A CONSULTATION is underway to determine the best site for a new bus stop in Amesbury.

Wilts and Dorset bus company has found a buyer for the town’s bus station and plans to vacate the site later this year.

Wiltshire Council has been tasked with finding a suitable location for a new bus lay-by but it has proved quite a challenge.

Initial plans to build the northbound bus stop on the main A345 near Fairways Court sparked anger from people living there who said it would be too close to their homes.

They feared lack of privacy, the effect on their property prices and anti-social behaviour and litter.

Other locations that have also been considered have raised questions over traffic congestion, road safety and the loss of green space in the town.

One alternative is the site of a taxi rank on Salisbury Street although a consultation is underway to gauge the opinions of the town’s taxi drivers as well as shopkeepers and residents.

“This has proved quite difficult for us,” said Wiltshire and town councillor, John Noeken.

“Clearly people have been concerned about where the buses will stop once the bus station is shut.

“Some of the ideas have upset people.

“That is why the town council is launching this consultation so that everyone can have their say.

“We need somewhere in the town centre where buses can pull in. It is likely to be quite busy at certain times of the day. “We are keeping an open mind and will be reporting back to Wiltshire Council what we find.”

Residents in Amesbury have received leaflets about the consultation which runs until August 23.

Responses should be sent to the town council at the Bowman Centre.
