Pochettino: It is "obvious" we will survive
5:04pm Sunday 24th February 2013 in Saints News
By Adam Leitch, Chief Sports Writer
Mauricio Pochettino
Mauricio Pochettino insists it is “obvious” Saints will avoid relegation from the Premier League despite his frustration with referee Chris Foy as his side lost 4-2 at Newcastle.
Saints have a three point cushion above the bottom three ahead of a big fixture against Harry Redknapp’s QPR at St Mary’s on Saturday.
Pochettino is very confident his side will avoid the drop but was not happy with Foy.
The Saints boss wasn’t complaining about the penalty award for handball against Danny Fox but the second goal, claiming there was a foul and then an offside that was missed.
“It is obvious that we will stay in the Premiership,” he said.
“I have the same worry as all the teams that are in that part of the table but it’s neither more or less, it’s the same.
“I do have confidence in my team.
“We played a very good second half where we deserved to win the match but the small details made it that we left St James’ with empty hands.
“The handball is completely involuntary.
“My complaint is their second goal with the foul and the offside that was not called.”

Posters are right in that 2-2 would have been a fair outcome from the game and taking 4 points from Newcastle.
MP must positively control his Players from the touch line - so they do not get the bit between their teeth and commit suicide.
Premier League Managers suss that with Saints playing a high line - they have got a chance on the break.
THAT IS WHY MORE THAN EVER WE NEED THE DEFENCE SORTING.
MP must demonstrate that he can adopt different styles of play.
AGAINST CITY WAS GOOD - TODAY FOR MP IT WAS BELOW STANDARD.
WE WILL BOUNCE BACK AGAINST QPR.
WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON.

I liked the way we played today, we look so much more dangerous under Poch. A lethal dose of Danny was our undoing but long term things look very positive with NC and Poch calling the shots.

Well said Poch! We will stay up, end of story. As I have previously said Danny Fox is not Premiership standard and really should be got rid of in the summer along with Do Prado.

Experienced, quality managers know that over the course of a season each club gets its fair share of luck.
MP is neither experienced or quailty at present he is surviving on Nigel's hard work --- wait until we see MP's team the happy clappies are in for a big shock!

Theborebore used to say (right until the time he went) that NA was living off the back of Pardew's team. Mysteriously, it's now NA's team a mere month later.
Sadly, no mention of Solent Interiors; he's losing his touch.

I couldn't understand why Puncheon didn't start given his recent form.
Was he excluded to make way for Lallana if he was IMO that was wrong.
Why was Shaw subbed? Was it because he was tiring or not playing very well? I didn't hear he was injured.
Fox was unfortunate. Having seen the penalty my view it was ball to hand. Hoovield og seems to have been a lack of communication.
I'm very disappointed today in Rodriguez I thought he'd turn the corner and was improving. Ramirez likewise was disappointing.
On the plus side it seems Spider, Cork and Davis did well. Great for Rickie to get his hundredth goal he sounded as though he played well!!!!

Total b0ll0cks. Another joke refereeing performance against us; another point stolen from us.
It really was the little decisions which swung the game against us, like nearly every 50/50 going for the Toon.
I'd love to see them win the Europa, but their fans really are the most one-eyed, moaning bunch of g!ts I've ever seen - and it had a huge influence on a weak, incompetent ref.

I agree that Poch is still unproven at this level but Nigel was well out of his depth at this level. I believe Poch will bring in some quality and get rid of the dead wood.
We are playing a much more threatening game but the defense is no where near the finished article. And time is running out for Jay, he's being given starts, now he must deliver.

For those having a go a Fox, remember he had a good game against City last time out and Shaw I believe has missed a fair bit of training over the last 2 or 3 weeks because of his knee. There is also a rumour he took a knock in the game.
.
Remember also at 2-2 we had the better chances and if Rickie or Adam had taken one of them we would have probably gone on to win.

It seemed to be a deliberate Toon tactic all afternoon, more clearly deployed at other moments; note when Clyne took a kick from behind when being chased down and hoofing it out of play - Foy wasn't interested. Note how many bookings we had against the Toons big fat ZERO.
Poch was correct, Saints did not get any decisions from Foy in the whole match he was so one sided. But then I believe they have won their last 3 or 4 home games with him I charge.

The referee and linesman missed their 2nd goal scorer coming from an offside position FACT
Shaw was illegally manoeuvred off the ball going for a clearing header during the same goal FACT
Fox should not have raised his arms trying to block a cross for the penalty IDIOT
Fox should have seen the huge Hoover in front of him and cleared with his right, not his left TW AT.

