Pochettino backs Shaw to be England star

Daily Echo: Luke Shaw Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw is today getting over the disappointment of missing out on the chance to become the second youngest player to represent England under-21s, but new Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino has backed the teenage sensation to become a full international.

At just 17 years and 209 days old, Shaw, pictured, would have been beaten only by ex-Saint Theo Walcott in becoming the youngest player to play for England’s under-21s if, as had been expected, he won his first cap at that level against Sweden in Walsall this evening.

However, late last night it was confirmed that Shaw had to withdraw from the squad following training with Stuart Pearce’s men with a ‘suspected injury.’ Many believe Shaw’s form puts him only narrowly behind Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines for the left back role in the senior England squad, and with the way he is going it seems only a matter of time before he gets a full international call.

New Saints boss Pochettino has been impressed with the youngster and believes he can make the grade “Yes, bit by bit he could get there (being an England international),” said Pochettino, who as a player was capped 20 times by Argentina, including at the 2002 World Cup.

“I think he has a great future and at 17 I have to say he is very mature.”

Pochettino opted to leave Shaw on the bench for the game against Manchester United at Old Trafford in favour of Danny Fox but quickly recalled the youngster for the trip to Wigan.

“He’s got a good future ahead of him,” reckoned the Saints manager.

“At only 17 years of age he has to carry on working and develop his play a lot more.”

Walcott was 17 years and 152 days old and at Saints when he made his England under-21 debut.

He also set a bit of history for the England under-21s that day when he became the youngest ever player to score for the side when he netted the opener in England’s 2-2 draw with Moldova.

Shaw’s chances of being capped had been aided by the withdrawal of Norwich left back Ryan Bennett.

Saints won’t have any players on England under-21 duty this evening with Nathaniel Clyne also having had to withdraw from the squad through injury.

Clyne was taken off in the second half of Saints’ 2-2 draw with Wigan at the weekend.

I think most Saints fans want our players to be recognised at the highest-level, but one of the drawbacks is that the club loses control over the way the players train. I feel gutted for Luke, but he has the potential to surpass Ashley Cole's record as an England international.
Hope he's ok for Citeh and that no more of our players return injured, from their games.

Hopefully it's a "diplomatic" injury and he will be good for Saturday. Don't want any of our first team regulars getting injured in pointless friendlies. The loss of just one player could make all the difference at the season's end.

My favourite thing about Luke Shaw is that he's unafraid to admit to liking Justin Bieber. That takes great courage in this day and age, where young men with unlikely hair who happen to make amazing music are reviled more than arms dealers or satanic banking cartels.

A man with the guts to stand alone like this will be an almighty warrior for Southampton Football Club. I salute you, Luke.

It may be an unsightly pimple that has appeared on his nose. You know how seventeen year olds really worry about that kind of thing - even more so if they are to be seen on national television.

I suspect it's either an infection from shaving early chin stubble off or from squeezing a blackhead out. The club doc should be able to clear it up pretty quickly so long as Luke didn't pop or pick it too soon.

Hopefully, Mauricio will brief the squad not to wind him up with stuff like "You been picked again" and "In a spot of bother again mate?"

Life is too short for guitar solos. This is the most important thing you need to remember about music.

I can assure you as a sound engineer,
( a part of my technical duties) that all the acts mentioned appear to be highly lucrative, or they wouldn't have been promoted as much to be a success .
As for guitar solos, I always like the one and two note solos, back in the ussr or the trumpet solo from over the rainbow, which I know a good joke about, which is too long for now.
Instead I will leave you with how youknowthe drummer is knocking on your door .

Justin's coming here next month, Retford. Gutted now that I missed out on a ticket. Especially as I've already had my Led Zep fix.

I went with a mate to see them at Knebworth House in 1979. We arrived the night before, emptied the local supermarket of Carlsberg Special - we left with a trollyful along the A602 - and kipped in a field. Next day we had breakfast (Carlsberg Special), lunch (Carlsberg Special) and tea (Carlsberg Special) while enjoying Chas n Dave and Southside Johney. I then passed out and missed most of Led Zep.

Never did me any harm, Retford. Can't beat a good guitar lick, especially when you're several Carlsberg Specials to the good and craving a decent curry.

Back on thread, I guess there's more chance of Luke racking up 100 England caps than me getting to a Justin Beiber concert.

This is a mega big game. Two teams that like to high press One team in a relegation dog fight and the other really must win or the league title will be basically over if M Utd win at home to Everton on Sunday.
City know they must get 3 points.
If we can get something out of this game I will be well pleased.

It's a bit of a racket, though, isn't it? The trouble with 1970s rock music is that it was all made under the influence of a LOT of cocaine, which isn't good for quality control. Hence at no point did anyone think "Um, Nigel, about this 10-minute drum solo: do you think it might possibly be a bit self-indulgent?"

