SCOTT Cousins took time-trial honours at Woodham Walter.
Maldon and District Cycling Club’s road season opened on Sunday with their annual promotion of a hilly 18-mile time-trial, based at Woodham Walter and featuring two ascents of North Hill, Little Baddow.
Following the extreme weather conditions over the winter, the roads used for the course were in better condition than could have been expected, so riders did not have to face the hazards of potholes which have appeared in many local roads. The fastest rider on the day was Cousins who posted a time of 46 minutes five seconds.
Cousins is a former Maldon member who has switched to the sponsored St Ives team over the winter in order to pursue national honours in time-trial championships.
Although a non-Maldon rider took first place, it was a club member, in the form of rapidly-improving junior, George Wood who took second place with a very impressive 46m 43s.
First year senior Simon Alexander, from Southend Wheelers, took the final podium position with 47m 21s.
Maldon’s day continued on a high when the team rankings were calculated.
George Wood was supported by Hamish Hore and Adrian Tovey, clocking 49m 20s and 49m 22s respectively to give Maldon the team prize by a narrow margin over East London Velo.
