Fonte fear as Chelsea run riot
5:33pm Saturday 5th January 2013 in Saints News
Saints were left counting the cost of the FA Cup as they were thrashed 5-1 by Chelsea and saw Jose Fonte stretchered off.
Jay Rodriguez gave Saints the lead midway through the first half but Chelsea took control to win the third round tie at a canter.
Demba Ba scored a brace on his Chelsea debut with Victor Moses, Branislav Ivanovic and a Frank Lampard penalty doing the rest of the damage.
But probably the biggest worry for Saints was seeing Fonte carried off with a knee injury.
Ba got life at Chelsea off to a fine start.
The 27-year-old completed his move from Newcastle to west London yesterday and took just 35 minutes to open his account for the Blues.
Rafael Benitez's side had fallen behind to a fine Jay Rodriguez goal but Ba quickly drew his new side level, getting the final touch on a goalbound Juan Mata effort.
Victor Moses' strike in first-half stoppage time gave Chelsea the lead, with Branislav Ivanovic heading the visitors further ahead seven minutes after the restart.
Ba put the tie out of any doubt in the 61st minute, linking up impressively with his new team-mates to slot home past Artur Boruc.
The Senegal international was denied a hat-trick goal by the Southampton goalkeeper, who was beaten from the penalty spot by Frank Lampard, equalling Kerry Dixon's all-time scoring record of 193 for Chelsea to put him joint second behind Bobby Tambling.
The match took a while to get going on a mild afternoon at St Mary's, with David Luiz's tame 13th-minute effort the first of note.
Play swung from end to end as both sides patiently waited for an opener, which went to the home side.
Jason Puncheon sent a fine through ball to Rodriguez, who took a touch before expertly slotting past Ross Turnbull with the outside of his right foot.
The 22nd-minute strike jolted the visitors into life and Eden Hazard soon came close with a curled effort that went narrowly wide of the far post.
Luiz had to react quickly to deny James Ward-Prowse at the other end after the teenager found space on the edge of the box, but the Blues were becoming an increasing attacking threat.
Ba's link-up play was improving as the half wore on and Saints were having to defend resolutely.
However, their resistance only lasted 35 minutes as the new boy opened his Chelsea account.
Hazard played through Mata, whose dink over Boruc was creeping in only for Ba to fire into the roof of the net.
Boruc was almost beaten again four minutes later, but fortunately his spill from a Moses strike went wide.
The Polish goalkeeper was looking rusty on what was only his second start since October 28 and soon fumbled a long-range Cesar Azpilicueta strike.
Chelsea were playing with new-found confidence and took the lead in first-half stoppage time, with Moses collecting a cutback from Ashley Cole to power home a low left-footed strike.
The Blues continued in the ascendancy after the restart, with Mata seeing a strike deflected wide by Guly do Prado shortly after the restart.
The Spaniard was involved yet again in the 52nd minute, sending over a left wing cross that Ivanovic headed home at the near post.
Only an excellent tackle from Luke Shaw prevented Hazard getting a fourth shortly afterwards, although Chelsea soon found the back of the next.
Having started the move, Ba showed excellent movement to latch onto a Hazard pass from the right to slot home under pressure from captain Jose Fonte.
The Portuguese defender looked to be badly injured in the challenge and was stretchered off, with Jos Hooiveld coming on in his place.
A great double save denied first substitute Steve de Ridder and then Steven Davis as Saints looked to claw a goal back, before Ba was denied a hat-trick by Boruc.
The Saints goalkeeper did excellently to stop the striker's header with his feet and had to be alert to deny substitute Lampard.
However, the midfielder did get on the scoresheet seven minutes from time.
Davis was harshly adjudged to have handled and the 34-year-old sent Boruc the wrong way to equal Tambling's record of 25 FA Cup goals for Chelsea.

A missed opportunity to give Lee a full game, because we know already know that Guly and De Ridder are not up to premiership standard, but we are still in the dark about Lee's ability.
Having said that, it is the premiership that is most important, and when we get are main creative players back, I think we are good enough to hold our own........

