Molde's Vegard Forren due in Southampton to discuss personal terms ahead of £4m transfer

Saints are closing in on their first signing of the January transfer window with defender Vegard Forren expected in Southampton today to discuss personal terms ahead of a £4m move.
The Norwegian international was due to start a trial at Liverpool today ahead of a possible permanent switch to Anfield.
However, Saints have stolen a march by agreeing a fee in the region of £4m with his club, Molde, that has been accepted.
Liverpool have told Molde that they don’t intend on matching that bid and so the trial has been cancelled.
Forren was staying on Merseyside last night in preparation for the now aborted trial but is now diverting to Southampton with his agent for talks over personal terms and a medical.
If all goes well then the deal is expected to be completed quickly, albeit probably not in time for Forren to feature against Chelsea tomorrow night.
Saints’ interest has been confirmed by Molde boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who admitted earlier today that the Norwegian club had accepted a bid for the player, who has also been linked with Everton and Reading.
"There have been many inquiries from various English clubs, but Southampton submitted an offer," the former Manchester United striker told Norwegian newspaper Romsdals Budstikke.
"It was very interesting for us and Vegard. We are more or less agreed with the club, but nothing is a hundred percent confirmed.
"Molde is close to a deal, so we'll see if this is something that all parties will go with."
It comes as no surprise as Saints look to bolster the centre of their defence that was already thin on numbers before the injury to Jose Fonte which could sideline him for up to six weeks.
Forren, who won the first of his five international caps in January 2012 and has over 150 appearances for Molde under his belt, was scouted in person at least twice by Everton manager David Moyes recently.
Fulham and Belgian side Club Brugge were also linked with a move for the defender with the latter being turned down due to Forren’s desire to play in the Premier League.
“For me the Premier League is the best place to play football. That is what we are working towards now if there is something there,” he said.
“I want to go to a club where I feel that I am focused on. It must be possible to play regularly throughout the season.
“Playing in the Premier League would of course be a big challenge if I get the chance. It’s a different pace of football. But I have developed a lot through good experiences in the Europa League and with the national team. It gives me confidence that I can perform in the Premier League.”

I was hoping for Fredrik the Red, the FC Oslo centre-back whose direct ancestor was Eric the Red, who discovered Greenland in 970AD. But this young Viking will add some much needed brutality to our defence.
He will also help bring on Spiderman, who has all the makings of a good hatchet man in defence, but lacks the raiding qualities of the Norwegians.
Presume he'll take a while to get up to speed (doesn't the Norwegian league have a long winter break?) - and he'll need to adjust to our culture which doesn't really accommodate rape, pillage and plunder.
Hopefully, we'll get an update from Norwegian Saint later.

Both Liverpool and Everton have more limited resources these days. The difference is they need to tweek their sides, we are still building. It may be the 4million is not out of their budget, yet if they are going to bring in other players may take them outside that budget. Their need for a centre half may not be as critical as ours. Also going for Forren may also leave room for other transfers, which may not have been possible with Astori's Transfer tag and wages. Fingers crossed this guy joins and does the business.

Not a good sign when he's only played for Molde. Liverpool wouldn't match £4m because he's worth less so we might have overpayed for an average player. According to a few feeds, we have been looking at him for a few months - along with a number of other clubs - and Claus recommended him highly. He has come here in preference to Liverpool or Everton as he wants first team football, not to sit on the bench. Which is exactly the sort of player we want, young, talented and hungry!
What this does mean is that there is obviously funds left for another swoop, likely to be for a winger who can play either side. Lallana is injured and it looks like Punch is off in the summer, so we do need a replacement. Perhaps Tom Ince or Matty Phillips - I would be happy with either, but Ince might be the better long term bet?

Whenever he was around I always felt "they shall not get past him". I have always reckoned losing him to injury was one of the main reasons Saints deteriorated so quickly.

Always think it is encouraging when you hear other good teams were interested. The other teams will always make an excuse if they miss out, so take their comments with a large pinch of salt.
Re Astori, I am told it might still happen, but only late in the window. It depends on his Italian offers he gets. If they don't materialise then we would be the best option.

if you go and look through other threads you will see saintlysoul and thebooooorers posts and see why! but just to let you know saintlysoul has `inside info` and has been kind enough to pass that on to us all. this info is that the club has no money and NC and NA do not speak to each other. he also knows all about contracts. what you must not do though is directly confront him with regards to his posts, if you do correct him he wil just give you loads of abuse about how stupid you and infact we all are and then try to twist his words to worm his way out of being wrong. thebooorer has an intense dislike of NC and will use any thread to let us know, again he/she is never ever wrong and will react with abuse if this is pointed out!

if you go and look through other threads you will see saintlysoul and thebooooorers posts and see why! but just to let you know saintlysoul has `inside info` and has been kind enough to pass that on to us all. this info is that the club has no money and NC and NA do not speak to each other. he also knows all about contracts. what you must not do though is directly confront him with regards to his posts, if you do correct him he wil just give you loads of abuse about how stupid you and infact we all are and then try to twist his words to worm his way out of being wrong. thebooorer has an intense dislike of NC and will use any thread to let us know, again he/she is never ever wrong and will react with abuse if this is pointed out!

I think it's about 50 / 50. A few good games in the start gives confidence, and then I'm sure he'll be a great player. Some mistakes could mean the bench, and mybe the last we'll ever see of him.

If this signing goes through, you truly must be saints. I rate him in quality close to national team CB partner Hangeland, though in style closer to LFC CB Agger.
Forren's most apparent feature is the ability to break attacks/passes in front of the attackers, I'am surprised that media/experts has not pointed out. Yes, he is a good passer of the ball, fairly fast (not very), good at positioning, great in the air and a fearsome tackeler,
He can play CB and LB, likely also defensive midfielder, given the chance, as he should be considered an attacking minded defensive player.
I would have loved it if he would go to LFC and compete (read; complete) the likes og Skrtel and Agger, but Saints may prove to be a shorter way to the first 11 line-up.

If this signing goes through, you truly must be saints. I rate him in quality close to national team CB partner Hangeland, though in style closer to LFC CB Agger.
Forren's most apparent feature is the ability to break attacks/passes in front of the attackers, I'am surprised that media/experts has not pointed out. Yes, he is a good passer of the ball, fairly fast (not very), good at positioning, great in the air and a fearsome tackeler,
He can play CB and LB, likely also defensive midfielder, given the chance, as he should be considered an attacking minded defensive player.
I would have loved it if he would go to LFC and compete (read; complete) the likes og Skrtel and Agger, but Saints may prove to be a shorter way to the first 11 line-up.

and do you know what? I don't care if we get relegated because it won't be a disaster for Southampton. We'll go back and rule the Championship like we did last year, lick our wounds and then work on getting back into the Premier League again.
