New Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to win over fans with 'hard work and honesty'
4:27pm Friday 18th January 2013 in Saints News
Mauricio Pochettino
NEW SAINTS manager Mauricio Pochettino promised to try and win over his club's fans with ''hard work and honesty'' after his whirlwind appointment.
The little-known 40-year-old replaced Nigel Adkins in the St Mary's hot-seat this morning, with the popular Adkins sacked despite taking the club to 15th in the Premier League after back-to-back promotions.
The new Saints manger faced the press at St. Mary's this afternoon and is well aware he has to win over fans unhappy at the departure of Nigel Adkins.
The former Espanyol manager spoke largely through an interpreter, but did say in English: ''I am very happy to be here in this amazing weather. It happened quickly, small details are not important, it's important I'm here at this project and club.''
He added in Spanish: ''They have done really well in the Premiership. In Spain we follow it closely. I am a great admirer of English football and am happy to be here.''

Pochettino, a 20-cap Argentina international in his playing days, added he had spoken to Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho about the move, while conceding he has to address the issue of supporter unrest.
''The challenge is to be part of this project, the kindness of the supporters is the biggest challenge I have,'' he said at a news conference.
''They are the biggest part of this club and I hope I can convince them with honest and hard work.
''I am very passionate about the Premier League. I have seen many games, the Premier League is an attractive league and I have spoken to people at length about it, people such as Jose Mourinho, who is a good friend of mine.
''He told me the best football in the world is being played here.''
In making the decision, executive chairman Nicola Cortese said in a statement he was looking at the long-term future of the club.
Saints drew 2-2 at European champions Chelsea on Wednesday night - a considerable feat seeing as they were in the League One relegation zone when Adkins took the job in September 2010.

is that all Cortese said- "he's looking at the future of the club" Given 95% of fans are unhappy suggests he's got this badly wrong
Nigel is a top bloke, possibly even future England manager, but has gone and there's nothing we can do about that. As Nigel himself says "control the contollables" so don't stress about the change.
Just get behind the new guy and the team Monday night. You can see what happens if you don't at Chelski.

1. Nothing surprises me in football
2. Nothing surprises me about the Saints
3. There is no such thing as loyalty in football any more
4. Football is about big business, especially in the EPL
5. Supporters are not treated as important by clubs. You can tell that by the lack of information, high prices for games etc.
6. Nicola Cortese is a success-driven and success-focused business man who regards everyone as less important than he is.
7. Any employee at St Mary’s is a commodity, manger, player or programme seller who can be hired and or fired at will
8. Saints never have had a manager ready to come in like this, so it has been in the planning for a while. This must raise questions
9. We are still better off than the shower 20 miles east of us and always will be.
10. There will always be players we would rather not see playing…and there have been many over the years
If you don’t like this analysis, consider the alternative. A certain chairman took us to the brink of oblivion. In many ways he was similar to the current one, except that NC has money behind him. As a club and as supporters, we are part of the process, paying over the odds to park for twenty minutes when buying tickets or merchandise. We want to see the better players available signing for us but this does come at a price and wherever money can be made, it will be.
In Nigel Adkins, we appeared to have a decent all round nice guy who was respected by players, fans and fellow managers alike. However, we do not know what went on inside the Club, though many will speculate. We can only wish him well
I am disappointed that Nigel has gone and the manner of his going. He deserved better than this, and so did we as supporters.
Like it or not, we have no say in these things. We can express our dismay, disgust, surprise etc., but that is football in 2013. Hope for the best, keep the faith and give the players the support they deserve.

Whilst Nigel began to get our act together slowly, still some of his substitutions were odd. If Puncho had not scored that 2nd goal I think the dissenting voices today would not be so loud.

The fact is we are all shell shocked but let's be honest there are a few who called for his head weeks ago. Then the question was - who is better?
I dismay we have manager who can't speak English. How many of our lads speak Spanish? Ramirez should be okay!!
From listening to pundits this boy is the real deal. He is tipped to be a top Manager by many. He's young, ambitious and a proper footballer. Gaston will make him feel at home but I worry about players making themselves understood especially Rickie!
These players need to change their mindset - they clearly respected NA and now they need to respect the new man and perform to the same level as for Nigel. After it's a rests driven game and effectively their performances saw NA get the sack.
Prepare for another bumpy but exciting ride - embrace the new man and give him the same chance we gave NA.
To Nigel Adkins thanks for one of the best periods I have ever experienced as a Saints fan. You will forever be a true Saint in my eyes!

And a Spanish/French speaking manager who will have to learn English quick will be a draw for the better European players.
Who knows, perhaps Nigel's eternal optimism began to rub NC up the wrong way. NC demands results, returns on his investment, if all he gets back after losing home to Sunderland is someone grinning and saying this is a good thing, that would not bode well with his high expectations.

Saints have played a particular way - with the snow it will be training inside all weekend I bet and straight out for the game against the Toffees,
I just cannot believe anything that has happened today. Good luck to the new guy but what a decision.
What will happen if we lose the next 5 games - will he get the sack I wander?
Finally - how can any club expect loyalty from players - particular the young ones like AL, LS and JWP when the Chairman shows none to his manager. They are just being educated to take the shilling from anyone paying it - he should expect no loyalty from any of them - and can you blame them?

It was clear that with the players we have a the club, the 4231ish formation was working and our centre halves were just not good enough to play a flatter formation. Nothing has changed personel wise apart from our new defender, so its pretty logical for the new guy to spend his first day in charge asking NAs assistant to weigh in big time with advice. Any attempt to "re-shape" the way we play will be foolish and we don't have time for that so I expect a Nigel-style display on Monday and hopefully 3 points.

