Saints club captain Kelvin Davis has said that only players who are prepared to buy into the squad’s team ethic and spirit are welcome at St Mary’s.

In light of Dani Osvaldo’s suspension this week, Davis was asked whether the players could welcome back a teammate after a breakdown in relations.

Osvaldo was handed a two-week suspension by Saints, after allegedly headbutting his teammate, Jose Fonte, in training.

It is understood the players were deeply unhappy at the Italian international’s actions, and there are certainly questions over whether he can ever successfully reintegrate himself with the squad.

Davis said: “We’re a friendly bunch. We’ve said for a long time we’ve always had a good team spirit and a good changing room, and that can’t change.

“If anyone doesn’t want to be involved in that then they’re not welcome.”

Speaking after the 2-0 win over Yeovil in the FA Cup fourth round today, Davis also said: “Obviously, what’s happened has happened.

“As a team, as a squad, as a club, we’re looking forward, and we’re very much together.

“We showed it again today, and it’s something we just want to move on (from), get behind us and concentrate on what happens out there (on the pitch).

“Our dressing room is as solid as it has ever been, and it will continue to be so.”

A fairly diplomatic way of saying a particular person is not buying into the team ethic and didn't answer the question of whether he would be welcome back.

The players will not be judging Dani solely on this incident. If he has fully integrated with the team, is socialising with them and is the life and soul of the party he will be better placed to get away with it than otherwise. Likewise I'm sure if he goes round to apologise personally to Jose and then rings each and every squad member to express his remorse then surely they are far more likely to give him another chance? A public apology would also help his case greatly. something along the lines of 'I've been a fool, I've apologised to Jose who has graciously accepted it as well as my other teammates and the manager, and I can assure everyone that this will never happen again'.

You cannot put a price on the team spirit we have. And if you could it would definitely be more than we paid for Dani. It's way more important than any one player.

Kelvin being the diplomat, leaving the door open for Oz, however, if he is not prepared to be assimilated into the Club ethic, he should be let go. If he wants to be part of it, IMO he has to apologise, and promise to be on his best behaviour in the future, we can use his talent, but if he is only going to be a liability, he is of no worth to us at all.

Reports are saying we've already found a replacement. Some Brazilian dude from Sampdoria, apparently. I hope this is true as it would be a great lesson for the rest of the squad (and academy) to learn.

It seems to me that it is a ploy by him for Saints to put him on the transfer list, if this is the case then they should make him come into the training ground each day until the end of the season, he will get fit but he will lose his national place, in the summer he can do what he likes. rant over.

If he really wants away then we should tell his agent to get our money back and he can go. He's been linked with Inter and another since his arrival so shouldn't be a problem for the Italian internationals agent.

We'd rather have someone running the club properly than worry about which scarf she is wearing thanks. Anyway she was wearing her lucky red white underwear. Nice result by Brizzle today. The gap is closing every week.

I wonder if the Daily Mirror will have cottoned on to the fact the players elected to give the ball to Guly to take the penalty, I am fairly sure that JRod was probably the designated penalty taker today, it was a team gesture, plus the fact they were prepared to trust him to score.

it must be all the lifts to training and.....oh wait a min ;0)

he has been popular for a while with the players though, didn't gaston say he was the most skilful player we had when he came? the players also looked peed off with the booing that guly got when he came off the bench once.
guly has taken a lot of stick from some with comments like `we`ve got the only Brazilian who cant play`. strange that this and others weren`t being said and he wasn't being booed when he was scoring goals that helped us out of L1 and the champ. almost as if the people who give the abuse were not around back then!

A bit more brain dead than usual tonight, had a splitting headache when I got up this morning, no way was that going to stop me going, a couple of pain killers kept me going until half time, when I nodded off for a few minutes and survived the game, the win helped and a I was up for a fish and chip supper, but still suffering a bit, nothing a good nights sleep won't sort out. Some good pics on the Saints OS, I am visible in Picture 8, it looks blurred and that's how I felt!

Only those above us worry me. Spuds, Newcastle and Manure gone before but none this round unless Chelsea lose tomorrow which I doubt. Got to avoid the five and particularly the top three and hope they draw each other this time. Another relatively easier home draw and hopefully the injured will be back and we will be firing on all cylinders again.

I'm all for a bit of banter and a good ruination every once in a while but seriously:

arguing about fan attendance? really?

we have more fans than they do
we have a bigger stadium

it's an utterly pointless argument
it's like this:
Deluded Skate: My argument is based upon this number
Awesome Saints fan: Well MY argument is based on THIS number which is bigger!
repeat ad nauseam

the skates only use this because it matters in their tiny little minds and they truly truly don't have anything else to say. The end result is a thread full of unreadable tripe that has nothing to do with the actual story.

