Southampton have £10.2m bid accepted for Inter Milan's Coutinho
5:55pm Thursday 24th January 2013 in Saints News
Saints have Coutinho bid accepted
SAINTS have had a £10.2m bid for Brazilian playmaker Phillipe Coutinho accepted - but are waiting to see if Liverpool will match the offer.
The Italian giants are understood to have accepted Saints' bid for the 20-year-old, who has played under Mauricio Pochettino on loan at Espanyol, which is hoped will prove a decisive factor in landing the playmaker.
As reported earlier, it is Liverpool who have so far been closest to prising him away from the San Siro.
The Reds have been in discussions with Inter over a possible move for the player this month.
Although they have had an £8m offer turned down, it has been suggested that they would be willing to return with an improved bid.
Capped once by his country, Coutinho has started just three Serie A games so far this season.
THe youngster has shown no great desire to leave Inter, having already stated his desire to stay with the Italian giants.
However, a strong personal offer from Saints or Liverpool could potentially persuade him to move.

The fundamental thing that would attract him to us is the fact he's worked well under our manager before.
Lets just hope he signs up at st Mary's next week!

Would be nice to get a couple of quality signings in. However all the reports and pictures I'm seeing indicate that MP is getting on really well with the team and the players look really happy, so no story here. Perhaps if this week’s stint away helps everyone personally play 9.1% better then that’s a 100% better team performance on the day. Crikey 4-0 win at old Trafford next week. COYR’s

But who would make way?
I would prefer a fast, I mean fast and good, winger so we can turn things with impact.
Steve doesn't quite do it at this level as he showed against Everton.
MP has looked at the first choices already with an unchanged team and will know who is going and who is staying. Not immediately but in the summer. I expect the clear out to be quite dramatic and there will be tears at tea time from some!

He has been selected for his national side once, but not again.
He can't get in the team at his current club.
Telegraph this morning reports that we have agreed the fee with Milan, but he does not want to come here, despite the personal connection with our new manager. He thinks that Liverpool are a better and bigger club.
No thanks.

Doesn't mean he won't
Check gossip BBC and see the one by telegraph saying he doesn't want to come to St Marys and if he moved would prefer Liverpool.
How accurate this is who knows. The bid was accepted apparently by the club yesterday, it seems to be held up on the player's own preferences.
Until its on OS it has not happened.
Apparently we have offered the above and Liverpool have gone from 6-8 mil at present.

He could be a possible replacement for Puncheon if he doesn't renew his contract. Otherwise, the potential to swap between Coutinho, Ramirez, Puncheon and Lallana is just amazing.
I'm not sure where this statement that he doesn't want to join us has come from, I can't find the source. It wouldn't surprise me if it came out of Liverpool to try and put us off.
If we've had a bid accepted, get Cortese to speak to him, sell him the vision, and he won't want to go anywhere else. If I was him, I'd question how much Liverpool want him, as they seem to be bidding less than required and unwilling to pay more.

I was thinking about the turmoil of the last 7-days and I came to this conclusion.
Didn't like the manner Adkins was dismissed - it came as a total shock. I was for Adkins seeing the season out and go from there. I was enjoying the football and the commitment of most of the staff.
The outcry of last week has subsided a bit now. Still not happy with the way it all came about but I have moved on.
You probably all remember my feelings towards a certain Chairman who to my mind was taking us nowhere, selling all our young talent, replacing managers almost as often as somepeople change their underpants. I was adamant he had to go - and like many fans I feel the stance many took finally was the straw that broke the camels back. Closing the Itchen Blocks 1, 2 and 3 was a vindictive backwards way of getting to the supporters who put the club first.
I don't have any of those feelings towards our current Chairman. He may not be a very nice man (according to the legend) but I don't hate him with the passion I had for the other person. Can't say I like him - I have never (or even likely to ever) meet the man. I suspect like all businessmen he's a real charmer to some - and those who stand in his way of achieving his goals, a right b*stard!
I don't know where this will all end. It could go like it did for Risdale at Leeds (living the dream) and off the back of season ticket sales and years in Europe predicted take out loans. It could all end up with us living outside our means and tumbling down the leagues again. Then again why be so negative? We could go on and be one of the most successful British clubs in Europe.
Whatever happens I will still be a follower, a fan, but not necessarily a financial supporter.
So for all those out there still enraged by the decision to replace Adkins - loyalty is a luxury in business. If your not good enough for the task ahead you're gone. Not saying this was the case with Adkins as he was never given a season to prove himself. As for the new guy Pochettino - time will tell. I liked the first half against Everton. It made me excited watching again. As a fan that's all I want. I'm not a glory hunter - I'd hate to be dispised like Man U fans for having a successful team.