"Strengths: His tactical acumen and success working on a small budget brought results at Espanyol, as did his ability to bring players through from the youth ranks.
Weaknesses: He has at times had fractious relationships with his players, with some of those sold during Espanyol's demise having falling out with him.
Career high: Saving Espanyol from relegation in his first few months at the club.
Career low: Being sacked the club at which he had played for the majority of his career.
Tactics: He usually favours a positive, attacking style of play using a 4-2-3-1 formation. He deploys a back four with two holding midfielders, wingers to support a lone front man and an attacking midfielder in support through the middle.
Quotes: "Mauricio is a well-respected coach of substantial quality who has gained a reputation as an astute tactician and excellent man manager. I have every confidence that he will inspire our talented squad of players to perform at the highest possible level." Southampton executive chairman Nicola Cortese, January 2013.
Trivia: Pochettino was born in the same town as Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga."

I have been following the Saints since 1954 when my dad first took me to the Dell as a six year old. So in almost 60 years of being fan I have learnt a lot of lessons. Here are some:

And Pep Guardiola never coached the female Barcelona team, did he?

What diabolical treatment of a thoroughly decent and professional man. Hardly believable, even in this day and age. Adkins has done so much for your club and been treated appallingly by the powers that be. Us Owls fans felt the same when Gary Megson was sacked when we were third in the table. Dave Jones was well received, but Mandaric was left in no doubt as to how unpopular the decision was. Think you Saints fans should let your clown of a chairman know how you feel and then get behind the new manager, unlike the Chelsea fans appalling treatment of Benitez. Fear for your premiership survival now.

MP had all his best players sold last summer about 10-12 because Espanyol were in deep debt.
He has had to constantly rebuild there and had three good seasons there before this one.
He is rated by The Pep and Jose,
What ever we think of NC he has not been wrong before. Unlike Lowe a lot of money is being invested in the club.
No Nigel didn't deserve the sack but if we don't give our all for our team on monday, then we are in for a bad night.
NIgel always said we are in this together, fans, team and a manager. Well our players are going to be deflated enough without us creating a hostile atmosphere. They need us like never before on monday.
Sure i am gutted NA is gone but he has, we need to be behind the lads on monday or we are going to get stuffed pure and simple.

How the hell can you manage a team in that way.
When i heard nigel had lost his job my anger turned to cortese the man is a disgrace.
As for the new bloke he was tapped up weeks ago massive coincidence nigel sacked pochettino in and new player.
Nigel thank you for the good times
Its been one hell of a ride and im sure others will agree you will go on acheive great things in the game

2. Publically say sorry to Nigel Adkins for misjudging what needed to be done.

It remains to be seen if this was a good or bad decision. Every manager knows what the rules are. I liked NA, but now we move on.
On the BBC football site they quoted him as looking at our squad for weeks.
Also linking us with Espanyol midfield playmaker Joan Verdu, apparently their best player and out of contract in the summer.
They are desperate for cash and we appear to have some left over!
I support the Saints! Still!
Do not have to like what Cortese has done, Nigel is a decent bloke. Not many of those in football.

But more seriously, a complete and utter shock. Well there is no going back now, so what do we have that NC did not see in NA. Does our new Manager have contacts that are useful to SFC? There must be more to it than "we now have a better man". There must, any ideas?
NA had two and half years to stamp his mark on the side and style of play and obviously did a good job bringing with it a lot of success.
He also seemed to be getting to grips with the PL along with most of the current squad who'd not been there before.
It'll be a hard act to follow and if he doesn't get the best out of the players we have to get the results we need and we end up going down......what then???
By all accounts he is a very good manager and does apparently have some good connections in European football.
As a Saints fan I'm worried that this could go t!ts up but also hoping he is a success and our players and fans give him a chance.
If he succeeds then NC's judgement will be revered. If he fails I'm afraid for our clubs immediate future and NC will be seen as responsible for gambling with our beloved club and f@cking it right up!

however it is not Pochettino's fault that Adkins was sacked. I was at the Chelsea game the other day and it was a fantastic result and when I left I was buzzing for Monday night.
There was 2 things we had that night that Chelsea didn't, 1. Nigel Adkins 2.A very strong 12th man. Chelsea's support was dire and you could see it in the players faces they were demotivated and deflated and constantly booing there manager!
We must get behind this new guy, if we're not its going to have a bad effect on the players. Lawrie McMenemy took over total control with us up the top ( towards) of the then League 1 we got relegated that year & I remember the fans hatred for that man.
I had a leather coat like his & was sworn at for wearing it.
we ended up with some great names coming here also all was forgiven in 1976 for the FA cup win over Man U.
really as Football fans try take a look at our defence in the Championship then look at said defence in the premiership?
Still not good enough was £7 million good money for basically an attacking player?
could we have bought a top rated goalie for that?
Didn't Nigel adkins say we don't need a Goalie?
if not a goalie could that money have bought us either a top rated defender or a top range midfield general?
to look back on it no matter how hard he tried was Adkins ready for the Premiership?
Take a long time to think about it look at it from all sides then comment.
The Independent supporters protesting?
Would they also have been protesting to get rid of Adkins if we were relegated?
You have to support the team but also remember this is a private company & football is an industry & you win keep the fans & sponsors or go Pompey & swindon's way & die is that what we want for this club?
Cortese seems to know what he's doing give him the benefit of the doubt & forget this stupid protest

is that all Cortese said- "he's looking at the future of the club" Given 95% of fans are unhappy suggests he's got this badly wrong

Nothing against the guy, of course, but if it takes him failing to keep us up for the Liebherr family to get rid of Cortese, then so be it.

They need to remember that their beef is with him. NOT the players, NOT the club. As such any protest in the stadium will be damaging to us all and the world's media will be releshing the story.
We should show everyone that we are " together as one" when it comes to our team!!!

I hope your fans can remember back in time.
