Rickie Lambert named in England squad for World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine

Daily Echo: Lambert in England squad Lambert in England squad

SAINTS star Rickie Lambert is set to continue his fledgling international career after being called into the England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Lambert, 31, has been named in the squad that will face Moldova and Ukraine early next month.

It comes after his scoring debut earlier this month, when he came off the bench to score the winner against Scotland in a friendly at Wembley.

The Moldovans visit Wembley on September 6, while England travel to Kiev on September 10.

There are also been call-ups for Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse who have both been named in the England under-21 squad for games against Moldova and Finland.

Shaw is hoping for a first cap at that level after four successive injury related pull-outs while it is the first time Ward-Prowse has been called up for the squad.

Calum Chambers has been included in the England under-19s squad for their friendly in Estonia next Thursday.

England squad:

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Celtic), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Forwards: Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Rickie Lambert (Southampton), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Ashley Young (Manchester United).

Well done SRL.

With the start Daniel Sturridge has made to the season, I expect he will have to come off the bench (and rescue England) again ;0).

To be fair, that goal he scored on Saturday was mint and I can't see Rooney not starting so I fear you're probably right.

Still, you'd think over two games Rickie will see some action.

The man is a complete Saints (and hopefully England) legend, but I do fear that the hip action in those Latin dances may be asking a little too much.

Then again his doubters have always been proved wrong so far, so perhaps he can prove me wrong on this as well....

Congratulations Rickie. Smash a couple in at Norwich on Saturday just to keep the momentum going and the pressure on Roy to give you the game time you deserve on the International stage.
