Jason Puncheon waiting on Southampton to offer him a new deal
7:50am Friday 15th February 2013 in Saints News
By Gordon Simpson, Senior Sports Reporter
Jason Puncheon
Jason Puncheon’s Saints contract continues to run down, with the in-form winger now into the final few months of his deal.
Puncheon headlines a list of nine first-team players at St Mary’s due to become free agents in the summer.
The 26-year-old, who has been in tremendous form, has already he wants to stay next season.
But a contract extension is still to be sorted out. Saints are not yet under any major pressure to agree new terms, despite Puncheon being close to the end of his deal.
The player and his representatives are not allowed to speak to any other clubs within the same association, and can only therefore talk with those outside of England.
That is an unlikely scenario, especially as the winger has already made his intentions clear. Asked if he hoped to be back at Saints next season, Puncheon, pictured, recently replied: “I’m hoping to be, I’m happy here, and that’s the most important thing.”
Given his performances this term, it is almost inconceivable that the club would allow the player to leave for nothing, although they could wait until the summer to resolve the issue. Saints’ approach to the contracts of their key players means they have few major concerns on the horizon.
Most of their most influential stars are tied down to long-term deals, although Rickie Lambert and Morgan Schneiderlin are due to be up for renewal in 2014, as are Guly do Prado and Kelvin Davis.
As well as Puncheon, keeper Artur Boruc, who has started to cement the number one shirt, is also heading towards the end of his contract.
He only signed at St Mary’s until the end of the season when he joined in September.
However, should recent performances continue, an extension could well be warranted.
Fellow keeper Tommy Forecast, who has not played a single first-team match since joining in 2008, will undoubtedly be released.
The same fate is set to befall Ryan Dickson, currently on loan at Bradford City.
Ben Reeves, who has been farmed out to Southend, also sees his contract expire in the summer and the 21-year-old academy product may have to leave to pursue regular first-team football.
Saints also have a quartet of more senior players to consider, each of who have contributed to the club’s success over the past few seasons.
Centre-half Dan Seaborne, who is on loan at Cherries until the end of the campaign, is approaching the end of his deal, along with midfielder Richard Chaplow and full-backs Frazer Richardson and Danny Butterfield.
Between them, however, they only account for two Premier League starts and six substitute appearances this term.

For all we know, Puncheon may well have been offered a new deal.
Gordon Simpson, or Homer as I'm sure you're known outside of this pathetic local rag, why do you persist in trying to unsettle the playing staff of Southampton FC? Maybe if you tried investigating before writing articles you would be welcomed at St Mary's Stadium!
And why mention RL and MS in this article as they are still under contract until 2014? Time to face the facts - no-one at Saints wants to talk to you! Get over it and prove that you deserve to be welcomed back by the club.

I hope Punch isn't replaced because he's been really productive this season and chipped in with a few goals. But Cork and Adam are so solid, Morgan's our best ball winner and sth tells me Gaston will figure in his plans because of his creativity. So if he does bring in a new face sb has to make way!
I still think Punch will be offered a new contract because he's proved he can cut it at this level. So even if Poch doesn't fancy him as a starter long term, he could still play a role as a squad player.

Plus maybe he has been promised the new contract if he continues to perform week in week out, that would be his motivation.
We have all seen loan players lose that motivation once their wages were guaranteed for 2 - 3 years having signed a contract.

This system relies heavily on a couple of attacking midfielders, who have a good long range shot and who can take their chances when in the box. I expect him to bring in such a player in the summer. Don't get me wrong I believe we have the makings of an excellent midfield unit, but with the system Poch has put in place he'll want another creative Player but with a proven shot.

To add - Forte, Hammond, Barnard, De Ridder, Davis (K), Sharp, Martin, Guly and Lee must all be farmed out. This will leave space for 4/5 top players in the summer.

So I am betting that later today there will be a thread about an ex-Saints player who will be quoted as saying we must keep Puncheon, or someone or other. They wil say how we we will succeed in Europe or there will be their team selection for the Newcastle game.
They dig up the old boys whenever the news is a bit thin.
I'd wager that we get some comment from MLT, as he can't seem to sneeze without it being published these days or maybe someone from the '76 cup final side telling us how it was all different back then.
Any guesses who it's likely to be ?

I keep reading that Wet Spam are interested in Sir Rickie. I can't see it happening as Rickes' neck couldn't take the strain of looking up to the sky for the ball all the time.
Also he would struggle to master how to drop to the floor like a sack of spuds if he was to take on the Andy Carroll role.
I see Alan Pardew has already started making excuses for the Newcastle game. He's saying that he can't play a full strength team for the European game and the game against us as his players will be tired.

Did anyone see the news the other day that Frank Lampard has been given a publishing deal to write children’s books? He reckons some of the characters will be “loosely based” on real footballers he has played with. I’m not convinced anyone at Chelsea is appropriate material for an under-10 audience. It’s be all “One day, Racist John picked up the ball and kicked it to Ashley Love-Rat who sprinted forward and crossed to Nando, the Spanish boy who couldn’t hit his own c0ck with a slipper. The crowd booed and made monkey gestures. Nando missed. The crowd booed some more and called all the Chelsea players ‘cants’. The end.”

No other club has been linked with him and I'm sure NC is doing all his dealings with contracts behind the scenes in the normal fashion. We should be used to this by now. Whatever is in the best interests of the club will be supported by Cortese. End of.

Deserves a new deal, but would he slip back to the 'old' Puncheon if he's got a guaranteed deal? Sign him year by year, or even 6 monthly contracts, with extensions after so many appearances (barring injuries)

The end.”
I dunno, but I’m not sure I’m buying it for my little ‘uns.
..the assumption will be that they are a faraway native tribe not a London bullyboy one..
Incidents such as glassing a 14 year old in Oxford street by a group of 45 year olds who then wanted police protection from some serious Saints old boys will not make bedtime reading either..

We also need to extend Boruc's contract for a further year.
We could extend Chaplow's contract, depending on whether we keep Hammond or not when he returns from Brighton.
Ben Reeves could sign for another year and then go on loan for game time as long as we pay none of his wages.
The rest should go, which is sad but also good as it means a new side can come in.

Based on his past attitude though I can only think winding his contract down suits him because he can demand out of proportion wages from any interested clubs.
We'll see. Would like to think he'll stay in the same way Walcott did at Arsenal. Can't blame him for waiting to see who might come in for him, but it's questionable whether he'd get a better footballing option than Saints, assuming we stay up.
Key thing is, we will only pay him what he's worth, so as long as he's sensible about it. If he wants silly money, let him go.
Must say though, if Ramirez is on a lot more than him wouldn't you be demanding a bit of parity?

However, are their better options out there? perhaps.
We have seen anyone is replaceable here if we believe the model is to fast track the project to the next level.
I say sign him up, though I would not argue if he was replaced next season by someone with more talent, say Bale.
