Lambert disappointed not to beat Everton
5:00am Tuesday 22nd January 2013 in Saints News
RICKIE LAMBERT
Rickie Lambert, a Liverpool fan as a schoolboy, admitted he was disappointed not to have capped off a threatening display with a goal against Everton.
“It was a good point, but we’re disappointed not to get the three, especially first half,” he said. “We played some really good football and I should have put at least one away, maybe two, so I’m disappointed personally I haven’t put one in the back of the net.
“But it’s well played again and defensively we were solid I thought.”
After an eventful few days at St Mary’s, Lambert admitted the players had been glad to get back to action last night.
“A footballer’s place is on the pitch,” he said. “Once you’re on there you forget about everything else and that’s what we’ve done. “We tried to get a win, it wasn’t to be, but it was a good performance.”

That was a smashing performance from you which we all enjoyed. Well done and bloody hard luck for getting one in. You had their defence bricking it. Our New Big R you are. Get in there son.
I can't remember when we created at a team like that in such a methodical manner and you led from the front with a true captains effort.
Cheers and good luck to you for the rest of the season.

For me RL is at the moment the best english striker in the country and deserves to wear three lions on his chest, he performs week in and week out, he has determination, persistance and all the abilty to be a great england striker. If they made a Rickie Lambert trump card it would be gold, 10 for shooting, 10 for free kicks, 10 for holding the ball up, 8 for passing. I think RL is miles better then Andy Carrol, on paper and on the field. I am proud to be a Saint today and I go to work with my head held high, thankyou for the performance last night boys and hats off to the fans that although concerned about the current debacle stood tall and supported the team 100%.

Having said all that Gary Neville thought we were excellent in the first half - but then spoilt it by saying Everton never got started! He redeemed himself by saying we didn't let them.
Is that the best we have seen of Ramirez? Guly seemed to thrive in his role last night. Rickie was unlucky on at least 3 occassions - on another night he would have got a hat-trick!
But for some woeful finishing and the heroics of Boruc in the 2nd half it could have been very different.
As Slugger said in another thread - some player that Fellaini! He terrorised our defence in the air - and not many people out muscle Schneiderlin (who I thought ws immense again alongside Cork).
So with the new centre half, and Adam and Jose back fit - I think we will have more than enough to stay up! Wins at Wigan and Newcastle would be great - what about a point at United next week?
As for all the nonsense about protesting, it never happened. I must admit no mention of Nigel in the programme seems a bit odd - but I would imagine the new Manager will rectify that when he starts doing a piece. After all his current team is Nigel's legacy!
A few days off now for the team to take on MoPo's ways - by the way has Yoshida got better and better? He looks as solid as a rock to me - but sometimes his positional play leaves us a bit exposed - and he is very good a getting in the last gasp clearance. Only trouble is sometimes he puts us in more trouble than if he left it!

It might be interesting to see how quickly any new signings can get a place in the team.
I like it when commentators who have an anti saints bias are prone to mumble about a poor game when it is obvious that saints are outplaying their expected roll.
Big one coming at Manure, I hope the trip to Spain is minus tummy bugs, re punch, get well soon.

If MP intends to continue with a long ball, high ball vertical football strategy there will be plenty of goals to come from Lambert.Using those tactics for the rest of the season a Billy Sharp type poacher would be great to have around to feed on the knockdowns.

RICKIE is right to be disappointed as Everton were their for the taking and we could had the WIN if we had taken all our chances first half.
We have had the Goalkeeper debate and we have watched Artur Botac step up to the Challenge.
We have seen the Team at their fighting best at CHELSEA AWAY.
We know we have TOP SUPPORTERS AT THE MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON - there was only a handful of Independents waving their rags last night.
The Times and the Sun in the Sports Section are full of news about last night's game and our Supporters.
MP is still finding his feet and needs more passion to generate a higher temp and passion among the Players.
He also needs to resolve whether a point is good enough in games or whether to push the TEAM ON TO VICTORY.
We learnt more about GASTON last night that he is still developing as a Player (off with cramp ? ) and needs to be more ROBUST in his keeping of the Ball.
IMPRESSED with the midfield battle last night and the tenacious tackling.
If we have the finances we need another Strike / Goalscoring Option.

His runs in the first half made the Everton defence look sh!t. Time and again the defenders went into the tackle and were left looking at nothing more than Punch's skid mark on the turf.
And did you notice, whenever Punch crossed the ball, even the tallest Everton defenders seemed to miss it -and the goallie was strangely indecisive too.
Punch's new war cry - that sort of long winded babbly gurgly noise (as if he was stepping on a duck) - also seemed to intimidate them.
Rickie the man of the match for me - but Punch was No2 for sure.

Our fullbacks have to be the envy of the whole league, we have depth in the middle of defence and Gaston and Punch offered the guile, but not only that, both tracked back!
And I think St Retford mentioned MPs shoes... Class!
Next game is Man U, and who knows what we could do, another must see game!