Did I read somewhere that Forren can pay at left back? Where is he? Apparently he's now fit but wasn't selected in the 19 players who travelled to Newcastle. Here's my assessment of the players:
Boruc did okay, unlucky to concede four.
Today, Fox did no worse than Shaw. who had one of his worst games of the season.
Clyne struggled in the first half but was better in the second.
Yos played quite well but he needs to improve his distribution.
Poor Jos, played okay but for his latest bit of bad luck.
Cork and Spiderman weren't at their best and Cork's poor ball out ofn the defence contributed to one of their goals.
JayRod was ineffective, no more, no less - lest we forget, he was pretty good against the League Champions, as was Fox, no?
Davis worked tirelessly, maybe that's why he was subbed - warn out - I don't know.
Adam doesn't seem quite match fit to me.
Punch and Ramirez both gave their all when they came on, and Ramirez will be fine once he mans up a bit - he's still young ..... so is JayRod.
Those who constantly knock Guly, you got your wish, he didn't make the bench. Maybe he'd have been a better option protecting Shaw (and Fox).

He is not always the reason for the goals that we concede but all to often he is the one who has a massive input in our defensive failings.
I posted last season that saints will concede more than our fair share if he is our left back in the prem,as
he will be targeted.
I know his supporters say that his crossing and set plays are an asset to us,my argument is that his defensive duties are by far more important and unfortunately this is his achilles heal.
It has been no coincidence that since Luke Shaw has been in the team that our results have been much more consistant.
I know this all sounds like hindsight and that we are unable to change anything now to bring in an alternative but it is time now to say thanks but no thanks Danny you have more than fair share of tries.
Extremely dissapointed at our loss today.
Lets hope the manager learns a lot from this to lift our team and then
take QPR to the cleaners on saturday.

The problem is if Luke doesn't play who does? I thought Fox did ok agains t City. I think it's harsh to castigate him today for reasons I've given. Did I read somewhere that Forren can pay at left back? Where is he? Apparently he's now fit but wasn't selected in the 19 players who travelled to Newcastle. The 19th player was Richardson who didn't make the squad today.
It'll be interesting to see the selection against QPR. On today's showing I wonder whether Lallana will start. Puncheon IMO has to.

So, even though we didn't play as well as we have done recently, we lose at Toon only because of a bit of an unlucky (though correct) pen and a deflected own goal. In a match in which we played some decent footy but looked rusty and had a lot of our thrust taken away because an inept ref didn't protect our players while giving the Toon all the protection they needed, and all of a sudden there are peeps on here telling Poch how to do his job, that he picked the wrong players, made the wrong subs and employed the wrong tactics.

Of course the team needs strengthening and that will come in the summer. I just don't understand why we never actually sell anyone. He did a good job for us then. But he has not developed his game like Sir Rickie, and is nowhere near good enough for the Premier League. So he has been loaned out to 2 different League One clubs this year, where he has managed just a handful of goals. Clearly he will never play for our first team again, even if we go down this season. So why is he still on our payroll? Just sell him. This is just one of several examples.
I watched the game in the pub. They had two penalty shouts for handball in the first half and I felt that would have a bearing if there was a third - which sadly there was. Watch it again, it was ball to hand from a yard away, there is no way you could possibly get your hand out of the way in time! Of course the team needs strengthening and that will come in the summer. Well I don't think it is at all “obvious” that we will avoid relegation. What does seem "obvious" to me is that the "pressing game", while leading to exciting open play, is a very one-dimensional strategy, and MP has no other ideas. It only takes a couple of players to have a bad game (J-Rod! Fox!!), or for the opposing team to work out a way to bypass the "press" and counter-attack, and we have no plan B. A vital game coming up next week and I don't doubt that Twitchy SatchelFace will be studying the video of today's game VERY closely.

We love these adventures, we try to do one per season. It started with a surprise trip up to Carlisle 3 years ago, then it was Hartlepool, then Blackpool, now Newcastle. They're far better travelled in the UK than I was at their age, that's for sure.
I think, including Bournemouth (friendly), Reading, Coventry and Leicester, this makes 7 aways for the lads but it keeps getting harder to get tickets and, aside from 0-0 at Hartlepool, our distant travel success is rubbish.
Still, we met up with 3 regulars from on here (RisingSon, Warrens and his mate ...... um ...... can't think what his log in is, sorry). Anyway, it was great to meet them.

Well said Poch! We will stay up, end of story. As I have previously said Danny Fox is not Premiership standard and really should be got rid of in the summer along with Do Prado.
I liked the way we played today, we look so much more dangerous under Poch. A lethal dose of Danny was our undoing but long term things look very positive with NC and Poch calling the shots.