I have found a positive though so let Saints fans not squabble over another disappointment - at least we made the 3rd Round and the transfer window open and we need to bring some talent in - Bridge was on form today and reckons he is a Saints fan so might come back and somebody must have a decent keeper we could borrow if we can't sign one.

We know that Guly, Lee, Davis, Boruc and De Ridder are not up to it.
We also know that Richardson Butterfield Dickson Martin Chaplow Barnard Forte Hammand and Sharp are not in his plans.
That is 14 dead wood. Get rid and bring in 4 top players. Any thoughts.

I think we need two centre backs, one midfielder to cover AL, one left back to cover Shaw and someone to help take the pressure off RL. But if we are only bringing in "one or two" we are going to struggle. Lets hope you get the next targets right because Steeeve, Lee are not prem quality

We know a CB was a priority in the summer and at least one is urgent now.
We still do not have control in midfield. Have to say I am disappointed in Davis as I thought he could do it.
We must act quickly, as we cannot afford to drop more points unnecessarily as we have done in the first part of the season

I am not completely convinced when NA says he will not bring in another keeper. We do need a keeper who can give confidence to the defence as none of ours do so at present. Having said that, most prem teams seem to have some qualms over their keepers from time to time. Butland has been touted, but not sure he is what we need for this season.

In all honesty I agree it wouldn't have changed the result but we should treat away fans like they are a nuisance and not treat them better than home fans. I hope Hampshire Police are contacting the club about the whole end standing and the flares and are demanding that the allocation for the Premier League game be reduced. If it were upto me I would say NO MORE THAN 1000 tickets

Criticism of Davis, Jos and Fox is equally correct and has been proved 100% right because they've been dropped.
Booing of any player is unacceptable but don't criticise people pointing out the obvious.
Guly, in my opinion, has been slightly hard done by and Gazza can't be blamed for making the odd mistake at his age. The others are simply not good enough for this level, not their fault, but people are within their rights to point blame in their direction because they've consistently made individual mistakes, Fox in particular because some have been through lack of effort or concentration rather than sheer lack of quality.

On the subject of Arsenal - we deserved a result - mainly because we contained them and gave them no time and space on the ball.
After the first period today - there was no evidence of that.
LOSING AT HOME BY THAT SCORE
(Even in the Cup) is nowhere near good enough.
I don't think NIGEL has the ambition that the Chairman and the Fans do !!
HE TALKS A GOOD JOB IN THE PREMIERSHIP and that's about it !!

I am not completely convinced when NA says he will not bring in another keeper. We do need a keeper who can give confidence to the defence as none of ours do so at present. Having said that, most prem teams seem to have some qualms over their keepers from time to time. Butland has been touted, but not sure he is what we need for this season.
We know a CB was a priority in the summer and at least one is urgent now.
We still do not have control in midfield. Have to say I am disappointed in Davis as I thought he could do it.
We must act quickly, as we cannot afford to drop more points unnecessarily as we have done in the first part of the season
Football is a team game, and they are not playing as a team.
A good goalie organises his defence he has defenders in the right place.
yes you need a good defence but you also need a defence that has confidence in a keeper.
how many times has Kelvin not caught the ball but has palmed it into the feet of an opposition striker?
haven't seen the other two but who was it who through the ball out & the other team took it & scored?
the goalie has to come out & take high balls do ours?
yes we need new defenders but I don't put any of the keepers in the category of the two I've already mentioned I was up at Nottingham Forest where I saw a great keeping display & saw penalties saved & if I'm right that was Peter Wells.
But why aren't we looking at a new keeper as well as defenders?
if a great one is available get him why not?

Of course we'll never know for sure if today's result was indeed a blessing in disguise - but I'm glad we're out of the cup because being out of it definitely means it won't bite us - or Fonte -again.

