Saints stun champions City with brilliant win
Saints produced the most stunning result since their return to the Premier League as they defeated champions Manchester City 3-1 at St Mary’s.
The win was a first for Mauricio Pochettino since taking over from Nigel Adkins and, on a day when Saints’ relegation rivals all lost, lifted them six points clear of the relegation zone.
It was a stirring display from Saints against a lacklustre and, frankly, wretched City side who gifted them all three goals.
Jason Puncheon gave Saints an early lead which was doubled by Steven Davis before Edin Dzeko pulled one back.
However, that was the only high point for Roberto Mancini’s men as a Gareth Barry own goal gave Saints the cushion they needed to record a memorable and valuable three points.
Inexplicable mistakes by Joe Hart and Gareth Barry gave Manchester City's Barclays Premier League title hopes a potentially decisive blow.
City goalkeeper Hart admitted in the build-up that anything but victory at St Mary's would all but end any their hopes of retaining the title, with leaders Manchester United already boasting a nine-point cushion.
Roberto Mancini's side simply did not look like a side in need of a victory , conceding after just seven minutes when Jason Puncheon slotted home.
Hart could have possibly done better with the shot that led to the opener, but there was no doubting his culpability for Southampton's second.
Excellent team interplay put through Rickie Lambert, whose fierce drive squirmed through the England international's grasp, allowing Steven Davis to bundle home.
Edin Dzeko reduced the deficit as half-time approached, although a two-goal lead could have been restored on the stroke of half-time had referee Martin Atkinson not waved away Jay Rodriguez's penalty appeals.
That was soon forgotten, though, as Barry passed into his own goal unchallenged to put Saints on course for a first win since Pochettino replaced Nigel Adkins at the helm.
On the opening day of the season the newly-promoted side were valiant in a 3-2 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
It was a similarly end-to-end encounter this evening, with Saints dominating the proceedings early on and netting a seventh-minute opener.
After Barry was dispossessed, Puncheon burst down the right flank and played through the unmarked Rodriguez. Hart managed to deny the winger but the ball fell kindly for Puncheon, who slotted home calmly in front of the Northam End.
City were struggling to deal with Southampton's attacking intent in an opening 15 minutes in which a tame Sergio Aguero effort was all they had to show for their efforts.
They eventually began to settle but were soon rocked by a second Southampton goal in the 22nd minute.
Lambert collected the ball on the right and played a neat one-two with Puncheon, before cutting back and firing a shot that Hart let slip through from his midriff, allowing Davis to poke home.
Saints fans ironically bellowed 'England No.1' after the gaffe, before directing their attention at referee Atkinson.
First they took umbrage with his decision to book Lambert for hauling back Joleon Lescott, before he then awarded a foul on the edge of the box after Dzeko took a tumble.
Rodriguez saw a right-foot effort go just inches wide of Hart's far post as the home side pressed for a third, with Nathaniel Clyne seeing a strike deflect behind.
Pablo Zabaleta floated ball to the back post just evaded Aguero as City looked for a goal, which came six minutes before half-time.
The Bosnian striker got himself in the way of terrible Saints corner, before bursting up the field and tucking home a Zabaleta cross.
It was harsh on the hosts, who felt hard done by in stoppage-time when Rodriguez was brought to ground in the area by Yaya Toure, captaining the side on his return from the African Nations Cup.
Atkinson awarded a corner instead of a spot-kick much to the home fans' frustrations - but they were celebrating soon after the restart.
After Puncheon hammered over moments into the second half, the winger could then not quite latch onto a Lambert pullback, which Barry inexplicably passed into his own goal.
Gael Clichy was booked soon after as City's frustrations became evident, with Saints pushing for a fourth.
The visitors were having to defend with all they had and hope for a chance on the counter, with Artur Boruc reacting well to palm away an Aguero strike wide when they did voyage forward.
James Milner, on moments earlier for Samir Nasri, shot wide from the resulting corner but City were soon back on the defence.
Toure was booked for a foul on substitute Adam Lallana soon after, before Fox limped off to be replaced by Frazer Richardson.
Aleksandar Kolarov and Maicon were City's final introductions, with the latter soon denied from close range by Boruc.
James Ward-Prowse replaced Davis for what a nervy final 10 minutes in which City were kept at bay, meaning United could go 12 points clear at the top should they beat Everton tomorrow.

Great result, city didn't play badly, Saints never let them play.
Rickie Lambert was immense tonight, but the whole team did fantastic.
Other sides will take notice of us now and try to work out how we can be stopped.

All of these factors suit the players we have in our squad, I still don't understand why Nigel didn't play a more attacking varied game. When we have the ball we now play with the intention of making our possession pay off and not just playing keep ball. You can see that the players are still adapting but it's starting to come good!
To all the Nigel Sycophants how are you enjoying your humble pie?

Yeah I don't get why some fans have it in for Cortese. I think you hit on it with the banker theory, some sort of inverted snobbery. As you say I hope that minority doesn't ruin it!
What we both wanted for the club is coming together. We seem to have a purpose to our play, no more aimless short passes.
I have nothing against the happy clappers, although I did when I first came on here! Their Nigel's s*** doesn't stink routine was graiting, but the likes of OSPers and even Bill and Seed took the mature approach over Nigel's ousting and talked a few fans off the ledge! It's great to see fans like yourself who speak sense on this site and get where the club is going. Up the Saints! Btw Slugger's sound!

Wigan were outplayed by a Southampton team playing a high tempo game, allied to skilful football when in possession.

