Poch staying at Saints

Daily Echo: Mauricio Pochettino Mauricio Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed he is continuing as Saints manager.

Pochettino met Katharina Liebherr for five minutes before facing the press at St Mary’s this afternoon and told the new non-executive chairman that he intended to remain in his role.

The manager reported that he was told he has her full support.

Though Pochettino was sketchy on any details after such a short face-to-face meeting, and didn’t confirm how long he would remain as Saints boss, at times stating the situation could be reassessed in the summer, he said he felt he had a responsibility to continue.

He also praised Nicola Cortese, who resigned yesterday as the club’s executive chairman, and insisted he had spoken with him about his decision.

He said: "I spoke to her five mintues before this press conference and she transmitted to me her full trust and the people working for this football club."

He added: "Eight months ago when we were speaking about this we were finishing my first season and I said if he left there would be no sense in me staying. This situation is completely different. We are in the middle of this project.

"Nicola knows my decision to stay. I have spoken to him about it. It shows I am committed."

Has anyone noticed the coincidence that its been near on exactly 5 years since NC's appointment as per the '5 year plan' agreement with Markus?
So so glad that MoPo is staying with us, sad to see NC go but there's no room for emotions in the course of success, I look at it this way we have lost a great leader, and in his place gained a billionaress, could be worse...lol
NC will be hot property in the football world and will be head-dunted by the billionaire owners of clubs all over the world, his path is paved with gold and I wish him all the best.
It feels that in a strange way this has brought the club, fans, players even closer and more determined to keep up the job of making SFC a world class football club, I wanna be at Sunderland to get behind my club, the atmosphere will be something, the stadium of light will be lit more then ever before...We love Mopo we do...we love you mopo we do...we love you mopo...we do...oh pochetino we love you...COYS!!!!

I agree, johnlennonar. Be careful, Datarater, I have a feeling that NC may be back before too long. I think he loves the club and is still keen to continue The Project. It wouldn't surprise me if Katharina knows that NC is going to try to put together a consortium to buy the club and with her blessing (nudge, nudge; wink, wink) providing the price is right. Both NC and Katharina are hard-nosed business people.

To MoPo I say: 'You're a BIg Man who will have gained even more respect from Saints fans with your decision to stay. You can become a Saints legend.' The playing squad will hopefully be settled by this decision and will also stick together.

To Saints fans, I say: 'Raise the roof at the next game at St Mary's. Chant MoPo's name. Those wonderfully committed fans going to Sunderland at the weekend, be even noisier than usual (if that's possible).'

Excellent news, however, clearly not a lot could have been discussed in a 5 minute meeting and I am confident MoPo will have required some assurances as to the future plans, particularly in respect of a) players leaving whom MoPo would wish to remain at the Club & b) budgets for potential transfers into the Club. One must therefore assume that such matters have been aired with KL & her advisers in the last 24 hours. I hope this is the case for if not then MoPo's tenure will, I fear, only last until the end of the season or until NC comes a calling from his new club which , according to some conspiracy theorists, could be Southampton FC. Also is MoPo party as to whom could be new CEO? Interesting days ahead.

Can't see NC going anywhere where he doesn't have total control. Not many owners would allow that. I certainly can see a scenario where he comes back with new backers and carries on where he left off . And it wouldn't surprise meat all if this is already in motion.

Agree 'rednwhite72' I have posted the same point on a couple of stories today. Katharina said that they would honor Marcus 5 year commitment and she has but that is coming to an end. It has been successful and we are grateful but NC's vision was to take us to another level which will require an much larger investment than Katharina & her advisers may not be prepared to make. I always said NC would be off when the investment dries up but we also know he was not an easy character to work with.
However we must now appeal to Katharina to ensure all the good work is not undone. The best way to re-establish stability is to back the manager, state that no star players will be sold and allow MP to buy at least one more.

Just being a bit of a pedant here, but MP said he spoke with her "5 minutes before this press conference", not "I spoke with her for five minutes before this press conference" - meaning the talks could have been quite protracted and ending 5 mins before the press conference started. :-)

His English is fine & that is how he communicates to the players. He just chooses to use an interpreter for media work to maintain his air of an international man of mystery.

Poyet has figured that the team will be making an extra effort in support of the manager, he also thinks that morale could be disrupted, and isn't sure which way the game will go.
I think we'll beat them by a LOT of goals.

Umm, not really. All we know is the Poch and the players are staying for now. There's be no more guarantee than that. Of course it's great news, but I was never concerned that the club would completely implode and we'd end up sliding back down the leagues or anything. My concern has always been about "the project". The manager and players are all there because they, just as we fans did, bought into Cortese's vision for Southampton. He sold us all the dream of playing Champion's League football and to eventually be competing for the title. Is that still the ambition for Saints? We don't know that yet. We do understand that Kat Liebherr wants to sell, so presumably for her there is no such ambition. Will the new owners have Cortese's vision or will they accept more modest goals? Will the new CEO Kat installs in the meantime maintain what Cortese has built or come in and start changing things? There are still many unanswered questions. If you believe all is perfect, you are as naive and easily swayed as those people you are mocking in your post. You are just swayed in another emotional direction.

When the club was purchased by Marcus he paid around 14 Million for it. We are now worth in the region of 100 Million. If Kat does indeed plan to sell the club she is going to want to get top dollar. If we start to sell our jewels that is in reality asset striping which will effect the price of the company. Judging by the photo of Kat which was not that flattering she already has a Toblerone addiction and will want as much for the club as possible.

Now NC is a ruthless business man and rather intelligent, it would be very naïve of us to believe that he did not see this coming. He has had months to plan this which is why I believe Poch as committed his near future to us.

It could be worse, we could smell of fish and play in blue or Fat Sam could be our manager!!

The timing of Cortese's departure, is one of the things that puzzle me.
That KL doesn't have a replacement CEO, ready to step straight in, to deal with the day to day running of the club, indicates that NC's departure (at this time) wasn't expected.

Was it a spat over him wanting to spend more money?
Has she told him that the club is under offer from a new owner? (Note the translator, at one time, said "new owner", instead of "owner" or "new chairman" - Was it a Freudian slip, based on something he'd heard, that was quickly corrected by MP or a simple mistake?)
Maybe NC left owing to KL having told him to sell a player, or two, after all, he has always said that the club needed to be self sustaining.
Could be that he chose to go now, to create a situation where there would be nobody on site to negotiate any transfers, safeguarding the squad until, at least, the summer?

All pure speculation, on my part, with no shred of evidence to support it.

I am wary of MP's comment, that no player he doesn't want to leave, will leave the club.

This could be MP drawing a line in the sand.
Should KL or the new CEO now push through the sale of a player MP wants to keep, he could use it as a reason to leave.

Just my thoughts.