First clubs are required to allocate a fixed % of tickets for FA cup matches. St Marys isnt set out to accomadate the higher % so decisions have to be made as to where you put away supporters. The police/ stewards would do all they can to minimise oppossing supporters walking past each other so nearly always will choose behind a goal as oppossed to on the sides.
The fact that flares and thunderflashes were let off in the ground was a disgrace but the level of stewarding and searches on entry was poor , indeed I didnt see any one , other than those with a bags, being subjected to any sort of search
Turning now to the game itself, Other than the first 30 or so minutes Saints were poor. You shoulnt seek satisfaction that you were 4 or o players short that is down to your manager but to suggest that players may be tired and neede to be rested is a bit of an strange one as I think that todays game was your 23rd of the season it was our 34th yet we still treated the competition with respect and fielded a team which featured Turnball,Azpilicueta
,Moses,Ramires,& Ba who some would argue arent first choice players
Chelsea easily sold their allocation to day but I have to say that I found it strange that there were such huge numbers of unsold seats.
Goodluck for the rest f the season but I fear for you unless you can get some more experienced legs in over the next few weeks as you can ount on the other clubs who are down there doing quite a bit in the transfer window.

Although I agree with the comments on here about the away end in the cup, unfortunately the stadium was designed and set up to handle away allocation in this way since day 1. The away team get up to 10% for league matches - 3,200 or something like smaller sections of 2,400 and 1,200 depending on the level of support. In the Cup they are entitled to up to 15% which works out at about 4,500-700 depending on the seating plan and we get left with the last block of the Northam. As for the strip - we lost the toss, it's as simple as that and Chelsea got first choice. Normal home and away doesn't apply. Agree wih Red Army though - feel sold out today. No more will I be buying extra tickets for family and friends with the attitude displayed by the manager and the club. Going by the attitude of some on here we may as well have forfeited the match altogether. Fair play to wet spam and Big Sam - they went for it at home at least and nearly put the Manure out in the 3rd round. Cracking atmosphere up there and certainly no one leaving before Fergie time. Shame Manure conjure another £22 million pound finish from out of their black hat. At least their manager plays their top buy come rain or shine. We spend £12 million and half way through the season our biggest buy has played barely a quarter of the season and doesn't even make the bench against the sort of footballing team he should revel playing against. Has he really got a dead leg? Lets hope Font is okay for next week - massive game in this run and I fear for us otherwise if the back four of late is messed up again. From the top of the Itchen Nrth today it looked like we really lost our shape second half, we went back to being the team we were about 10 matches ago. They say if you aim for Everest you might get somewhere near the summit. If the best we can aim for is fourth from bottom I hope and pray that we don't full short of that particular summit. There is a massive opportunity for this club here and now, the likes of which I didn't think would come around again. I hate to see it being taken for granted by so many.

We gave the Chel skum Supporters our prime location in the Northam. We had to rely on the Kingsland corner and Itchen North for any noise.
We were at HOME and still could not wear our RED / WHITE KIT.
The Manager got a footballing bloody nose today putting out a makeshift side against a very strong Chelsea side.
NIGEL is not good enough any more to manage........... THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON and the expectations of the fans.
I hate fat sam but he is sitting mid table and they gave it a right good go in the Cup.
I no longer support NIGEL as Manager.
He needs to take a long hard look at himself after what he put the Supporters through today !

First clubs are required to allocate a fixed % of tickets for FA cup matches. St Marys isnt set out to accomadate the higher % so decisions have to be made as to where you put away supporters. The police/ stewards would do all they can to minimise oppossing supporters walking past each other so nearly always will choose behind a goal as oppossed to on the sides.

