Redknapp: No-one could have done a better job than Nigel

First published in Saints News

Harry Redknapp admits he was “stunned” by the decision to sack Nigel Adkins as Saints boss.

Like many fans, the QPR boss is still shocked the news, which says it all coming from a football man of his experience.

“Even now, having had time to digest the news, it’s still quite shocking,” says the former Saints boss. “The most worrying aspect of all is that yet another English manager has bitten the dust.

“I can’t say the new man won’t be a success. I wish him well. But this is a bitter blow for English managers and English football.

“Yes there are a few British managers – Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Paul Lambert. But how many English? Six out of 20 clubs – it was seven until Friday. I have never met Nigel Adkins but I liked what I saw of him “Whenever I watched him on TV I thought he came across as honest, bubbly and positive. He’s an aspiring young coach who had come up the hard way and earned his place in the Premier League.

“I don’t know what Southampton want from their manager, particularly after the club has just come up from the Championship and bridged the biggest gulf in world football.

“He had turned things around with just two defeats in their last 12 Premier League games. So much so that I had begun to view Southampton as being clear of the relegation battle my team is facing.

“There’s not a manager around who could have done a better job than him. It will be interesting to watch the reaction from the crowd at Southampton tomorrow night when they play Everton.

“The other sad thing is that should Mauricio Pochettino win a couple of matches then within a month the fans will probably be chanting his name. It’s a fickle old game”

This Echo site must love NC - just look at the "clickfall" over the last few days. I notice that saints have also featured in trending Items on Twitter. Even if MP does win a couple of games, even if we end up chanting his name. Harry you are wrong, we will not froget NA ever, after all we did not forget you and the mess you left us?
Nor did we forget what Pardew did for us on his return with Newcastle.
Nor our youngsters who arsenal stole.
We have a ruthless and clever chairman, just hope he hasn't been too clever for his own good.
Because it is us and our club that will suffer if he has.
Sure I will cheer for NA tomorrow and I will cheer for the team. I won't slag Cortese or the new guy, we need to be together and focused on a win tomorrow night. Actually I hope it will be called off. We need the extra time to sort things out and for things to settle down.
A team going out who doesn't know the manager and vice versa does not bode well.

A lot of good, interesting and mixed opinions on here over the last couple of days which I’ve just tried to catch up on. The truest statement is that it has happened and we have to move on.
I poked fun at Chelski last week calling it Toxic Bridge. I truly hope the same thing doesn’t happen to St Marys.

Personally, I don’t agree with the decision, particularly the timing of it. Time will tell if Cortese got it right. I’ve listened to a few BBC podcasts and it doesn’t make good listening hearing pundits saying they now hope we go down.

A couple of random thoughts that formulated in my head since the news broke and reading your posts:

Newcastle went on an upward curve after replacing the well liked Chris Hughton with Alan Pardew.
Wolves were naive to sack Mick McCarthy while not already having anyone else lined up.
Fabio Capello’s lack of fluency in English compromised his ability to communicate clearly with the England squad and get the best out of them.
Golden boy Bankers taking high risk strategies do not always result in happy endings, just ask the owners of the deceased Barings Bank what they now think of their once golden boy Nick Leeson.

I hope the game goes ahead tomorrow and another 3 points to our beloved Saints.
Only 33 degrees Celsius here in Perth today, it was a little fresh in the pool but I survived :)

It is obvious that Cortese had this planned for some time but that would date the conspiracy back to the summer.

There does need to be a statement of some kind from the club. Otherwise we end up with the Pardew thing again, players wives etc.

Echo are running a story tomorrow featuring condemnation of Cortese (and very depressing Saints forecasts) from a dozen or more local dogs and a budgie and a white mouse. They ran out of people this morning.

All the dogs said the future looks "ruff"; the mice all had squeaky bottoms and, shown a photo of the new man, the budgie said "Who's a pretty boy then?" before pecking the nose on the photo aggressively (though I'm informed the Echo had stuck some millet seed to it).

