Southampton centre-half Jose Fonte facing major injury crisis

Saints centre-half Jose Fonte facing major injury crisis
Saints centre-half Jose Fonte is facing weeks on the sidelines, the Daily Echo can reveal today.
The 29-year-old, who has been an ever present for Saints in the Premier League this season, was stretchered off during the FA Cup defeat to Chelsea.
Now it can be revealed he would be out for up six weeks.
Though it is still early days and Saints will hope for a quicker return, the initial prognosis is for more than a month out for the Portuguese.
It will only intensify the pressure on Saints to bring in central defensive reinforcements as soon as possible.
Nigel Adkins looks like having to partner Maya Yoshida with Jos Hooiveld at Aston Villa on Saturday.
Beyond that the cupboard is rather bare with only Aaron Martin, who has returned from a loan spell at Crystal Palace where he has struggled to get games, and Dan Seaborne, who has been on a week to week loan at Charlton and therefore can easily be drafted back in, as recognised senior central defenders.
Fonte’s absence is a major blow for Adkins who has seen his side tighten up considerably since naming a more settled back four.
Saints shipped 28 goals in their first ten games back in the top flight but have turned that form around dramatically to let in just ten in their last ten league games – and that includes three at Stoke when Hooiveld partnered Fonte rather than the regular pairing this season.
It could though open the door for Hooiveld to try and prove he has what it takes to make it in the Premier League.
The former Celtic man was such a huge presence as Saints won promotion from the Championship but has found himself down the pecking order after playing in some of the heavy defeats earlier in the season.
He made his first league start since the 4-1 defeat at West Ham in October as Saints drew 3-3 at Stoke.

We already knew we needed reinforcements for the second half of the season, this just compounds it. Time for our scouting network and management hierarchy to prove its value again please.

Sorry Seed, I am more concerned about our injury list. Like all teams, Villa's poor streak of form will come to an end at some point, and I hope it doesn't start with us on the weekend.

Once again, use of language to try to make yourself look like one of the Red tops. which you aren't.
'Major injury crisis'
really?
we all know he is injured - we were watching the match. We also are aware that being stretchered off usually means something serious.
And you aren't 'revealing' anything (plagiarising the red tops again there aren't you)
Use of language to make the problem seem more than it is. Very poor reporting.... again.

The defensive problems were far more to do with silly errors and lack of coordination. Its behind us so stop the panic alarms. Fonte is a loss that's true, so Jos needs to step up and do the job he did last season ... in any event the manager will be looking to sort it and I have confidence in him.
This was always going to be a problem but I think we will come through this phase with heads held high.

Cannot understand why we haven't signed central defender already. There are several out there some with Premier experience. We have been crying out for a good strong defender and should have brought in another in August!! Now its getting desperate!
Adkins and Cortese will want players of high quality and are prepared to invest big ot get them it seems. We do not want temporary journeymen. Adkins is building a strong team, we are getting it together, we do not want a squad full of short term purchases.

Jos, like Davis and Fox, has had plenty of chances and isn't cutting it because mind and body aren't quite sharp enough, thus several own goals and ridiculous penalties.
Hopefully he will have a miraculous return to form.
Sadly, looks like any hope of getting someone in for Villa is gone now as they won't have had time to train with the team.

Good shout Rising Son. Cork has played CB on several occasions and is a very intelligent player who will understand the "one attacks the ball, one drops off" that Fonte and Yoshida were playing very well. Pace also tends to be a important at this level and Hoiveld lacks that particular attribute.
Bit worried that there is very little news on Clyne though - they kept very quiet about Lallana and that proved a bad sign.
They weren't half as quiet about Ramirez and he came back quickly.

That is the level we must aim for and the size of the problem we face when looking to sign new players.
A lot of players will happily go and sit on the sidelines and take a wage packet you and I can only dream of. Our wage structure is Prier league, but there are three levels within that. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to work out why certain players want to stay at the top 6 clubs instead of guaranteed games at Saints.
Most Italian clubs are in financial difficulties and it should be easier to prise players from there, and Northern Europe the wages are lower so look attractive for a wage increase for their players. Yet we still have posters asking for Premier League experience.
Why?
It is not the best football, just the most exciting.
Whoever we sign, it will take a lot of negotiating and even then that or those players still need to fit the club model.
Sign Frank Lampard!!!!
Yeah, I know. Dream on !!!!!