st bevois wrote:This is an informative post. What disappointed me about today's performance was how we let the game 'go' in the second half. In the first half we had some good possession and were passing the ball around with a good tempo. The midfield seemed to be linking up well and I thought JWP who was making his first start since October 2012 looked industrious covering a lot of ground and closing down well. In the first half he played in the hole behind Rodriguez.
In the second half the shape seemed to change. JWP seemed to move to a central midfield role which is IMO his position and where he 'shines'. What I found frustrating was when he was in space in the middle of the pitch Steven Davis either didn't see him or didn't want to pass to him preferring to play the ball to the wing to Cork or Guly putting them under pressure resulting in us losing possession.
We then seemed to start playing long ball particularly when Hoovield came on and the momentum and fluidity we had in the first half was lost.
Overall we payed some good football in periods but were out classed by excellence.
I must say having 'knocked' him in the past that IMO Guly has upped his game and his work rate is much better.
The team can now concentrate on the league. It's a game about Fonte. Was NC's decision to recall Aaron Martin intuitive? Great foresight!!!!
Now lets put today behind us, regroup and gland get 3 points from Villa next Saturday!!!!!

Atmosphere was not right today. Away fans should be part of the Northam, then going around corner and into some of the Itchen. Don't isolate them up the Chapel End otherwise the proximity of all the banter and atmosphere will be lost.
When the team (Saints) is announced before kick off why use the symbol sound after each player? And why is the away team just read out and not displayed. The Announcer couldn't even pronounce half of the Arsenal players names on New years Day-it's all very amateurish...or is it just me!

I though the policing was un coridinated, there was only one male and one female steward covering two turnstyles, match programmes had sold out by 2.30 at the away end.
As for not expecting trouble well there should be enough stewards and police to ensure that it doesnt happen and yes like ou I remember Bradford but again the stewards did nothing to ensure that the smoking ban was enforced in the toilets.

Anyway enough is enough - no valium just the hard stuff for me on a Sat night. Still think we should wipe the floor with AV as long as we are positive, but if Font is out maybe Corky would be a better bet to fill in if Clyne is back at right back. Corky gives a massive 100% wherever, but we sorely need him in the middle to.

Just a point re your kit today. The FA rules are quite clear and say:
Where the colours (shirts, shorts or stockings) of the two competing Clubs are similar (as

Soo its clear for whatever reason it was your decision to play in a changed kit and not the subject to any toss

Just a point re your kit today. The FA rules are quite clear and say:
Where the colours (shirts, shorts or stockings) of the two competing Clubs are similar (as
determined by the Professional Game Board), the Away Club must change.

I'm thinking the Northam/Kingsland corner would be best...sure...we'd have to rethink the situation of some our own hardcore support...but at least the empty seats seperating the fans would be mainly out of sight from the main cameras in the Kingsland stand.

First clubs are required to allocate a fixed % of tickets for FA cup matches.
Who on earth do you think you are ??
Chelsea lost to QPR mid-week and are seen by most living in UK as a joke club.

Fonte's injury may be a blessing in disguise. This may force NC & NA to spend more on a solid CB, maybe 2. Fonte has shown significant improvement. However, would like to get an "enforcer" in there with BPL experience.
Would have loved a solid cup run. However, avoiding relegation is paramount.

Before anyone wades in too heavy I will point out that I am a Chelsea supporter and was at the game today but will make a couple of observations

Fonte's injury may be a blessing in disguise. This may force NC & NA to spend more on a solid CB, maybe 2. Fonte has shown significant improvement. However, would like to get an "enforcer" in there with BPL experience.
Would have loved a solid cup run. However, avoiding relegation is paramount.

that deserves a proper first team to be played and an urgency to try and win the game.

1) Why did we not where our own home kit?
2) Vocal support was very weak, seemed that a lot of regualrs did not go and some families used as an excuse to see Chelsea
3) The police and stewards really should have acted more with the Chelsea fans who set off the fireworks and banger, however sitting in Itchen North block 2, we had police cameras on us during all this instead!
4) we had a good start, first 20 minutes we held our own
5) Bad luck conceeding just before half time to go 2-1 down
6) second half too many players playing out of position and we started to get completely run over
7) Fonte being injured for me was not a bad thing, cause now we really do need to now find another decent/better central defender
8) Dont think our goalie looked too bad, perhaps a bit nervous in first 20 minutes, but settled well and goals were not doely down to him!
9) Ultimately their class of players exposed the real lack in depth we have and lets see if Nicole will spend some money and if Nigel has the clout to attract the quality/not quantity needed! - somehow I dont think so
10) Have a lot of respect for Nigel, however am also slightly concerned that our climb and the success for us and him has been too quick and that possibly we might just come unstuck and show that possibly we are punching currently a little above our weight - I hope not!

