After a pulsating second leg at Griffin Park, Brentford made it through to the League One playoff final at Wembley, defeating Swindon Town 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shootout on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Bees did it the hard way, after establishing a two goal cushion to lead 3-1 on the day, they allowed the Robins to draw level with a last minute equaliser which resulted in extra time and then a penalty shootout.

Brentford took the lead midway through the first half, a teasing corner from Harry Forrester being bundled into his own net by the unfortunate Adam Rooney.

The Bees enjoyed a spell of sustained pressure, forcing several corners, before Clayton Donaldson doubled their lead five minutes before the break when he turned on the edge of the box and fired into the bottom corner.

There was just enough time for the visitors to pull one back when Rooney struck from inside the box.

Donaldson extended his side’s lead two minutes into the second half with a superb solo goal which saw him break clear from the centre circle and chip the ball over the advancing Wes Foderingham from inside the box.

Yet Swindon came right back, with Joe Devera pulled one back approaching the hour mark when he fired past Simon Moore.

Despite substitute Sam Saunders hitting the crossbar from outside the box, the Bees looked to have done enough, until Gary Roberts’ corner was superbly headed home by Aden Flint in added on time.

Swindon lost Nathan Byrne to a red card following his second yellow card during extra time, but neither side could find the decisive goal, setting up the drama of a penalty shootout.

Brentford proved perfect from the spot, as Saunders, Paul Hayes, Harlee Dean and Tony Craig all converted before Miles Story missed for Swindon, allowing Adam Forshaw to convert and spark wild scenes of celebration.
