boruc, Jos, Guly and Fox.
I have nothing against any of these players, not in the slightest, it's just a fact and those six stand out like sore thumbs in an otherwise excellent group in and around the first team.
Their quality isn't quite there for the Premier League or, in Gazza's case, he's not quite ready.
Very happy to be proved wrong on the Gazza point though as he's clearly very promising - can we take that gamble though?

Also with players like cork able to play full back, I would say a centre half is needed to keep the three we have on their toes and to get more competition there and cover and a midfield holder of the ball but who can also score... Guly may still find his wings and start scoring but we may loose the fight to stay up unless we can create a bit more directly from midfield.

In everyone's opinion, where does each area of the team stack up against our four rivals for survival.
Here's my thoughts:
Attack: better than Reading and QPR and, as a group including our wing threats, Villa and Wigan. Reasonable depth on bench though no proven replacement for Ricky.
Midfield: better than QPR, Villa, Wigan and Reading. Reasonable depth on bench both attacking and defensively.
Defence: better than QPR, Reading and Villa, at least on a par with Wigan, but no depth on bench.
Goalkeeping: on a par with QPR and Reading, worse than Wigan and Villa, similar quality on bench.

Also with players like cork able to play full back, I would say a centre half is needed to keep the three we have on their toes and to get more competition there and cover and a midfield holder of the ball but who can also score... Guly may still find his wings and start scoring but we may loose the fight to stay up unless we can create a bit more directly from midfield.

most fans would be astonished for Saints to go into the market for another keeper.
Players do make mistakes, but as mentioned, it isn't coincidence that Jos, Fox and our keepers are making the vast majority. All the others in the first team squad are quality, clearly, and it is no coincidence either that we've improved massively defensively since Fox and Jos were dropped.
The only area we have yet to sort out in terms of regular individual mistakes is... goalkeeper maybe?

Normally I wouldn't write an article about opposition fans but following today's 5-0 win over Pompey, special mention must go to the travelling Portsmouth fans who made the trip to the County Ground today.
1,504 Pompey fans made the pilgrimage to Swindon to watch their team take a 5-0 beating but to them, it didn't matter.
Their club, like Swindon Town have been through the mire, rubbish ownership and no money and came within days of liquidation, in fact they aren't out of the woods yet.
Many fans would march out being down 3-0 but the majority stayed and just had fun.
They know they are certain to play League Two Football next season, should they still be in existence.
Ok, whilst not mathematically certain, and Pompey are only just in the League One relegation places but they will get a 10 point deduction when they finally exit administration which will take them to the bottom of the pile.
Whilst Town fans mocked their Hampshire counterparts with chants of 'Going Down', Pompey fans responded with humorous chants of "We lose every week, We lose every week....you're nothing special.....We lose every week!"
Towards the end of the game you could be mistaken for thinking Southampton had been relegated from the Premier League as wild cheering erupted from the Portsmouth fans.
Late in the game the fans chanted 'lets pretend we scored a goal', and all enjoyed a wild celebration.
Such was the class of the Portsmouth fans, even Town boss Paolo Di Canio clapped them at the end of the game.
Whilst we are enjoying the good times right now, it was great to see a club, although in the brown stuff, still able to enjoy themselves and be proud of the effort the players are making despite getting thumped week in and week out.
We look forward to the next time our paths cross.
As our sister site Vital Pompey would say, 'PLAY UP POMPEY!' and lets hope the fans do gain proper ownership of the club, they deserve it.

"survival" in the league by being purchased by the trust is just a slower death.... football fans sometimes have more heart than brains but then again I include myself in that...

Keeper wise I tend to trust Nigel and respect the fact that unlike Arry he doesn't go out and suggest his current keepers need replacing - he is never negative towards his own players.
That's why I believe in reality there will be a keeper signing.
If he really thinks Davis is good enough why drop him twice? Same happened with Fox and Jos - he gave them every chance before deciding they simply weren't up to it. Same with Fonte who, in contrast, has shown he can adapt.
Davis, who incidentally I thought would come back stronger, should now go out on loan - no risk in replacing him with another loanee.

Nigel has done brilliantly to get this defence to the transfer window outside of the relegation zone, but be under no illusions, even if Boruc suddenly transforms into an assured keeper, if we don't strengthen our goalkeeping cover and cover across the back, our defence will not be good enough to survive. One injury and we are back to conceding three or four a game.
We are entering the SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON AND THE CLUB STILL DONT KNOW WHO TO PLAY IN GOAL !!!. That says it all for me, the ones we have today ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Two of them are nearly OAP.s in footballing terms , leaving one to learn off of the two that cant claim the no.1 jersey ffs.

I don't suggest dropping any of our first choice back four, but we need players who are at least as good or ideally better (especially in the middle) who can come in if we have any injuries or suspensions, which will happen. Remember we went down last time largely because Svennson got crocked for the run in.
Rest of the squad are, I think, good enough - our midfield and attack is at least as good as Stoke's or Norwich's and certainly all the teams around us.

slugger wrote:Generous. Fans have been boycotting the home games Slugger, as a way of not giving dosh to the crooks. MGRA's argument doesn't really stack up with respect to that point. Anyway - not really getting into all this - as loads of your fans just don't understand it - just giving some views from opposition observers on the fans for the comedy comments above. If the trust are successful the numbers will go up at home again, as they did at the start of the season before the realisation that BC wasn't moving on.

Just for you here it is: EDITORS BLOG: Pompey Fans A Credit Normally I wouldn't write an article about opposition fans but following today's 5-0 win over Pompey, special mention must go to the travelling Portsmouth fans who made the trip to the County Ground today. Whilst Town fans mocked their Hampshire counterparts with chants of 'Going Down', Pompey fans responded with humorous chants of "We lose every week, We lose every week....you're nothing special.....We lose every week!" Towards the end of the game you could be mistaken for thinking Southampton had been relegated from the Premier League as wild cheering erupted from the Portsmouth fans. As our sister site Vital Pompey would say, 'PLAY UP POMPEY!' and lets hope the fans do gain proper ownership of the club, they deserve it.Seedhouse the Unrepentant wrote:We will have to turn the volume down on the telly 'cos the bestest ever bestest travelling fans will be making soooo much noise! I'm with Nigel on this , the goalies we have just need confidence , i'm sure it'll come .
If he doesn't then he WILL be in the market for another keeper. I'm not sure about Butland, but I do like the look of another young keeper - Simon Moore - for Brentford, ex-Saints youth team and he's from the Isle of Wight. If you haven't seen him look at some clips, they guy reminds me of Peter Schmeichal.

I just hope Boruc can show the form he had at Celtic and not the first 15 mins of the Arsenal game for the rest of the season.
In Nigel we trust.