The Saints are reported to have put a sizeable bid on the table - believed to be around £8million - but they are still some way short of Cagliari's valuation.
Nigel Adkins has made Astori a top target for the January transfer window and may be prepared to dig a little deeper.
Astori's agent claims his client is interested in a switch to St Mary's, but has made it clear that no agreement is close to completion at present.
Renzo Contratto told Sky Sports: "There is an important offer from Southampton but we don't know if Cagliari want to let him go.
"There is a big difference between the bid and the request of the Italian club, which is about £12million.
"If Cagliari were to accept Southampton's offer, Davide would be willing to consider the proposal.
"He would have no problem going to play in a foreign league such as the Premier League."

Because small is beautiful, too
haha
Is there any more fitting song for Skatesmuff!??
(and I didn't have to change a single word!!!)
Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...
:
that suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's too late, and...
The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.
The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
and to another give my seat
for that's the only painless feat.
The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...
A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
is it to be or not to be
and I replied 'oh why ask me?'
'Cause suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

Possibly it's not just a matter of deciding to buy a player and him turning up the next morning.

We already have Punch on the other wing who despite having a much improved season still runs into dead ends and fizzles out in the box.
Villa cannot defend against set pieces and crosses into the box so Guly OR JRod,Ricki Gaston should all be in the starting line up.

We already have Punch on the other wing who despite having a much improved season still runs into dead ends and fizzles out in the box.
Villa cannot defend against set pieces and crosses into the box so Guly OR JRod,Ricki Gaston should all be in the starting line up.
I,m sure Hos will step and hope Clyne is back.

Now, whilst in Admin and with the 2nd biggest gates in Div1, the Administrator has announced they continue to run at a loss and has axed several players and the training ground. Their HNW indivduals are having to subsidise the club as the position of the creditors isn't allowed to worsen by law or they must liquidate.
Talking to friends around the country who have no particular anti skunt position, they are all amazed at their point blank refusal to learn from past mistakes and their bare faced ongoing cheating.
That is why they will ultimately be folded.

The fee was arranged, Sturridge had the medical and agreed personal terms before the window had opened and it was released to the media, so it was just a case of signing the dotted lines. I agree with hatestheskates in that lessons should be learned
hates the skates wrote:You ask why we haven't signed any adequate replacements.
i find it staggering that with the run of games we have coming up, surely the powers that be can clearly see that we desperately need the 3 points from villa which i would say is a priorty and we have arguably are best defender and best midfielder out injured and have not signed any adequate replacements . can someone please tell me why that is? i think personally the remainer of the season hinges on these 3 points from villa and it seems the powers that be didnt learn their lessons last summer when it came to signings and are making the same mistakes again. surely they can see with jose and adam out were little more than an average side.
Possibly it's not just a matter of deciding to buy a player and him turning up the next morning.
The guys selling have an incentive to leave it late - get as many offers as possible to choose the best one. Why would they suddenly release someone.
Just my take on it.

A Missing of Skunts fits too. I think David Attenborough should do a piece on them, if he can find them that is. Best he doesn't do one of those shots of them humping each other though.

Not very confident about game against villa, too many injuries, uncertainties about signings and when, and players playing out of position. In my experience players need any excuse for a bad game. Bet anyone!!
Despite the odds on a draw being the longest, 1-1 is the favourite score.
I really can't predict this one. An early goal could seal it leaving Villa in front of a restless crowd, but our record on keeping leads is not really too reassuring.
I might even miss out on having a bet for once...

The grind through January with so many key players out is going to be vital. With that and the fact that we have eleven away games and nine at home, I'm left totally uncertain.
As ever, I'm drawn back to the betting markets - not the bookies, the exchanges. They do appear from academic studies to be very accurate in assessing the true odds of a situation. And at the moment, they have us as having a 43% chance of relegation. (For comparison, Reading 83%, QPR 64%, Villa 35% and Wigan 33%)
So, I'l follow the money and say we have a 57% chance of making it.

As they know Saints game is priority so Villa may not be a walk over ?
vs Wigan Aston Villa team : Guzan, Herd, Clark, Lichaj (Albrighton 64), Lowton, Ireland (El Ahmadi 63), Holman (Bowery 63), Bannan, Bennett, Weimann, Benteke.

Put £758 on Saints to be relegated. If we stay up, you've lost £758 but you don't care as you're so happy that we're still up.
Go down and you have £1,000 to cheer you up, enough to buy a football team of your own - or at least part of one. Maybe.
