WESTBURY captain Richard Oakley is hoping Wiltshire have been paying close attention to the early-season form of pace bowler Andy Carroll.

Carroll and the rest of the Westbury bowling attack were in fine form last weekend as Oakley’s men claimed a 77-run victory against county rivals Chippenham.

“I’d be surprised if Wiltshire were’nt looking at Andy Carroll and if they’re not, they should be,” said Oakley.

“He’s been bowling the fastest I’ve even seen him this season and he’s got to be the quickest in the league – he has batsmen falling backwards and he’s done great, especially with our main bowler, Simon Rose, out injured.

“He played for Wiltshire through the age groups and he’s got to be the quickest bowler in this area.”

Westbury opted to bat first after winning the toss and opener Jared McDonald led the way with a knock of 67.

Lydon Gibbons and Richard Mills both weighed in with 26 while Carroll (25) and Clark Evans (20) put runs on the board.

But the visitors’ Craig Fry and Arran Merryweather both took three wickets apiece as Westbury were skittled for 217 in the penultimate over.

Captain Oakley starred for the home side with the ball, taking four wickets for just 13 runs as Chippenham were put under pressure.

Billy Cookson top-scored with 39 for the visitors whileTrvor Lloyd was closest behind with a knock of 20.

Evans ended with figures of 3-15 while James Cotterill took 2-10 as Chippenham were bowled out for just 140 with just over five overs to spare.

Oakley added: “It was a really good team performance from us because there were contributions from everyone.

“We bowled and fielded really well and kept going, even when Chippenham seemed to come back into the game a little bit.”

Westbury will go looking to make it two wins from two when they travel to Dumbleton tomorrow.