The points is, everyone, including Kitty (!!) we are Saints' supporters, and there is nothing like the feeling when Saints have done it all right.
I just loved the first half against Everton. In many ways, for me at least, it reminded me of the times when Ron Davies and George O'Brien were going flat out with Terry Paine et al. At times all those years ago, our team seemed unstoppable on those days when they flew out of th traps.
Let's hope that Mauricio can get us going full pelt at Old Trafford. But I nay be dreaming, because Van Persie really is something else and can ruin anyone's dream - very quickly.

Madness in my opinion. Ramirez, yes good player and should improve, but he was £12 million, in a similar bracket and I'd say he's not in the top five or six first names on the team sheet at best.
In fact, he'd be third in my list of our attacking midfielders, and we only have three of real quality.
Not slagging the guy - he's a good player and getting better - but this is the last area I would be strengthening.
Simple equation: we have no problem scoring, ever, we possibly concede too many goals if anything. Stop conceding goals = win most of your games.
If we get world class defenders now and strengthen options up front in the summer then we really might be looking to the top 10 and up.

The Adkins affair was a bit like an earthquake in San Fransisco really, surprising when it happened but always inevitable (even Nigel himself would say it).
Timing?... Well Pardew was sacked after a win and during a transfer window too so no surprise there either.
What has shocked and enraged me is the vitriol and abuse dished out to Cortese.
Out of curiosity I went to the pages and comments from when Pardew was sacked. Very interesting! Some of the views were a follows:
He knows nothing about football or running a football club.
He is Rupert Lowe in disguise.
He is here for the money and going to kill our club.
He is turning our club into the laughing stock of the football league.
Another article said it was a terrible decision, particularly the timing by guess who? .... Matt Le Tissier.
No-one is laughing at us now though are they? It was an inspirational decision and has put us back where we belong, targeting transfers we could never have dreamed of!
Many have said this week that they are ashamed to be Saints fans. Well I'm ashamed of them! They have no respect, no dignity and act like spoilt petulant children.
To them I say Cortese has replaced our old Ford Fiesta with a Jaguar, next year he hopes to replace that with an Aston, ultmately he wants a Bugatti. Doant moan 'cos you don't like the wheels!
Show some gratitude and enjoy the ride!

I may be wrong but I don't see too many deals being done by us. I think MP will be working with the current job. Can just see the new Echo thread in a week's time: "Failed Transfer Targets Fail to Materialise". Not being negative - just think the Echo are jumping on the bandwagon.
This won't happen. .. why woud they "agree" a price if its not a done deal ? .. It's an auction with agents sounding out how much we are prepared to pay then just driving up the price. The player wants to go to Liverpool .. enough said..

So much for the reports of Pochettino focusing on the Spanish league for players. He's Argentinian and playing in Italy! I doubt it will come off anyway.

My season ticket for the last 15 years proves that.......and as for the other numpty, yeah good point we will sign him and wack him on the bench then?? Have either of you actually watched him play? I suggest you do. And I don't mean 30 second clips on YouTube. Actually watch a couple of matches he plays in. As far as I'm concerned Liverpool can have him. Alright player but not worth more that 7m max IMO. But then what do I know....

So IF this is true who are we going to drop then? Lambert? Lallana? Ramirez? Puncheon? We cant buy a player for 10million and not play them. Easy to link saints with ex espanyol players now. Lazy Journalism.

Surely a couple of £5 mil defenders is what we should be looking to buy not some kid who apparently has flashes of brilliance.
We clearly need defensive cover or, if Cortese really sees us in Europe next season, a top international keeper.
Not as sexy, but if our current midfield, wingbacks and attack get freedom with confidence in our defence, we will destroy teams.

This has been a strange week in many ways. The sacking of the competent Adkins and the arrival Pochettino is indicative of a wider business strategy. The Premiership is an international league, in a worldwide shopwindow. The emphasis appears to be on attracting support and commerce from overseas, as well as the UK. Adkins did not have the immediate persona to follow this strategy. As a season ticket holder I will have to get used to supporting a team with few roots in my town of birth. One that places business above people, and one that places honest endeavour secondary in importance to results. The stadium will need expanding and possibly relocating. And I will need to come to terms with watching a facade playing under the banner of Southampton. Come on you red and whites!

Hard to believe when you read all the stuff on here that, this weekend two years ago, we lost 2-0 at Tranmere in front of a 5,500 crowd.
Who would have dared to dream it?

In order to reach the next level our team will have to change and evolve. If we reach Markus dream of Champions League I can assure you Lambert and Puncheon will not be in that team regardless of how well they are playing now and how much we love them.
