Mauricio Pochettino was right not to spend money for Southampton on transfer deadline day, says Adam Leitch
8:18am Friday 1st February 2013 in Saints News
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Mauricio Pochettino
As Saints fans wake up the morning after transfer deadline day, things look pretty much exactly the same at their club as they were before – and why not?
Mauricio Pochettino has had that vital away time to assess his new squad in Barcelona and has clearly come to the conclusion he has what he requires to keep Saints up.
In truth, whatever you may think about whether that will or won’t happen, his logic is understandable.
Saints have strength in depth in their squad.
There was no need whatsoever to waste money on a player to merely provide cover for a position as they have at least two options for every role.
It could be argued that in a few of them the quality would slide slightly if the first choice was ruled out for whatever reason, but even the biggest clubs with the most cash struggle to counter that problem.
Saints had to get at least one centre half in this window, and they did in Vegard Forren.
The only reason for Pochettino to have dipped into the transfer market yesterday was if he could sign somebody that would instantly improve the Saints first team.
And for that to happen it would almost certainly have meant spending a lot of cash, including an inflated January transfer window fee of course, and nudging out a player who has done well for the club.
Where exactly would you do that?
Some fans were hoping for a goalkeeper, but no club needs four first choice stoppers.
In defence the Forren signing gives them strength, and in midfield there are a plethora of options.
Most of the players to have been linked with Saints have been attacking talents.
Sign one of those and you are looking at leaving out two of Adam Lallana, Gaston Ramirez, Jason Puncheon and Jay Rodriguez.
Even the back up for the man you take for granted as always being there, Rickie Lambert, is reasonable with Rodriguez able to slot in as well as Emmanuel Mayuka, Guly and Tadanari Lee.
Quite simply, it was a window where Saints didn’t really need to splash the cash.
They have enjoyed an upturn in form leading into the window which meant there was little pressure to spend.
They are the team that have been looking like pulling further away from the drop zone.
There was no need for them to panic buy half a new team, or splash out on a player or two in the desperate hope they prove to be the difference between success and failure come the final reckoning.
What we will never know, of course, is whether there was money to spend.
There was obviously interest in Philippe Coutinho but Inter Milan have cooled talk that a formal bid was actually offered by Saints.
It seems more likely it was informal talks surrounding a fee.
There has been a theory that any spending in the January window would be a good indicator of Saints’ finances, but that isn’t really the case.
When that theory first started coming together following the mysterious, largely unquestioned and unexplained document lodged with Companies House some months ago, there was a sense of worry.
Many thought with the team struggling at that stage and Saints seemingly going to be in a position where they needed considerable January strengthening the amount spent, or not, would be an accurate barometer.
As it has turned out, that hasn’t really been the case. Saints can fully justify their lack of spending in January.
And, looking at it from the sidelines, you have to conclude that, while it might be headline grabbing or exciting, they have made the correct decisions on this one ...

I think will now spiral into debt and
relegation.
However, we must learn to take our chances in front of goal and MP will
address this problem.
For Wigan I think Adam and Luke will start and Forren will come off the bench.

Im not doubting our teams ability or indeed am i saying we had to spend, but the whole point of getting rid of adkins was to simple improve our communication with europe and get in some big name players to match NC and his plans.
Yes i know he has gone and have moved on dw but what i am saying is NC made a decision and explained why ( his ambition to get saints up high in the league as adkins was'nt doing it and because MP can buy big players to help us do this) but so far none of what he has said is happening.
I know its early days, but surely if we didn't wanted an immediate impact ( as being shown in the transfer window) then why sack him now if he will only achieve what adkins would have done.

They're just stating that we probably have enough to see us to the end of the season, and then MP's expertise in the European market will hopefully kick in and unearth some Gems for next season when we challenge for a top eight place.
Act in haste and repent in leisure or something like that.

