Boruc ends the season triumphant

Daily Echo: Artur Boruc Artur Boruc

Of all the players to run out at St Mary’s tomorrow for the final game of the season few have had as turbulent, but ultimately triumphant, a season as Artur Boruc.

The 33-year-old keeper was without a club until Saints came calling for his services in September.

His signing was a surprise, given that manager Nigel Adkins had both Kelvin Davis and Paolo Gazzaniga at his disposal, and proved that he wasn’t afraid to use either of them.

However, he clearly hadn’t settled on a regular number one.

That didn’t change much in the immediate aftermath of Boruc’s arrival.

Boruc made it into the team relatively quickly but had a horrible start as Saints continued to leak goals in their depressing opening to the campaign.

Boruc’s debut, a 4-1 defeat to West Ham, certainly wasn’t one to remember.

Things went from bad to worse as Boruc was accused of throwing a water bottle at Saints fans after an exchange of words as things continued to spiral.

The club suspended him pending an investigation but, when he was cleared to play again, it took him some time to win his place back in the team.

At that stage it seemed as if Boruc, who had only signed a contract until the end of the season, would be one of those players who would be a footnote in Saints history, the kind of person who plays a handful of games and then disappears, that in years to come supporters have forgotten ever even played for the club.

But that was not to be Boruc’s fate.

Instead he got handed another chance and has taken it empathically.Since the turn of the year all that chopping and changing has disappeared and he is without doubt the club’s number one, and has done so well the club have handed him a new two year deal to extend his stay still further.

A look at the stats is proof as if any were needed that Boruc has done well as Saints have improved.

Davis conceded 19 goals in eight starts, Gazzaniga 12 goals in nine starts and Boruc 28 in 20 starts – with six of those in his first two games and then just 22 in his last 18.

He's on the bench each week. Did well when he had to come on for the second half a few games back.

Kelvin is the Club Captain and is heavily involved every week, have you forgotten the cameo he played when Artur came back from the International break and was unable to start the 2nd half of a game, and it was a worldy that ensured that we got a result. Great news about the agreement, I knew if we protested enough on this site that they would come to their senses ; : )

Great news about club and think boruc penalty save against Norwich was a major turning point in our season as we would of lost 3 games on the bounce and lost much of our momentum in the season . Deserves some credit after a difficult start to his saints career and looks fitter / leaner and most definitely our number 1 choice.

Fantastic reading the club statement. Now we can party tomorrow and then watch as new signing come in over the next month to really show the ambition of the whole club from top down through Katharina Liebherr, Nicola Cortese, Mauricio Pochettino to the players and all the staff and lets not forget us fans. I hope the signings we make before 1st July will inspire and make even the doubters believe that truly exciting times are ahead. Onwards and upwards, forward together!

Boruc has done very well and upset the apple cart by doing as well as he has done.

Despite that those stats are really quite poor, for all of them, and Boruc will only be around a couple of years longer. We have the future settled in Gazzaniga but I am worried about our current conceded rate. We can blame lots of it on the defence (and Guly) but some of it has to be handed to the Goalkeeper. I would suggest signing a new keeper, perhaps Samir Ujkani from Chievo (he has caught the eye of the media this season), or someone like Asmir Begovic or Ben Foster until Gazzaniga can move into place. I would have Boruc on the bench and Kelvin in the reserves, and Gazzaniga should be be going on loan every season, preferably to a foreign place, to gain match experience.

Forget signing another goalkeeper. Boruc has proved he is number 1.We have Kelvin on the bench until Gazzaniga can vie for the number 1 spot. By all means strengthen the defence but leave the keepers as they are.

I can't be bothered to check, so I could be wrong, but if 22 from 18 starts means 'in all competitions', then it includes the 5 FA Cup goals against Chelsea, one of which was, I think, offside and a couple, I think, came after Fonte had to go off.

So, maybe that could read 17 from 17 LEAGUE starts.

Whichever way you read it, it's a case of lies, d4mn lies and statistics and, IMO, he's done pretty well since Chelsea.

Good goalkeeper, is Artur.

What shouldn't be overlooked is the confidence and calmness (except for at corners) that he has brought to the back four, and some very decisive saves he has made, when 1 on 1 with strikers.

Considering the fact I have been to every single Saints home game since 1986 (except for Chelsea this year), have missed only 24 away games in that time, and go to as many U-21 and U-18 games as I can to support the future Saints, I think we can safely say I am a die-hard Southampton supporter.

All I am trying to do is find the best places to strengthen the team to help us reach our ever-nearing reality of top-four and even Europe. It doesn't mean I am necessarily right, but it is my opinion. That is more that can be said for what YOU have posted on this thread.

So why don't you buck up your ideas and carry on supporting our team rather than trying to make out that users aren't Saints fans. Because that isn't what a real Saints fan does.

That is fair enough, I didn't read it that way. That isn't a bad conceding rate I suppose, and with a strengthened defence that could be even better.

I still think we need a back-up keeper to replace Kelvin, because he will be gone in a couple of years (retirement) and Gazza needs experience to become the best he can be.
