Reading boss Brian McDermott hits out over sacking of Nigel Adkins

Brian McDermott
Reading manager Brian McDermott has criticised Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese over the sacking of Nigel Adkins.
Adkins led Saints to two successive promotions and had guided the club out of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone recently, but he was fired nine days ago and replaced by Mauricio Pochettino.
Having also taken his team up to the top flight last summer, McDermott knows how difficult managing a newly-promoted side can be.
The Royals boss, like Adkins, endured a tricky start to the season, but as has been the case with Saints, Reading have now seemingly turned a corner following an improvement in form.
McDermott has been thankful that the Reading owner Anton Zingarevich has kept faith with him through the club's rocky period and poured scorn on Cortese's treatment of Adkins, whose name was absent from Southampton's matchday programme for Pochettino's first game in charge against Everton.
''What I thought was sad was what Nigel Adkins has done for Southampton wasn't even mentioned in that programme at the Everton game. Let's have a bit of respect. That's not right,'' the Reading manager said.
''That's not right and proper. What he has done for that club has been phenomenal.
''What I find fascinating about owners is that managers who lose games start to learn. They pick up a few points. Then they are sacked. It doesn't make any sense to me.
''For me, you learn from experience. Nigel struggled at the start of the season. Then he loses two games in 12 and gets the sack.
''It doesn't seem like the right thing to do.''
McDermott has grown close to Adkins over the last few years and he hopes the former Scunthorpe boss gets another shot at the big time soon.
''Nigel has earned the right to do so,'' McDermott added.
''No one can pick and choose their jobs in management - but he has been a fantastic manager at Scunthorpe and Southampton.''

Being anti Cortese it is aimed at undermining the stability of the club.
The very thing Cortese and our owners have tried to give it.
The Echo is not user friendly to Saints.
It shows nothing positive from MP's interview yesterday which was a good one.
It takes snippets form Cortese's but is not positive.
Its not reporting news.
News is Saints have signed someone, Saints training in Barca. Saints face M Utd what influence will have MP had on the team by then.
All we see are articles aimed at trying to push Cortese and our owners out.
You know there are some great pictures on the gallery of Saints in barca and you know what the players are relaxed and laughing and joking with the new training staff and manager as well as amongst themselves.
I was sad to see NA go, but he has gone and we have to move on.
As for this article this was probably said at the time, not weeks after the event and shows the petty vindictive face of the echo towards our club.

The first thing you say is that you aren't in a position to comment and then you do exactly that.....
Let me enlighten you.
The DE is banned from St Mary's.
The DE do not support Cortese
The DE think they are a national red top rather than a local rag (delusions of grandeur)
All of these stories you can see are a poor attempt by the DE to stir up some sort of rubbish and create off field drama.
All of the regular contributors on here realise this and are saying so.
None of us like the manner of Nigel's dismissal. But we are not in a position to actually do anything about it. So most of us have moved on since there is nothing to be done.
consider this: Have any of the continued protests by the Chelsea fans brought back Di Matteo? no. the only result of those protests has been Chelsea's poor form at home.
As fans of this great club we don't want the lads on the pitch to perform poorly since, as you should know being a fan yourself, Saints are not safe yet.
So please, look at what is actually happening here before having a go at your fellow Saints fans.

But even though I like him it doesn't mean I can't criticise him. If you have a manager that is given 4 years (AP had 1) to get you to the Prem and he does it in 2 he deserves a note of thanks in the programme after you've replaced him.
McDermott is not saying anything controversial here. Had we been rooted to the bottom and not looking like scoring a goal then that's fair enough but knocking the ball around nicely and goals from all over the park (not just RL) Nigel deserved a bit of recognision.
It makes no difference now my view on what he did so I move on. But it still irritates me that someone who did so much for Southampton FC was shown the door in such circumstances without a decent word said about him - embarrassing and NC should look at the man in the mirror from time to time.

As for the timing of Nigels departure?
do you look to grow your business when things are bad or when things are good?
Nigel's sacking was simply to give the new guy a solid grounding so he could hit the ground running and build for the future.
You put someone new in a bad situation it could get a lot worse.
Reading fans will see that soon when they are bottom, McDermott gets sacked and they bring in Mark Hughes to save them from the drop!

However, if as Gaz says, the Echo would 'love the ban to be lifted', why do they continually print utter crud such as this article?
Don't get me started on the 'it makes us read and comment' nonsense. I read these threads for the news and enjoy reading and responding to what people write. I'd be here just as much if the DE stuck to being a balanced, well-researched and well-written local newspaper.

A further piece of Cortese's interview has been put out on Sky. He said the decision to hange managers was not based on one moment but on an accumulation of events. He said he is close to the team and he sensed that they felt they weren't progressing and he wanted to see the way open for academy lads to progress as he wants to keep the best of them.

Because of Cortese, the echo has no affiliation with SFC and are free to print what they want.

They have asked for the ban to be lifted but Dear Leader has ignored them.
When the nationals ridiculed him over the silly photographer ban he backed down and did a u-turn.
Believe me, the echo would love the ban to be lifted.
In the meantime they report any other publications, negative or positive and as the rest of football view the chairman as a nasty individual I'm afraid negative pieces will continue.
However, if as Gaz says, the Echo would 'love the ban to be lifted', why do they continually print utter crud such as this article?
Don't get me started on the 'it makes us read and comment' nonsense. I read these threads for the news and enjoy reading and responding to what people write. I'd be here just as much if the DE stuck to being a balanced, well-researched and well-written local newspaper.