Is this the first positive step in the DE efforts to get back into the clubs good books? And get some real SFC news rather than pasting crap form the red tops, or interviewing only Saints dinosaurs from 1976?
And I agree the Saints squad look to me to be one of the most together (thanks to NA) and focussed and determined in the league so what we have will do the business.
Compare with yesterdays joke deadline day where another bunch of mercenaries turned up in West London and Peter O , obviously led by the nose by Arry was made to look the thickest player on the planet LOL!!

On reflection this comment is a very Adkins-ish way of looking at things, I like it.
It reminds a little of those management training courses where you are taught that there are no problems, just opportunities for improvement, and there are no failures, just different levels of attainment.
Either way we should be winning games now against teams like Wigan. The impetus and confidence from the Utd game should still be with us so I'm expecting good things.

Firstly, we have spent £30+ mill in the last six months! As I've said before, don't expect money on tap, the family aren't idiots. Nigel bought too many players who couldn't nail down regular first team places, that would not have been lost on NC and co. Too many were tried and then benched, no real vision just a lot of changing. The Goalkeepers being the perfect example!
Secondly, Poch has had a little look at the squad and has probably told NC to hold off on spending more as he thinks we have enough talent to stay up. By doing this it gives him a better chance to evaluate the players at his disposal and to spend wisely in the summer. He's only been in charge for two matches!
A player could have a purple patch and then be average for the rest of the season. Come July he'll have a much better idea as to just how consistent the players are and in what areas he wants to strengthen.
It's good that we're not making knee jerk purchases, Poch and NC seem to be looking ahead to next season and want to weigh up their options, as far as who should go and who should come in. The future is very bright with NC at the helm and hopefully Poch lives up to the hype!

It so transpires Adkins had picked good quality players after all. Clearly he had blended them into something worth keeping and holding on to.
So probably Adkins was not good enough a motivator? Or perhaps he had no clue how to pick the best formation. Or perhaps his communication skills were carp!
So best get a non English speaking coach in then and keep everythinbg the same - except perhaps he'll ask them to work a bit harder on the pitch!
Sounds all a bit doolally to me!!

Good play Second half and the well taken goal - BUT we need to be TAKING POINTS from manure.
SAINTS FANS WERE AGAIN ON TOP AND WERE MAGNIFICENT.
It is not the only issue that SAINTS have been prudent with finances - they still CAN IMPROVE with slotting in players with even more class ability.
manure have a Strike Force of Rooney - RVP - and Chica ... Who ??
WE STILL NEED TO IMPROVE OUR STRIKE CAPABILITY.
WE NEED TO REVIEW OUR DEFENSIVE LINE UP and more importantly - we need not to be conceding soft goals before the FIGHTBACK.

Just to add, re those saying that the reason for changing managers was somehow linked to getting players in during the window, I wonder if it has crossed your mind (and this is no more than a thought on my part) that some of our stars may have been a bit unhappy with Nigel and, had he still been here, thinking of getting their agents to spread their name around other clubs?
Maybe the best part about this window is that no stars left and were not even rumoured to be leaving (Shaw to the Emirates foster home, aside, I suppose).
Out of interest, compared to us and Manure, for example, how much have QPR spent during the past 3 1/2 years? Anyone know?

I don't think at this point MP's appointment was about transfers. It was about a faster more positive style, more in the line of Barca. You could not accuse NA of being negative, but there is definately drive and passion about the new style.
I do think we have missed an opportunity to strengthen the squad. Everyone around us has strengthened quite considerably and there are some very good players come in at those clubs. We may regret our lack of spending in this window come the end of the season. it depends on if we can enforce our play on other teams and take the many chances we create. 21 attempts at M Utd's goal and only one in.
Wigan have one won out of 10 and we have won 2. It will be tight and nervy tomorrow. .
I think one of the reasons NA got the sack because we drew too many games with the balance of play we should of won.If MP cannot change that we will probably go down.Lol and we will probably have a new manager and maybe new owners.

We've offloaded a few of our fringe players on loan to get some regular football, which will hopefully help them improve (I'm thinking Steeeve in particular), got a bargain defender, which is exactly where we needed to strengthen and haven't lost any of the first team. Good business by the Don methinks.
I'll get round to reading the Transfer thread a bit later, but now I'd better return to my day job...

