Saints On This Day - March 5 1949: Coventry 2 Saints 2 Saints moved five points clear at the top of Division Two after this point at Highfield Road.
Charlie Wayman Saints in front on 13 minutes before Coventry levelled.
Wayman’s form was impressive this season as he finished with 32 League goals in just 37 appearances.
Saints second goal was a penalty from Bill Ellerington which was again cancelled out by their hosts.
1955: Newport County 0 Saints 1 Saints travelled to Newport sitting third in Division Three (South) knowing they needed a win to keep the pressure on table toppers Bristol City. In a scrappy game, they got it thanks to Johnny Walker’s 13th goal of the season in the 15th minute.
1960: Saints 3 York 1 Saints made it 11 consecutive home wins in front of a 20,000 plus attendance at The Dell. George O’Brien and Brian Clifton ensured York’s first ever visit to Southampton was a miserable one.
1966: Saints 0 Birmingham 1 With a free weekend after an early FA Cup exit, Saints decide to arrange this fixture after it was originally postponed in November.
It didn’t go to plan. Saints had plenty of chances, but couldn’t convert them in what was Tommy Hare’s final appearance for Saints.
1974: Saints 1 Derby 1 Ally MacLeod set up Mick Channon to fire the Saints in front on what was to turn out to be MacLeod’s final game in a Saints shirt. Sadly, Henry Newton grabbed a last minute leveller for the Rams and Saints were relegated from the old First Division a few weeks later.
1977: Saints 2 Charlton 1 Saints fought back from a goal down to win this Second Division encounter at The Dell. Ted McDougall levelled, with one of his 23 league goals that season, before full-back Manny Andruszewski crashed the ball home for only his second goal of the season. Austin Hayes made his debut for the club as a sub.
1983: Saints 2 Swansea 1 Again, Saints hit back to win after Jimmy Loveridge had put the soon-to-be-relegated Swans ahead. Ian Baird levelled on 62 minutes and David Armstrong prodded home the second 13 minutes from time.
1988: Watford 0 Saints 1 A Kevin Moore goal on the stroke of half-time gave Saints victory at a Watford side who were bottom of the First Division.
1994: Leeds 0 Saints 0 Saints travelled to Elland Road sitting uncomfortably close to the Premier League trap door. A battling display from Alan Ball’s men saw them leave Yorkshire with a valuable point in their eventually successful fight.
1997: Saints 2 Everton 2 Everton raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to early goals from Duncan Ferguson and the late Gary Speed.
Robbie Slater arrived from the bench to half the deficit just two minutes before Everton defender Craig Short put through his own goal.
Striker Mickey Evans make his first appearance for Saints from the substitute bench.
2005: Saints 1 Tottenham 0 Nigel Quashie’s goal in the 51st minute was enough to give Harry Redknapp’s Saints victory over Tottenham at St Mary’s. Despite this win, Saints couldn’t drag themselves clear of the Premier League relegation zone and were subsequently relegated to the Championship.
2007: Preston 3 Saints 1 Two late goals, including an own goal from Chris Baird, condemned Saints to a disappointing defeat at Deepdale in the Championship. Grzegorz Rasiak hit a consolation for George Burley’s play-off chasers.
2010: Saints 2 Leyton Orient 1 Adam Lallana scored twice as Saints began a run of four straight League 1 wins as they came from behind. John Spicer stunned the St Mary’s crowd when he opened the scoring inside two minutes before Lallana netted two of his 15 league goals that season.
2011: Colchester 0 Saints 2 Goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Dean Hammond gave Saints victory in Essex. That began a run of four straight victories in a devastating late-season spell that saw Nigel Adkins’ men lose just once in their final 15 games as they secured promotion back to the Championship.
