TWENTY years ago today, Digby, Summerbee, Bodin, Hoddle, Calderwood, Taylor, Moncur, MacLaren, Mitchell, Ling, Maskell, White and Hazard propelled Swindon Town into the Premier League.

Three years previously, Town legitimately earned the right to play alongside the best teams in the country, and it was cruelly snatched away from them.

Remarkably Town managed to pick themselves up, and just a few years later, player/manager Glenn Hoddle led Swindon into the promised land.

The final has gone down in history as one of the most enthralling games ever played at the old Empire Stadium.

Glenn Hoddle's side bossed the first half, and went into half time 2-0 up.

Just eight minutes after the break Shaun Taylor headed Town into a 3-0 lead.

But within eleven crazy second half minutes, a spirited Leicester City side had fought their way back into the contest, and Town watched as their lead evaporate.

With just six minutes left, substitute Steve White was fouled by Foxes keeper Kevin Poole, which handed Paul Bodin a chance to take Swindon Town into the top division of English football for the first time in their history.

Thankfully Bodin held his nerve and slotted the ball into the bottom corner, cue wild celebrations from the Swindon end of Wembley.

A truly remarkable day, and one that corrected an injustice, and placed Town where they deserved to be.

Unfortunately my love affair with Swindon Town didn’t start until a year later at the age of nine, when I witnessed a very different Town team and performance.

But from what I’ve read, watched and listened to, it was truly a day in a million, and an occasion i still hope to see repeated one day.

If you want to relive that moment from Town's history, make sure you check out today's Swindon Advertiser, which includes interviews with many of the Town squad from that day.

Town’s summer transfer deals have already got underway, with most of the news focusing on players who could be leaving SN1.

Aden Flint’s £350K deal to Bristol City is still waiting to be officially announced but it looks like a done deal.

Ideally I’d like to see the young centre back stay in Swindon, but when a club offers that amount of money, you can’t turn it down.

Flint is great in the air, and he did form a good partnership with Darren Ward, but sometimes he could look like bambi on ice when trying to control the ball in defence, he’s certainly replaceable.

Hopefully at some point today we will get a definitive answer from Alan McCormack on his future at Swindon Town.

I’m a big admirer of the 29 year-old and would like to see him stay, but with Town only offering him a one-year deal and other clubs (i.e. Brentford) offering two, it’s hard to see him in a Town shirt next season.

On a positive note, Nathan & Louis Thompson signing new two-year deals with Town was great news, two exciting young players who should both make an impact in the first team next season.

With the English football season only finishing last Monday, there’s certainly no need to panic over the lack of action regarding players coming into the club.

I’m confident Jed McCrory & Kevin MacDonald have deals in mind, and i'm excited to see who the club signs over the coming months.