It was not necessarily Adkins buying and selling players - Saints have a Head of Football Development and Support, a member of the board of directors, called Les Reed.
"Recruitment" is one his four areas of responsibility. I'm sure Adkins had influence, made suggestions and requests, but ultimately the buck stops with Reed.
One of the reasons Pardew was sacked was because he couldn't work with Reed. Pardew is more of an old school mananger in charge of recruitment, not a head coach who reports to a director of football.
Saints fundamentally do not operate a system where the manager controls transfer policy - it makes sense because it creates continuity and the club recruit a certain type of player that fits the club's footballing philosophy.
It aims to avoid the situation where a manager leaves and his replacement has to overhaul the squad because he's inherited players who're not his type of players. When this manager leaves, his successor does likewise and so on.
This is why Saints did badly with Rupert Lowe's revolving door manager policy - it's not such a problem for Cortese when he wields the axe because the replacements fit into an existing system rather than coming in and changing the system.
We should also remember Cortese clearly has a lot of influence over signings - remember the attempt to sign Del Piero at the start of the season? Hardly Adkins' idea. It was motivated by Cortese's belief in potential income generation from his signing as well as, I'm sure, a bit of ego.
I have little doubt Do Prado was a Cortese signing as well although Reed must have agreed. (A signing I actually think was a good one).
Ultimately it will be Reed and Cortese who bring in new players - successes or failures - with input from Pochettino or whoever succeeds him.

Before we move to the demolition of QPR ... I stand by the points made yesterday at the Service Station heading South.
1) DEFENCE Needs Sorting !!
2) MP needs to be know his Players and be able to grade their quality and put in where Danny Fox and Jos Hooiveld (how many own goals ?) sit in that Table.
3) The CENTRE- BACK PAIRING need fixing with the best that we have in the Squad. (Let's have Jose Fonte and let's try on the Training ground our January Signing)
4) Alan Shearer (who normally likes Southampton - but prefers Newcastle) gave an analysis about SAINTS. It wasn't much of an analysis - BUT goes to reinforce what fans were posting yesterday about tactics.
2-2 and then switching to getting men behind the ball as an option to flooding men forward PERMANENTLY and be susceptable throughout the game to the Counter. There must be variations and not just Plan A.
Admire MP was wanting to WIN and agree that their last 2 goals were almost gifts - but he will be credited as being no better than NIGEL if we cannot record results consistently against sides we are capable of getting a result from.

Yes, the Puncheon not starting ploy was a puzzle. I, like most am still waiting to see what Ramirez can offer, hasn't convinced me that he is worth all that money, yet. However what is done is done, draw the line move on and let us discuss how we are going to deal with the wrinkly one and his QPR menace.
Three key points I'd like to make. Firstly, he brought on Danny Fox. Schoolboy error. That lad is not Premier League material. All those 'fans' moaning at Nigel for his subs earlier in the season, low and behold your saviour. MoPo lost us that game. Secondly, he put Puncheon on the bench. Erm... what? He's been incredible for us this season! And you put him on the bench? Schoolboy mark 2. And finally, we've lost as many games in 5 under MoPo as we did in 12 under Nige. In conclusion: One Nigel Adkins!

I just don't understand why we never actually sell anyone. We have a lot of players on the wage roll that are very good for the Championship and Div1 and would be desirable to any team aspiring to promotion yet we just loan them out. Sell them on and reduce the squad ffs!
They will all see out their contracts on decent wages that most championship clubs could never match, they go out on loan knowing they'll still be paid in full.
Gone are the days when Brian Clough would say to a player, " clear your locker young man, you've been sold to Preston north End "

As for Luke, I was under the impression that on top of the yellow, he had a knock, which is why he cam off as he wasn't moving properly?
The reports also say he has a knock, but will hopefully be fit for next week? Is it only me that read this? Or did I miss something?
Attack wise, we weren't ourselves, but in patches Adam looked excellent, and Rickie was his usual self.
Bit concerned that Jay still not looking good enough to be a starter, maybe better on the bench? And Gaston I think is one we'll not see the true best of until next season.
Still, I look at as a game where the ref was a shambles, we gave away 2 soft goals and a soft penalty, and the other was a wonder strike that he'd hit the target like that once in 20 attempts, so still think we shouldn't get too down.
Against QPR, and with their chins up, I can see us putting ourselves pretty healthily clear of the mess below us.

Likewise to Spider on his rise and rise in this league, great contribution with another goal.
Where is Forren? What role did we buy him for?
Can he play instead of Hoover or Fox?
Gaston has been a dead end who tries to run the ball through 3 defenders every game and never makes it. Can he not learn to pass or hold the ball for others?
Puncheon should have started and where is the new contract he deserves?
Lalana great in patches, Rodriguez absent yesterday.
Still the same defensive frailties we had in the autumn - why has the manager not fixed them?

