PETE Stevens believes he has a lot more to offer and would love another crack at Tenbury Rugby Club's captaincy next term.

Stevens will be skippering Tenbury for the last time this season against struggling Barton-under-Needwood on Saturday.

The Palmer's Meadow clash is Tenbury’s penultimate Midlands Four West North fixture.

Stevens is missing Tenbury’s final league match of the season - at Cannock on April 20 - because of a wedding.

“I have enjoyed my first season as captain but I know that I can give a lot more on and off the pitch next season,”

said Stevens.

“I am sure there will be a lot to discuss at the annual general meeting but we have got a very good, hungry squad and we have seen some good players come in this season.”

Stevens thinks a couple of new additions to Tenbury’s squad over the summer would turn them into genuine promotion candidates.

He would also like to entice former skipper Pete Phillips back to the fray in a coaching capacity.

“Luke Brittain used to play football and he has been an asset, while Andrew Wilkes and Ben Bridges have come from Worcester and Chuck Parry has returned to action,” said Stevens. “We were second for a long time but we suffered a few defeats at crucial times and we're now going to finish fourth.

“We have some superb freerunning backs and the forwards have done everything asked of them. I am sure that, with a couple of new faces, we will definitely be pushing for promotion next season.

“I have had a couple of chats with Pete Phillips and I would like to get him involved in a coaching role.

“I think he’s pretty much retired as a player.”

Tenbury have not played in the league since a 45-9 defeat at table-topping Market Drayton on March 9.

But Stevens and some of his Tenbury team-mates have turned out for Ludlow Seconds in a nar row friendly win at Luctonians.

Although Barton are fighting for league survival, Stevens says Tenbury will not be showing them any mercy this weekend.

Barton pipped Tenbury 23-22 in a thrilling match in December.

Stevens said: “We might only have pride to play for now but we will be looking to upset Barton and send them home with their tails between their legs.

“We have got a fantastic team spirit and we have had some great nights at Penlu this season.

“We will be looking to have another top night on Saturday.”