Those buggers just churned it out without stopping to think. Which, of course, is in stark contrast to Justin's Bieber's writers who have meeting after meeting to discuss intro lengths, radio appeal, sync opportunities and many other important things. This attention to quality control is why Bieber is better than 'Led' 'Zep'.

Back on thread, I guess there's more chance of Luke racking up 100 England caps than me getting to a Justin Beiber concert.

Quite. What he said.

I suppose that arguement's a bit like saying that Matt Le Tiss would have been a better footballer if he'd been placed under the same sort of diet and fitness regime, given the same pre-match lectures and sent to the same hairdresser as Luke. Alas, no amount of tweaking with his shape, brain or quaff could have aided the shear artistry of that strike at Blackburn.

Oh well, as you say, he deserves better treatment than arms dealers or satanic banking cartels ..... or, for that matter, the former Lib Dem Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.

Mind you, and here's the rub, if Luke were to put, say, Ace of Spades by Motorhead on his i-pod just before (if?) he runs out next Saturday, I bet he'd be faster into the tackle than if he had just been chilling on Boyfriend.

Bieber better than Led Zep? Oh Dear... you'll be saying you like country music next and then all will be lost forever ....

The most pertinent Bieber comment I ever heard was in an episode of House when he made the astute observation that a particularly stupid patient had one brain cell less than Bieber ...How I miss that programme ...

No it wouldn't! Led Zeppelin are the worst band in the entire history of recorded sound.

Genuinely terrible.
I am assuming your comments re the greatest blues rock band ever are tongue in cheek. I saw them back in the early 70's and at the O2, trust me, fantastic !!!!!!!
Did they have flashing lights and dance routines?

Nah, he's a footballer which means he's contractually obliged to listen to nothing but Drake on a match day.

(I don't even know who Drake is, but footballers bloody love him.)

OK it's time we returned to football ...
I like country music you cheeky swine. Songs are a bit sad sometimes, but if you play them backwards you sober up, your wife comes home and your dog comes back to life - result!. I tried to write country songs myself, but it's very hard to find acceptable words that rhyme with truck.

As for 70's rock music it was all the same old stuff - just different orchestrations of f@rt, belch and grunt noises and a few squeals from nudists who'd had their @rses unexpectedly sniffed by dogs' with cold wet noses.

The only good things about rock music are that if the musicians get it all wrong nobody notices and that deaf people can hear it through their feet.

Back on thread, I guess there's more chance of Luke racking up 100 England caps than me getting to a Justin Beiber concert.[/p]
It's a bit of a racket, though, isn't it? The trouble with 1970s rock music is that it was all made under the influence of a LOT of cocaine, which isn't good for quality control. Hence at no point did anyone think "Um, Nigel, about this 10-minute drum solo: do you think it might possibly be a bit self-indulgent?" Those buggers just churned it out without stopping to think. Which, of course, is in stark contrast to Justin's Bieber's writers who have meeting after meeting to discuss intro lengths, radio appeal, sync opportunities and many other important things. This attention to quality control is why Bieber is better than 'Led' 'Zep'.[/p]
OK it's time we returned to football ...[/p]
Confucious

From a non-bias point of view, I am delighted Luke was called up and would be very happy for him if he got into the England squad at such a young age. He thoroughly deserves it.

From a Saints fan point of view, I hope he doesn't get called up. This may seem unfair but if he gets called up the media hypicrosy will go into overdrive and it could affect the players performances. More importantly it will mean that one of the top clubs in the country (ie Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham etc) will cash in for him and he will go. And he will join an endless line of top players we have sold.

It's a hard choice, one I wrestle with frequently. Liquidation gives that stella moment. But struggling on with an infighting truss stumbling from failure to failure obviously has a longevity to it. Either is fine though.

It's a hard choice, one I wrestle with frequently. Liquidation gives that stella moment. But struggling on with an infighting truss stumbling from failure to failure obviously has a longevity to it. Either is fine though.
i think there is a lot of mileage left if the truss take over and all those donators of £1000 watching their dosh disappear into the money pit that is P.F.C
and the best bit will be we told em

This is a very good point indeed. Personally I think I'd prefer the truss but I think liquidation is inevitable.

I wonder if Birch is thinking the value of a ground belonging to a team starting in League 2 on minus 10 might be considered to be fcuk all and he's delaying the hearing until this appears to be the inevitable conclusion? I hope not because that would be the actions of a team losing on purpose and who should therefore be thrown out of the league.

It's brilliant isn't it?

He's going to want to get to the end of the season. Expect a further adjournment. Personally I'd love to see the court case go ahead, it would be even more fun.

no the average skate has a selective memory and they only remember games they have won, i think it was 5trop who posted the other day that the last time we played them in the cup the result was 4-1 to them, he then added the last league game was also 4-1 to them! you see they didnt win either game last year so it gets forgotten. i think the problem stems from them only having a few brain cells and they can only store a little memory at a time.