Oh I'm so depressed and hard done by and feel so victimized. This is even worse than Diana's death and I wish my parents had never met.

I was going to kill myself with a huge aspirin overdose, but after three I felt quite a lot better.

There must be a village idiot somewhere in the area who is happy and prepared to give the Echo an quote to cheer us all up a bit.

Playing Guly in the side springs to mind, and taking Lambert etc. off when we were beating UTD.. Good luck to Adkins but we can only decide if this decision is genius or a right Goof in the weeks or months to come! COYR for tomorrow night,,

It's like they want there to be some sort of mass demnstration tomorrow night stirring up the fans like this so it gives them more drivel to print over the coming days & to milk the whole saga for all it's worth. It's wrong & it stinks. How about instead a bit more positivity ahead of tomorrow's game. We've got a new manager now, in case you've forgotten Mr Echo!

Absolutely ridiculous. I didn't think Adkins was doing a very good job of late, but didn't think he deserved the sack and hoped Saints would improve with more wins during the season. I can't understand why a complete stranger, who can't speak a word of English was appointed. It also looks as if he didn't do too well at his previous club either.

It is obvious that Cortese had this planned for some time but that would date the conspiracy back to the summer.

There does need to be a statement of some kind from the club. Otherwise we end up with the Pardew thing again, players wives etc.
I would imagine the club will get NA to sign a compromise agreement in return for his negotiated pay-off. Normally under these agreements both sides are effectively gagged - don't expect too much in the way of enlightenment with regard to what went on etc. In the world NC comes from believe me employee "life" expectancy can be very short. Clearly NC's expectations’ for this season were significantly higher than survival in the PL. If this was/is realistic given the limited experience in the squad is another matter even given the summer spending. From the customers (supporters) viewpoint probably best now to move on - after all we pay to watch football so lets hope the 11 that start tomorrow are up for it (with all due respect to NA it should be remembered to most players these days, managers come and go and hopefully they will be trying to impress the new guy).

With the abuse that Matt Le Tissier is getting on another page, if fans resort to that after what he has done for the club, over many years, I am not so sure that NA will not soon be forgotten.

he did really well at his previous club at first, how ever theyve got less money than the bums up the road, every transfer window he had to constantly sale all his best players develop the kids sale them as well. with all this he finished 10, 8, 12, in la liga and the begining of this season to november he gave 20 debuts, not the greatest recipe for success. im quite excited by him cant pronounce his name let alone spell it, i think hell do really really well. just another thought does yoshida speak english? rameriz? mayuka? coz nigel got his instructions through to them so why cant a spanish talking guy get his views through? what was c u n t face saying? i got bored after the 1st letter, i would rather suddam hussein came for dinner than read any thing that **** got to say

It is not that we don't appreciate what he did as a player. It is what he has got up to and said since he finished playing,

If he is going to slag off others publicly, people are entitled to voice their opinion and he should expect it.

I don't think Le Tiss gives a le Toss what others think any more than Cortese does. They are both similar in that respect.

Le Tiss is not beyond reproach, bit he is still a legend.

ok, now some of the hysteria has died down let's get sensible. We are all sad to see Nigel go, but although he played a huge part, which will not be forgotten, it was NC who engineered our escape from liquidation to where we are now! He has geat ambitions for our club and, while we may not always like the way he goes about it, we should continue to back him. If he walks due to the fans turning on him it would be a disaster and a disgrace after all he has done. So we need to be positive in our support against Everton.

Whilst fishing for Grayling on the river Test today I had time to mull it over.

My conclusion is that this is about confidence in Cortese's decision making ability. To replace Nigel with another coach hinges on that.

Some say he know's what he's doing and is very ambitious.

Others will point to the falling out with AP, the Echo and other media, Eddie Howe, ex players, not defending the court cases for non payment against Solent Interiors and ex members of staff, ticket office etc etc.

If we are to trust his decision making ability we can only judge it on what we see due to the secrecy level at SMS.

