Saints legend Ron Davies has died.

The all-time great striker is understood to have passed away in hospital in Albuquerque, America, on Friday, a day short of his 71st birthday.

Saints paid a then club record fee of £55,000 when they recruited Davies from Norwich in August 1966, with the Welshman having started his career at Chester before moving to Luton and then the Canaries.

Few though could have imagined then the impact he would go on to have.

Davies was a legend for a generation of Saints fans, with his ability to hang in the air and score headed goals marking a prolific seven year stint at the club.

Davies went on to score 153 goals for the club in 281 appearances, and is still eighth in the list of Saints’ all time highest league goalscorers with 134.

Davies, who bagged a memorable four goal haul at Old Trafford, was described by legendary Manchester United manager Matt Busby as the best centre forward in Europe.

After an incredible spell at Saints under the management of Ted Bates, Davies moved on to Portsmouth in 1973 before an unsuccessful stint at United.

After doing the rounds at a couple lower league clubs the man capped 29 times by Wales moved to play in America and eventually settled there, living in a trailer park in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with his late wife Chris.
