Saints lost their penultimate game of pre-season on penalties after playing out a goalless draw with Celta Vigo.

Both sides hit the bar during a match of very few chances and the game went straight to spot kicks at the end of 90 minutes.

Saints managed to score just one of their three efforts through Steven Davis while Celta Vigo converted all four of theirs to lift the Torofeo Memorial Quinocoho trophy at the Balaidos.

Interestingly given there is just one pre-season game now remaining Mauricio Pochettino made nine changes at half time, though he did at least get a first 45 minutes each for Maya Yoshida and Gaston Ramirez.

Saints had the better of the first half.

Jay Rodriguez probably should have given them the lead when he broke clear on 22 minutes but uncharacteristically fired wide while Rickie Lambert had a goal ruled out for offside.

Celta Vigo threatened rarely but almost broke the deadlock on eight minutes as Andreu Fontas drilled a long range effort against the bar.

The second half was something of a stalemate until the final stages as both sides struggled to create any genuine chances.

Guly do Prado twice threatened in the final ten minutes, firstly jinking onto his right foot inside the area but shooting across goal and wide before getting to a James Ward-Prowse corner and glancing a header against the crossbar.

With the game goalless at full time it went straight to penalties.

Celta Vigo score all four of theirs while Guly do Prado blazed over the bar and Ward-Prowse saw his saved as Saints lost the shootout 4-1. Only Steven Davis was able to successfully convert from the spot for his side.