Bring back Branfoot wrote:Good post, never thought you could be so positive !!.
It's understandable that fans are disappointed that we haven't been more active in this transfer window, but there are a few things to consider.
IMO Boruc is showing great improvement in his game and confidence to what we first saw.
The squad imo are good enough to keep us in this league, lets face it we were never going to win it this year no matter how many players we might of purchased.
By the amount of players going out on loan, i think M.P. knows what senior players will be shipped out in the summer, and then will be the time to buy and bring through the young players from the under 21's.
Three points tomorrow would give everyone on here a lift and maybe they would get behind SOUTHAMPTON FOOTBALL CLUB as one.

For example BET365 has Saints at 7/4, with Wigan at 5/4, QPR at 8/14, Villa at 8/14, and Reading at 1/2.
Bookies tend to know a bit more than random 'fans', after all, they do make a living out of it.

This does make the sacking of Adkins even more tasteless. MP knew weeks ago about the job and the players. He would have had timne to identify weaknesses he felt existed and target suitable new blood for the last few months of the season.
The key points in SFC's introduction statement for MoPo were his technical and tactical ability and man management skills. In the two games he has demonstrated an awareness that Nigel just didn't have. As nice a man as he was, Nigel was winging it.

Listen, it's fairly obvious that Saints fans are fickle. A few months ago Puncheon was hated but now you love him & sing funny songs about him.
Boruc was unbelievably booed minutes into his home debut, became the Devil incarnate but is now "world class".
Therefore I fully believe that Cortese will become more loved than Matty and have two statues built.
One of which you will hate and one of which...........
The fact that you turn down all the offers shows that not only are all the fans deluded but the manager and owners are too!
Before you mention your European exploits, we could all achieve something there if we got a free pass like you do every year! It's a bit like automatically putting Bradford in the semis every year really!
Our interest in Hooper ended when NA left but I did enjoy the pundits talking about Hooper the other day and saying he is a goalscorer but not a footballer and would struggle in the Prem. HAHAHAHA

Bring back Branfoot wrote:Good post, never thought you could be so positive !!.
It's understandable that fans are disappointed that we haven't been more active in this transfer window, but there are a few things to consider.

Changing Adkins was the right thing to do, he had done everything he could and training was becoming stale, some of his decisions were being questioned, and the general feeling was that whilst we were performing admirably - we had reached a plateau.
Pochettino is the man charged with taking the team to the next level. This includes improving the style of play, improving the existing players, and identifying new players to fit the new style.
Investing in a few players now just for the sake of it is not a good policy. We have more than enough to stay up, and by the time the summer comes around MP will have a clearer picture of who fits and what he needs to build and strengthen for next year.

Wee bit of advice though. DON'T sit with the Jam Tart fans & cheer "saints" on. We have a Manager who did something similar & was physically attacked.
Mind you, the Hearts fan got off. Despite it being seen on TV by millions and the fan admitting guilt, he was found Not Guilty.

I can't believe some of the drivel written on here - it's embarrassing that so many Saints supporters clearly have such a blinkered and ill-informed set of views and ideas.
There is far more going on at our club than just a change of manager and it's not about importing a load of celeb players either.
The purpose here is to change the ethos of the club. To make Southampton Football Club the focal point and not the personalities involved within.
By evolving a system of play and training youth players in that system you reduce the risk of disruption by a change of personnel and ensure stability and growth. Even Messi comes second place to the club that is Barcelona and if personalities leave, the club suffers little (i.e. Pep Guardiola)
This is what has started with us, it will take time and no doubt be a bumpy road, but ultimately, if it can be achieved, will deliver success. Exciting times!