It's that simple - does he make good decisions?

I don't know. What I do know is that blind faith is foolhardy in the extreme, checks and balances are what avoid the melt down that happened at Pompey or in the wider world the banks. If you don't scrutinise then all you are doing is crossing your fingers and hoping.

Anyway, smashed my personal best Grayling so all is good here!

I agree that Cortese needs to adopt a more "open door" policy.

But the fact remains that our team will acheive more on the pitch with the full backing of the fans.

So you broke 2lbs then... nice one!

I hear they've got a scoop from the local Samaritans' branch. All the Samaritans there are Saints fans and they've been telling a flood of callers to go ahead and top themselves - as they intend to do as soon as their shift is over tonight.

Fortunately Bournemouth Samaritans are putting an extra shift on so they can take calls from the depressed Southampton Samaritans.

The Echo also has a dramatic story about a bloke who jumped off the Itchen Bridge and they are quoting him saying: "Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrr

My wife likes secrecy and she hates me for being too nosy - at least that's what she keeps writing in her diary.

My mate was challenged yesterday for fishing in a private lake. He said the notice was clearly headed "PRIVATE" so he didn't read it. He then told the warden that he wasn't fishing but just teaching his pet worm to swim.

Warrens I have to disagree with you on this one - I know you misunderstood J7's post, but that's not my point.

You say no Cortese equals no club, by which I assume you mean no owners. That's equating SFC to being an emotional decision. I have no problem with that. Other times you might post saying Cortese's decisions are purely hardnosed business ones. I have no problem with that either. But we can't mix and match. If this is a hard nosed business so be it - which means shareholders replace CEO's if they don't deliver just like CEO's replace managers if they don't deliver.

Level playing field is my point. Either it's pure business like Glazers and Manure or it's emoitional like Dave Whelan and Wigan.

Not aimed at you btw but the type of post that many make that mix the two up.

With the abuse that Matt Le Tissier is getting on another page, if fans resort to that after what he has done for the club, over many years, I am not so sure that NA will not soon be forgotten.
Selwyn froget...good work..
no true fan would criticise Le Tiss for basically having a go at a coward....You can love the money that NC manipulates but that does not make someone a "true" supporter. Matt is a "real" saints fan. And mindless happy-clappies can slag him off all they want, it just shows what has happened to the football club. Still the NC-homo-erotic-fan club can follow their ambitions and dream about the champions league funded by sky money.... its just a shame it may be in a half empty stadium, but then again it appears this is not a problem for the small niche club of supporters. After all they say that the "old" saints should be dead and buried and this glorious "new" saints with its bimbo programme sellers, stupid car park charges and Chairman who is too scared to face a press conference is the way forward..... fair play... lets hope the football is good to watch in the meantime... ;-)
so if i say i think matt is wrong i am a `happyclapper` if, prior to last week, i wanted NA to stay i am a happyclapper`, if i dont like what was done to NA but will support the new manager i am a `happyclapper`? so mgra what is it you want? it seems to me that you didnt want ML to take over the saints, you didnt want ML to install NC as chairman, you dont want NC to have ambition for the saints, you would rather fans stayed away than saints trying to win leagues and trophies?
i dont like what NC did to NA and i dont like the way he did it! and i hope NA goes on to succeed elsewhere. i hope that NC learns from the fans reaction to this that he might need to be a bit more open and explain his decisions. i hope the fasns get behind MP and dont boo him. most of all i hope i am able to support my team for years to come, if thats in L1 or the champions league. you may not like NC or his ways but dont start calling other fans `happyclappers` just because they dont agree with you, it makes you look very narrow minded and bitter.

I am a "happy clapper". I hear that there will be several thousand "happy clappers" going to the Wigan away game. We will be making the long and arduous journey there in order to "happy clap" our team to a win...and to help secure Premier League survival.

