What do you think about Nicola Cortese's decision to sack Nigel Adkins?

WITH Nigel Adkins being sacked by Saints, we want to know what you make of the situation?

Do you agree with it, or do you think it's a bad move?

Cortese has demonstrated an utter contempt for Southampton FC - it's players and supporters. He has never either understood or supported the heritage and history of the club and its umbilical links with the city, and past players and managers respected by all whose hearts are with the city and its club. He is what he has always been and always will be - a selfish, arrogant, greedy banker who cares about nothing but himself. I hope Marcus is placing a curse on Cortese from beyond the grave right now. If he isn't, then all true football supporters are. The guy's a total sh1te

We now know why things have been so quite on the transfer scene this January. Cortese has been sneaking around to replace Nigel Adkins. Would like to bet Cortese was gutted when Saints managed a comeback to draw against Chelsea as a loss would have provided Cortese with the perfect excuse to sack NA. Onwards and downwards I fear - just like Espanyol.

Tony in Liberia says...
12:53pm Fri 18 Jan 13

Well, for me that is a totally stupid decision. You only sack the manager if (a) he's lost the dressing room and/or fans, or (b) results are carp. The support for Adkins is obvious, while results are currently good enough for Europe, so neither reason makes sense.

Nigel would have got us to the top reaches of the league, and on into Europe. This guy - well, I'll support the Saints manager, but nothing I've read about him inspires me.

I'll be chanting "One Nigel Adkins" on Monday night, and my respect for Cortese, which wasn't that high, goes down another notch.

One can only hope that this guy knows what he's doing, that it's part of a long-term restructuring of how Saints are managed which achieves something, and that we are all grudginly impressed by the end of the season - but somehow I don't think so.

Thank you Nigel, you were a great manager, and had the potential to be our best ever. Good luck wherever you go next - I doubt if it will take long to be back - hopefully the top job at Liverpool....

Reserve judgement at this stage. Nigel was great, always will be rememered for what he has achieved for us but has he taken us as far as he can.

This new chap, is massively respected in Spain and was touted as a long term managerfor the likes of Real Madrid or Barca. He had a bad run of results at Espanyol, but they are in financial meltdown and there near neighbours are Barca so are basically f**ked whichever way you look at it.

Ok the new manager is a bit unknown but Cortese is not stupid, he is very shrewd.
He said he wants Champions league football let him prove it.
We were struggling,FACT! Nigel was lost in the prem.To bring costly players in means staying up or

I don't post on here very often, but I check it out at least twice a day. As a long distance Saints fan, I am shocked at the decision, but I wouldn't say suprised.

Things haven't gone perfectly for Adkins, though the recent turn around has been amazing. I think we may have also found it harder to attract high quality players due to Adkins' low profile overseas. I also fear Adkins would have struggled to take us any further up the table then 10th, and Europe has been the long-term goal for a while.

It was a now or never, however, as any new manager would need time in the transfer window to turn things around. NC has never let us down before, and though I do thing this decision is slight on the mad side (at least wait until the end of the season), I am more then prepared to give Pochettino a chance. It's not his fault afterall.

When all is said and down, Nigel Adkins is a Southampton legend, and will be missed, regardless of what happens!

A completely unjustified decision and one that will send the club backwards. Anyone who has followed football for many years (many more than Cortese) will realise the benefit of continuity in a football club.
The problem with Cortese is that he has too much power and has adopted a dictator’s attitude towards all and sundry with no thoughts of their feelings. Pardew and now Adkins, along with the banning of photographers at SMS, and his shabby dealings with other clubs during transfer negotiations.
To quote Matt Le Tissier “Cortese is not actually a very nice human being”.
The problem that all of us that support the Saints are powerless to do very much. Like Chelsea fans who have to suffer from someone who enjoys firing managers, we realise that Cortese, with the Liebherr family, own the club ,saved the club and can do virtually what he wants.

For he's the one you must satisfy above all the rest as he's with you right up to the end, and you would have passed your most difficult test if the man in the glass is your friend.

I've been reading the rumours for weeks but just laughed at the stupidity of the suggestions that Nigel would be sacked, Nigel drove the dream that we have all been living since Marcus (RIP) saved our club. Not just the incredible results or the two promotions (who can forget the joy at those two pitch invasions), but the manner in which he conducted himself and the style of football will mean that Nigel will live long in the memory of all true Saints fans.

I still can't believe that this has really happened. The new boy has had two or three seasons experience managing in a foreign league and was sacked for poor results and has no English football (never mind EPL) experience. I just don't get it.

I was one of those fans that would have stuck by Nigel even if we were relegated as he would have got us back in the EPL and moved forward. He was the future of this club, and a future England Manager. Why have we sacked the best English Manager in the country? I now fear, not only for our survival but for what the future holds for this club. I thought the days of constant sackings and uncertanty were over and we were on a long term path but it seems not.

A complete and utter nightmare. Monday night should be interesting!

Can he even speak English well enough to communicate this grand vision of some undefined 'glorious tomorrow' to the players? With Adkins at the helm, I felt my club was on the right track. We could have gone up, we could have gone down. To be truthful, I couldn't really care either way, just as long as the team performed honestly and my club felt a bit different - felt a bit more honest - than all those others which were at the mercy of soulless billionaires and/or misc. spivs/crooks. I am absolutely disgusted with my football club, when Nigel Adkins came in we were at the bottom of division 1 - the 3rd tier of English football. Under his management we have achieved back to back promotions to the Premier League, and we have been doing well over the past few months – a win last weekend at Villa and a draw at Chelsea on Wednesday!