Why?
I think it was because the other team started to play to their champions league ability... not pretty but they shut our play down and picked us off with ease.
Should we have played Rickie - what earthly difference would he have made jogging around? Kelvin... no sorry not convinced. Lots of regular fans have called for JWP to return to the firsts... he went okay but can't be expected to compete against Euro stars yet... he's coming on though.
I wish we hadn't risked our only competent cb... he's out hurt now.
The mission is survival in the prem. The cup was properly a good opportunity to give some of the squad a run... They had a run and lost heavily.
Lesson should be learnt today by fans...stop begging for the introduction of squad players when you haven't been to training - let the manager manage - he has a very young up and coming squad and some of them will be very upset.. more so than fans.
Hey it's footy.. COYR
On with the league... get well soon Jose Fonte.
PS The only real disgrace was playing in dirty leeds colour against pompey blue... it looked disgusting.

We are a small provincial club doing fantastic thank you . You are a big city club that has massive finance and not doing very well by the standards they set themselves . (they not you)
If you factor in "added value" I think you will find Southampton are easily outperforming Chelsea.
Do you want me to spell out to you why Chelsea are not up to Man U or City ?
If so OK, I will tell you. If not, then do not come here and spout off about how you know what is best for Southampton FC.
Yes you won 5-1 today. Our target is Prem league survival, which every single day I try to think how we will achieve . Your targets, you will not get will you.
So do not come on here and say Saints were poor. Chelsea were dreadful v QPR and many games this season which is why you sack managers every two minutes.
Your arrogance comes because you think you are a Chelsea supporter and that means because Chelsea are a bigger club than Southampton , then you are a better, bigger more informed supporter and can give advice to smaller clubs.
Let me worry about Saints. You worry about Chelsea.

I dont think my nerves can deal with Boruc in goal for another game....
He wasn't to blame for any of the goals today. His distribution led to our goal and is in the van der Sar league. Other aspects may not be as good but he is the best we have so best to get behind him and treat him as one of ours!
Early jitters - what excuse would a seasoned pro have for failing to take unchallenged a simple cross, and then a few minutes later to spill an easy low cross he should have comfortably gathered into his midrift.
Not to blame for any of todays goals? You mean he didn't throw anything into his own goal? But what did he do to keep anything out? Like his compatriot, Tomasceski, against England in 73?
Other aspects - other than distribution - may not be as good? What? Like shot stopping? Command of his area? Spreading confidence? Oh, that alright, then.
Van der Saar? Yeah. Right. Dick Van Dyke, more like.
Forget past performances for Celtic. The guy is history, and from my observations some kinda nervous wreck.

first half looked good, second half was a disgrace, embarrassing. it costs a lot for us fans to pay almost premier league prices for an fa cup match and i travelled from bristol today, even broke down on route!
that deserves a proper first team to be played and an urgency to try and win the game.
adkins doesnt care about cup matches. i dont care if we lost but it;s how you lose, we didnt even show any fight! thats poor. , most people wanted to see their fave players play such as lambo and ramirez and even kelvin davies in goal!
anyway, must get some new players in this week! defense is shocking, i would go ahead and get butland and the italian defender, even scott dann?
we could also do with a tom ince and matt phillips.