It's always a hard place to get a result and it's possibly the best Toon squad since the Keegan era.
On top of that, we've not mentioned the pitch, which I think had a part to play in the outcome (maybe the reason for Cork's error) and, of course, the ref, who couldn't handle the immense pressure placed on him by the most one-eyed fans I can ever remember being amongst.

Other than that, I agree. I think that NA would have saved us, but i also think MP will make it happen, as well. NC are a very good team, in a low table position because of the European duties. And we are an even better team, in a low position due to our disastrous first 10 games. None of us should be down there, and we won't.

Anyone who believes that it is, is either deluding themselves or is a fool.
The opportunity to buy a decent goalkeeper in January was lost, Forren hasn't played,
Cortese's answer was to sack the best Saints manager we've ever had and bring in a non-English speaking managerial failure from the Spanish League.
With those decisions it is pretty obvious to me that Saints have a fight on their hands to stay up ---just replicate MP's record during his time with Saints and project that forward over the remaining games.
If Saints are relegated it will be the fault of one man -- Cortese and for once he should sack himself and not everyone around him!

I agree CB but I just find it funny people jumping to conclusions after 1 defeat at times yesterday we played very well and could/should have come away with something. That said if we lose next weekend I may start to worry
what was it baden-powell taught us all those years ago.be prepared. MP has got the team playing well but in his five games in charged we have got 5 points.
if we had won yesterday we would have jumped above Sunderland as well as pulling away from the toon and the 4 bottom teams.
MP'S record of a point a game would over a season give us 38 points.this season 38 points might be enough to avoid the drop.in other years it wouldn't be good enough.
The matches we have to win are against our relegation rivals.
Adkins lost at home to wigan, beat villa home and away, beat qpr away, and newcastle and reading at home.15 points out of 18 was good going. mp has drawn at wigan and lost at newcastle.1 out of six is a bad return in my book...he has a great chance to make it 4 out of 9 when we play qpr.then later on in the season he has to beat reading.Of course a few wins and the odd draw against other teams will be most welcome.i think that the only teams who will probably beat us between now and the end of the season are spurs and chelsea.but lets hope we win all of our remaing games.

Yes, the Puncheon not starting ploy was a puzzle. I, like most am still waiting to see what Ramirez can offer, hasn't convinced me that he is worth all that money, yet. The Solent commentators during the game were also constantly criticising the inconsistency of the Referee, Hoy, so I guess, despite the obvious bias, he did have a bit of a homer moment. However what is done is done, draw the line move on and let us discuss how we are going to deal with the wrinkly one and his QPR menace.
I think Dave got it wrong- it was cos he was on a booking and looking like he may get another. So I understand taking Luke off, but you either move Yosh to left back and put on Fonte to play at CB or you move Clyne to the left and Cork to RB. MoPo is too reluctant to change a gameplan mid-game, whereas Nigel would be more willing to adjust. Ref did have a shocker. Second goal was never a free kick and then Cisse was offside. I do agree in regards to Ramirez however. And yes we need to draw a line under it (Good ole' Nigel's philosophy!) but it is difficult to swallow when the game could have been so different had it not been for Foy and some schoolboy tactics from MoPo

yesterdays result was down to bad luck and some poor refereeing decisions. saints played some good football. I don't read anything into this defeat because the way we have been playing will be too good for teams like QPR, Reading and shoud be good enough for wins against WHU, Stoke and WBA as well. I also think we will beat Liverpool and win at least one of the away games against Norwich, Swansea, Sunderland. 48-49 pts is easily do-able comfortably avoiding the drop.
boy errors are a continuous problem however in al my years of watching Saints I have never known a season with so, so, so many bad refeerieng decisions..
..every team believes it is hard done by but this season we really have not had the rub of the green..

Having said that, it wasn't a penalty, as far as I know the official rule still is 'ball to hand', which it wasn't.
Their 2nd was offside despite what the clowns from MOTD2 think.
Surely Puncheon has to be a better option than JRod who looks lightweight to me.
A game we should have won comfortably but poor finishing, Fox, and awful refereeing (again) cost us.

Pity there was a bit of a c0ck up on the dinner front, but we'll get better organised next time.
BEER MONSTER, sorry we failed to meet up. Having eaten brunch in town (where we met the Saints' mascot with his parents - hope you had a fab day, whoever you are) we wandered a bit and nearly went into the Strawberry, but it looked way too busy so we headed back down the hill to the Three Bulls Heads.
Sunderland away will be a high possibility for our mad adventure next season. It's all going to be so much easier in a couple of years and beyond when we're regularly playing Bayern Munich, PSG and the Northern Italian giants.
