Fox on standby as Shaw battles injury

LUKE SHAW LUKE SHAW

Luke Shaw is a doubt for Saints ahead of tomorrow’s game against QPR.

The teenage left back was forced off during last weekend’s defeat at Newcastle with a knock and was replaced by the unfortunate Danny Fox, who gave away a penalty and clattered the ball against Jos Hooiveld for an own goal.

Fox is on standby to come into the team from the start against QPR and put that behind him.

Mauricio Pochettino also has to think about whether to shuffle things around with his forward players, having left Jason Puncheon and Gaston Ramirez on the bench for the game against the Magpies.

Jose Fonte is also pushing for a recall at the heart of defence.

Pochettino is well aware of the importance of the QPR game and the chance it gives his side to pull further away from danger.

His opposite number, Harry Redknapp, believes that 37 points will keep a side in the Premier League season.

If Saints were to defeat QPR they would have to amass just seven points from their remaining ten games to hit that figure.

Pochettino though is more cautious.

“We haven’t set ourselves a certain amount of points,” he said through his translator.

“We have just set out to win every single match and then at the end of the season we will look at how close we came to achieving the ambitions we have.”

Pochettino has clearly heard plenty about the open sore with Saints fans that is the Redknapp era but is urging the fans to keep behind his side as well this weekend.

“I do know the past of Southampton, but I do not know every single detail of what happened,” the Argentinian said.

“I am always interested in football matters so I have become interested in this matter as well.

“But I think my main goal is always to generate a positive atmosphere for my team and always respect what the people say.

“I will thoroughly respect whatever they want to say on Saturday, but I think what is truly important is that they get behind the team and push us to try and get the three points as best as we can.”

It is now six weeks since Pochettino replaced fans’ favourite Nigel Adkins at the Saints helm.

The former Espanyol boss is getting into the swing of things and is impressed by the level of support he receives.

“It is very different to being in Barcelona,” he said. “Joking aside, we (the coaching staff) are very happy to be here.

“We have found ourselves in a very tranquil city, a very calm place during the week.

“We spend from 7am to 8pm at the training ground so we don’t get to see much of the city, but it is true that we experience football in a much more intense way here.

“We are very aware of the passion of the English fans and of those in the Premier League.

“I think every game we have played at St Mary’s we have felt that warmth and kindness from the fans.

“So far so good, we have just experienced good things so far.”

I am not a Fox basher but.........

Surely Forren would do a job there and even Matt Targett.

Punch Adam and Gaston up front.

Jose and Yos to pair up in defence.

Smash saggy chops - 4-1 COYR

i however AM a Fox basher. The bloke is a complete liability. I would much rather we do what we did against Villa and bring Richardson in at RB and play Clyne at left back, or indeed give Forren a chance to show why we paid what we did for him and push Yoshida out to LB. I really hope Fox doesn't play, we cant afford to lose this game.

Got to bring back Punch no question.. If Fox plays god help us! I agree we should bring Forren in but would also like to see Fonte back (sorry Jos)... Punch on the right, AL on the left, Spiderman & Cork Centre, RL up top with Gaston floating behind...simples!!

If you look at the OS Gallery showing pre match training you will see Matt Targett training with the first team, Forren is also an alternative at Left Back, MP will make the decision and let's hope it is a good one.

Luke Shaw if fit, is a must.
If not, this leaves us with the "UNFORTUNATE DANNY FOX" as he is now known to the Echo.
His displays for Saints have been consistently average, interspersed with disasterous.
I have always supported all players that pull on a Saints shirt.
IMO. Dan puts in 100% effort for Saints.
Unfortunately effort is not enough.
How many times this season have we benefitted from his attacking prowess?-----Not many!
Or be undermined by his poor defending?---- Often!
He has and will be targeted by teams as a week link.
I remember Ferguson calling across Valencia and vigorously pointing at Dan Fox, this season at SMS,it was obvious why.
For obvious reasons he is Lukes' alternative, but I feel it didn't have to be.
Unfortunately due to the poor assessment of Dan Harding, the previous management sold our only other left back to Notts Forest.

I think time is ticking for Dan Fox.
I really want to see him lift his game and be seen to be able to play consistently in the prem.
Here's hoping.

Forren is a left footer and is supposedly a quality solid defender,or so they say as we havent been given chance to see what we spent £4million on.
Surley now is the time to give his chance!!
It is only QPR after all so it should be a nice easy game to make his debut :)
PLEASE DONT PLAY FOX.

After seeing what Newcastle did to us last week, both full backs are possibly going to be put under extreme pressure which means that our two wide men are going to have to give more cover to whoever plays.
Saying that, I suspect that QPR will be happy with a point and wont be attacking much, but any team can be dangerous on the break.

QPR have probably gone past the stage where a point will do, it's a must win for them so we should expect an onslaught. Our defence cost us last week, hope they don't do it again.

Why bash Foxy if ,as you say ,he's not up to the job then surely it's the fault of the man who put him on the pitch ! In his defence I will say he's the only one who acknowledges all the kids in the family stand every time he takes a corner. It's only a couple of weeks ago people were saying on here Saints should do more for the kids. Some awareness that they are at St Mary's would be a start.

My sentiments entirely. Spot on post.
He was the only player to have an average game against man city!

Will Fox play, won’t he?
That’s not my biggest worry.
Will Loic Remy be fit and start?
Will Adel Taarabt blow hot or cold?
That’s the only 2 slight concerns for me.

St Mary's isn't a crèche!

By all means engage with the kids/fans more at the end of the game but not during the game. The players should be 100% focused on what they are there to do.

Surely it would be a better option playing Clyne at LB and Richardson at RB?

Fox isn't god enough at this level - he is a decent Chamionship player and did well last season but isn't up to the standard we now require.

The boss will pick, the best time to win on Saturday. We also must not, till the other teams are players that are out unfit or what.

Please, anybody but Fox, he's too slow and gets caught out of position far too often.
Surely Yoshida or Forren at LB with Fonte in the centre is a better option.
Puncheon should start in place of Rodriguez as well, thus giving Clyne an easier time behind him

We just as well give em the game if Fox
is at left back ,!!!
He should be "left back" in the DRESSING ROOM .............. it would be safe to play with 10 men

Sorry people, if Fox is selected you have to back him to the hilt, you must encourage him, if you unsettle him you will be as guilty of upsetting the apple cart if he has a mare. Your choice, your conscience.

I don't know who will play this w/e at LB but as sure as d4mn it, he'll have my support.

I don't particularly rate Fox at this level but, before we nail him up, has anyone mentioned that Shaw didn't exactly excel when Newcastle tapped in their first last week?

A bit of balance isn't too much to ask, is it?
