Saints secure Sociedad win

Daily Echo: Saints secure Sociedad win Saints secure Sociedad win

Saints rounded off their pre-season campaign with a 4-3 win over Real Sociedad.

Jason Puncheon’s goal seven minutes from time gave Mauricio Pochettino’s men a morale boosting victory over the Spanish side in a game in which they had led three times but been pegged back.

The match also threw up plenty of questions for the Saints boss to answer just a week before the Premier League kick-off at West Brom and a major injury worry over Luke Shaw.

The teenage left back had to be helped from the field just before half time with what looked a worrying knee injury that surely rules him out of England under-21 duty in midweek – the fourth time that will have happened - and makes him a major doubt for the season opener.

Also a big doubt for that game will be Nathaniel Clyne, whose injury meant he was again unable to figure.

Saints got off to a great start as they took the lead after just seven minutes.

Rickie Lambert, fresh from his England call-up, produced a superb ball to Adam Lallana who was calmness personified to control and finish.

Saints poured the pressure on Sociedad with some superb interplay between the attacking players and with some of their Spanish counterparts looking a little disinterested.

Jay Rodriguez forced the keeper into two smart saves, Shaw’s surging run almost brought rewards while Jos Hooiveld’s effort from a corner was hacked off the line.

Despite all that Sociedad equalised against the run of play on 29 minutes.

Some awful Saints defending, missing several attempts to clear inside their own box, led to Gorka Elustondo being allowed to finish for 1-1.

It didn’t stay that way for long though as central midfield pair Victor Wanyama and Morgan Schneidlerin linked up with the former playing in the latter who finished.

Related links

Once again the lead didn’t last long, five minutes on this occasion, as a simple diagonal ball cross field ball landing in the path of Carlos Vela.

He took one touch to control and another to fire low into the far corner.

Another Saints goal was quick to arrive however as Jos Hooiveld headed home Lallana’s corner.

Lambert found himself in the book after shoving Alberto de la Bella, who was also cautioned for his part in an unseemly flare up in the corner, before the injury to Shaw meant an entertaining half finished on a worrying note.

The second half never competed as spectacle with both sides continually making changes.

Sociedad levelled things up on 59 minutes as Vela played in Haris Seferovic who forced home via the inside of the near post.

Just when it seemed the game was destined to finished level Puncheon came up with the winner.

There was certainly a hint of fortune about it as Lloyd Isgrove totally mishit a shot which ended up turning into an assist for Puncheon.

There was also a hint of offside about it too, but Puncheon was determined not to miss out on any luck coming his way and duly finished off from close range to secure the win.

Saints: Boruc (K Davis 46), Chambers (Cork 62), Lovren (Yoshida 62), Hooiveld (Fonte 46), Shaw (Fox 45), Wanyama (Ward-Prowse 62), Schneiderlin (Isgrove 75), Lallana (Punchon75), Do Prado (S Davis 46), Rodriguez (Mayuka 75), Lambert (Ramirez 46).

Real Sociedad: Bravo, Sangalli, Ansotegi, Cadamuro (Martinez 46), De la Bella, X Prieto (Zurutuza 67), Elustondo, Ros (Pardo 67), Vela, Seferovic, Chory (Griezmann 62)

Sat in the Admiral, the missus is munching on a fudge cake and I'm enjoying a pint of Itchen Valley Pure Gold :)

Crowd was around 10k, and we made some noise, especially for Punch :) Jay Rod had a good game, despite not hitting the target with anything other than a pea roller, Adam played well and took his goal superbly. Wanyama looked only half awake - the missus said he's probably been out on the lash last night. Overall a good performance and a well deserved victory.

A good performance , although only a friendly The thing is with friendlies is that if we lose we all say its only a friendly it means nothing, if we win its a good performance. As with most of our friendlies , win , lose or draw it rarely has any bearing on the season ahead . I was still hoping for another signing before start of the season, unlikely now I would imagine ( but you never can tell with saints lol).COYR hope all players on international duty return unscathed and fully fit. GOOD LUCK RICKY . LET THE SEASON COMMENCE FOR THE ONLY TEAM IN HAMPSHIRE

Hopefully MP losing so many players for the internationals doesn't hinder the preparation for wba to much .

Wasn't a bad run out this afternoon. Thought the new centre back Lovren was class. Wanyama is a big unit and strong. Thought Chambers did ok apart from one of their goals. Shame about Shaw who looked pedestrian for most of the game and could have done better for their second goal. Gutted about Luke's injury. I heard after the game that they think its a medial ligament injury and he could be out for weeks!!!! Another game that shows Lalana is too small and weak for this level, and Ramirez a total waste of space and money these two are potentially keeping Cork and Davis out the side which is a game. Liked Isgrove. Thought JWP added energy to the side when he came on it was his tenacity and quick movement that led to the fourth goal. Schnedelin was class as was Yashida.

Questions now - Fox obviously has to play left back? Does Cork play right back for Clyne or does Chambers start?

He won't though - doesnt stand a chance with the number of midfielders the best thing for him is to go out on loan.

I think it's a sign of the times to be honest. We've shelled out plenty for the season ticket. It costs me a min of £50 to go to a game with travel, parking etc. And though I'd like to go I can't justify that for a friendly. I'm sure there are
many more in a similar position.