Nigel has given our academy players a chance within the first team and blooded them very carefully, that coupled with the fact that we’ve only lost 2 in the last 10 league games leaves me shocked and astounded!

Nigel from all the Saints fans, thank you so much for what you’ve achieved; most of the fans gave you the vote of confidence and confirmed we’d rather be relegated with you as the manager than bring change, clearly the Chairman didn’t listen to the fans.

This is a huge mistake and shows the club (or idiot running it) did not back NA after we got promoted. This behind the scenes manager appointment is confirmation NA was to go all along. NA got us 2 fantastic promotons, the last time was 1977/78 and I was there for that and the many seasons to follow which Saints had managers for longer than a few seasons. If this new manager was so goos why wasnt he head hunted and appointed behined NA`s back while in championship ready to take over in Prem? and all this so called experience in a Spanish leaque with small clubs is on a par with leaque2/Blue square bet. Its forthe future vision and working with youth? Well thats what Nigel Adkins has been doing for that last few seasons Mr Cortese (who now shows he knows nothing about football just like Lowe). Cortese is demonstrating that he wants to be a big player in football like a certain Chelsea owner and just do what he likes. I know some fans dont like it, but it shows Cortese's ambition. He wants us to stay up and does not want to be a bit part team. We are the 4th richest club in the league.
Ok the new manager is a bit unknown but Cortese is not stupid, he is very shrewd.
He said he wants Champions league football let him prove it.
We were struggling,FACT! Nigel was lost in the prem.To bring costly players in means staying up or
suicide.
I say give him a chance, the players are big enough to get on with th job,.
Dont forget this new guy will bring new coaches as well.
I am right behind him, results will speak for themselves.
It doesn't look good, with a record of 49 wins from 146 games

Surprised by the timing yes surprised by the event no. Not sure the new guy will be able to pick up the pace in good time to get us up the league but you never know its a funny old game. The fans are fantastic but its the team we support whoever is in it and the club is owned by its shareholders. They get to make these big decisions not us. The only way we can influence is by our feet but what would that get us? COYS

As I've said on other threads.Haven't commented for ages as felt all was going as expected and happy with how we were adjusting. Not sure how to feel now tho. Cortese is normally prooved right so will give him benefit of doubt...............

..However, if we are not top 10 at end of season wont renew my season ticket as feel its too expensive and fed up with games being moved to stupid times. May as well save my money and watch on Sky. I expect MUCH higher than first season survival now or else why replace Nigel?
PS. Thank you Nigel for all you have done. You have no worries about getting another job you'll be snapped up.
Agree with you my dear. Can see no other reason to get rid of the best manager we have had for a very very long time if we only finish just off of the relegation places.
I use to stand up for Nicola at work stating he was the right person for the tough task of getting S F C back on an even keel. And when he does and puts the heart back into our club he then goes and puts a great big hole in the bottom of the ship big enough to sink us. He then plugs the hole with a plank that no other team has wanted since November when he was sacked for poor results.
Can not see the sense in this move at this time. White hankie monday and one chorus of THERE'S ONLY ONE NIGEL ADKINS.
No need to wish NIGEL luck, this TRUE SAINT will soon be on a training ground again with a Chairman who will show him the respect he deserves.

The bloke was probably too good, low profile, and focussed. Sotonians don't like that sort thing, and Cortese has decided that a big new shiny manager will improve his own image, and appeal to the average SFC supporter.

Absolute nonsence the "Sacking" of N.A. He had brouht the club a lon. long way. It looked like he was beginning to turn the club around. Cortese should be the one to resign as Le GOD says "Saint's are the laughing stock" lets hope our lads can manage to hold on in the Premiership. We have a good squad of players lets hope they can carry us through

Like it or not I think this is how it is;
1) As true Saints fans and all that brings historically we have a culture of stifled ambition and we have learnt to live with the occasional snatch at glory by humiliating Arse or MancU whilst being relegation dodgers.
2) Cortese is an ambitious outsider and has made it clear on numerous occasions that SFC will not be perrenial relegation fodder season after season. Now we understand he really is not joking. Can we accept this culture shift? Will he succeed or will there be a massive implosion? Get ready for an exiting and bumpy ride! COYR!

Adkins was also an inexperienced prem league manager. Sad to see him go, but we need to support the players, he may have links with some cracking players

DE

Nigel's departure was inevitable as he himself would tell you and he has alluded to it in several interviews. His job was to secure our return to the Premiership and he succesfully completed it. He has found it difficult in this league and has been given the opportunity but has been found wanting in certain areas. This was the best possible time for his departure as it means he leaves with respect, integrity and kudos, not to mention a good track record, in short he has not been sacked on the back of a bad string of results or relegation which would have severely damaged his cv (Ask Mark Hughes!)
I find it amazing that fans credit Nigel wth the meteoric rise of our club but no credit to the man who appointed him and who masterminded the said rise.
The "family" club that people talk of disappeared in the last century when Lowe arrived.
If Cortese is succesful (and I believe he will be) it won't be long before the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid are visiting here. That's good enough for me and I back him. I do not want a club that's like Wigan, happy with their manager and fighting relegation every year.
I thank Nigel for his hardwork and professionalism. In an ideal world he would be the man to take us to the next level but in the real world, he showed signs of being out of his depth already. The club must evolve.
