A RUN of one draw and two defeats from their last three games has not stopped Swindon Town believing they can reach the Championship this season, according to on-loan full-back Nathan Byrne.

The Robins sit sixth in the table with four games of their campaign left to play, prior to a difficult trip to Sheffield United this weekend, with Walsall, Tranmere and MK Dons all hot on the heels of Kevin MacDonald’s faltering side.

Seven points from their remaining fixtures would almost certainly secure Town a top-six finish, and Byrne has stressed that self-belief is still strong in the Swindon squad.

“When we came in we knew what the task was and we’re still on that task now,” he said.

“We’ve had three very tough games but everyone still has the same mentality and we all want to go forward and make it to the Championship.”

Byrne was brought in as cover to Nathan Thompson and Jay McEveley but has quickly found himself become a regular starter after both players were ruled out for the rest of the term through injury.

The Tottenham youngster has been happy with his performances thus far and he feels he is standing up well to the physical test League One offers.

“The manager told me to come in and do what I’ve been doing in reserve team football and he’s said he’s happy with me so far,” he said.

“I just want to plug away and dig deep and try to get the boys where they want to go.

“Every game’s a battle in League One and on their day anyone can beat anyone. You’ve always got to be on it and be ready from the start. The boys know that.

“It’s a completely different physical level to reserve football but I’m enjoying my time here. When I came here and looked at the last seven games we had I knew they were very tough.”