Aint nothing wrong with being a happy clapper imo.

nothing wrong with it at all bill. i just get annoyed with some who consider themselves `better fans` than others and do so by calling those fans `happyclappers`. i grew up to believe that shouting and cheering for your team was a good thing, and in fact the done thing. i find it strange that some fans dont like this.

I have read newspaper articles, listened to the radio reports, watched the football programmes on TV and surfed the web endlessly and I have become very angry with comments made about our football club by people who are full of their own prejudice and who are no more informed about matters leading up to Nigel’s sacking than I am.

Some of our fans need to face up to a few facts. They might like to believe that Cortese eats babies for breakfast, that he kicks puppies and beats his wife and whatever other exaggerated nonsense they may have read.

The facts are that Nicola Cortese saved our club from a fate every bit as bad or even worse than Pompey are facing. He encouraged Markus to buy the club and it is his drive and ambition that has seen us have the resources to get back into the Premier League and that includes appointing Nigel Adkins in the first place and he has the drive and ambition to take us even further.

Yes we are all upset by Nigel's dismissal and what the papers have said about how that was handled and we know the papers always tell you the absolute truth.

Nicola Cortese only cares about this football club. He does not care about you or me or Matt Le Tissier and his bitter views nor does he care about the Daily Mail or the Sun or the archaic ways of the old Pros on the telly who still think things are like they were when they played twenty years ago. He doesn't have the patience for the devious and mischievous ways the media works nor the usual games that other clubs, agents and players try on when dealing with transfers.

I have the utmost respect for Nigel and I will follow his career with great interest and wish him well and success with whatever club he may manage but I am a Saints fan and for me the success and continuation of Southampton Football club is all that matters.

We can sulk, we can hurl insults, wave white handkerchiefs, whinge away in cyberspace or we can do what Nigel always said:

"Draw a blue line under it all and move on."

So here is that blue line................

We can sulk, we can hurl insults, wave white handkerchiefs, whinge away in cyberspace or we can do what Nigel always said:

"Draw a blue line under it all and move on."

So here is that blue line................

... copied and pasted again but you get my drift ?
So blind faith? No scutinising? No accountability for the CEO?

That's what the skunts did.
The difference being that we DO have access to proper financial backing ...... I'll support until i have good reason not to , skunts ? ..... no comparison .

no its not blind faith seed, i have said before i dont like the way NC has handled the adkins sacking, i dont like the fact that he sacked him. NC needs to be made aware of the fact that fans didnt like that move, he needs to be aware that fans need some more info and openness, and unless he is dumb blind deaf and stupid he will know the results of his actions and the fans need to let him know again at the game tomorrow night. this though must not interfere with the team and the new manager and the ultimate goal of staying in the pre. as for him being accountable, he is, he is accountable to the liebherr family. they put the money into the club and so have the final word.

Agree but the change of personnel wasnt conducted in a very Saintly way and portrayed the club and Cortese in a bad light.

So here is that blue line................

... copied and pasted again but you get my drift ?
So blind faith? No scutinising? No accountability for the CEO?

That's what the skunts did.
The difference being that we DO have access to proper financial backing ...... I'll support until i have good reason not to , skunts ? ..... no comparison .
I mean't in the blind trust without question. It's a dangerous stance to take.
I don't honestly feel there is blind trust. We (as fans) are all on our guard after the actions taken on Friday.

Cortese (by his ruthless actions) has made a pledge that he will take our Club to another level. He is under scrutiny without doubt. The whole sports media (let alone us) will be on his case.

We can judge him at the end of the season imo. In the meantime... the 11 on the pitch have my FULL support.

