After a busy morning, wrestling with other music fans for rare vinyls on Record Store Day, I decided to treat myself to a quiet and relaxing lunch at the Three Daggers.

The pub, in the quaint village of Edington, Westbury, was the perfect location on what was a beautiful, sunny day, with the main dining area providing a nice view of the nearby park area.

Following a long study of the lunch menu, I finally decided to go for the hand-torn free range happy chicken caesar sandwich, with a side helping of triple-cooked chips.

The 8oz sirloin steak, also served with triple-cooked chips, plus roast mushrooms and blue cheese sauce, was also very tempting, at a fairly reasonable £19, but I decided to save it for another occasion.

As I waited for my meal to arrive, the dining area began to get much busier as the lunchtime rush started to filter through. However, the waitress remained very attentive and, before I knew it, my food had arrived.

My meal was presented on a wooden slab, which was quite an interesting and pleasant touch; one that was in keeping with the rest of the understated decor.

The sandwich was excellent and the description could not have been more fitting, with the chicken pieces very succulent and tasty. The lettuce was crisp and fresh, while the caesar dressing and thin slices of cheese were bursting with flavour.

The bread was soft, with a crunchy crust. All-in-all, the sandwich was pretty much everything I could ask for, even though the £6.50 price seemed slightly expensive for the size.

The side helping of triple-cooked chips (£3) was a very welcome addition, filling the gap that had not quite been met by the sandwich.

They were cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside and soft inside, with the seasoning also well-judged. As chips go, they don’t get much better.

The sandwich was accompanied by lettuce and a tomato cut in half, which was very fresh, but rather on the small side to be classed as a salad.

The meal came to £12, including a pint of lemonade, which I thought was reasonable considering the high quality of the food.

I would be happy to return to the Three Daggers, with its tasty local produce and friendly staff making it one of the best places to eat in Westbury.
