Saints won't sell young stars like Bale

Daily Echo: James Ward-Prowse - one of the young players Saints want to keep James Ward-Prowse - one of the young players Saints want to keep

Mauricio Pochettino insists Gareth Bale would NOT be sold if he were still a Saints player now.

The Welshman was first spotted as an eight-year-old by the then head of Saints’ satellite academy in bath, Rod Ruddick, and immediately joined the club.

He rose through the ranks and burst into the first team before Tottenham landed him in a £7m swoop almost six years ago.

The 23-year-old has become one of the world’s best since moving to north London in 2007 and this week picked up a clean sweep of gongs for the season's standout player.

However, Pochettino is adamant that Bale would not be sold if he were a Saint these days.

“With this current club’s ambition, dedication and vision for the future, it would be very hard for Gareth Bale to leave this club,” said the Argentinian, who last week spoke of his Champions League ambitions.

“Right now, our mentality is to keep our best players and we spoke about that with Nicola (Cortese) from the first day. We want to keep our greatest talents but at the same time now we need more time in order to develop our greatest talents as it happened with Bale, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Walcott.

“Now we need to be able to keep our greatest players, our greatest talents like Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse, in order for them to develop their football and become top footballers.

“It is a shame we don't have these three players available for Southampton now but that is our project for the future.”

Saints face the unenviable task of attempting to shackle Bale at White Hart Lane this afternoon and Pochettino, a former team-mate of Diego Maradona and Gabriel Batistuta, has been impressed by his form.

"He is a very decisive player - an amazing player because of his speed, strength and goalscoring abilities," the Southampton manager said.

"He has shown that throughout the season this year so I rate him very highly.

"Our collective game needs to be very strong tomorrow. We can't just focus on Gareth Bale - there are other players in that team that can raise their game.

"In a collective sense, we need to be very focused and mentally ready as we need to be in every single game that we play in the Premier League.

"We always need to be mentally focused as you never know."

The aforementioned Shaw will be fit to face Tottenham after overcoming a knee complaint - a welcome boost given his replacement at left-back, Danny Fox, starts a three-match ban after last weekend's red card.

Gaston Ramirez was another sent off in a heavy 3-0 defeat to West Brom, which will have no doubt impacted Southampton's fair play ranking.

Saints are in the running for a potential Europa League place via UEFA's Fair Play League but, like Liverpool, have confirmed they would not accept a place in the competition.

"We would not accept it either if we were awarded that possibility," Pochettino, speaking through his interpreter, said.

"We have spoken with the chairman and decided not to take that offer because I think in football what you are awarded in football needs to be earned on the pitch.

"We will only accept possibilities when we've earned them on the pitch and not just by fair play, but actually earning it with points and results."

WHAT? No East European tour if we qualify? That's not considering the needs of the fans at all! Even Osprey was going to lose his cherry.

Confucious get on to Mrs Wilson again (in a telephone sense) and offer to manage a Saints Echo Forum team during the early stages of the competition, well the first round, I'll be CEO. I'll go pack.

All last week it was rubbish about being good enough to play in Europe.Result, we got hammered by W B A.

This Saturday it is more rubbish about keeping our players.

Please lets accept that we just need to concentrate on getting enough points to stay in the premiership.

We will then have a long summer to speculate at a time when it really does not matter.

Oi! Seeds, you are making assumptions here, I have been to Eastern Europe in pursuit of my other hobby, and didn't rate it at all. That is another story. I think we will have to be a bit more patient for any European Football excursions, no harm in dreaming though. I think we have a good bunch of youngsters coming through the system, but fitting them in isn't going to be easy, especially if we bring in more overseas stars. Hopefully no prima donnas though, just players willing to become part of the team, rather than a bunch of disloyal gold diggers, I am putting my trust in NC and MP to get the right mix.

Bale is a one man team... close him down and there is no such thing as Tottenham Hotspur FC, as proved in recent weeks.

On the point of this article, it is good to here we won't be selling young players, we don't need to and it is just wasting our future away if we do.

Nicola sent her to Staplewood this morning to unblock one of the toilets which was reported to have a dead otter in it. Turned out it was just Punch who opened his bomb bay in there after training yesterday.

Anyhow, got her on her mobile. Bit of a downer though. She said "Apart from yourself, of course, Confucious, that lot on the Echo are all knitting with only one needle. If idiots could fly that forum would be an airport. If we took them to a European City they'd be drunk on landing and then head straight off to Tuna Town."

And if we keep Shaw on him, with Cork or Spider hanging off Shaw so they can reach him, he won't get one!

We should play compact as we cannot stop their attacks but counter and get the ball forward quickly when won.

Even if he does get an opportunity, we should always be in a position to stop that opportunity. The fact he is a one man team means the game revolves around him, so shutting him out means we will easily be the dominant force.

Maya or Fonte or Jos will be ready to move to left back when needed. When their gap becomes avaliable, Cork or Spider should push back to their position with the other hanging off the box so can move forward quickly when the ball is won.

In The Times today is says that Dr Fyodor Trushkin, the famous transplant surgeon wants to leave Russia. We should sign him up.

I think if did all we'd need is two new signings in the summer plus a selection of top quality frozen ankles, knees and hips. In particular we should get two really good complete left legs because we are dangerously deficient in this respect.

Mrs Wilson said she thought this was a great idea which she would pass on to Nicola - and that Dr Trushkin could also fit Punch up with a new tighter bomb bay door and sort out Nicola's issue with his unreliably floppy one-eyed flute.

Easy for you to say, but he only needs one opportunity!
And if we keep Shaw on him, with Cork or Spider hanging off Shaw so they can reach him, he won't get one!

And presumably Boruc will fill the gap created when Maya or Fonte or Jos move to fill the gap created when Shaw marks Bale on the right, or would you suggest an even better idea might be to move Rickie and Rodriguez into that gap?

Regarding the quote that Saints already have two players as good as signed and two others in the pipeline.
There is an extremely good left back playing for the youth and he deserves a chance, unfortunately the player in front of him is Luke Shaw!
JWP has already shown he is capable of playing Prem league, but when can he gett a game? Spider and Jack are the strongest part of the team.
There has to be a vacancy for them to step into and it takes a very brave manager to drop a regular player and try a young player.
If the youngster doesn't crack it first time, how long does he keep trying?

ask the seven players today who are between 17 and 24 and will appear for Saints. Its not about eleven players but a squad.
yes I think the only delay on two signings is for us to be mathematically safe. Another two possibly coming. This would give us a stronger squad and the ability to change the first eleven to best deal with the opposition.
Bale doesn't really play left anymore he is most dangerous coming straight down the middle.
spurs are by no means a one man team, he maybe their best player, but he is not a one man team.

Easy for you to say, but he only needs one opportunity!
And if we keep Shaw on him, with Cork or Spider hanging off Shaw so they can reach him, he won't get one!

We should play compact as we cannot stop their attacks but counter and get the ball forward quickly when won.

Even if he does get an opportunity, we should always be in a position to stop that opportunity. The fact he is a one man team means the game revolves around him, so shutting him out means we will easily be the dominant force.
And, if Bale plays on the left (Spuds' left), who will cover the gap at left back?
Maya or Fonte or Jos will be ready to move to left back when needed. When their gap becomes avaliable, Cork or Spider should push back to their position with the other hanging off the box so can move forward quickly when the ball is won.
And presumably Boruc will fill the gap created when Maya or Fonte or Jos move to fill the gap created when Shaw marks Bale on the right, or would you suggest an even better idea might be to move Rickie and Rodriguez into that gap?