"Football's can be a funny old game"
How many times have we all heard and said that.
I can remember sitting with a few mates before a game having a few beers and a asking each other who did we think would play, what will the score be, etc etc.
That includes the games this year, last year and the year before when NA was in charge.
I can remember Wigan, Fulham, Swansea, Norwich and Sunderland at home especially this season. I can remember these games because I like most of my mates and probably most of the Saints fans on here thought they were games we said were winnable and we a fancied our chances for 3 points from each.
We didn't win one of them.
Maybe we were guilty of "blind faith", over expectations and not scrutinising the opposition properly....or just guilty of being happy clappers tinged with over confidence and to much alcohol.
What I do know is when I came out of the ground after those games I felt as though we had f'cked up by not winning them and wondered why.
Was it bad luck, bad officials decisions, bad performances by our players or poor tactics, team selection and substitutions etc by the manager NA.
In hindsight I'd say all of the above but mainly the latter. Like most people although disappointed I was still right behind the manager and team as we were all getting used to the ups and downs of the PL and in a way thought we would soon turn the corner which we started to do.
The cup game against Chelski did p1ss me off only for the fact that we were hammered and live on TV but still kept the faith as I do now.
Blind Faith?.....probably more like blinkered faith.
No scrutinising?...plen
ty of "post mortems" and many a cross word exchanged even with mates after poor results.
Accountability for the CEO?..Probably not at the time as we as many did think he was or is the brains behind our dramatic turnaround and meteoric rise back to the PL but now realise he will get us to where he wants us to be and where many of the fans want us to be by any means possible.
I'm a Saints fan, not an NC fan but if NC has Saints interests at the top of his agenda and if the gamble with a new manager pays off then he'll do for me. If it doesn't he will then be scrutinised by one and all in the football world but mostly by us the fans.
COYR 3-1 win on Monday will be a step in the right direction

I don't know if his decisions are right or wrong, only time will tell. Accountability in any business or activity is key. Saying he is accountable to the Liebherrs is well and good, but what if the only person speaking to them was Cortese? They might only get one perspective. Bit like Barings Bank asking Nick Leeson about Nick Leesons trading...

Anyway, let's move on. Some teams picked up points yesterday so we really need something tomorrow night, particularly bearing in mind the next two games. Big game made even bigger now.

That's entirely my point about accountability. It means being accountable for your decisions - which might be a promotion or pay rise or might be the sack. I seriously hope we are midtable and getting ready to push on, awesome. God forbid we collapse and end up bottom - Cortese has to go. I do admire his single mindedness and think he might succeed.

I hope and pray we do well but history shows that clubs who keep managers do well, we are on our 3rd already.

True we have time and I'd be surprised if we didn't bring in a couple more in this window which is why I mentioned the mid table finish.
The type of person who may have already sited some players to bring in is someone who has been given a budget and time for forward planning to enable him to hit the ground running and strengthen an already solid foundation without undoing the hard work that's been done over the last 3 years or so.
That sounds to me like someone who is very astute and wants to succeed rather than fail....namely Nicola Cortese.

So here is that blue line................

... copied and pasted again but you get my drift ?
Food post.. NC has delivered so far, and has a good chance of pulling this off.

It would be much better if he could work on his timing and start communicating better with the fans though.

Why does appointing a failure who can't speak English make Cortese clever?

I like you and your posts but widen the view on this one.

Trouble is Seed it is all mixed up because unlike buying a loaf of bread or paying the gas bill...owning and controlling a football club is both commercial and personal...

Nobody gets emotional about most commercial transaction but here feelings are in the mix...

doing the best for the club can offend many people..

Personally I think the hostility would have been greatly reduced if a) we had not been promoted or b) in the bottom 3 rather than above it..decent bloke or not..

Our purported decency is tempered by good results overall...without them the holier than thou brigade would be the minority..

You missed a VERY SIGNIFICANT manouvre that says a whole lot more:

e him or loave him...it's his ball at the moment, and he can go home when he wants to.
Thank you Mr Adkins, forever a Saint.
Didn't use me natty dread then...
"LOATHE him" -maybe that kneaded saying again...forgive the floury prose...dough!

Anyway, smashed my personal best Grayling so all is good here![/p][/quote]You missed a VERY SIGNIFICANT manouvre that says a whole lot more: NO red and white stripes and a white shirt at Home.. because he can...remember...lov e him or loave him...it's his ball at the moment, and he can go home when he wants to.