First half good, Wanyama strong, Spider classy. Jay looked a threat running with the ball. Chambers did quite well. Defence, looked shaky like start of last year. All their goals and our last two scrappy. Davis looks too shaky, terrible way to concede at near post, and distribution awful.Boric fills me with much more confidence. Fox looked out of his depth again, and made on shocking sliding effort to get the ball that cut their right back in two.
The Spaniards were feisty for a friendly, and left the foot in loads of time, and lots of squaring up.
Surprised Cork only got a run at right back.
Yoshida and Lovren have to be first choices- Fonte and Hoover not up to the right standard.
Gaston looked rusty...
Isgrove did well in limited time, as did JWP. Puncheon played with purpose too.
Mayuka not enough time to do much.
Rickie made some great passes in the opening half hour. We look so much better with him up top, and Jay running from out wide.
Lallana had some nice touches, but a bit slow.

Those that didn't go missed an enjoyable little cameo, I got the chance to see the new kids on the block and it certainly posed a few questions, we seem to have a surfeit of skillfull midfielders, comfortable with the central defence, it is obvious we need full back cover of quality quickly, and a goalscoring forward is a must in my opinion. Guly and Wanyama were the stars of the first half, JRod should have had a hat trick from his opportunities, Spider was imperious, the multi subbing was a bit disruptive but gave everyone a chance to shine, Punch looks up for it and Mayuka was unlucky not to score, Callum Chambers was solid but got done for pace by Vela, no disgrace, not many would have caught him in the circumstances anyway. Yes a worthwhile afternnons entertainment. Downsides were Rickies petulant behaviour and Luke Shaws injury.

Artur Boruc looked good as expected, Kelvin was a bit rubbish and showed why he isn't 1st choice, luke didn't play as well as he has done and fox was only marginally worse apart from that slide tackle which was appalling. fonte and hooiveld looked suspect at times, Yoshi was ok and Lovren was beast. callum showed promise but looked as inexperienced as he is and cork was only a bit better. Schneiderlin was amazing and his goal represented his performance well. Wanyama showed flashes of how he kept barcelona quiet with his strength and JWP looked ok. Didn't see much of isgrove and lallana looked threatening at times. puncheon did what he does in cutting inside and that worked quite well as usual, guly was quiet but wasn't bad per se, stevie d was a good little machine and kept the side running well, j-rod was the most threatening of our players and looked best when running with the ball, mayuka was quiet as well but he stayed onside! and lambert looked confident with him shooting less than he set others up, ramirez gave the ball away a bit too much and didn't look dangerous at all.

The lambert scuffle scared me. It was a pre season friendly and he is normally very placid so i don't know what real sociedad did to make him kick off like that.

Good performance first half and later on in the second. Wanyama looked good, Rodriguez impresses more and more and Spiderman first rate as usual. Lallana better than at any time last season. Chambers impressive at first but flagged a bit after failing to deal with the cross field pass that led to the Vela goal. He (and Cork) will do for cover for Clyne but we need left back cover - but who will we get with Shaw nailed on that position for years to come? I don’t think Danny Fox will do – bad positioning, gets dragged inside – and we haven’t tried Taggart out pre-season. Lovren is obviously a good buy.

I was a happy clapper for Ramirez but he was poor today and I am not so confident as I was that he will come good this season – time will tell.

Big question. If we get that top class new striker that we all seem to want, who will we drop?

a very enjoyable game and it was great to see so many young kids, the future of the club, there.
the 2 new signings looked impressive enough for a friendly, DL looked very solid and a good addition to the defence while VW looks very strong and a powerhouse in the middle.
my only gripe with the team is that we don't seem to want to shoot from outside the box, yes there were a couple of efforts from distance but not from the edge of the area. we are taking too many touches and are trying to walk the ball into the net.
concerned about luke`s injury but at least we are still in the window so if it is a long one we can bring in cover.
always nice to beat top quality opponents even if it is just a friendly.

Boruc still my no.1, Chambers good but not quite ready, Dejan looked good and I suspect will start with Jos next week, Luke didn't have his best half but he's only 18! Victor is an absolute beast and many premier league midfielders will feel his force this season, Morgan, two words, WORLD CLASS!
Adam looked dangerous and full of running, Rickie played with real freedom and looked like a guy who's had a good week. J Rod is at his best with Rickie around and showed his usual pace a willingness to take people on. Guly makes so many good runs its ridiculous! He never stops running and is always available for a pass. I was worried about Fox but actually looking back on the game he looked just as good as Luke in the half he was on.
Corky looked comfortable at RB, Davis and JWP made positive impacts as did Punch. Biggest dissapointment was Gaston, looked unfit and not very interested, I hope he comes good this year but I don't think it's gonna happen.
Enjoyed the game today (my first in a couple of seasons) and I'm looking forward to the new season. Coyr

Worried about your comments re Ramirez. Was he maybe unfit or lacking pre season or was it attitude and commitment?

At least we only conceded three, it's great to see how much work they have done on the defense over the summer., should be a good season in the bottom three.

To be fair, looks like their left back tried to nut Rickie.
also Adam seemed to be involved in 2 or 3 shoves/grapples of the ball in the 2nd half. The Spaniards weren't exactly playing in the ' friendly ' spirit.
lots of feet left in on tackles too..

Rickie's probably a bit grumpy cos he aint getting much sleep.

Certainly not match fit yet (he hasn't had much of a pre-season, of course) but he was pretty anonymous - didn't contribute. Hard to tell if there was a lack of commitment.
