Pochettino praises Saints fans

Daily Echo: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

New Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino thanked both his players and the fans for their support after tonight’s goalless draw with Everton.

Saints produced an impressive display on their way to a point in the Argentine’s first game in charge after replacing Nigel Adkins following his controversial sacking last week.

While Adkins’ name was sung loudly by the supporters, the team and Pochettino were also given plenty of backing.

Speaking through a translator, the manager said: “I just want to thank the players for the three days that they’ve been working with me. They’ve done very well today and in these three days.

“I also want to thank the supporters. They have been very kind with me and the reception has been amazing.

“I think tonight we’ve done very well. We’ve created at least seven good chances to score.

“The only shame was that we didn’t score any goals. We created a lot of chances, and were facing a very good side in Everton. They’re fifth in the league, I believe.

“So I think the team deserves a lot of credit. We did suffer a bit more in the second half, but again we were creating chances, and we just needed that bit more luck.”

That game was a credit to Nigel's memory, and a credit to the Saints fans; we were behind the team all the time, giving a few choruses for Nigel but not so as to disrupt the team, and giving the new guy a good reception. I'm not proud of the way our chairman acts, but I'm proud of us - just a shame we couldn't get three points, too, but we were the better side and, had Ramirez not gone off, I think we would have won in the end. But a good base for the rest of the season, I think.

Thanks again, Nigel, for everything.

Proud of the fans tonight. Didn't expect anything else but nice to show the world what we stand for. Hope Nigel heard us.

Proud of Pochettino too. Must have been nerves galore but hope he feels at home here. He looks eager to learn the language too.

Finally, proud of the team.Really tough game and the first half especially was fantastic. Should have scored 3 and not many teams will be able to do that to Everton.

Futures still bright.

Totally agree. Nigel has built a solid base and we now need to build on it. A bit more pace up front to support Ricky when Gaston is not there would be good. Glad to dee Boruc coming on as a reliable keeper that brings confidence in and to the back four.

I am absolutely proud of the supporters tonight, sensible and enthusiastic, and celebrated Nigel Adkins in the best way possible. The only negative was the lack of a message in the Programme from Cortese, poor form in my view, if he wants to win the fans respect he has to begin by communicating if he can. 0 0 was a fair result, could have been ours had we finished better. Some players visibly tired in the second half, fitness needs to be addressed. Boruc was my MoM, Howard was theirs!

Well done Saints fans. We really are the best!

A good performance tonight. I thought Guly had a good game but Ramirez seems unable to last 90 minutes. Rodriguez might also have done better in the 20 minutes or so he was given with fresh legs.

Morgan (Sky's MOTM) and Cork did their usual double act as defensive midfielders. They are becoming a good pairing.

Ricky does trouble defence but it needs a strong support attacker to take advantage.

A good start for the new manager whom we must continue to give our full backing.

Onwards and upwards,

A desperate attempt by you to make the facts fot your theory but, unless there were hundreds of people who by sheer coincidence sit together who all by some miracle happened not to come, you're just plain wrong.

The empty seats were in all the areas you'd expect in a game that simply didn't sell out. The corner between Chapel and Itchen, some seats directly behind the goal and the usual bunches of seats in the Itchen.

Shame you're going to miss the rest of the season from the season ticket seat you don't actually have in your little fantasy world...

I thought we played very well tonight, a few empty seats, which was understandable, but lets hope that was the only time that this happens, but tactics were spot on, spider was immense in the middle, and a little bit more luck in front of goal and we would be walking away with three points. Very disappointed with the lack of recognition for Nigel in the match day programme, another kick in the teeth from our spineless chairman. His business ethics may be spot on, but man management skills are bloo** aweful. But i am more optimistic on our survival chances after tonight, but deep down, that performance was for Adkins.

I always liked to think so, but evidence isn't looking good, he sat in the stands on his own, is he becoming some kind of a recluse or is there some sort of a mental instability problem perhaps, something is definitely not right in that department. If he was to let his guard down a bit and come out and comunicate with us, I would be happy to thank him for what he has done in the past, but I worry for him, I really do.

