Rickie Lambert could go to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil says England manager Roy Hodgson

Daily Echo: Rickie Lambert Rickie Lambert

Roy Hodgson would have no qualms about selecting Rickie Lambert in his World Cup squad should the Saints striker impress over the coming season.

Lambert had quite a day yesterday.

The 31-year-old became a father for the third time when his wife Amy gave birth to his first daughter Bella Rose and just 10 hours later he was informed that he had been included in the England squad to face Scotland at Wembley next Wednesday.

Just two years ago Lambert was plying his trade in the third tier of English football following spells at Macclesfield, Stockport and Blackpool, where he was released in 2000 having made just three substitute appearances.

But Lambert impressed sufficiently for Saints last term - when he scored 15 times in his maiden Premier League season - to earn his first international call-up.

And even though he is in the latter stages of his career, Hodgson sees no reason why the burly striker could not be part of his World Cup plans if he continues to shine - and if England qualify, of course. "It would be better if he was 24 and not 32, but on the other hand our intention is to do well first on Wednesday and then in these autumn games where we are trying to qualify for Brazil," the England manager said.

"If Rickie Lambert can help us do that and maybe when we get there, do well in the tournament, then I will quite happily turn a blind eye to the fact that he is 32 at that time because it's not age that plays football, it's human beings.

"You get very fit and healthy 33-year-olds and you get 24-year-olds who are not in the best of shape."

With Andy Carroll and Daniel Sturridge absent, Hodgson's attacking options have been reduced for the first friendly against England's 'auld enemy' since 1999.

Those options will be further reduced if Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe have to pull out over the weekend as a result of their respective shoulder and hamstring injuries. Although Lambert's inclusion is a good news story, it also highlights the dearth of young English forwards available to Hodgson.

"We can't get away from the paucity of competition at forward level," Hodgson added. "During the last 15 or 16 months we've had injuries which has meant we haven't had an awful lot of choice. "But it would be harsh if you then turn that against Lambert.

"He's a very good technician, good in the air, his understanding of the game is good and he's scored goals.

"It would have been nice if he had come through at 24 maybe people did not take a chance on him because he is not exceptionally fast.

"But what more criteria do you want when you are selecting a forward?"

And I think what Woy was trying to say is 'If you're good enough, you're young enough'

He's definitely got one amazing world cup in him. 32 is by no means too old for a forward who was never defined by his pace.

I am really pleased for Ricky and the club but in all honesty I still think it is highly unlikely that Ricky will go to the World cup in Brazil. It is so hot out there and European teams do notoriously bad in South American World cups. For that reason fitness and pace will play a massive part. If however, because of the heat Roy wants a player to hold the ball up exceptionally well then he might well get a part. I'd take him just for the inevitable penalty shoot outs!!

To be fair, I kind of agree with you for the first time.
Crouch always did well for England, but got left out in favour of 'favourites' such as Defoe, Wellbeck etc who have never been convincing on the big stage.
But that's the problem with England. Players aren't picked on form, or potential to do well, mainly just picked from the same pool of players in a handful of clubs.
Seriously, if Wellbeck/Cleverley/S
malling weren't at Utd as an example, but at say, WestBrom, or Saints, or Swansea etc, how many times would they have been called up??

That's a very good point about penalty shoot outs and reminds me of one Matt Le Tissier who would have been extremely useful in that respect, in addition to his magnifient talent in all other creative aspects, but it still wasn't enough!

And when Hodgson says '..I'll turn a blind eye to his age..' what he really means is 'he'll turn a blind eye to the fact he plays for Southampton FC'.

Well done Rickie and please God let's hope you do more than enough to stake a claim for a longer term selection!!

Delighted for Rickie. Wembley fixture and playing Scotland for the first time in a while will make it a special one to be involved with. Plus I think it will suit his game perfectly for a debut.

The passion he's got for putting on the shirt might make him stand out ahead of some of his team mates too, just hope he plays his own game and he'll be just fine. Always felt Le Tiss over thought it and felt reigned in at international level.

I agree with most of what you say but would like to add a little point about the climate in Brazil for the world cup. It will be held in their winter time and the southern hosting cities of Porto Alegre and Curitiba will have temperatures that can drop to freezing. Whereas the most northern hosting cities will be in the tropical zone. It’s a country the size of a continent.
The draw will be intriguing and more important than ever as teams moving from the cold south to the warmer temperatures of the north will surely be at a disadvantage.