Saints have their first poor performance in a long time and some one says it is time to replace NA? BS! Saints were outclassed today. Plain and simple. Chelsea is too deep and have much bigger pockets.
COYR!
Some may think I'm mad but I quite enjoyed today. Yes, it was 5-1, but let's have a bit of perspective. Although I haven't seen the highlights and can only say it as I saw it at the time, take away what seemed like two dodgy goals and the lapse just before the break and it wasn't as bad as some might have us think.
First, I was glad the free-spending European Champions (some might like to be reminded of that) put out a top side and, trying to match them, we played a reasonably strong side while allowing SRL a day off.
Let's be fair, even with our best eleven we'd have struggled today. Without Rickie, Nat, Adam and Gaston we really had our hands full. Yet, a real positive was the way we ran the game up until the equaliser (was it offside?).
Alas, after that, Chelsea took control. The second half was a master class. If you want to criticise the team for 'not competing' in the second half, then fine, but don't forget that it was two world class players - Mata and Ramires - who were running the show. The penalty looked like the kind of poor decision which has spoilt so much of this season.
As for the players, I have to say, Boruc didn't win me over but he did get in a couple of really good blocks.
Jose played well. Let's hope he's back soon.
Yosh's distribution was poor, otherwise, okay.
Jos slotted in okay.
Cork and Shaw played far better last Tuesday but both did well first half.
Spiderman ran his socks off. I can understand why Nigel gave him a rest.
As with Shaw, JWP doesn't look out of place. He did okay and will get better and better.
Davis worked hard, too.
Punch posed a real threat but ran out of stream once Chelsea took control.
Lee looked a bit lightweight. Pity.
But my big shout is for Guly and Jay. Both have had their critics on here this season. Both covered a lot of ground. In the first half, Guly gave Shaw a lot of help and between them they kept Hazard very quiet. When Guly was moved inside (when Spiderman went off), along with Steeeeve, he was at the heart of most of our somewhat limited attacking threat.
You couldn't have asked for much more from Jay and he took his goal well.
Today, you just have to accept that we didn't get the breaks and we played a team whose finances and experience are far greater than ours.
Time to move on .......
just kidding

Before anyone wades in too heavy I will point out that I am a Chelsea supporter and was at the game today but will make a couple of observations

The problem now is as Seedhouse identifies because Fonte is injured we disadvantage ourselves against Villa and for however long he will be out for.
Those moaning that we fielded a weakened side are plain wrong. You can't play injured players like Lallana and Clyne. That was the same line up as Arsenal with the exception of Gaston and Rickie. Nigel has clearly stated Gaston pulled out saying he wasn't fit. Therefore the only change of choice was to rest Lambert and give our £7m striker Jay Rod a run out in his proper position. That is not fielding a weak side.

In addition I'm concerned forLuke Shaw. This is a 17 year old lad who is still developing physically. He has played every game over the festive season including yesterday' game. How long will he be able to sustain 90 minutes week in week out? He's a great talent and has done well but I'm concerned he will burn out and then where will we be for a left back? Will NA bring in another left back this month? IMO he needs to.
Albeit wise in hindsight perhaps yesterday's game would have been better if Fox, Chaplow, Martin, Lee, De Ridder had started thus resting the first team squad players for the league which suely must take priority.
Hopefully Fonte will not be out for too long. No doubt we will be kept in the dark about his injury as we are about Lallana'sinjury. Will Gaston be back for the Villa game? Will Clyne? If not is NA going to keep Cork at right back? Will JWP play - he didwell first half yesterday but flagged in the second half which perhaps is not surprising - I was reminded having read the paper this morning that he hadn't started a first team game since October 2012!!!

STAYING UP!
That said, completely gutted at the way we got steamrollered after they scorred their first goal.
We were out competed in midfield which allowed them to take us to the cleaners.
Oh so noticable that we have no one that can hold up the ball up front when Rickie is missing.
Jay Rod took his goal well, agreed, but his game has to include holding the ball not just chasing.
We know our defence is week so even more reason, to allow them to get out of our penalty area and squeeze the game.
Admittedly the service to the forwards is sluggish, sloppy and often too high.
Not sure that Nigel learned anything from the game because we played very well for 30 minutes then completely lost the plot for the rest.
Where were the players throwing their selves in front of the ball to stop shots on goal where was the desire not to lose?
I have sympathy for Redarmy1's frustration, all the highs and lows of supporting the Saints were on display yesterday.
Did we really want to win?
Don't know!
What a shame!
We look to have lost Fonte, who has grown into a good prem player, if this was just a exercise in playing the squad.
Anyway we have to move on.

