Saints on this day – March 1

1947: Plymouth 2 Saints 3 Thomas Lewis netted twice, including an 84th minute winner, as Saints fought back from 2-1 down to snatch victory at Home Park in Division Two.

Defender Joseph Mallet also scored on his league debut for Saints – the only one he netted that season.

Lewis finished the season as Saints’ top scorer with 12.

1952: Saints 2 Blackburn 1 Saints’ ended Rovers’ superb run of form as they suffered their first defeat in 11 games after ten wins and a draw prior to arriving at The Dell.

Goals from Walter Judd and James McGowan put Saints 2-0 ahead in this Division 2 encounter.

1958: Shrewsbury 1 Saints 3 A hat-trick from Derek Reeves helped Saints record a comfortable win at Gay Meadow in Division Three (South).

Reeves opened the scoring in the 18th minute and doubled his tally in the 56th. He completed his hat-trick as he swept home from a John Hoskins free-kick.

Reeves ended the 1957/58 season with 31 goals in 42 appearances, including three hat-tricks.

1969: Leeds 3 Saints 2 Saints became the first team to score twice at Elland Road in the 1968/1969 season thanks to consolations from Mick Channon and Jimmy Gabriel netted.

Leeds went onto win the Division One title, six points clear of Liverpool.

1975: Blackpool 3 Saints 0 Keeper Eric Martin and Bobby McCarthy played their final games for the Saints as they were crushed at Bloomfield Road.

1981: Saints 1 West Brom 1 Graham Baker levelled for Lawrie McMenemy’s men after Cyrille Regis had put the visitors ahead just minutes before half-time.

1986: Saints 1 Manchester United 0 Glenn Cockerill netted an 81st minute strike as Saints stunned Ron Atkinson’s United in a Division One clash at a snowy Dell.

1988: Saints 1 Newcastle 1 Colin Clarke netted one of his 16 goals in the 1987-1988 campaign to give Saints the lead. Newcastle levelled five minutes from time.

1997: Newcastle 0 Saints 1 Matt Le Tissier scored the only goal as Greaeme Souness’ Saints secured a vital three points on Tyneside.

Saints flirted with the Premier League relegation zone for most of the season before finishing 16th, just one point clear of the drop zone.

2003: Saints 1 West Brom 0 James Beattie notched his 19th League goal of the season as he smashed home a 25-yard effort in the eighth minute.

2005: Brentford 1 Saints 3 Saints came from behind thanks to two goals from Peter Crouch and another from Kevin Phillips as they beat Brentford at Griffin Park in an FA Cup fifth round replay.

The two divisions lower Bees had previously held Harry Redknapp’s Saints to a 2-2 draw at St Mary’s.

Saints run in the competition came to an end in the next round as they suffered a 4-0 home defeat to beaten finalists Manchester United.

2008: Saints 1 Ipswich 1 Stern John fired Saints into a 51st minute lead as they struggled for form in the Championship.

The lead didn’t last long as David Norris levelled five minutes later.

2011: Walsall 1 Saints 0 Nigel Adkins’ Saints suffered a rare defeat as they left the Bescot Stadium empty handed after a Jon Macken strike 20 minutes from time.

This defeat was just one of two losses in Saints’ final 21 League games.

They were to extract revenge on the final day of the season two months later as a 3-1 win confirmed their promotion to the Championship.