Great news for Rickie. Loved his interview when he talked about the fans singing his name and saying "that why I love them."

Can't help thinking there is still mileage in the Banega deal. Valencia are in deep financial trouble. They seem to owe around 350m with a half finished new stadium and needing 150m to finish it, Their majority shareholder is now the nationalised bank Bankia after the club defaulted on loan repayments and the guarantor (the Valencia local government as far as I can tell - they apparently guaranteed 85m) lost a court case earlier this year meaning that control of the club passed to Bankia. There were suggestions of the bank being asked to delay interest payments of millions of euros and that if this didn't happen the club would need to sell a number of its star players this summer. Questions were raised in the Spanish Parliament about Valencia CF getting state aid (because the majority shareholder is a bank that became owned by the government after the financial crisis). I think it is still possible that Banega might become a Saint. I Hope so.

I’ve just been to the annual visit to my clairvoyant.
She said I still have a successful career in poker and drag racing ahead of me and my footy team will be seeing the colour silver, which was nice to hear.
Worryingly, she said I was channelling thoughts of replying to the numpty TEBOURBA on the Echo forum. I said no feckin chance.
Apparently this deed for those participating will be rewarded with a random selection of Piles, Syphilis, Vietnamese Rose, a Skunt season ticket and matching smelly scarf.

I hope there is a good crowd tomorrow to support the team and give SRL a good send off.
I live in Brighton and for their two home friendlies they had crowds of 10,000
and 12,000.
Norwich had 14,000 when they drew 1-1 with Real.
Looks like our great away support will continue this season with a good crowd
at WBA.

In light of Rickie's new England status I have added a life-size inflatable replica of Rickie Lambert to the forthcoming Xmas gift range at MerryConfucious.com. If you press his nose he sings "Is this the way to Amarillo" in an indecipherable Liverpool accent.

Also in the range this year, I will be offering a "Ah not so bad after all" ceramic toilet pan. This has a PFC badge printed exactly in the spot where 87% of all skid marks normally occur. It means you can now feel rather pleased rather than annoyed when leaving a skid mark - and have an excellent excuse to offer the wife for not cleaning the pan immediately after use. A bonus of course is that you can literally p!ss on PFC at regular intervals.

I Hope so.
Blimey. Sounds like they haven't got much choice! I can only think of one team that got itself into deeper financial poo than that.

Hodgson will pick Wellbeck whether he impresses or not over the coming season - that's part of the problem with England. You don't have to play well, just be in the MancU squad, or A.N. Other from the so-called "big" clubs.

No, he might not be a long term solution but then neither is Stephen Gerrard. We need to be getting a team together that can do as well as it possibly can in the next world cup and then after that we rebuild. If that means picking some players who are the wrong side of 30 then so be it. It hasn't done the Italians much harm over the years.

If you listen to the interview, I think you'll find that Lambert also doesn't think he's the long-term solution. But, like you, I reckon that, with the dearth of decent English strikers at the moment, he'd be a good stopgap measure.

Ah, welcome then! Not sure if I can say 'lucky' you, but good to have a fellow Saint up here! There are one or two others I've seen randomly too!
Good news is that in 9years here, never seen a Skate.

A great player spotted and signed by Alan Pardew and developed by Nigel Adkins---- both of whom were unfairly sacked by the axe man.
Be afraid Poch -- be very afraid -- you won't have to finish rock bottom as you did with your last team to be chopped by Mr Cortese.
On the Saints Spanish form I give Poch until Christmas at best!
pathetic
childish
bitter
inferiority complex shining right through
I hear that Solent Interiors want to be P*****ey's shirt sponsors. They are only 10 quid short of a deal.

Perhaps our favourite skunt comedian should cough up the rest.
If Solent Interiors did sponsor them, chances are they'd make a bodge job of it.
Probably put the sponsors logo on the wrong side of the shirt , or some other incompetent piece of work..

I've seen one in Slough.

not surprising.

If the UK were to ever get an enema they would insert it in Skateville or Slough.

John Betjeman was right.

Fourth rate is all that is required for the bargain basement fourth tier of English football. That's why you also have a fourth rate manager for a fourth rate team.

no I beg to differ

the borer is just a bile filled little cockroach who keeps on trotting out the same cr*p in the hope that one day he will be proved right.

at least the other trolls on here try to come up with original arguments once in a while.