Well on paper this result would be a forgone conclusion and a CHELSEA win,but this is the F.A. cup and it does tend to throw in a few suprising results with lower/lesser teams winning on occasions otherwise it might as well be presented to the top team at the end of the season.
Anyway the SAINTS were stuffed can't complain and our expectations should not be so high that we start questioning our team or management, we have a position in this league which we have still to be established, hopefull
y it will be high enough to avoid relegation.
So did we come out of this tie well? not if we have lost Fonte .
Did we need the cash that a cup run would generate? I think not.
Do we need the bragging rights with our neighbours down the road? plenty of time for that in the future.(For us that is )
Talking of our NEIGHBOURS are they not eligible to enter the Hampshire cup and compete with their true rivals like Aldershot, Totton and Eastliegh etc

At half time - if it was a crucial game we would have brought on Rickie to get the second goal.
If we had put out a more unbalanced makeshift side than we would have been on the end of an 8-0 drubbing or worse.

Firstly Northam broken up to accommodate the Chelsea fans.
Next the support is always related to the Quality of football.
When we went 1-0 up the fans reacted accordingly.
When we were losing and overrun - they were quiet and stayed like that.
Finally ... If you were front line you experienced it and if you were in the Chapel or southern end of the ground you didn't ...

It will be lively at Chelsea Away and when they come down in the League with a smaller allocation.

One serious point and watch the highlights to prove it , it cant do the players confidence any good with the awful home vocal support and the way "fans" flood out of the ground a long long time before the final whistle ...

Kent141 isn't a Saints fan by any stretch of the imagination. He's one of our Pompey friends. If you haven't sussed that out, you're lacking something.

We simply have to have an 'end'..Chapel should be the away stand, ps why is it not a copy of the Northam end....how come all those stupid empty boxes/exits are right in the middle behind the goal?
Another point though, can you think of another club that moves the main vocal section of their own fans to accomodate away supporters ?
Can you see Liverpool moving the cop ?
I think not.

villa will be the biggest game of the season for two reasons.one we must win and two and i think this is more important if boruc is in goal we will not be adding a keeper in the transfer window
I think by Thursday his heart will say pick Gazza and his head will say pick Kelvin. But I think he'll wait until Friday to find out what his liver has to say.
Likely he will have no plan or a even a plan to have a plan until he's positive that he's no longer unsure.
However, I think he needs to make his choice now so everyone's clear. I've therefore e mailed him to point out that, as Kelvin saves a lot with his legs and is good at coming out early to clear when needed and Gazza has height and saving agility, he should pick them both. Gazza would be designated the 'official goallie' and allowed to handle while Kevin would use his body and legs.
I guess the danger is that Nige may take this idea and want to field all three goallie's - so the concept may not help him to make a final decision. It will. however, ensure that his indecision is final.

On a positive it was good to meet Strassie and his lads in the Joshua Tree and will see them again for proper beers Newcastle away.
As for the team selection, you know how it is with the BBC? The Tories claim they're too left wing, the unions claim they're too establishment. On that basis, and because I've seen so much cr4p on ITV and overseas, I've always thought the Beeb do a fairly balanced job.
On here, some say Nigel played a weakened side, some say he should have fielded eleven teenagers. So, I guess he got it about right with what was available. In fact, as you said earlier, Seed, the only rested player was Rickie. He was without:
1. Lallana
2. Ramirez
3. Gazza
4. Clyne
5. Chaplow
Few teams in Europe would have lived with Chelsea in the second half. As I said before, they are the free-spending European Champions after all.
Only disappointment for me was that Boruc and Lee didn't do enough to suggest they're good enough. However, unlike certain fans, they and all the other players who pull on the shirt will always have my support.