Quite impressive how Mau has been able to effect how the team plays so quickly..
And why did we run out of steam so often under NA playing a slower tempo? Perhaps it's all to do with sharing the work load, ALL the players chasing, closing and doing their job.

I think Yos answered a few critics today.
He and Jos both did well when you consider who they were against and the costly errors from last week.
Mind you, Cork and Schneiderlin were, again, superb, with, of the two, Cork shading it this week.

On 2 or 3 occasions, when Citeh were hitting the ball long towards Aguero/Dzeko, he was stepping out of defence and cutting off the supply so easily.
Don't understand why, in recent threads, some still don't rate him.
He has a calmness, that spreads throughout the defence.
Something else I noticed, in the first half, was Saints midfield players, having over committed themselves, carefully stopping the run of an opponent, by obstructing them, preventing them running into space.
Something else that MP may have brought in.

I hate to get controversial on such a great day but I think you're both being a bit harsh regarding us so-called ‘happy clappers’.
Speaking for myself, first of all, my support is and always has been for the club. Not FOR or AGAINST any one person involved in its running. While Nigel was a part of that, I supported him and there was no difference with Pards before him. There was nothing sycophantic about it.
Second, don’t let your opposition to Nigel cloud your memory. He did, after all, mastermind two promotions.
Third, don’t you think that just a tiny bit of credit for this win should go to Nigel and his coaching team? They (and Pards) built that team and had it playing a pretty attractive game and, with a tad more luck and a little less on-field and off-field naivety, we might have gained a win or two more.
Nigel has gone and MoPo has carried things forward – taken us to the next level; he had my support from the moment he was appointed – nothing to do with his achievements so far.
One thing I fail to get is this idea some have that you MUST be 100% for or against, NC or Nigel or MoPo or whatever. It’s like the Le Tiss thing. We’re allowed to be critical of him if we think he is wrong without that meaning that we don’t still love what he did on the pitch. You know, it's quite okay to be behind someone and critical of some of their actions or ideas. Hell, I might even be critical of MoPo if we don't win the league next year :)

we were great in so many areas
but gotta say the defence was really impressive
especially missing shaw and fonte and looking better and better each game
hope shaw can get back with next weeks break for newcastle game
I think Yos answered a few critics today.
He and Jos both did well when you consider who they were against and the costly errors from last week.
Mind you, Cork and Schneiderlin were, again, superb, with, of the two, Cork shading it this week.

Seriously Strassie I have and never will be anti Nigel, to decent a guy for that HOWEVER the technical deficiencies were eveident at this level, the players did not become superb overnight their respective talents were there for a long while...
...the BUT lies in how to get them to believe and not panic something that they have only achieved continuously since MoPo..
...in this respect BbB and me me me called it right.. we showed we could do it occasssionally under Nige now it's almost 90 minutes...big jump up..what can I say or BbB..

You have every right to comment on somebody,s inapproriate statement. As an active serviceman at that time I have ignored those comments along with everybody else on here.
You attempted to spill the same rallying sentiment on the News site - notice that there were no replies there either.
By the way - for once I find myself in total agreement with what you are trying to say.....
However, judging by your previous posts I doubt very much if you are old enough to have such a mate. If you did you wouldn't be bringing it up on a football thread.

What a difference a new manager makes! Our whole approach is so much more positive, with players making runs, greater variation in how we distribute the ball and we play at a quicker tempo. I'm glad to see we're pressing more and looking to unsettle the opposition.
All of these factors suit the players we have in our squad, I still don't understand why Nigel didn't play a more attacking varied game. When we have the ball we now play with the intention of making our possession pay off and not just playing keep ball. You can see that the players are still adapting but it's starting to come good!

MP has played 4 won 1, drawn 2 and lost 1. I, for one, am right behind him. But he still has much to prove. This is still Nigel's team, Nigel's style and Nigel's ethic. Your comments about our attacking style are laughable.
Let's celebrate the success we had under Nigel Adkins and thank him for everything he did. Most of us true supporters were doing that whilst he was manager, not trying to undermine what he was trying to achieve. But now he has gone, we move. The main reason for this improvement is simple - Tactics.
Unfortunately Nigel Atkins was found to be tactically nieve in the games upto mid-November which is when I for one was calling for a change, if not of manager then of the coaching staff. Agreed that NA had a difficult start and the players also had to learn but we could not risk waiting. NA was unlucky that he had started to learn but it was too late as Mauricio Pochettino had left his club and was already being set up to come. I am sure this is was when Nicola took the decision to make a Management change. The timing was probably due to getting him and his staff all sorted and available to make the change immediate.
Time will tell if this was a good decision but already we are seeing the same players perform better with the new tactics that Maurico and his staff have applied.
I thank Nigel Adkins for taking us to this level and wish him every success for the future.
Lets move on and hope Maurico can take us to an even higher level. The bus is still rolling !!
Come on you red & white pin-stripes !!

Perfect result with all the others losing their games yesterday and to top it off, the performance and effort from the boys was nothing short of outstanding. I think the tactics were just about perfect too, so hats off to MP and the coaches.
It could have so easily been 5-1...beautiful one touch football, back heels, pressing, tackling, and 110% effort from all, we had it all, picking a man of the match is so difficult today, the whole team played together as one and it just shows, that a team of world class stars isn't affective unless they play as a team, saints do that and it is reaping the rewards. With one transfer window signing yet to play it looks as though the decisions being made are good and they now exactly what they are doing and where they want to go...!
So I'm off to nurse my raging hangover after a fantastic day of football.