We noticed an incident late at the end of yesterdays game, in a scramble in their penalty area .
This involved JWP, who took the ball from a defender, was imediately bowled over, the ref looked, lifted the whistle to his lips,he saw JWP recover, allowed play to continue.
I assumed he played on to see if Saints would score.
BOgger me, the ball went out------- he gave a goal kick!

In my mind 2 things come out of this,
(1) Referees are incredibly inconsistent.
(2) JWP has to be congratulated on his honesty, most players would have gone down like they had been poll-axed.
I love our team ethic of win by "fair play," if we never achieve any honours by using this, so be it.

Is it me? Is this in English? All the mistakes make this virtually impossible to understand.

Can someone explain what this means? Spelling errors, syntax errors and God knows what a Ford Cortina has got to with all this.

I suggest reading what you have written BEFORE you post it so that we can make a relevant comment.

I know awful wasn't it. why do they always show longer highlights of the games that were on tv earlier that day? they had 14 games to show, 12 from yesterday and 2 from Friday. why cant they extend the programmes in the earlier rounds by half an hour to get more highlights from every game. I did see Oviedo`s leg break though, looked a bad one. still we had more highlights than the fishy few. BBC didn't even bother with the football league show last night.

Is it me? Is this in English? All the mistakes make this virtually impossible to understand.

Can someone explain what this means? Spelling errors, syntax errors and God knows what a Ford Cortina has got to with all this.

I suggest reading what you have written BEFORE you post it so that we can make a relevant comment.
this was actually good English from bw&r, makes a change. to sum it up for you, what it means is he, in fact all poopey fans, are insanely jealous of our great team and the way its run. that's about it really. the Cortina reference was due to the fact that he/she/it finally after 4 years realised that Cortina and Cortese both start with the same CORT. I don't know what the point of that is. I don't even think he/she/it does.
I love bw&r`s comments on here because it makes me realise how well educated my 7yr old daughter is.

Great to see we did the job required on Yeovil, well done boys. I would love Brighton in the next round, home or away that would be fun. Sadly there was no TV coverage of the game here in Aussie but what I can say though is I’m happy for Guly and Big Sam Gallagher.
Out of interest, did anyone rate their goalie Marek Stech, does he have potential? He was tagged the next Czech Petr Cech when he was at West Ham.

Happy Australia Day everyone.

Most of us are still waiting for the ITV highlights! I blinked and missed them first time.
It was better when the BBC had them.

Do we really care what this desperate fool has to say regarding past attendance. Like all of our jealous pet skunts he is completely unable to come up with any argument which is remotely relevant. What matters to proper football fans is that they support their team and hopefully get to watch some good quality football in the process. We get to watch some of the best and highest paid players in the world every week. He gets to watch has beens, journeymen , and cr@p players every week and if that's not bad enough it's also in one of the worst and most embarrassing grounds in the football league. Feel free to keep humiliating him though. It's just a bit of a shame he's too thick to realise it.

There are 88 odd comments on this thread. Should be a good opportunity for Saints posters to comment on the article and we have enough fans to debate between ourselves. Actually, about half of them seem to be responses (direct and indirect) to Pompey posts which mostly have nothing to do with the article. We should concentrate on our club and our posters rather than getting bogged down in what they have to say. C'mon boys, we are much better than this. We are the Saints!

that's ok and a good idea, but where then are all the hundreds of people who came on here to give their `wonderful` `insightful` and thoroughly researched` opinions regarding the `Osvaldo incident`, as I think it should now be called? where are the opinions about the match and its implications? look at any story/thread about a game, not the in game ones, and you will see the same people posting their opinions about the game, then look at a story like the Osvaldo incident and you will see loads of `new` people posting about it and moaning about the `regular` `clique` of posters who disagree with them. why don't the `new` posters ever talk about the games? makes you think, no?

I can't really comment on the new posters and their whereabouts. I've been on the DE site for years and don't post much but I do read every day. I don't know if I fall into a new or old category which may have helped me to answer some of your question(s). Being part of the site (albeit in a small way) is a good way for me to hear Saints fans opinions on the articles as I do not live in the UK anymore. I love all the 'Saints' stuff banded around from new or old Saints fans whenever they decide to post. I was only commenting on the reactions to the Pompey posts.

I wonder if the Daily Mirror will have cottoned on to the fact the players elected to give the ball to Guly to take the penalty, I am fairly sure that JRod was probably the designated penalty taker today, it was a team gesture, plus the fact they were prepared to trust him to score.
Or back him even if he didn't. A very big gesture by the team I though. If it had been 3-0 up one would have said "give it to Guly". Not sure what the fans would have said if it was put to the vote at 0-0! It shows the boys on the park know best!