The F.A. cup 3rd round when the top 2 divisions enter the competition, and 1 of the ties was an all PREMIERSHIP contest between newly promoted SAINTS and the well established CHELSEA ( who over the past 10 years or so have won everything possible and are current champions of Europe ). Well on paper this result would be a forgone conclusion and a CHELSEA win,but this is the F.A. cup and it does tend to throw in a few suprising results with lower/lesser teams winning on occasions otherwise it might as well be presented to the top team at the end of the season. Anyway the SAINTS were stuffed can't complain and our expectations should not be so high that we start questioning our team or management, we have a position in this league which we have still to be established, hopefull y it will be high enough to avoid relegation. So did we come out of this tie well? not if we have lost Fonte . Did we need the cash that a cup run would generate? I think not. Do we need the bragging rights with our neighbours down the road? plenty of time for that in the future.(For us that is ) Talking of our NEIGHBOURS are they not eligible to enter the Hampshire cup and compete with their true rivals like Aldershot, Totton and Eastliegh etc

Who would his replacement be?
The club say they have a policy of replacing with better. So that would have to be a manager who has won stuff and will win more stuff. Or a young manager with potential who has been successful at building a club, like That bloke Nigel has done at Saints!
Chelsea have a squad 25 full internationals, bought Newcastles best striker and had a brilliant game where everything they tried worked.
League is our priority, we worked hard to get here and we have to work even harder to stay.
Chelsea fans hate their own manager and know that he will be replaced as soon as Roman gets tired of him. Constantly changing manager hasn't done them any harm, but then they buy players from the cream of the crop and are happy to let a player like Frankie Lampard leave for free!
If we could have him we would be able to bring in young players around him knowing his experience Nd leadership would help them.
Get Lawrie Mac to have a word with him.....

We have lost the closing down he does in midfield - not spectacular and often goes unnoticed.
Regards next week - with or without Fonte, if Clyne is back we have more than enough to beat Villa.
I don't think Jos will play - Cork will go across to the middle. I believe he has played in that position before, and would probably be a better bet.
Gaston should be back - but I don't expect to see Lallana for at least 2-3 weeks. No information of him from Staplewood - no photos of him in the background during erecent training sessions. So he won't be match fit for weeks.
The gap was not evident against Arsenal, but they had a bad day at the office. Chelsea have a squad full of internationals - and it showed.
Not really too worried about the events of yesterday - but it may just give the board a warning shot across their bows. We need better players that fit the club ethic - which are probably very hard to come by!
Could it be worse? Ask a Newcastle or Wolves fan! Results went for us yesterday with some of our rivals in the mix with replays - surely a game no one really wanted.
It doesn't get any bigger than Saturday - rollercoaster ride guaranteed. I just hope if we are 3-1 up at HT we hold on to this one!

To help our team as an effective 12th man.
Proud to be part of this.
Only managed to get to QPR this season so far but the crowd were superb.
In my opinion we made a difference.
When in the Chapel at SMS only about 15% of us sing our hearts out the rest generally sit in a trance or they are not sure who to ask if they are allowed to cheer or not.
They look at those cheering as if we have a screw loose.
I often shout to the ones that are near to us "YOU ARE WELCOME TO CHEER IF YOU LIKE!"

Portsmouth fans although they have far too many Neaderthals have a passion which we only rival when we play them...nothing we can do about it..unless every true red blloded Saints fan verbally addresses their quiet neighbours to join in...doubtfull though...
Bear in mind we have never really had a serious home end...
Milton was for some singing kids, Archers was for us punchier ( when we did not know better), East Stand was for Dockers...etc..
Cortese and Adkins have to know what is happening and address it...Why the away fans don't have the Chapel is beyond me..the police can cordon anything they want off...
Then Improve the acoustics at our end and dampen the Chapel...

Slating Nigel is out of order.