True story. In 1987 I was roped into playing for the DailyEcho footie team at very short notice (must have been desperate!) to play against the News team at Cams Alders Fareham. So, we are STAYING UP with our existing squad!! Looks good to me!! A couple of things puzzle me though. Coutinho: how is our £10.2M bid topped by 8.5M Scouse pounds? Butland: how is our £6M bid beaten by 4M Stoke pounds? Anyway, all that is history now. 3 points here at Wigan tomorrow will confirm the bookmakers' developing view that we are going to finish safe in 15th or 16th position. But the town is a dump, I have already had a look round and there is nothing to see! Looks like a quiet evening in the hotel bar looking forward to the game!
As for Butland Bid , Birmingham weren’t on the edge of administration last summer hence they wouldn't accept £6million - Bad move now with there current financial state, also Stoke have paid up front and a lot of Saints payment was offset ......
I think either MP is going to buy a new keeper in the Summer or be believes Gasser will come through ........ Personally it doesn't seem to be an issue anymore and I think Gasser will be a quality keeper in the next 2 years .......

What do people think about Gaston Ramirez?
Was he worth the money?
Why does he keep getting left out or subbed?
What do you think made MP take Ramirez and Puncheon off at half time the other night?
We need goals, who is going to score them?

Yeah, it's a real shame we didn't sign anyone in this window. If only we could have got a highly-rated young centre back in I'd be feeling a lot more confident about next season.
O hang on - we did! Maybe we should stop worrying like a bunch of old women and go and support the team. I think the rest of the season under MP is going to be very, very exciting and we're going to knock over some decent teams.
True story. In 1987 I was roped into playing for the DailyEcho footie team at very short notice (must have been desperate!) to play against the News team at Cams Alders Fareham. The big joke in the DE team was that all the DE journos were all Pompey fans. The two I knew certainly were, but that was in the days where Saints were established top dogs. Maybe things haven't changed and this forum is just a gigantic wind-up.

Why does this stray scotsman get so much out of winding up saints fans?
They all go on about the motherland, tell tales of the freedom they fought for up there, how devoted and true they are to the scottish cause..
but would prefer to live in Totton..

We are going to have to ride our luck for the rest of the season regarding injures thats for sure. All this rubbish about centre halves and defence etc etc ,, we need attacking midfield players who can score. we have plenty of defensive cover. For me we are a midfielder short who knows where the net is. Its fairly incredible really I think that we signed no-one except the defender. Having part time players like Ramirez does not help. Why we spent £12M on someone we had no intention of allowing to compete for a full time position is beyond me.... Still, I think we will be lucky and if we keep playing the way we have been this years mission will be done-and-dusted with a few gaes to spare. Wigan is a must-not-loose tho...

Having suffered seeing Saints relegated to Div 1 it is now exciting times with entertaining football at SMS.
We have players such as luuuuke!! Who have the makings of a top class England International.
After the maure game, the papers are all about shrek and his amazing brace.
Listening to Solent, sounds more like they were lucky. They didn't get the ball in the second half.
At least Fergie had the decency to compliment us.
The Press never get behind us as we are only a "small club". So annoying.
Sacking NA was sad,but I agree, let's stop moaning and get behind the lads and MP.
We did sign Forren at 3.5m. Add this to the other numerous signings in the summer. Who would have thought 2 years ago that've would be moaning about not signing big!! Leave that to a crap London Team with a Pensioner as Manager who will pocket his dosh when sacked or leaves and will be on the Golf course come mid May, leaving a trail of disruption behind him.
Go gentle on me, new to the forum.
COYR!!!
3-0 today. SRL 2 and AL 1

Up front is a different story.. they are learning, chances are coming but we just are not sharp in the box and have no decisive clinic strategy. Rickie is fanbulous around the box and good in the air from set pieces but isn;t athletic and quick. Jay is good coming off the flank and has pace but as yet if far away from being terrifying in the box.. same for Punch as he is creating and drawing the defence with lots of effort but fails to get around the last man and too often holds too long.
The answer should have been a moderate spend on a proven box finisher that can beat goalies every time one on one and can snap shot spray balls and half crosses into the back of the net. A powerful nuggetty sharp shooter to give us an all important edge of impact. If it were a veteran 20mins of edge would be great... someone to pass on there skill to the young shooters we have.
5m or 6m would have made sense as insurance when striving for a 60m target and still have a chance of Europe.