His business ethics may be spot on, but man management skills are bloo** aweful. But i am more optimistic on our survival chances after tonight, but deep down, that performance was for Adkins.
Last comparable home game - midweek in a working week was against Norwich; attendance 29,325. Tonight's attendance 28,359 with plenty of empty space in the Everton section.

It is the end of month when all the Xmas bills come in, it was freezin and some roads in and out of Hampshire are still tricky.

The fans who were there tonight were absolutely brilliant,, for many reasons that you probably cant even fathom.

Good first half against a well organised and hard working Everton side. If we'd have taken one of the many chances in the fist half especially we'd have 3 points on the board.
Great defensive display, great goalkeeping diplay, great support, great to be a Saint.
Well done MO PO and the lads and fans

what a c0ck.

Well played lads. Pity we couldn't put the game to bed 1st half.

Was proud of Guly tonight, he ran his socks off.

Jack and Spider solid.

Just need Ads back now.

Just wish Boruc was a little more accurate with his kicking, mind you he did make a couple of excellent saves,

Safety this season Europe next? What do rou reckon?

That game was a credit to Nigel's memory, and a credit to the Saints fans; we were behind the team all the time, giving a few choruses for Nigel but not so as to disrupt the team, and giving the new guy a good reception. I'm not proud of the way our chairman acts, but I'm proud of us - just a shame we couldn't get three points, too, but we were the better side and, had Ramirez not gone off, I think we would have won in the end. But a good base for the rest of the season, I think.

Thanks again, Nigel, for everything.
Do you really think Cortese is remotely concerned about fans respect?
I thought we looked great first half, the high tempo full pitch pressing reminded me of a certain Catalan side. I'm sure in the ensuing weeks relentless doggies will be the order of the day to improve our fitness so we can do it for 90 mins.
Great support from the greatest fans of the only true top flight club on the south coast
It's tough at the top! I'm sure he was relieved at the nature of the performance and the attitude of the fans.
He just strikes me as one of those cold, autocratic, driven CEOs that do not let a shred of emotion affect their approach or demeanour when it comes to business; and let's not forget, Southampton FC is his business, but it's our club.

Well organised clean sheet and good team play pressing forward. The concentration and effort seemed sharper - I'd actually say it looked like Saints got new manager syndrome for once.. with mopo allegedly looking at the likes of Lucas Biglio for the midfield thngs could end well for Saints.. better than we hoped.

Not a Pompey fan, that's for sure! Just live local to you lot. I personally think Nicola will / is ruining your club. Big Lawrie Mac seems to agree, shame you lot were once a proper club where the managers were respected and the chairman didn't pick the team!

Well you know what Nigel always said, draw the blue line under it and move on, we have moved on, you just worry about getting back into the Premier so that we have another Southern team to compete with, not quite the same as our proper local derby but we all know that isn't going to happen soon....

Brighton and I haven't got any problems with Saints before the way you have treated Adkins. I believe his name wasn't even mentioned in the programme? Shows what a vile man Corteseis IMHO!
Well you know what Nigel always said, draw the blue line under it and move on, we have moved on, you just worry about getting back into the Premier so that we have another Southern team to compete with, not quite the same as our proper local derby but we all know that isn't going to happen soon....
We've never been in the Premier and you may have to wait a couple of seasons yet for mighty seagulls to grace the top league!
So you don't think we are coming down to meet you then, that's progress anyhow.
Would hope not, will depend how the new guy works out!

I agree Felleini is a hard working player and he suits the direct long ball game Everton play . I thougt Everton are another Stoke city really . Long direct balls into danger areas with big front men . Not the Southampton way which is going to the next level . There were improvements to the way Saints played already last night especially Gully . Let's face it Adkins took us as far as he could really , this new manager will take us onwards and upwards . Very impressed with last nights performance .

But a good base for the rest of the season, I think.

Thanks again, Nigel, for everything.
