Echo, why do you do this? Why have a headline "deal sealed", when the story clearly says that the deal hasn't been sealed at all, but that a bid has been accepted. Why invite the obvious criticisms of lazy journalism? Why have such sensationalist headlines, when anyone reading only a couple of sentences further can see that the headline is innacurate? It's not like this is a rare occurance; you are ALWAYS doing it, and it (a) annoys the hell out of your readers, (b) makes you look stupid, (c) makes people doubt your truthfulness, which surely is the kiss of death for any newspaper, and (d) makes no sense when you don't have to capture an audience; the very fact that we are here, on your website, almost ensures we are gong to read the story, whatever he headline.

Reading the southern echo a headline like 'deal sealed' indicates to Southampton. Stupid headline. I'm sure I coutinho was coming to Southampton the Liverpool tag wouldn't consider that 'deal sealed' but maybe 'deal off'.

Regardless of getting him or not I am excited to be competing with Liverpool in key signings.

The 8.5mil story is all over the BBC so don't knock the Echo on this one.

There were a zillion threads touting different numbers and theories from Italy and England but BBC are saying the lad wanted to go to Liverpool (case of bigclubitysis).

Makes you wonder though:

Now that it looks as if we are to miss out on Coutinho with no obvious replacement target in sight it should now be patently obvious why Saints had to sack Adkins an unknown quantity in European football, My concern remains whether for all his ambition Cortese can persuade enough top players to join the Southampton revolution to get the club into the top four or five in the league and overturn the current status quo. I dont envy him his task as yet again another window passes by with inadequate progress being made. Gutted,

So Coutinho prefers to go to Liverpool. I don't have a problem with that - the last thing we need is a player who would rather be somewhere else. I simply wish him well in his new Club.

Although the failure to attract him here will be a bit of a confidence killer for our management team, it's not the end of the world. There will be other worthy targets to go for who truly want to be Saints - much better value than a half hearted player. I'm sure NC and MP have there eyes on suitable targets!

My only concern is that NC and MP can get fresh players to sign up before Thursday's deadline. We shall have to keep our fingers crossed.

Whether I like the Echo or not is irrelevant; I don't know any other Saints sites, or forums, so if I want to read about Saints or talk about them, or hear what fans who are able to go to games say, I don't have much choice. If there were a viable alternative, believe me, I would choose it - but since there isn't, it makes perfect sense to suggest to their staff ways to improve their journalism.

I was listening to a programme on Radio 4, which featured a young girl, a journalism student at Bournemouth University, who was forced to offer her services for free at the Echo. These sorts of unpaid internships are relied upon more and more, and seen as the only route into the profession

These are no longer the days of Bob Brunskill.

As for Nigel Adkins, he is still rated by most saints fans and even by Mr Cortese, but the decision was made for the on-going future of the club. The fans must live with it and move on.
